The 2012 Barbara Feldon Game at Camden Yards 414

It’s a familiar lineup as the A’s face Zach Britton, the fifth straight game the opponent has started an LHP. Crisp, Gomes (DH), Reddick, Cespedes, Carter, Inge, Norris, Hicks and Weeks behind Jarrod Parker.

The O’s have managed a 52-47 record with a Pythagorean W-L of 44-55. You do that by going 19-6 in one-run games and winning 10 of 12 in extra innings.

It’s a humid 91 degrees at the Inner Harbor right now. Better than yesterday when it was 100 degrees at the same time of day.

Greatest isn’t my personal opinion, more of my gauge on popularity+quality+cultural impact. It’s unfortunate the 60’s & 70’s dinosaurs had the opportunity to have more cultural impact than any band could possibly have today. Radiohead gets lots of points for their live work, polyrhythms, the sliding scale album, and a consistently high quality of output. Fans dropped off because of genre changes and experimentalism, not because the band’s output went down in quality.

I’m a little prejudiced in their favor right now, because I listened to very little radio in the 2000’s and ignored Hail To The Thief and In Rainbows until about a month ago. So, I’m the opposite of bored of them. I also admit dude can’t sing his way out of a paper bag, but at least he sings badly in a very unique way, like Neil Young.

You think Thom Yorke can’t sing? I vehemently disagree. His vocals on The Bends and OK Computer are top notch. I think he’s just lost interest in singing melodically since then. He uses his voice as just another instrument in the mix now.

          Revised greatest solo artists list:

          1. Prince 2. Bowie 3. Young 4. Dylan 5. Springsteen

Prince and Bowie weren’t consistent, and both dropped off the face of the earth later in their careers (Prince never to recover.)

You say Prince was inconsistent, I say he was too generous with letting everything find a way out at some point.

And if the dropping off the face of the Earth is intentional, is it really a bad thing. I think Bowie was this way too, but I dont know. But for Prince it seems like a decision to just release things much more raw and having control of how they are put out, when, and what he can do with them. Downside means no filter, but like the chariman said, he does it his way..

If Prince had stopped making music around the time of the NPG he would have been Sandy Koufax.

#2 I remember at the time thinking there was always some kind of competition between the bands on a bill.

I was 12 and understood it from a prism of sport, so I may have and excuse. I don’t get why people would actively dislike the opening act

you’re seeing it with your current-era glasses on, but the late 70s early 80s seemed to be a time to take sides, musically. disco vs rock. rock vs new wave. metal vs punk. techno vs industrial. but then came DRI’s crossover, sampling, and lollapalooza, and now we’re well again.

“Moneyball” leftovers in the consciousness + a decent team + pie = public interest.

If sympathetic magic(k) means a damned thing, the A’s are going to remain the luckiest club in the Northern Hemisphere just from the sheer generation of positive victorious emotion related to the A’s from people all over the world watching Moneyball, in belated premieres and through home media. It’s like hundreds of thousands or millions of people praying for the same thing, to a certain extent. Let’s hope they remain healthy enough to exploit this heavily fortuitous background energy climate.

        • whiteshoes40 Jul 27,2012 6:48 pm || Up

I doubt it will substantially change my FB experience… mainly I dislike the layout and how easy it makes it to jump to my profile circa 2005, when I was in college and using Facebook (i.e. posting on friends’ walls and, when it became an option, posting status updates) about 10,000 times more frequently than I do now. There’s nothing incriminating that I really care if people see — just a lot of silliness.

Kinda. I rise early, open the windows, turn the whole house fan on, and crank up something loud.

Today it was The Fall and then Warpaint.

The last few days it was Radiohead. I’m kinda late to the party on that band (I avoided them because they were popular).

Radiohead is a fairly consistent 2-3 WAR album band, with the exception of a >10 WAR peak (each) for The Bends and OK Computer.

I’m coming from a different angle. As a bassist with a polyrhythm fetish, I think the >10WAR peaks are Amnesiac, Hail To The Thief, and King Of Limbs.

My god man, that was a revelation!

I heard it for the first time in my favorite (long since deceased) record store and had to have it. I was blown away that what I had considered up to that time to be an annoying radio pop band had done something so weird and glorious. I brought it to band practice (I was in a sort of shitty hippie band at that time, slumming with younger friends who needed a guitarist), and was telling the drummer that we should do a song with a skippy trippy poly thing going on, like the title track of “Kid A.”, but he couldn’t see beyond the forest that was the idea that the band used canned drums in the first place for the trees that were the idea of playing something other than 4/4 for FKing once! That band died shortly thereafter.

Alright, Kid A was a run-of-the-mill MVP type of 7-8 WAR album. I wasn’t fair to it. I’d say their three-album peak (Bends-OK-A) was like 10-12-8 WAR.

You’re not listening to them as a bass player, drummer, or songwriter, tho. Their rhythm section craftsmanship is impeccable. Even when they’re playing in four, you can hear other patterns emerge, especially with choppier guitar riffage on top. I also love how they incorporated Mr. Yorke’s digital composition methods into full-band arrangements, as well as mixing canned and analog-generated sounds.

However, if I was listening to them as a dancer, I would probably think they’re too slow and boring, except the new material with two drummers. That shit’s got dancing potential.
