      The conventional wisdom in today’s Preakness says the top two Derby finishers, Bodemeister (7) and I’ll Have Another (9), will once again dual for the top spot today. At 8:5, Bodemeister is not just the favorite, but at such a short price that there’s not much value to be had betting that way. There’s a minority school of thought, though, that Bode’s tank could be emptying after setting a scorching pace in two other races in the last five weeks. He was fading late in the Derby; was that only the extra sixteenth mile? Short price and possible fatigue have me leery of Bodemeister.

      People also like two other Derby horses who had less than perfect trips but finished strongly, Went The Day Well (5) and Creative Cause (6). I’m strong on WTDW, as the horse who arguably looked the best of all of them in the Derby’s final furlongs. Creative Cause flew back to LA and then back to the East Coast in the two weeks since the Derby, somewhat oddly, raising fatigue and soundness questions which lead me to pass. Almost no one likes any of the “new shooters,” horses that weren’t in the Derby. Neither do I really, but I see a chance that Zetterholm (4) hits the board, as a Zutrow-trained NY horse at Pimlico, with 3 straight wins, at a nice 20-1 price.

      I’ll Have Another got a great Derby trip and ran down Bode to win. He’s been described as a “game” or “handy” horse, with the ability to run a variety of types of races successfully. I see IHA stalking Bode from his favorable outside post position and winning the Preakness with a great late kick. The big question for me is whether Bode fades just enough to finish second, or fades completely out of the money. My ticket attempts to find value in both of those possibilities:

      $10 to WIN on I’ll Have Another (9)
      $10 to SHOW on Went The Day Well (5)
      $10 to SHOW on Zetterberg (4)

      $3 EXACTA BOXES with I’ll Have Another (9) plus Zetterberg (4), Went The Day Well (5), or Creative Cause (6), for a total of $18, as my attempt to maximize value from an IHA win, given his fairly short price.

      $4 TRIFECTAS with Bodemeister (7) and I’ll Have Another (9) in either of the top two slots, plus Zetterberg (4), Went The Day Well (5), or Creative Cause (6) in the third slot, for a total of $24, as a hedge to maybe extract something if the race goes according to the conventional wisdom.

      Total of $72.

      Lastly, Black-Eyed Susans are gross. I’m having more juleps.

      "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."

      I’ve been convinced in each of the last three seasons that the A’s were going to get a no-hitter thrown against them at some point. There’s a certain feeble quality to the A’s lineup sometimes that makes it feel quite possible.

  67. lenscrafters May 19,2012 4:37 pm

    Kurt Suzuki’s at bat in the 6th

    With Barton on first, Suzuki swung at balls 5 and 6.

    • bear88 May 19,2012 4:58 pm || Up

      That was a maddening at-bat. But Ross wasn’t going to be able to get a bunt down, and the A’s got one hit, so I can’t blame Suzuki for the loss.

      If nothing else, the at-bat was Exhibit A for why the A’s need someone else at catcher. The inevitable pop-up was just icing on the cake.

      • lenscrafters May 19,2012 5:23 pm || Up

        If Suzuki would’ve taken the walk, who knows what would’ve happened. Vogelsong might’ve thrown different pitches to Ross, or better yet, Melvin might have had the sense to PH for him.

        • JamesV May 19,2012 5:43 pm || Up

          I’d say it was almost a guarantee to PH for Ross if Suzuki reached.

        • dmoas May 19,2012 7:36 pm || Up

          Not really. It takes one to win but you also have to give up one to lose and up until that point it was scoreless. Add a strike to the batter instead of adding a runner and it changes the entire complexion of the inning.

        I read elsewhere the warrant the police provided afterwards was without a signature, which would make the arrests and seizures illegal no? Or at least not admissible in court, lawyer FK’ers – opinions?
