The conventional wisdom in today’s Preakness says the top two Derby finishers, Bodemeister (7) and I’ll Have Another (9), will once again dual for the top spot today. At 8:5, Bodemeister is not just the favorite, but at such a short price that there’s not much value to be had betting that way. There’s a minority school of thought, though, that Bode’s tank could be emptying after setting a scorching pace in two other races in the last five weeks. He was fading late in the Derby; was that only the extra sixteenth mile? Short price and possible fatigue have me leery of Bodemeister.
People also like two other Derby horses who had less than perfect trips but finished strongly, Went The Day Well (5) and Creative Cause (6). I’m strong on WTDW, as the horse who arguably looked the best of all of them in the Derby’s final furlongs. Creative Cause flew back to LA and then back to the East Coast in the two weeks since the Derby, somewhat oddly, raising fatigue and soundness questions which lead me to pass. Almost no one likes any of the “new shooters,†horses that weren’t in the Derby. Neither do I really, but I see a chance that Zetterholm (4) hits the board, as a Zutrow-trained NY horse at Pimlico, with 3 straight wins, at a nice 20-1 price.
I’ll Have Another got a great Derby trip and ran down Bode to win. He’s been described as a “game†or “handy†horse, with the ability to run a variety of types of races successfully. I see IHA stalking Bode from his favorable outside post position and winning the Preakness with a great late kick. The big question for me is whether Bode fades just enough to finish second, or fades completely out of the money. My ticket attempts to find value in both of those possibilities:
$10 to WIN on I’ll Have Another (9)
$10 to SHOW on Went The Day Well (5)
$10 to SHOW on Zetterberg (4)
$3 EXACTA BOXES with I’ll Have Another (9) plus Zetterberg (4), Went The Day Well (5), or Creative Cause (6), for a total of $18, as my attempt to maximize value from an IHA win, given his fairly short price.
$4 TRIFECTAS with Bodemeister (7) and I’ll Have Another (9) in either of the top two slots, plus Zetterberg (4), Went The Day Well (5), or Creative Cause (6) in the third slot, for a total of $24, as a hedge to maybe extract something if the race goes according to the conventional wisdom.
Total of $72.
Lastly, Black-Eyed Susans are gross. I’m having more juleps.

If Suzuki would’ve taken the walk, who knows what would’ve happened. Vogelsong might’ve thrown different pitches to Ross, or better yet, Melvin might have had the sense to PH for him.
Not really. It takes one to win but you also have to give up one to lose and up until that point it was scoreless. Add a strike to the batter instead of adding a runner and it changes the entire complexion of the inning.
Additionally, the records allege the trio managed to amass an unusual collection of weapons, including swords, throwing stars and a hunting bow, which they planned to use during their operations.
There is so much fail here. Frist on the part of the writer “managed?” you mean they bought?
planned to use in the operation? what are they 14?

Success! My quick julep-infused scratch calculation says a $183.60 return vs $58 in losses.
Quality!
Zetterholm ran a strong fourth too, could’ve been even better.
I saw a middle-aged Brian Wilson last night. It was very disturbing.
How was the Beach Boys’ concert?
I am not sure that brian wilson is “middle aged”
I’m pretty sure he’s either dry aged or beechwood aged.
More like “pickled in his own natural juices.”
Full count to the first 2 hitters. Glad to see Ross is ready to save the bullpen today.
Not this shit again.
Considering the heavy use of the bullpen last night, Tyson needs to throw a LOT more strikes than he threw in the 1st.
Whew.

hey guys!
I wasnt going to try the new BK chicken strips, but if STEVEN TYLER is working drive thru for them….

Really?
lol robben. miserable game.
Barton 5 game hit streak?
Over or under?
over
0 runs in 2 innings is swell, but if you need 55 pitches to do it you can’t stay in MLB for much longer.
A no-hitter by Vogelsong today would not shock me even a little bit.
I’ve been convinced in each of the last three seasons that the A’s were going to get a no-hitter thrown against them at some point. There’s a certain feeble quality to the A’s lineup sometimes that makes it feel quite possible.
I was fully expecting a perfect game last sunday. Sadly it might be today instead.
And that took care of that.
i thought i was witnessing one from wakefield in 2009…
and this year, if nothing else pans out sooner, A’s’ll probably face verlander at his house in september.
blah, blah, blah!
i want to win!!!
Maintain the mediocrity!
Anyone w/ the requisite searching prowess know when the last we had this many games at or above .500 was?
i’m totally down with the “maintenance of mediocrity” here. ;) ♥
17 games at or above .500 between May 1st & May 19th last year.
Crazy sychronicity
Oh and thanks!
FK yeah!
Only Ray Fosse can describe a concept so poorly that Vince Cotroneo is made to seem a genius by comparison.

