Original here: (apologies to The Boss)
Bold Dan Straily was a fine young guy,
Thought he’d give hardball a try,
Has more strikeouts than any flinger,
He’s got lightnin’ in his fingers.
So get out the way, of bold Dan Straily,
It’s past time to be Triple A-ly.
Minors ‘r over, major leagues is waitin’,
Bold Dan Straily — gonna be a great’un.
Bold Dan Straily’s come to town,
Foolin’ them hitters, and settin’ ‘em down,
First with the heater, then with the curve,
Givin’ opponents all they deserve.
Young Dan Straily clumb an Oregon tree,
Baseball diamonds for to see.
Looked to the south, to see where he’d play,
Decided he’d be an Oakland A.
Young Dan Straily wanted knowledge,
Went on east, to Marshall U for college.
Paid his own way, made them Buffalos proud,
Ath-el-etics took him in the 24th round.
Bold Dan Straily roomed with AJ Griffin,
They set about to get batters whiffin’.
For last year’s totals, ol’ AJ won,
So Bold Dan Straily reloaded his gun.
Now get out the way, of Bold Dan Straily,
Too late, batters, to say you’re ail-ly.
Doubtin’s over, debut’s in store,
Dan Straily’s pitchin’ blew down the door.
So get out the way, of bold Dan Straily,
It’s past time to be Triple A-ly.
Minors ‘r over, major leagues is waitin’,
Bold Dan Straily — gonna be a great’un.
Nice. Clumb?
But who am I to question The Boss’ choice of the past pluperfect subfunktive tense?
And by The Boss I mean Coco Crisp.
Bravo!
What a song!

Whoa!
i don’t get it.
It’s a trade.
i got THAT part.
lol.
This. Although I know NOTHING about Freitas other than what I just looked at now on B-Ref.
I’m assuming it hearlds a return for Norris, but hell maybe Inge becomes the C2 and we are about to start a Welcome Back Kottaras marathon..
Up your nose with a rubber hose.
Dear Mr. Kottaras,
Please excuse Dan from giving up hits tonight. He is superhuman and will be saving the world and simply doesnt have time for “baserunners”.
Signed,
Straily’s mother

hattebergscatchers.it does feel like that right now.
Need Scoscia to manage
Melvin’s a catcher
But also a Bob
Huh. My first inclination is that more is to come, just because it saves the team about $2 million this year and we’re already well under last year’s salaries.
How much of Kurt’s salary are the A’s paying?
That’s the question. He’s due about $2 million for the rest of the year, so if they are paying half of that, it really doesn’t amount to much of a trade at all. So I’m kinda left scratching my head.
It does free 6 million for next year, so maybe the A’s are gonna be more active in the free agent market?
Less popouts!!!!
Whoa.
What.
….Is this a joke?
Apparently not even really a catcher?
And the BA #27 Nationals prospect!
Sickels gave him his “sleeper alert†tag for 2012
And lo in May.
23-year-old in single A. Serious meh.
Just presenting the google-scrapings. No analysis yet.
The first thread was about how he was about to be AA but wouldn’t be catching.
Huh, Sickels called his defense “underrated.” Either way, to Midland with him, posthaste!
At least this means we still have someone with a Hawaii connection on the roster.
!!!
???
Wait, seriously? What is a David Freitas?
NotSuzuki.
understand now?
Interesting. I’m intrigued by this NotSuzuki strategy.
Gio and Kurt, together again.
At least Fosse has all weekend to recover from the shock of this news.
At least Grant is still Stupid.
This was pretty matter-of-fact. Not like his ridiculous commentary for the Cespedes acquisition.
Slusser is apparently so devastated by the news that she’s turned the Drumbeat over to John Shea (actually I think Shea usually does this on Fri-Sat).
Note: “The A’s are including cash in the deal to pay for part of Suzuki’s contract.”
GET ALL THE CATCHERS
(But I wouldn’t mind having Rrrrramon back!)
GIMME. I WANT.
I love Ramon as much as anyone, but I don’t want him to actually play games for the A’s any more
What.
(hides under table)
He… sucks now. Though I still kind of want him.
