“I think one of your great-grandparents or something had to be born there,” Kottaras said. “Both of my parents were born there. They were just trying to find people who could play. We had an OK team. It was a good experience for us.”
I was going to say “are there even hella people there?” and thought better of it. However many people are at the Coliseum, they are hella people, by definition.
This morning I wrote what I thought was a perfectly good summary of the interesting points of last night’s game. My newscaster looked through the script and said “Uh….who were the A’s playing?” Oh. Right. Tampa Bay, but who cares, it was the 12th walk-off win this season. Then he looked at it again and said “And what was the final score?” Okay, maybe I should have put that in there too. But that’s what you get for three hours of sleep.
I was referring to the team totals, not individuals. Believe it or not, I thought you’d been grossly overstating that claim, but it turns out you were spot on. Seattle is just barely better, but is.
He’s a poor salesman if that performance was any indication.
Groused about the stadium issue in the first minute, completely brushed off the mayor, didn’t even thank the fans…
I wish he was someone’s crotchety uncle and not the owner of a franchise w/ the 3rd most WS victories in the game.
What do you mean? He said he was thankful of the fans that showed up and that it was his/their responsibility to bring the fans in. Granted he blamed the venue for that, but that’s still on him.
Yeah, he had some decent “thanks to the 9000 who were here” kinds of lines. But brian’s right, most of his words and all of his attitude were not those of someone much inclined to promote his team.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
The inning with Wolff in the booth made me basically want to kill myself. The awkward silences had me reaching for the potassium cyanide tablets. Maybe Forst will talk me off the ledge.
Never suck on a Blow Pop with the microphone open.
On the plus side, Fosse asking him all kinds of awkward questions about both the stadium situation and Quan may ensure that we have someone better in the booth next year.
Quite easy for Forst to convince the two bumbling idiots in the booth that the waiver wire is an actual possibility for the A’s to still do something substantial.
I don’t get why he even bothered to do that. All it does is raise expectations. Half of our anger is the result of Beane saying that he’d have to be a fool not to take advantage of this opportunity.
That’s what’s making me so mad about it, honestly. That rap the other day about how he “owes it to the players” to improve the team to give them the best chance to “carry this as far as they can.”
I should know that you never, ever should listen to what the powerful say. Most of what they say, you should believe the opposite.
Never suck on a Blow Pop with the microphone open.
He should just give everyone the deals of all his dealings so people can bitch about the specifics of his successes and failures. It worked great with moneyball.
Really no reason to plunk him. He started calling for time the instant before the pitcher started to throw. He can’t tell when the guy’s going to start his delivery.
Pennington and Suzuki will outlast us all. 50 years from now, when the Guadalajara Athletics finally open their new stadium, you can bet they’ll still be in the starting lineup.
Last night at this time Poppy didn’t know who Kotteras was. It’s 24 hours later, so I figure she’s sitting in 215 and starting to assemble the pieces of the sniper rifle she brought wrapped in her A’s fleece blanker.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
The upside of the pie guy: it appeared that his outfit might have been constructed with duct tape and garbage bags, making it slightly more complicated for him to show up in it again.
Mostly a jinx thing. I’m not really a fan of the “let’s dress up like blah or blah” thing, but unless it’s over the top weird, I usually wouldn’t say anything about it or care that much. (I don’t necessarily care much for the cutesy team tagging too, like the squirrel thing with the Cards last year, either). Even this I don’t necessarily care other than the dude was creeeepy.
We should have worked in a plug(!), but there was not much time and I wasn’t convinced that The DogMa would really go through with it until late in the afternoon. The Jumbrotron is an odd experience — there’s a big delay before your voice shows up on the speakers, by which time Kara is on to something else.

i can’t tell if you’re being serious, or if this is a continuation of the disappointment you were wearing in the parking lot after the game last night.
*i’m* AV. alex vause. put this loon in psych before she hurts someone.
