Hail and farewell, Mr. Sendak.
Yesterday’s thread was getting crowded, so here’s a new one and a couple of links.
If you want to weigh in on the change of management companies at the Coliseum, Friday morning is your chance.
Robert Gammon of the East Bay Express joins the chorus calling for Wolff and Fisher to sell.  Also, an ad in today’s Oakland Tribune.
Perfect title. While everyone wants to keep remembering “Where the Wild Things Are” only, give me “Really Rosie” any day.
The copy of the Nutshell Library that I read as a child has gone on to one set of nieces and nephews, and now to my great-nieces.
I always wanted to be Max as a kid.
I’m not going to chose one, but I do love In the Night Kitchen, and Pierre quite a bit.
i’m totally un-prochrome… but hate that firefox forces you to DL PDFs.
I have a acrobat reader plugin for my firefox (and on linux too). It has an irritating bug where it constantly creates a file C:\nppdf32Log\debuglog.txt in my home directory, but it works otherwise.
i don’t even have a C drive!!!
me either
lol
I don’t have a clue what I have on my FF, but I can read PDFs within FF w/o problems
huh I don’t have that problem but i prefer to use evince as my pdf viewer.
I only started happening after a recent update. A quick google search revealed that it is a known problem, but I haven’t tried to do anything about it.
I think that’s actually either an Apple or Adobe problem, not really FF’s fault.
You should try either this or this plugin, depending on what version your system is.
hmm… when i switch to safari, it lets me open the PDF via acrobat right in a browser window. opera works too. chrome used to work too, but i deleted it because of all the outgoing info. it’s just FF that gives me the download palette.
The un-PDF version of the open letter is available from newballpark here. ML just banned his worst troll, so it’s not quite so painful to read the comments as usual.
thanks.
Yeah, I cheered the moment I read he was gone. I’m fairly “pro-SJ” but holy shit was that guy like a fking child reacting and overreacting to anything and everything.
It’s about time.
I switched from Adobe to FoxIt Reader long ago. love it.
Thanks, and go As.
that makes sense for most, but i can’t really switch. adobe CS is what i work on all day every day.
the only exposure i had to sendak was just working at a bookstore once, and feel nor remember anything personal about his books, but this FB post from this morning involves my career, so i paid attention:
“Fuck them is what I say. I hate those e-books. They cannot be the future. They may well be. I will be dead. I won’t give a shit.†– Maurice Sendak
Sendack is really an amazing man.
His interview with Colbert a few weeks ago showed that Sendak retained all of his brilliance right to the end.
Totally! Those interviews were fantastic.
I recently read “The Changeling” by Kenzaburo Oe. It was awesome, like all of Oe’s books, but there was also an unexpected final chapter where the wife of the protagonist gets into an extended analysis of Sendak’s “Outside Over There” and the parallels between that picture book and a childhood experience shared by her husband and her brother that forms the central event of the novel. It was a really interesting and very academic analysis to drop right at the end of a novel (admittedly a pretty academic novel). Anyway, I want to read “Outside Over There” now.
woo-hoo! early mother’s day gift. guess what just randomly came on my itunes?
“and from the coliseum in oakland, welcome into the bill king broadcast booth on mother’s day. it’s the A’s against the tampa bay rays. it’s the final game of this 6-game home stand for the green and gold…”
I have that on my iTunes too. Always makes me happy.
the only surprise so far is that this was 2010. 2 years already???
I know! And I need to get that! How do I get that?
i can’t remember how i got it. if it wasn’t strictly prohibited to even have one, much less pass it along, i’d promise to bring an mp3 of it to the next FKup… wink wink.
I got it as a perfectly legal download from the A’s website, though I don’t know if it’s still there. Anyway, not too contraband.
um… me too! probably!
[shifty eyes and sheepish looks]
Ooooh! I’m in a rebellious mood! Please do bring it. Are you coming tonight?
can’t make it. i bit off more than i can chew workwise this week.
Aww, bummer. Next time, then. We’ll miss you.
“miss me?? you don’t know me!!!”
:P
I said we, I didn’t say me. :D

It’s like spring training went on for two months and tonight is the real Opening Night.
Yes. I’m tempted to put some bunting on my radio.
Vince,
Just a suggestion. Don’t add 2 Ks to the end of a word that already ends in K. If you are going for effect, add at least one more.
Your fan,
Aardvark
Probably just better to lead with KK instead.