I like to think we’d revive his career and he’d be rrrrrrrrrrrreborn, career-wise.
I BELIEVE.
Damon is now available, too. And Giambi should be coming off the DL. Too bad Tejada’s not available.
I can’t always tell what is Slusser’s own speculation and what is Beane/Forst whispering in her ear, but it seems pretty pointless to trade Suzuki for not much, kick in money for his salary, and then trade for one of these other veterans who hasn’t been any better this year.
I suspect most of what she says is speculation.
Well, depending on how much cash is in the deal, the move could be to free up money next year.
Or even this year (Rollins), though I have my doubts.
Yeah probably not
I really don’t understand this trade.
Off the hook for most of next year’s salary plus the 2014 buyout, got a C (in both senses) prospect back, Norris is as good or better than Suzuki right now.
I hope we put the extra money to good use then, like maybe signing Fuentes for $8 million.
We could extend Balfour for 10 more years
Emil Brown?
cliff lee
speaking of, people on HBT are calling RAJ an idiot for the contract itself. As I recall, lee had higher offers from NYY and an equivilant from TX. Am I remembering that wrong?
He took less to go to Philly.
Thanks, and go As.
They didn’t free up much 2014 money or any 2015 money, so I’d assume Rollins is still a no-go financially without the Phillies chipping in a lot of dough. I wouldn’t be upset if it happened, though.
Does anyone know if Rollins’s 10-5 rights still apply if it’s a waiver claim?
I speculated in an earlier thread that they do, because the CBA allows 10-5 players to block any “assignment” of their contract. That could be an incorrect reading.
NTC seem to survive a waiver claim, supporting this
That’s because they’re all the same as each other.
Here’s all of what I put up from that Straily/Hultzen/18-inning game in Tacoma:
http://lastoftheninth.com/coppermine/thumbnails.php?album=250
So, since it hasn’t been 10 days since Norris was down, who’s backing up? Or starting?
Smith to the DL would allow an early recall? Maybe?
TWSlusserSays
Correct.
They still need to do a move for Straily, right? It would not shock me if they tried to go a night with Inge as the backup. They shouldn’t, but that way they can keep whoever they were going to move down (Miller, Scribner, Moss..).
Miller goes to Sac for Straily supposedly
that was the scuttlebutt yesterday
I heard the Suzuki news in the car on KNBR, with the host reporting it and then concern trolling about how this is what makes it hard to root for the A’s (even while slipping in how terrible Zooks has been).
I then flipped to THE GAME to find Urban and the other clown talking about football for another 10-15 minutes before finally saying “We have to acknowledge a trade that just happened,” like they were annoyed at having to break format to discuss it.
similar thing happened when the game had to announce the kataras trade. this just in, the A’s acquired someone toward the end of the trading deadline because they’re suddenly and surprisingly in contention at the moment, but first, we’re on the line with with a retired football player and we have an off-season time-sensitive question for him… “how important is the quarterback to the success of a team?”
Very nice of Brandon
He’s genuinely bummed – the two of them seemed like pretty good pals.
I am sad this means the end of the hella adorable Brandon/Kurt commercial.
Classy
Nothing special is a huge upgrade in a couple of positions for us.
Aha! Goldstein hates him so he must be undervalued!
My initial thought was that Kurt had been on the roster longer than anyone else….but that’s only true of position players. The somewhat hypothetical Joey Devine is the true veteran of the staff, having made his debut on 8/20/2005, although he’s played, what, all of two weeks since then? Suzuki debuted 6/12/2007; Dallas Braden debuted 4/24/2007.
2007? That’s like 10/5 in A’s years.
i HAVE TO CHECK THE BABY BOOK, BUT, THAT MAY HAVE BEEN tHEO’S FIRST GAME, THE bRADEN ONE.
EXCITING
Caps lock
braden predates zooki? wow. memory plays tricks.
Devine was a Brave then. We traded for him in January 2008.
Oh, that makes sense. I forget that other teams have rookies too.
But his A’s debut wasn’t till 4/10/08, and he’s pitched 68.2 innings since then.
