It must have been brutal getting out of the parking lot last night.

Just checking in on a little of the telecast and the box score…that looks like a good one to have skipped. With this upcoming travel I won’t be around much through the series in Detroit.

I’m heading up to Reno for an 11:05 a.m. first pitch today vs. Round Rock, the start time presumably to accommodate screeching schoolkid groups. Then a 6 a.m. flight out tomorrow. Guess who’s scheduled to start on the mound today for the Reno Aces.

Incidentally, I’m not even sure it is really service time manipulation.

IIRC, the 10 or 11 days he had already spent in the minors were enough to prevent him from becoming a free agent before 2029. He would have to stay down for another full year (which I don’t think is likely) to delay that further.

Being down for about another month could prevent him from becoming a Super 2 in 2025, but that’s a smaller cost savings.

And (as Ed implied below) any of it only matters if he ends up being good enough to be an everyday regular. I think there’s a decent chance he will, but it’s by no means a sure thing.

From what I saw I prefer he spend a couple more months in Vegas. I didn’t think this one was about service time, just thought it was amusing that the hot dog vendor is complaining. We don’t root for injuries but Elvis seems above average likelihood to give Allen a shot that way when the time is right.

Currently in Revision Brewing in Sparks. “Reno As Fuck” is a cool name for an Imperial IPA but at 23 IBU I think I’ll choose something else.

That’s absurdly low for an Imperial IPA!

This place is pretty much all IPAs. They have 13 IPAs on their board. DIPA is 8% ABV/75 IBU and Dr. Lupulin 3x Triple says 11.3%/133 IBU (that’s a No in the other direction) among the choices

            • Soaker May 3,2022 5:08 pm || Up

As one of their non-IPAs they also have this, which sounds like a real retchfest. I meant to ask for a taste when I was over there just for fun, but dammit I got so hung up on the IPAs that I forgot.

I celebrated my arrival in Gaetz/DeSantis country with a Florida Man this evening (yes, another IPA, 8.5%, 55 IBU).

The world needs heroes, and in our home state of Florida only a very special hero will do. A hero with a shark tooth around his neck, a Grim Reaper tattoo on his arm, and a rap sheet longer than his mama’s mustache. A hero who’s forgotten more about amateur taxidermy and alligator rasslin’ than you’ll ever know. What better way to pay tribute to our beloved Florida Man than with a big ol’ Double India Pale Ale brewed with a nearly criminal amount of hops and a moderate bitterness that just about matches Florida Man’s general disposition. This hopped-up whopper of a beer is big in character and guaranteed to sear itself into your memory, just like “the world’s worst superhero,” Florida Man.

See and the worst part is there is no way Fisher will pay for the extension. So, instead of just being smart and giving a veteran coming off an injury a bunch of days off we will just sit him for 3 weeks when he is 3 PA’s away in the most obvious plan ever-and probably get a grievance filed against the team.

This is not going to be an easy fix. The AJAX comments plugin is, if I recall correctly, one I had to tweak to work with some of the other stuff going on (and the reason that we can post comments without reloading the page). But, it using something deprecated in newer WordPress is going to be the reason that doesn’t work.

Here is the close call sports, a pro umpire you tube that I love. She explains at the end there was a weird fair call that had to be litigated yesterday when the bumgarner HPU was at first and had a line drive hit right at him. he did the mechanic for fair, but was spun around by the line drive and pointed foul. everyone stopped as if it were foul (even though the foul mechanic is both hands up not pointing). Fast forward to today where bumgarner was bumgarner.

Agree with these. Picard S2 has had a few good moments but also has some real big holes. When there is something missing so big that I can remember “hey-what about SPOILER?” more than once it is a problem. But in particular I did like a couple of the different TVH callbacks.

Disco has become a tire fire which is unfortunate. Havent watched much of LD or any of Prodigy yet.

Disco really started strong, but they’re just going bigger than their writers can handle. And the end-season drama was stupid.

The writing got *very* bad this last season. It also doesn’t help that nearly all of the most interesting characters and great actors have gradually left the show. Sonequa Martin-Green is wonderful, but she doesn’t have Jason Isaacs and Michelle Yeoh etc to play off any more. It’s just kind of boring now.