Good call, Aardvarkkk.
“the kid form stockton has done it for the A’s!!”
well that was fun. i even got a little nervous again.
also of note, tomorrow is the 2nd anniversary of braden’s, but today is the 44th of catfish hunter’s.
In braden’s defense, Catfish hunter is a lot older.
Thanks, and go As.
i’m just saying, if anybody needs a reason to celebrate with beer or the like, there’s no need to wait those pesky 24 hours.
… although significantly more dead.
Well shit. Now I haz a sad.
Wasn’t Braden’s on the 4th?
may 9.
Oh shit! You are so right, how could I forget that?
you were there with someone who’s birthday it was, no?
Duh!
Having to do with the last month or so of posts lost, this.
Or, this.
So……my football team has been destroyed. Sad times.
Rovers? You think they’ve gone down for good?
I think there’s a great chance they’ll go into administration.
That sucks. What’s the path for them to get back into the Premier League?
roughly win, place, or show in the lower league. the show is more complicated than that with a mini tournament, but roughly that. i think.
Interesting system. What if the two teams with the worst record in MLB got relegated to AAA?
Doesn’t work that way. Don’t forget the MILB affiliations.
yeah, it’s complicated by the farm system.
It would have to be 20 MLB teams in the upper and 10 in the lower. But if you thought it was hard to keep & retain FAs now, good luck in a system like that. The draft would have to be overhauled to benefit that lower league a lot more in order to compensate.
i love the relegation/promotion system in soccer. keeps the competition alive and even the bottom teams, or, especially the bottom teams, have something to fight for at the end of the season. but even the middle teams can’t just let their arms drop if they’re not winning the season, because in some cases the points that count toward relegation encompass previous seasons. so… no tanking just to get the draft pick! (are there draft picks in soccer?)
i’m under the impression that most countries have some form of it. in argentina (up to and including this year, they’re changing it slightly for next), the bottom 2 teams go straight to B, while the top two B teams go to A. and the 3rd/4th bottom teams in A play a home/away with the 3rd/4th top teams in B to see if anybody changes leagues.
2nd ¶ does not follow from “draft picks.” most countries have some form of relegation, not draft.
I adore the pro/rel system as a neutral. Not sure how I’d feel about it as a fan of a non-powerhouse team.
powerhouse? what powerhouse?
Seems like it’s gotten progressively worse in recent years, to the point where promoted teams don’t always even want to go up because of financial constraints and other pressures. Norwich and Swans have acquitted themselves well this year, though.
Seems to me that going up is a clear win even the team can’t hack it in the top flight, because they get at least one year of that sweet premiership TV money. The key is not to overspend trying to stay up, because then going back down is really going to hurt.
Bye Pompey
is there a salary cap in the lower leagues?
I don’t think so, but there may be rules about not going into massive debt following the Leeds United debacle. Without the TV money, a lower level club just can’t afford Prem salaries (although a huge relegated club like Newcastle a couple of years ago might be an exception).
Huge? When was the last time they won something?
And their owner footed that wage bill (then cashed the Andy Carroll transfer fee to pay himself back).
It’s literally Premiership or bust for a lot of clubs.
They have a big following, is all I meant.
Plenty of people in the media fall into that trap.
Show me your medals is all I can say.
Those damn media bastards!
Teams relegated from the Premiership also get a parachute payment to ease the transition.
They get five years of Premiership money (one year in the Prem then four years of ‘parachute payments’ that gradually decrease in value).
Obviously the dodgy Indian owners at Rovers will pocket those and fuck off.
No promotion/relegation soccer league that I know of has draft picks (or really any mechanism where the lower finishing teams are ‘rewarded’).
FWIW, I prefer the more darwinistic leagues to the more parity inducing leagues which is probably why I favor soccer and college football.
reverse question, is the US (acting as champion of the free market of course), the only country that created
trustsclosed leagues to protect select sport franchises from outside competition?Other late developing soccer countries have closed leagues. Australia, Japan, Korea (I think). But yeah, historically it has been a U.S. thing, where the only way to break into the top flight league is to buy your way in or create a competing league and force a merger. I use this argument to pitch my conservative/libertarian friends on trying European/South American soccer. It’s the free market at work, in all it’s bloody glory.
interesting.
And they’re better for it.
Yeah, 1st and 2nd are automatically promoted. 3rd-6th play in a 4 team tournament for the final promotion spot.