That’s ALMOST 14 innings a year. A regular Old Hoss this one is…
Quick FKwiz: Only remaining A from 2007 on the 25-man roster right now. (Braden is on DL, Barton in minors)
Spoiler:
mark ellis.
Spoiler:
It’s true. The A’s never traded him and he will be playing second base tonight.
oh. and here i was going through the A’s 25-man roster.
Spoiler:

Spoiler:
Wow.
LOL
It is hilarious that this is one of the “new” statistics that sportscasters have picked up in the last few years.
oh Casey. Stick to pie
Also, just wait until you see what catching Dan Straily does for Norris’ CERA!
In other news, the A’s have fourth best ERA in MLB this season
That’s probably like 83% Suzuki’s influence.
He made it worse. The team was at 3.44 and he was 3.56.
In other minor league “news”
‘graphers unite!
Another MVP ’05 talent
His numbers in AAA are actually really damn good – 49 K, 7 BB, 1 HR in 44 IP.
Didn’t he used to be really good for a while before injuries set in?
He was awesome and he had a really cool blog back then
And it seems that he feels he is all the way back
Pat Neshek? That’s the death metal dude, right?
The A’s are all over the August mostly-irrelevant trade news!
They can’t compete with the 10 player Astros – Jays deal though
Actually very happy about this. His AAA numbers are sorta incredibly great.
His MLB numbers last year were incredibly terrible. Is there an injury explanation?
yup, see above
Nothing special but he’s cool.
So it’s a gift?
A gift and a curse.
I like this. He’s better than Jim Miller and possibly better than Balfour.
But he’s replacing Scribner
If the mystery answer is chaw, I think we all owe Josh Hamilton a punch in the face.
So… this means Suzuki cleared waivers? Huh.
Thanks, and go As.
our trade bait was trade abatement.
Huh.
Thanks, and go As.
He wasn’t that bad this year…
I bet the Giants would have blocked this one if they weren’t half a game ahead of the Dodgers. Surely Blanton is better than Zito.
I’m halfway sure the Dodgers will claim anyone and everyone right now
Allow me:
Love that movie. Love that scene. Love that line. Love Gary Oldman. And I’m kinda lovin’ you for posting it.
Awww. Sweet.
I love that movie. I need to get it on DVD… I only have it on VHS.
I think I have like 3 versions of it. Including the international cut that makes a lot of the comments the actors made about it and their characters actually make sense. Funny what cutting like 2 or 3 scenes/shots will do.
Except Suzuki
In addition to the photos linked higher up, you can finally read alllllll about that 18-inning game I was at:
http://www.jamesvenes.com/?p=222
Stray Olympics thoughts:
1. Andy Murray vs. Roger Federer is going to be awesome.
2. When one of the Russians was biffing on the balance beam last night, in the background you could hear that someone was doing a floor exercise to “Shine on You Crazy Diamond.” How could they not show that?
3. Andrea Kremer has to stop interviewing swimmers before they are able to catch their breath. It’s very unsettling.
That Federer match was fking LONG this morning.
2. Streaming online, I’m sure.
And I don’t know why the women perform to music on the floor. It doesn’t match up and just seems dumb to me. The guys don’t do it.
What I don’t get is how you can concentrate on not falling off the damn balance beam when out of nowhere there’s an eruption of applause in the middle of your routine. Those girls are robots.
Question and answer in a single comment. Efficient.
Women? I don’t see any women on the gymnastics team.
Seriously there is something wrong with gymnastics when you peak at 13.
This piece by Dominique Moceanu made me sad. I hate those Karolyis.
Woah I remember that name.
Thanks, and go As.
Who can forget this image:
Crap. Resize somebody?
1) Murray winning gold in London would be bigger than any Wimbledon win, I say.
2) I heard that as well.
1) No way in hell.
Tennis fans vs. a whole country’s fans? Wimbledon being every year vs. the Olympics once every four and in London right now?
I say, at the moment, gold would be bigger.
I read ptbnl’s comment as meaning that Murray has no shot at beating Federer.
Could be! Not clear to me, though.
he’s got a shot. especially after federer went 18 rounds today.
how many sets is the final?