It was pretty much exactly what I was hoping it would be. Looks like it will be a ton of fun, and honestly I would watch a half hour of just characters walking around that gorgeous bridge set.

Nice to see that Spock recovered from his mopey beard phase to become super buff shirtless Vulcan sexy guy. Also, lol at the Kirk fake out.

and Pike had a brief “let me borrow Spock’s bread but my mopey will just be pure sexy” period. And yeah I realized right away about the fake out, but it’s a test for your Original Series knowledge to not be caught off guard by it.

Well it isnt like it was a Tribble or something. A guy who we never hear and dies in the beginning of a S1 episode is a small detail.

I knew it because 1) my buddies and I would joke about Shatner and the mustache and 2) parts of that original episode were shot about 5 minutes away from my old office in El Segundo. I actually drove by there and walked around 1 day just to take a look because Im that sort of dork.

When it was late in the morning and we just had court reviews on, me and my collegues would try to say as few words as possible. You would get mocked and possibly beaten if you said more than three words.

Maybe that’s what the batters were doing.

You would think that the players themselves would be the last to fall for the “young team” canard.

I think most players actually think that hard work and team mojo can overcome talent deficits. Leaving aside the jaded David Justice in Moneyball type (I saw that scene again the other night), I think guys like Pinder and Pache and Seth buy in to the idea that a team can pull together and prove the experts wrong. At least until July.

Someone posted something about the average age earlier, but I had to look at the roster to remind myself how truly not young this team is.
Pache (23) is the only truly young player (plus N.Allen whenever he comes back). Then Smith (25) and Jefferies (26), neither of whom seems likely to amount to much.

But I guess the argument would be this isnt supposed to be the young team yet. (Despite the random DK Tweets). This is keeping around whatever floats to the top of the pond while we gather the youth in the minors and start bringing them up the next 3-24 months.

I dont like it but that would be what it is I guess.

I think someone said it might be Zach Logue, acquired in the Chapman trade. He was up briefly as a reliever, but has been starting at LV.
Parker Dunshee and Brian Howard were both guys who put up impressive stats in the lower minors but were said not to have great stuff. Neither is on the 40-man roster.
      Tapia is a reliever.

The Mets scored 7 in the ninth last night to beat the Phillies 8-7. Marte led off the inning with a single and then (making the bat around official) doubled in the winner. Canha had a two-out RBI single and a run scored in the inning.

A few comments from Matt Gaetz country, where I tried to go to the beach today but got chased off by 9:30 a.m. by thunder and lightning and a tornado watch (weather is supposed to be perfect for the remainder of my time here though):

    1. If you enjoy seeing Let’s Go Brandon bumper stickers, this is your place. They’re usually not on bumpers but rather on the rear windows of gigantic pickup trucks. Also somebody out near the beach had gigantic three-story tall signs draped off their upper balcony, LET’S GO BRANDON and TRUMP WON. The local television stations are in Mobile, AL; I was enjoying some of the commercials for Alabama’s upcoming primary in the bar last night.

    2. I know of Waffle House. I didn’t know they could be more prevalent than McDonald’s. There are about five of them on the stretch of boulevard my hotel is on. The trailer-like design of the prefab buildings is so hilariously appropriate. There are plenty of other breakfast places so I don’t need to stoop to that level.

    3. Oh my the beaches here are beautiful. Wide with sugary sand and not dwarfed by endless condo towers as they tend to be in South Florida. No more well blowouts, please, BP. The overdevelopment of South Florida, particularly on the Atlantic side, is a real turnoff; this area (I’m staying in Miramar Beach which is adjacent to Destin) is much more my speed.

Waffle House is so ubiqitous I took as credible the rumor the Braves’ City Connect jerseys this year would spell out ATLANTA in Waffle House-style black font letters on yellow blocks. I alas cannot find the cool mockup I saw on the internet some months ago. I did find lots of tee shirt versions, sold on etsy stores which mostly feature Lets Go Brandon attire.