Ok so here is the deal as it was told to me by an A’s employee…..Season ticket holders are seated first when you buy the playoff strip, which is all possible home games throughout the playoffs, Division series, ALCS, and World Series. They are going to be sending out invoices to all current season ticket holders within the next 7-10 days. The prices are determined by MLB not the A’s, MLB blocks out certain sections and they tell the A’s what to charge for the remaining tickets.
The locations that will be available and the prices will be:
Plaza Level Infield: $801 per seat
Lower Box: $675 per seat
Field Level: $601 per seat
It is my understanding that season ticket holders who purchase the entire strip will be getting a significant discount off of the individual game price per ticket.
Caveat emptor if you buy tickets at a markup on StubHub for a game that might not be played. You will only get face value back.
Checking my CC records from 2006 it looks like the refunds I got for Games 4 and 5 of the ALDS and Games 6 and 7 of the ALCS included the $5 “per-ticket fee” but not the “order processing fee”. I wasn’t buying those as a season-ticket holder, just single-game tickets through the A’s website.
Those relative price levels don’t look right…Plaza IF costs more than Field Level and Lower Box?
The max possible # of games would be 12, I believe, so that’s $50 per ticket for the lowest price tier you show. I’m guessing the single game ticket buyer is going to do better than that, at least in the WildCard and Divisional Rounds (where as we all know MLB screws Oakland into the least desirable time slots and makes their decisions 48 hours before game time).
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Yes, MLB told the A’s that they consider the Plaza Level Infield seats to be better than Field level or lower box, since Plaza infield are around home plate and the other tickets are in the outfield, and yep they are the correct prices, I guarantee you..
I agree with this, personally. Plaza Level Infield is a great view of the game, whereas even lower box feels very distant and has obstructed views of the corners. I’ve never understood the pricing disparity.
For both baseball and basketball nothing gets you into the game like being right at field or court level. But I think that works best as a special treat; if you’re going to a lot of games you probably want the better view provided with some elevation.
In 2006 anything in the field level was still considered better than anything in the second deck. Single-game pricing in 2006:
Division Series (on sale to general public on Monday, September 25):
$55 (MVP), $50 (Field Level), $45 (Plaza Level Infield) $40 (Plaza Level); $30 (Plaza Outfield) and $20 (Bleachers and Plaza Reserved)
ALCS (on sale Monday, October 2):
$80 for MVP, $75 for Field Level, $65 for Plaza Infield, $60 for Plaza Level, $50 for Plaza Outfield and $35 for Plaza Reserved and Bleacher seats
If that does include the World Series, season ticket holders definitely do get a big discount. My recollection from 2006 is that ALDS and ALCS prices were doable but then they went through the roof for the World Series; even the seats in the untarped third deck were too rich for me.
This was back when Wolffish were preaching hard the concept that seat scarcity would result in fans doing a lot more advance ticket buying. Presuming the team actually believed that, from their perspective the reduced capacity could have been used as an incentive to get fans to buy 2007 season tickets, for example.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
But the sfgate article mentioned that the upper deck tickets would be going to 100,000+ fans who had already registered and attempted to buy tickets. So the advance ticket buying base was clearly there; were A’s management actually thinking that selling those people tickets and having an extra 10,000+ per game watch the A’s try to win a world series was inversely correlated with season ticket sales the next year?
No, the A’s spent August and September advertising that “the only way to guarantee yourself postseason tickets is to pay a deposit on 2007 season tickets”. The lottery entered by the 100,000+ was for the right to buy whatever was left over after the A’s season ticket holders and MLB and its patrons (the other teams, advertisers, etc.) bought what they wanted. Presumably the 100,000+ were in competition for maybe a couple thousand seats per game. Notice it’s not until October 10 that they say, “Oh yeah, there will be those 11,000 seats in the third deck too…at $150 per seat per game.”