I think it’s still best of 3, which can make it easier to sneak away with a win compared to 5 sets.
3 would favor the tired one. is that who you mean sneaking with the win?
I meant more in the sense of someone like Murray winning, where a match that goes 5 sets usually favors the better player in the end because it gives him more of a chance to recover from a bad set.
If Federer comes out flat after his marathon with Del Potro, which was about 4.5 hours for a 3-set match, let’s say Murray takes the first one. Then Federer has no room to really dig his way back into it. He has to take the next two. Same goes the other way, of course.
But, take a 5-set match and you can lose the first and even afford to lose the second at some point without being done.
(“the second” meaning more a second set instead of losing the first two)
true, a shorter match is more of a crap shoot with less room for error. but the chances for recovery from bad sets in a long match might be hampered for federer if he’s still aching sunday before first serve.
and i think i found that it’s 5 sets for the men’s singles final.
Really? Seems odd they’d play 3 sets max up to the final and change at that point.
Just checked 2008 and sure enough, Nadal won in three sets and they were all his.
No, it was Olympics vs Wimbledon – see also Olympics vs Tour de France.
Well, like I said, my point is around the chance Murray wins the gold in London. It wouldn’t mean nearly as much if this was Beijing or Rio.
And it being against Federer, who just beat him in the Wimbledon final. And Federer is clearly up for it, so it would be a serious accomplishment.
I’m not saying that it wouldn’t be a huge accomplishment, just that after 85 years of FAIL winning Wimbledon would be waaaaaay bigger.
That amount of time is the only thing that’d still tilt it toward Wimbledon itself, yeah.
Quite the rollercoaster ride for young Mr. Norris (who, BTW, we should just start calling “Brawny” and be done with it).
He’s a lumberjack and that’s OK.
Thanks, and go As.
Brawndon
Nice!
I am aware of all
internetfk traditions.The pitch mutilator.
Fully concur. And wear plaid.
In the no shit sherlock catagory:
This just means less options for player shirts for my children
Plain white tee-shirts plus green and gold tie-dying. Represent the team colors and have good family fun along the way. Of course, you lose all future edgy punk credibility with the kids in later years, but that was probably going to happen anyway.
Tie dye can be punk if you never wash it and just let it get crusty.
or stay punk and do home silk-screening.
I am listening…
kits, full DIY, or FSU (the other FSU… f*ck sh*t up).
Smith to DL then?
Thanks, and go As.
taylor? that is two moves…
wait two with Neshek. Suzuki for taylor, right?
and Neshek.
Miller sent down for Straily
Scribner for Neshek maybe?
Norris for Smith on DL
Taylor for Suzuki’s spot?
Thanks, and go As.
What happened to Theth? I saw that Carter came into the game for him last night.
Pulled up running out a ground ball. Left hamstring, I think SuSlu said.
yep, hammy.
Hammy.
+ Norris, Straily, Neshek, Taylor
– Suzuki, Miller(?), ?, Smith(?)
And the Straily=Miller move
Norris=Theth
Neshek=Zooks
Taylor=Moss? (please please please)
39+Kottaras =40-Suzuki=39+Straily=40+Neshek=41.
no?
FDLS for Kottaras
no, the A’s kept him on the roster. Its the new market inefficiency
That still doesn’t add up when you add Straily. Scribner down too?
Yes Scribner down too
Interesting. Taylor’s actually been hitting very well lately.
And they didn’t spend a week with Smith day-to-day unavailable first.
gonna be hard to do from the bench
Taylor the latte boy…
No Cowgill? D:
I’m down with Brandon Taylor.
straily not on 40, no?
I think they were at 39, Suzuki trade makes it 38.
I figured there wasn’t a mistake
er, 39 again with Neshek
So is everything all settled then, or do more moves need to be made to balance the roster?
Today was shitty.
I hope I can watch this game tonight, and I don’t mean on Yahoo.NM. It’s not the free game on MLB.tvboo. Yay!
Got the final words from work: no, I can’t work as a nursey.
which ass should we kick?
My boss. I am not a fan so far. So said I never mentioned wanting to work as a nurse. Really? Because I can remember three conversations.