They’ve got some unfortunate similarities to the A’s…
They do now they have shitty, shitty, shitty owners.
Apparently I’m drawn to the underdog. I must like misery.
All my teams were really good when I started following them. I only like underdogs in movies, in real life they rarely win in the end.
1. Never a fan, scared me. Also, I had no idea he was alive.
Aaarrgh. The queueing system on the cluster I use for analysis is completely FKed and it is impossible to start any jobs. I think my choices come down to either clean the lab or leave work early.
I think you know what you have to do.
Thanks, and go As.
Want some supercomputer time?
YOU!
I might need to get a list of dates those five superawesome tickets are available. Dad-in-Laws Bday is tomorrow.
Thanks, and go As.
I think you’ll need to pin it down a bit more – let me know a handful of dates you’d be interested in and I’ll find out which of them have both the pair and the triplet available.
Honestly, it’s pretty open. Preferably something not too far in the future, weekend v weekday doesn’t even matter much. Off the top of my head trying to think of schedules with kids and stuff, I’m thinking either a Tuesday or a Saturday night would work best.
Based on that, of course the next 2 home series are Angels and Yankees lol. May 22nd maybe against Slegna?
Thanks, and go As.
OK – I’ll see what I can do.
Unfortunately I don’t have the phone number for the triplet at hand (I hope it’s on my desk at home and didn’t go through he laundry) but I’ll get onto it tomorrow.
No worries — I’m about to head out to pick up the boys and get stuff for the cold cut FKup, then head to the stadium. So if you want, you can just..
:slowly removes sunglasses:
…email me.
Thanks, and go As.
YOU!
Calls/emails in to both sources for upcoming available Tuesday or Saturday nights.
Muchos thank yous.
Thanks, and go As.
Things are still pretty FKed, but I’m managing to limp along.
More generally though we do have about a million core-hours per year for suborbital cmb work for anyone who wants some.
Yeah, QUIET definitely used some NERSC time (though much of the analysis for the 40 GHz paper was done on just a 12 node cluster). I think they are making heavier use of NERSC for the upcoming 90 GHz result.
So far a lot of the posts have been about soccer and computers. Next I’d like to talk about a computer that plays soccer.
” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>
I need my computer cluster to start working again, so I can get back to calculating VORP for all of those robot soccer players.
WAR > VORP
Thanks, and go As.
pfft….VORP is much more fun to say.
I’ve been studying my Spanish verbs lately, especially the ones that have the same roots as the English verb.
I haven’t seen VORPar on any of my verb lists yet, but if it pops up, you’ll be the first to know!
that’s because the R fell of at ellis island…
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/vapulear
Is “abortar” for missions too, or just fetuses?
My dream is to make bad VORP jokes in at least 3 different languages….well, it’s one of my dreams….most of the others involve golf or breasts, often both.
Breasts, man…
Wow.
I put my corset on the other day and they were shaped just right for their currently small size… They were beautiful. I cried a little.
If I had breasts all of the sudden I’d be feeling myself up pretty much non stop. This reminds me that I have to get my corset from the dry cleaners.
Like you don’t already do that anyway.
You got me….sadly I’m a pirates dream.
That’s why Pittsburgh wins so little. Rather than discuss opposing pitchers or strategy, the Pirates spend all their time in the locker room feeling themselves up!
But dude, when they’re attached to your body, you’re constantly feeling yourself up from the INSIDE!
The only thing I feel from the inside is hypertension.
I feel kinda sick to my stomach right now.
My posts will do that.
It has nothing to do with you, I can assure you… at least not this time!
Besides, usually when one of your posts causes me to get up and puke, it’s on a night I had too much beer and greasy food, so it’s probably all for the best anyways.
My best posts should either make a person laugh or puke.
If you can accomplish both in one post, the Pulitzer this year is yours!
I’m just like everyone else, I put my pants on one mechanical claw at a time.
Okay, what the FK.

Thanks, and go As.
THERE’s the Brandon McCarthy injury coverup tweet.
A year ago this sentence would have made little to no sense to me.
A year ago, Brandon McCarthy’ stick figure drawing was still my screensaver.
My screensaver is seasonal. Since it’s spring I have a lovely shot of Mr. Hand hunting down some squirrels in a field of blooming flowers.
Welp, now I’m worried.
I’m not mostly due to the fact that I’m actually a Royals fan.