Huh, that makes a little more sense. Although I still find it strange that apparently they weren’t going to open those 11,000 seats until MLB stepped in, even with that possibility of a devious last minute markup.
My favorite part is the wording of the press release:
OAKLAND, Calif. — At the request of the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, Allan H. “Bud” Selig, A’s Managing Partner Lew Wolff and A’s President Michael Crowley, agreed to make seating available in the third deck for any potential World Series games played at McAfee Coliseum.
They took pains to make sure everyone knew that they didn’t want more fans in the ballpark.
Thanks for the info! Have you heard any talk of whether they will offer some sort of playoff priority to folks who pony up early for 2013 season tickets?
Yes, I also have the information…wow I am like an A’s ticketing employee..LOL..The A’s began taking deposits for 2013 season tickets on Tuesday and if you put down a deposit for 2013 Season Tickets then you will have the option of purchasing a Playoff strip and those people will be seated right after current season ticket holders!
So for those of us who have season tickets in the bleachers or Value Deck, we have to buy the strip in a different area to be assured of World Series tickets? That kind of sucks. I don’t object to the higher price so much, but I want to be in 149.
so its gonna be decision time for the FK season ticket holders. I cannot buy nice things now that SLF is a woman of leisure, but I hate to think that we would waste the opportunity
It’s only an issue if we get to the World Series, based on previous experience there won’t be any trouble getting single game tickets for the first two rounds.
Where?
The Warehouse.
subtle type.
Roomy. And generic!
Did you know George Kottaras is a former Olympian?
Really? We don’t need some creepy looking dude dressing up as a pie man, but thanks anyways.
Ex-Giants fan?
Still, whatever floats your boat, new fans.
Probably.
Win the game, win the series.

More yella than hella.
True A’s catcher..
This morning I wrote what I thought was a perfectly good summary of the interesting points of last night’s game. My newscaster looked through the script and said “Uh….who were the A’s playing?” Oh. meh…details details
I would have just written, “A’S WON! A’S WON! A’S WON! A’S WON AGAIN YAY!” and gone with that.
No one is asking the A’s to repeat July. Thats right-I DEMAND IT!!
HORSESHIT.
They need to improve on it. They lost like 4 times.
Thanks, and go As.
And they took like a whole week off too. Youre right..FK that.
Lew is bad luck…
OH LEW IS ON TV LETS SEE WHAT HE LIES ABOUT TODAY AMIRITE!?!?!?!
Thanks, and go As.
His lips are moving.
Lew and Billy talk several times a day? That seems like a lot, actually.
Adrian Cardenas just broke up a no-hitter.
THANKS AGAIN BILLY
Thanks, and go As.
where does he play again?
Cubs.
Billy was so comfortable with the team that he thought no change was necessary. This is very good news.
So that talk about “were hitting. 220 (or whatever it was)”.. Was that a GOOD thing?
It’s comforting knowing that we have the worst production from SS in the American League.
Thanks, and go As.
Theres someone worse in the NL?
Apparently not.
Believe it or not, Dee Gordon has been -1.2 WAR.
Thanks, and go As.
I was referring to the team totals, not individuals. Believe it or not, I thought you’d been grossly overstating that claim, but it turns out you were spot on. Seattle is just barely better, but is.
You can see why I think it’s such bullshit that they did NOTHING to improve SS.
Thanks, and go As.
No. I’m just saying we have the worst shortstop(s) in baseball.
Are they worse than Gordon, combined?
*checks FG*
Ugh. 0.4 WAR combined from Hicks and Penny.
Thanks, and go As.
Since Lew said he doesn’t want to talk venue, it turns out they have nothing to talk about.
I can’t think of anything nice to say.
Bad play by Kottaras
BOOBIES
Also, well, nothing.
I’m forming my opinion on Kottaras based on these 3 innings.
FK that, gimmie Norris.
You forfeit your right to complain about attendance, Lew, when you deliberately depress it. Fucking lying bastard.