Heh heh. Probably more than one.
But, thats history…
Anyone else hoping for some sparks from Smith and Gomes now that Manny is nigh?
Well, I see they’re each hitting a robust .190 over the past week, so there’s nowhere to go but up.
Thingle!
boo-urns!!!!
OK, well we got the hit out of the way. That’ll make the rest of the game more sleepy than exciting.
and chelsea is gonna pull this off, though really it’s bayern who served it on a platter for them.
Drogba!!!
nice for him. but chelsea didn’t really deserve it (opinion based on this game alone).
I really hate Chelsea, but I do like that big, greasy-haired man.
done.
Yay double playz
YES!
Runs pls
Vogelsong means Birdsong in German. Maybe the A’s should have Otis Birdsong (former NBA player) playing first base to counter this.
To be fair, Otis Birdsong probably would have swung at a few of those pitches out of the zone, and he can’t do the splits either.
Otis Birdsong should have put out a single on Philadelphia International.
Though he missed on the pitch, that 94 mph two seam fastball to Crawford was nasty.
Wow Kurt, just wow….
This is how I feel…
Its safe btw
I don’t know-the scrollover begs to differ.
hence the disclaimer, worth a look!
sample
I agree with Fosse, there’s no way in hell that that pitch didn’t catch part of Vogelsong’s bat. And I gotta think the ump knows that too.
Um, oops.
Watching that Suzuki at-bat, was there any doubt he would end up popping out?
that’s called a hitting a suzuki
BOOBIES
Also, I know people like to rag on the Coliseum grass once football season starts, but it seems to me there is an ugly stripe across the outfield of this supposedly pristine temple of baseball.
Yup.
Yeah, it kinda looks like sh!t out there
Roger Waters’ “The Wall” was there last week.
Intentionally putting Ross in a 2-0 count seems like a terrible idea in retrospect.
That was a horrible strategy, granted Suzuki can’t throw out a runner these days, but Tyson has been walking guys so the control really isn’t there…
MOJO!!!!
Keep the balance right!
holy shit, Chelsea.
Thanks, and go As.
Osaka Hanshin Tigers cap sighting behind the visiting on-deck circle
Floating stadium!
Damn near, huh?
floating toilet. and way too close. we don’t need their turds in or around the bay.
Bullshit call
That ball clearly hit the bat. Vogelsong didn’t even react like it hit his hand or fingers.
That was bullshit…
Wow, what a load of shit. If that had hit Vogelsong’s hand he would have been writhing around in pain.
Thanks, and go As.
These umpires, why are they on the field again? Certainly not to watch the FK’ing game. Replay yesterday, I’ve had it with this bullshit. Put FK’ing Ray Charles out there at this point, he’ll see it better than these morons.

Robo umps and replay please. Fuck the “human” element, the players already provide that thank you very much. And fuck the giants.
Man, I hate to think the man’s out to get us, but that is almost worse than Thursdays call.
It was. Thursday at least you could see the rather flawed logic that it was trapped. This one? There was the bat sound, there was the ball flying off the bat and there was the pitcher neither shaking a hand nor rubbing any part of his body nor needing medical attention. There was ZERO sign that he had been hit by the ball.
The hit the bat between his hands. Unbelievable.
If that leads to the Gnats winning the game I’m going to FreaK out.
0-0 w/ no outs, BS
just setting up the triple play…
I’m almost certain it is going to lead to that, so I’m FreaKing out now.
I don’t care how bad the umpires are FKing us – there’s no excuse for not throwing strikes.
Why Ball-four Bob…
Grant Balfour’s July trade value is eroding quickly.
so are his confidence, hairline, watchability, and oddly enough, ‘strineness.
THROW. STRIKES.
So if the ump could hear that foul tip, how could he not have heard the ball hit Vogelsong’s bat square?
I was thinking the exact same thing.
Robots pls.
Well if this game gets blown open at least I have TATER TOTS in 4 minutes!
HOLY SHIT HORSE RACING
Thanks, and go As.
Wow, what a race.
Indeed. That was awesome. Two straight great races now heading into Belmont with a Triple Crown shot alive. Fun.

scout: ballfour showed faith in suzuki by throwing that ball in the dirt with a runner on 3rd.

faith.
Thank god Smith caught it. I would have hated to have the guy with the big friggin hose to have a chance to throw out a guy at the plate.
DAMN DAMN DAMN
Christ, Grant Balfour sucks donkey dicks.
A’s 0, Umpires 1, Giants 1
Reclamation project!