Boooooooo. For lots of reasons. (I don’t like Ross.)
You don’t like dressing for less?
I hate how when I turn to Ross for my clothing needs, I expect to buy six and two-thirds, maybe seven items, but I always walk out of there with three, maybe four things, and they overcharge me for them to boot. Five days later, I expect a better shopping experience, but the same sh!t happens all over again.
Maybe the Ross in Oakland is just nervously or inefficiently run. Maybe Ross in Sacramento would be a better place to shop.
I remember Ross. I had a friend who worked there while I was working at the upscale, high class Target.
If this year is anything like the last, Ross will injure himself on Wednesday too.
I feel really lucky that I was able to be a groupie during Toto’s acoustic bluegrass period.
_ _ _ _
I had half of a really brutal root canal this morning (2nd half will be tomorrow), and I’m most definitely not going to the game tonight. If anyone wants my tix, email me, distantsun7 at gmail dot com, and I can transfer them to you via email. Or text me if you already have my number.
Ouch! That’s no fun.
Hopefully you’ll feel better by the weekend!
I insist on feeling better by the weekend! But I might not be able to make cookies I’d planned (they’re really labor-intensive, and I’ll likely be working overtime on Friday to make up for today & tomorrow).
If you make it to the RC game, will your wife be there too? I could try to figure out something gluten-free…
She won’t :(
Thank you for thinking about her, though!
You’re awesome and I hope tomorrow’s work is as painless as possible.
Well, having had my second hip replaced courtesy of NV Humane’s COBRA coverage (now expired), I applied to HealthNet for high-deductible coverage that’ll get me to Medicare. They turned me down, apparently because I’ve had too many hip replacements.
The fact that I’m fresh out of further hips did not impress them, I guess.
I have as many hips as I do nipples….3
FKing hippie.
MAKE VORP NOT WAR!
Or maybe they just know something about shoddy hip replacements …
Thoughtt about that, but I did advance scouting of sawboneses, literally, and these babies work really well. Plus I got titanium so I wouldn’t wear ’em out, even if I am, in fact, immortal. Further plus is I give hours of free entertainment to downtrodden TSA functionaries.
My new theory is that people who talk about having new theories are pricks.
Will that be published in the upcoming Arkansas Journal Of Bedicine?
Since it’s from Arkansas it’ll be written in crayon with lots of pictures.
So it’s looking like my plan to have a comb over using neck hair could work. I just have to get Trump’s approval since he owns the patent.
plugs from your asshair, baby!
Either that or just keep it nicely shaved and rock the Marine Drill Instructor look.
quarter inch cut every two weeks…..that’s how the boss likes it.
I think I’m gonna go sit on the back porch with the cats for a couple of minutes and smoke a bowl. I tell ya what, Bedsie… if your body and/or spirit betrays you when you get older, get yourself a medical MJ card. I’m sure one of the states around you’ll be less backwards by then.
I’ll probably just stick with binge drinking but thanks for the tip and enjoy your sit on the porch.
I think some binge drinking will help my vicodin do its job a little better today, but I’ll wait until after dinner. #unhealthyimpulses
I was thinking about what I would write followed by the hashtag #unhealthyimpulses
And then I stopped myself and now I’m visualizing a ball of energy made up of hundreds of tiny heads of Bobcat Goldthwait.
Don’t go all Kinkade on us, hear?
Ruben?
Cherise?
Have we ever figured out why some women pump their lips up? If I want to date a large mouth bass I’ll go to the lake.
MOuth as proxy. More perplexing to me is why they buy bolt-on boobies. Grotesque.
I’m not gonna do it, even if my natties don’t grow much (they likely will, tho).
I am seriously considering getting the trailer hitch turned into a scoop intake, tho.
That didn’t quite work, did it?
Have you considered attaching a grill?
that worked!
I just went out in public enfemme without lipstick yesterday for the first time. It was kind of liberating.
Maybe tomorrow I’ll attach large mouth bass heads to my earrings, as long as their scale color matches my ensemble.
And now back to our regularly scheduled programming….
I’m still debating whether to take that nap or not.
Maybe I should go meditate for a while. That might be the answer.
An interesting and only slightly hyperbolic NYT piece about the Rays fielding shifts.
Link is doing that weird thing where it embeds FK into the linked URL, rendering it 404. I’ve never known what causes that or how to fix it.
Fixed – http:// was missing off the front of the URL.