Oops my mistake, I must have missed that part, my GF stepped in for a couple.
Yeah, he had some decent “thanks to the 9000 who were here” kinds of lines. But brian’s right, most of his words and all of his attitude were not those of someone much inclined to promote his team.
He kind of sound old man-like, the sort of “I’m nearly dead” voice sounding.
He sure didn’t hesitate to mention how proud he is… of the Giants

The inning with Wolff in the booth made me basically want to kill myself. The awkward silences had me reaching for the potassium cyanide tablets. Maybe Forst will talk me off the ledge.
On the plus side, Fosse asking him all kinds of awkward questions about both the stadium situation and Quan may ensure that we have someone better in the booth next year.
Ray doesn’t dig this ownership, trust me. I am often shocked he still has a job with the A’s.
Me too.
Probably for different reasons than you.
Thanks, and go As.
Really? Ray’s always struck me as a pretty staunch ownership guy (“Are those new tarps? They look great!”).
Even Ray seemed uncomfortable.
Not sure if this was in another thread, but Feliz is out for the year, and probably next year too. Tommy John.
They’re having terrible luck this year health-wise.
Sudden Sam McDowell sure had terrible luck
FK you guys, you are ruining this game for me.
Pie! Boobs! Nurses! High socks!
In that order
Thanks, and go As.
Fuck you.
(backs slowly away)
I know, it’s Vince, but I still shot diet Coke through my nose when he said “the A’s have LITERALLY been on fire in July”.
Are you actually trying to imply that they have not been setting themselves on fire after each win?
No wonder they keep dumping buckets of Gatorade on each other!

But smothering the flames with PIE.
I’ve actually set a pie on fire before. It could happen.

I literally died from lack of oxygen from laughing.

Newt!
I actually expected some last minute dance after Kottaras, now I’m confused.
Really wonder if something fell through the last few days
That’s what’s making me so mad about it, honestly. That rap the other day about how he “owes it to the players” to improve the team to give them the best chance to “carry this as far as they can.”
I should know that you never, ever should listen to what the powerful say. Most of what they say, you should believe the opposite.
It’s easier to give people false hope than it is to concede mistakes and have people mad at you.
He should just give everyone the deals of all his dealings so people can bitch about the specifics of his successes and failures. It worked great with moneyball.
Yes, then you actually have grounds to form a coherent argument.
That was a pretty egregiously late timeout asked for by Cespedes (and given by the ump). Could buy Cespy a fastball to the ribs at a future moment.
Really no reason to plunk him. He started calling for time the instant before the pitcher started to throw. He can’t tell when the guy’s going to start his delivery.
Yeah, doubt the ump would have allowed it had there not been a substantial pause.
Didn’t seem like much of a pause. Shields should probably plunk the ump instead.
Somehow I get the feeling that it would be a mistake to throw at a dude that big.
Thanks, and go As.
You know it’s a tough day when Bobby Crosby is the answer to the trivia question.
FK the Rays for not trading Shields.
At least it wasn’t to Texas.
“Cliff Pennington was beaming today in the A’s clubhouse. Said he felt great!” — Korach. HELP IS ON THE WAY.
I am choosing to un hear that
Heh.

Pennington and Suzuki will outlast us all. 50 years from now, when the Guadalajara Athletics finally open their new stadium, you can bet they’ll still be in the starting lineup.
I don’t think the good people of Guadalajara would let them open a stadium in their fair city unless Pennington and Suzuki had been purged beforehand.
they actually have a good mexican league team there iirc.
Okay, that pie guy is creepy as all get out.
To be fair, that guy would look creepy no matter how he was dressed.
This is true. Very true.
there’s a little bit o’ bill irwin to him.
PIE GUY is a jinx!
Seriously, Fosse’s going to go out like Howard Beale.
Down 5-0, all because they didn’t make any moves at the deadline and the players gave up, getting no help. The season is over.