Thanks, and go As.
have to have been good to get reclaimed.
FK this shit. Next pitching change, Melvin ought to go apeshit on the plate ump.
Also, Grant Balfour sucks.
there you go.
Done!
Thanks, and go As.
you are a prophet
I’m impressed!
Good for him.
This is one thing I like about Melvin vs his predecessor – Geren just seemed to take it like a little bitch.
Some of our FKers are too young to remember, but any time I invoke the memory of Steve Boros, this is exactly what I have in mind.
Boros was like the anti-Billy Martin. In terms of handling pitchers, this was probably a good thing. Otherwise …
as a kid I remember hearing he was “intellectual”. I eventually decided that meant “dead”.
I think the ump overreacted when Melvin told him about the switch; he didn’t realize that the A’s had a relief pitcher named Arya Blindbluyadumfuk..
LOL
Take that, reality TV producers: OUR Indian pitching signees pan out!
Thanks Bob, I feel a little better.
this.
There’s just no reason to play the games if the umpires are going to decide the outcome. This is 2 of the last 3 where a completely shitkick call happened in a pivotal situation.
Yup…
N! B! A!
N! B! A!
Can we bring Threets up pls?
Huh. Bad things have happened to the A’s since I last looked.
Umps 4, Giants & A’s 0.
Melvin better be expecting another “I missed it” phonecall from an ump today.
Regardless of bad umpiring, the bottom line is there wasn’t no hitting.
Yep
This is true, but all 4 Jive Ants runs scored in that inning, and without that call it’s possible we are still playing right now.
Also yep
I’m starting to really dislike that prissy little ballpark they have over there.
As soon as the A’s leave it tomorrow, I want a meteor to wipe it off the map – with the Gnats ownership and broadcasters still inside.
that was just…sad. :(
Yeah, I know. One hit.
But Major League Baseball hates the A’s. Just hates them, and screws them over every chance they get, in every way they can.
Kurt Suzuki’s at bat in the 6th
With Barton on first, Suzuki swung at balls 5 and 6.
That was a maddening at-bat. But Ross wasn’t going to be able to get a bunt down, and the A’s got one hit, so I can’t blame Suzuki for the loss.
If nothing else, the at-bat was Exhibit A for why the A’s need someone else at catcher. The inevitable pop-up was just icing on the cake.
If Suzuki would’ve taken the walk, who knows what would’ve happened. Vogelsong might’ve thrown different pitches to Ross, or better yet, Melvin might have had the sense to PH for him.
I’d say it was almost a guarantee to PH for Ross if Suzuki reached.
I thought they should have PH for Ross even after Suzuki popped out.
So I was at a funeral. You guys too?
Just watched the vogelsong HBP. Even Krukow thought it was a bad call.
I’m surprised he would actually take off the black-and-orange tinted glasses long enough to admit it.
That’s how bad a call it was.
he even said it before the replaay.
as noted above, it takes one to win so its kinda a moot point
Not really. It takes one to win but you also have to give up one to lose and up until that point it was scoreless. Add a strike to the batter instead of adding a runner and it changes the entire complexion of the inning.
where’s the vid? i’ve been waiting for it in mlb.com.
no video. IN msrket games are available for viewing about an hour after the conclusion of the game to MLB.tv subscribers, of which I am one.

Freaky deeky
i read the signatureless thing here.
Also when Chicago starts looking like a Gaza checkpoint you have to wonder a bit, is dissent, a great American tradition, even possible?
Of course – but only in the designated protest pens.
it could render the evidence seized inadmissible. it depends on a few factors.
pfft. who needs a trial for guantánamo?
So did pre-emptive arrest become admissible under the Patriot Acts?
I’m still curious if any of it was legal or constitutional for a police force.
I think there is no such thing as “preemtive arrest”
They are saying the defendants entered into a consiracy to commit “x” act and were arrested. I think. I am not reading it too closely.
isn’t this riding on a newish thing where they determine areas, such as around NATO conference, and the qualifications for arrest fall under national security and are less exigent than everyday law?

It happened in late October or November when OWS was heating up IIRC.
My understanding was it pertained to an area surrounding the physical location of an event, not private residences.
this coincides with my factoid memory. it must be true.