Well, best of luck to Suzuki. If the A’s are sending money along with him I guess they really wanted to move him.
nothing says “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out” like a a bucket of money headed with you
Especially when it’s the A’s sending the money.
Like getting a handout from a hobo.
That pretty much sums it up.
LOL! I read that as “handjob”.
The simile still works, I guess.
that’s just callous.
Hee
OTOH the team with the second-best record in baseball wants him as their starter for the rest of the year.
HI BED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ♥
Hi, how are you doing?
good. it’s great to “see” you again here! :D
It’s nice to be back. When I kept talking about VORP to my wife this summer she thought maybe I had a stroke or something so I’m glad to be here in the land of kraut that costs little to nothing.
missed you! ♥ can’t wait to hear all about the little one.
We think you had a stroke for different reasons.
With the Suzuki trade the A’s now have only 3 players with guaranteed contracts for 2013: Cespedes (8.5), Coco (7), and Anderson (5.5) for a total of 21M. And there are only a couple of players due for arbitration, several of whom have either been injured or in the minors all year (Braden, Devine, Barton, Blevins, Kotarras, Pennington, Rosales, Smith). If they let their FAs and the less useful arb players walk they could pretty easily go sub-Marlins next year with the majority of the roster earning the minimum.
If Wolff/Fisher have been told that SJ is a no-go and have decided to sell the team then it’s really in perfect shape for that (from a roster standpoint, anyway).
Whoa, interesting.
so we could feasibly use the FK playoff tickets slush fund to just… buy the team next year?
Can I have $5
NO! it’s going to the o.FK coliseum fund.
Put me down for a grand. All I ask is that I get to pick the cheerleaders….(is told baseball doesn’t have cheerleaders)…okay I’m out.
that’s it folks, part-owner bed has decided… the A’s are moving to korea and/or mexico.
Korea town?
Cool, I used to live in Koreatown.
But the cheerleaders you’re auditioning don’t have to know that.
I like how you think.
Clearly they’re going all in on Josh Hamilton this offseason.
that guy thought the Marijuana smell at pac bell was bad…
I’m sure he’s an expert.
So, here are the people currently scheduled to appear at the autograph session during the Streak reunion weekend:
Pretty lame, Millhouse. They can’t even get David Justice to commit? Tejada? Eric FKing Byrnes?
Justice asked for free cans of soda.
1. Someone should bring some Nation’s for Macha.
2. I wonder if the Fear Mecir sign will make an appearance.
3. Maybe if everyone starts harassing Mulder on Twitter he’ll show up too.
yesh shonny… way waaaay back, before the deadball era, before the modern era even, it was possible for an ENTIRE team to go on without a single brandon on its roster. nobody knows how or why.
Autograph session? What autograph session?
MY HATTY BASEBALL CARD MUST GET SIGNED.
Friday, August 17 against Cleveland. Looks like you have to buy a ticket for the game and a ticket for the autographs.
goddammit.
Wait, we can have a pregame mingle with Scott and the others and a guaranteed bobblehead for $125?
Do streakers get in free? Or can they just hang out?
I think they will, regardless.
Who the FK is Thad Bosley?
Hitting coach? Or some other coach. I don’t remember which one.
Mr. Cunningham
Hee hee.
Does the Coliseum have a separate entrance for VIP parking, anyone?
No. If you’re coming from 66th, you go in the main entrance, and then the VIP area is off to the right.
If you’re coming north on 880 (e.g from Hayward) there is a separate entrance to VIP parking. It’s the entrance on the right just as you come off the off-ramp for 66th.
Whoa, I had no idea. So you’re saying the VIPs from the South Bay get a perk over the loyal East Bay fans.
(It’s also accessible from Hegenberger.)
Sounds like the same as the diamond level entrance, just a different turn in the lot
I don’t think there’s a completely separate entrance.
I think all the cars enter together, then the VIPs get directed to their VIP lot, which is a right then a left if entering from 66th. But you probably knew that part.
Fancy pants
LOL
Cool: Both of the Upton brothers hit their 100th career homers today.
Yeah, but who hit theirs first?