Nah, this is just because Shields is very good and Milone is something less than that.
Your fault for taking me seriously in any way.
Hate to admit it, but I miss Crisp, esp after last night.
And yeah what WC said, Shields is good, not over yet.
seems to me that whoever stays out of the bullpen longest has the advantage (five run lead muxes that up of course)
Shit, only 59 pitches?
Thats stoopid…it is clearly the fault of Kottaras the season killer.
I can think of somebody here who would think the assignment of uniform #14 to Kottaras was the beginning of the end.
[Raises hand]
Last night at this time Poppy didn’t know who Kotteras was. It’s 24 hours later, so I figure she’s sitting in 215 and starting to assemble the pieces of the sniper rifle she brought wrapped in her A’s fleece blanker.
It’s not his fault. If he asked for #14, Vuc should have said “uh, I don’t have any 4s right now. Can I interest you in #78?”
Hanley would have had that.
Well this one is pretty klunktastic.
Oh, there’s the pie dude. Doing the Bernie.
We live in strange times.
hey look, there is the shark, jumping itself
Yup.
Your life moves pretty fast, Ferris.
The upside of the pie guy: it appeared that his outfit might have been constructed with duct tape and garbage bags, making it slightly more complicated for him to show up in it again.
Instead it’ll get more creative copy cats that are less temporary :(
Speaking as Pajamaman, what’s wrong with Pieguy? (and no, we won’t be doing That again). I am generally in favor of fans having fun with stuff.
I like that the squirrel made their WS rings.
1. You know I am pro-pajama!
2. Loved you on the Jumbotron last nite!
3. Pieguy didn’t bug me. I like that people are having fun with it.
We should have worked in a plug(!), but there was not much time and I wasn’t convinced that The DogMa would really go through with it until late in the afternoon. The Jumbrotron is an odd experience — there’s a big delay before your voice shows up on the speakers, by which time Kara is on to something else.
I am not against pie guys per se, but it is a little derivative of Melk men.
Also, in the 9th on monday there was a “walk off” chant, its fun, sure, but its not the ideal way to win a game, if you as me.
It’s not the best way, but when you’re tied in the bottom of the 9th, it sort of is the only way!
yet, t
he wasthere today
God bless you evan scribner. You get your three innings
Jim Miller is also an acceptable answer.
Oy. This is not so pretty.
Man, we lost! July sucks.
Seriously, FK that month.
Thanks, and go As.
that was terrible.
I can’t believe I wasted my Pie^2 on this.
its 13 digits. it still can be used
So I got the scoop on Season Ticket Holder Playoff rights tonight…if anyone is interested..
yes!
i can’t tell if you’re being serious, or if this is a continuation of the disappointment you were wearing in the parking lot after the game last night.
I think you may have jinxed them with your purchase.
Please, when creepy pie guy showed up, not only was the shark jumped (Ed), but we were jinx as well (NG?).
Did you just blame the loss on me?
No, giving you credit for pointing it out as a jinx.
please, do tell.
Ok so here is the deal as it was told to me by an A’s employee…..Season ticket holders are seated first when you buy the playoff strip, which is all possible home games throughout the playoffs, Division series, ALCS, and World Series. Plaza Level Infield: $801 per seat
Lower Box: $675 per seat
Field Level: $601 per seat
It is my understanding that season ticket holders who purchase the entire strip will be getting a significant discount off of the individual game price per ticket.
Oh yeah and if any of the games are not played, you can get a credit towards 2013 Season tickets or a refund…
How do they determine the credit/refund amount (if needed)?
Because each ticket has its own value..

Yeah my season tickets are plaza infield in 216 and I love those seats after years if being in 129…
Yeah 216/217 are the best seats in the park.
Thanks, and go As.
117 FTW
Diamond level. On someone else’s $.
THose are FKing awesome, yeah.
