      I have to make a dessert tonight for a vegan celiac who also doesn’t eat chocolate.

      I’m thinking air might be a good pie filler!

    yay for social progress, but oh lady, you do NOT want to go to argentina for work/economic reasons. i’m predicting argentina is the new cuba, at least till the presidenta’s dynasty wears off.

    the EU is looking to put sanctions on the country because it expropriated YPF last week. YPF was the state-run oil E&P till the 90s, when it was privatized, and quickly sold to the highest bidders with a select few members of the governmental elite profiting greatly, with repsol, a spanish company, holding a majority of the stock. in the last few weeks, and yes, it happened that quickly, cristina decided on and pushed through gov a move to take 51% of the stock back, all of it from repsol, leaving them with 6%. the fallout is still to be determined and could involve european sanctions against argentina, but let me take a wild guess and say that, at home, a select few members of the governmental elite will profit greatly and the people will see nothing but propaganda.

    meanwhile, when the select few who were allowed to buy dollars in argentina (ever since a law from last october forbade it for most) went to the exchange houses and were denied. seriously, you needed special permission form some gov’tal committee to buy US dollars and this week even that permission was restricted. because apparently there was an outflow of U$23 billion last year (really? well, it’s the official number… meaning that some official gave it to the press to put it in ink). so now, the only one who is buying dollars in argentina is… the argentine central bank! (official number again, U$5.7 billion so far this year.)

    add to which, imports have been blocked. and are getting blocked-er.

    so yeah, great place to be from and have your ID/papers done… as long as you don’t have to actually live there.

          it’s matambre a la parrilla. (mata + hambre = kill + hunger), it’s a flank steak rolled up with stuff in it. usually made in the oven, and served sliced thin as a cold cut. this is the grilled version.

      That’s about what I figured.

      One can’t legislate what takes at least a generation and a half of social progress to achieve.

          well, it all adds up. at the people level, wage earners rely on the family group to survive. the average single person wouldn’t be able to afford rent, so everybody lives in family. people don’t flee the parents at 18 like we do here. and even after marriage, it’s not unknown for the couple to move into one of the parents’ homes. but this is one of the joys of living there, the closeness. maybe that facilitates interpersonal understanding and leads to social progress?

            Hell, even the flee thing is a more recent development here and very slightly trending back.

            • AV May 11,2012 12:27 pm || Up

              yeah… it’s hard to explain. it’s part of the national psychology. they don’t want to leave. the feeling is, why would you?? …there’s no family out there!! while here it’s more like, go out and make it on your own! think about TV tropes and how people living with mom and dad are “losers.” and from the parents’ side, i can’t help but think of red from 70s show telling eric that on his 18th birthday he’s getting a one-way bus ticket and a kick in the ass, or somesuch.

              my 20-yr-old cousin was here for three months just this winter and he would skype with his parents and sisters every. single. night. (okay, 5 out of 7 nights.) for hours. because he wanted to. to me, raised here, that was ridiculously strange, distasteful even, and at his age i didn’t even go home for xmas (home being 15 minutes down the freeway) because it meant not doing my own thing with the friends i made.

                Their way kind of makes more sense. All living expenses and responsibilities are split over more people. Leaves everyone with more money and time on their hands. And if something bad happens, you’ve got people readily available to assist. And when you get old, you can actually retire while having ways of staying active and relevant.

          • PDXAthleticsfan May 11,2012 12:44 pm || Up

            It doesn’t sound all that different from many other places, though. Russia/FSU was certainly that way 20 years ago, and likely today, although most couples aspired to live at least a few blocks away from the parents. Without any data to back it up, the desire to make do for yourself away from your family seems an American concept, or at the very least a Western one. Or maybe it’s just in affluent countries where people have the means to do so, do so.

            A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.

    Hey, I know there are no rules with this group of FKers, but what’s the protocall on blatant self promotion? How would people feel about me posting the link to the online auction to benefit Albany Preschool. I’ve put a fuckton of time into it, we have some great items, and I really need it to go well.

        Here it is. Bid early and often. Although if you outbid me for the private Cessna tour, we will have words (I’m kidding, as I want all the items to go for crazy of money, but I also don’t have crazy money to spend and I would love to win the tour).

        • PDXAthleticsfan May 11,2012 1:29 pm || Up

          Good luck. Last weekend, we went to an auction for Spawn1’s kindergarten-to-be. The big item was a puppy that ended up going for $1100.

          We ended up with a “ticket” for Spawn1 to attend an ice cream/pizza party with the school’s PE teacher (who is awesome!) and $50 in handyman’s services.

          Mostly, we’re just happy to see that it’s a school that is very well-supported by former and current parents and it costs about half of what we’re paying now for pre-school.

          A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
          • Kylianna May 11,2012 3:16 pm || Up

            They auctioned a puppy? o.o

            • PDXAthleticsfan May 11,2012 3:22 pm || Up

              Yep. They made sure to parade him around to all of the classrooms in the week beforehand so that the kids would beg the parents to get him.

              By all accounts and my own observations at the auction, he was pretty mellow for a puppy – a labradoodle, IIRC.

              A soliloquy of fresh-sounding ideas which would probably be disastrous.
              • Kylianna May 11,2012 6:04 pm || Up

                I hope he went to someone who actually wanted a puppy and not just a fun way to donate. D:

                • PDXAthleticsfan May 12,2012 7:55 am || Up

                  They seemed genuinely excited to get him – and from what I understand, the people who got him are good people.

            • batgirl May 18,2012 12:44 pm || Up

              The dog one of course, and also a few of the restaurant ones. I’ve got my eye on about 4 others, so when I get some more time this weekend Imma be upping my bidding! (I’ve since been out bid for one thing, but hope to prevail in the end.) I love silent auctions, though this is just the second time I’ve participated in a web one. Unfortunately I’m going to Xanadu the Musical in Walnut Creek on Sunday just as the auction closes, so you won’t have the benefit of the brain dead end-of-auction fever that typically overtakes me.

              Next year get a Champ Bailey football in there and I will be all over that action!

        Ack is right. Lets just say that I’m not pleased with ebay right now. This is probably more about Reddick not being able to handle CF than it is about Taylor not hitting much. With Cespedes questionable and Coco out, Cowgill is a more useful player than Taylor.

    • FreeSeatUpgrade May 11,2012 3:09 pm || Up

      Miller I guess I can understand, since he’s pitched 3.2 innings in two days and the A’s have 13 more games before the next off day, and since McCarthy’s about to break and they’ll need 8.2 IPs from the pen Saturday.

      Sending Taylor down for Cowgill is madness.

    44 K, 7 BB, 31 H in 43 innings at Midland, 2.49 ERA.

    He last pitched Monday, so maybe some of you lucky FKers will get to see him tomorrow. Although that would also probably mean that Godfrey was getting called up to start for the A’s, which would not necessarily be good news.

          I’m not sure how much weight to give that poll. As far as I can tell, it is a survey of “adults,” not “likely voters” or even “registered voters,” so I’m inclined to discount it heavily. Anyway, he had a compelling political justification in terms of motivating his base to campaign for and donate to him. It’s a risk, but a calculated one.

      And how about his examples of wasteful research topics?

      Flake was quick to give examples of the “waste” that motivated his amendment. There was the “$700,000 to develop a new model for international climate change analysis” and the “$600,000 to try to figure out if policymakers actually do what citizens want them to do.”