Thanks, and go As.
They always look like they’d be too low for good viewing.
For both baseball and basketball nothing gets you into the game like being right at field or court level. But I think that works best as a special treat; if you’re going to a lot of games you probably want the better view provided with some elevation.
Agreed. Also, your waistline couldn’t take it.
But for watching just how filthy these pitchers are (and for things like plays at the plate and attempted steals of home)…
I agree–I think your seats look better than the diamond level with those few extra feet of elevation.
The Dimon level is not for seeing; it is for being seen.
yup, nothing says “I HAVE MADE IT” than paying $200 for a seat at Wednesday night Mid May A’s Royals game.
Ack there are missing words there and clauses that are in the wrong place.
will value deck and field club have half the value in merch? I’d take that
Yup, very much better than most of the lower bowl. Weird how the A’s have never adjusted prices to match; this has been true for decades.
Except each playoff round has different pricing, so it’ll probably be better for season ticket holders regardless.
Those prices aren’t bad with the field level, given that WS prices are insane.
Max possible is 11, since if you are in the bonus wildcard, you can’t get homefield in any other series.
So did they change the ASG slogan to “This time it counts unless you’re a wildcard unless the other WS team is a wildcard too”?
No, max this year for an AL team is 11, for an NL team 12.
Wait, isn’t max for an AL division winner 10 (3 ALDS + 4 ALCS + 3 WS), and max for an AL wildcard 9 (1 WC + 2 ALDS + 3 ALCS + 3 WS)?
Yes, I think this is (finally) right.
So the NL keeps WS home field advantage even if their team is a wildcard and the AL’s isn’t?
Just like last year
I thought it had been changed along with the 2 wildcards/1-game play-in changes.
If that does include the World Series, season ticket holders definitely do get a big discount. My recollection from 2006 is that ALDS and ALCS prices were doable but then they went through the roof for the World Series; even the seats in the untarped third deck were too rich for me.
I also remember WS prices being ridiculous in 2006, but I don’t think there was an untarped third deck.
They were going to untarp it for the World Series.
That’s not how I remember it.
CamoCotroneo is right. Over Wolffish’s objections, MLB said that IF the A’s made the series that the upper deck would be untarped and seats sold.
Conceded
Yep, $150/seat to sit in Sec. 330 Row 13.
It’s really unbelievable that MLB actually had to ask A’s management to open the third deck.
This was back when Wolffish were preaching hard the concept that seat scarcity would result in fans doing a lot more advance ticket buying. Presuming the team actually believed that, from their perspective the reduced capacity could have been used as an incentive to get fans to buy 2007 season tickets, for example.
But the sfgate article mentioned that the upper deck tickets would be going to 100,000+ fans who had already registered and attempted to buy tickets. Hey, I’m not saying it was a good concept, just that it was what the team publically said it was trying to do.
The plan to reduce attendance to promotethe case to move was more important at the time. /broken record
My favorite part is the wording of the press release:
They took pains to make sure everyone knew that they didn’t want more fans in the ballpark.
Thanks for the info! Have you heard any talk of whether they will offer some sort of playoff priority to folks who pony up early for 2013 season tickets?
Yes, I also have the information…wow I am like an A’s ticketing employee..LOL..The A’s began taking deposits for 2013 season tickets on Tuesday and if you put down a deposit for 2013 Season Tickets then you will have the option of purchasing a Playoff strip and those people will be seated right after current season ticket holders!
Nice! Thanks.
Yeah. We’ll figure it out when I get the offer.
It’s only an issue if we get to the World Series, based on previous experience there won’t be any trouble getting single game tickets for the first two rounds.
I know I wasn’t part of the original plan, but if you need an extra $10-20 to get the strip count me in-you guys need to be at those games…
Maybe the A’s will let nine of us take turns sitting in the one seat for one inning each.
The game will now be paused while we empty the stdium and reenter those who bought our special half game pack…
