The draft is almost here.
Possibilities for the A’s pick:
Mike Leake RHP ASU: Great command, good offspeed stuff, not that great of a fastball. Cheap. Many sources predict he will go to the A’s.
Grant Green SS USC: It would be awesome to get a SS. Many sources have him falling to the A’s. I want a SS.
Donovan Tate OF HS: A’s have apparently been following him closely. Very toolsy. Wants 6 million. Probably will go #3. Doesn’t sound that great.
Mike Trout CF HS: A’s have been following him closely. High bonus demand.
Aaron Crow RHP MO: May fall to the A’s due to bonus demands.

Those are the most rumored guys (Crow less than the others.) I want Green.
Ok, didn’t want Tate. It begins…
Pirates are one of the teams who might take Crow.
Pirates are cheap instead.
Regarding the grover thread:
1. You all keep talking about how fastball velocity declines from college to pro ball. Do you mean that velocity actually declines, or just that velocity measurements in college are inflated?
2. BlameChannel53 rules.
It actually declines, due (so they say) to pitching once a week as opposed to every 5 days. Probably the latter too…
Could it also be due to the attitudinal/incentive differences between college coaches and MLB orgs?
Hopgood is another afraid-about-money pick.
Looks like the A’s could get Matzek, who’s the best HS pitcher but wants a ton of money.
Callis called the first six picks correctly and seemed sure about #7&8 as well.
I think this is the first time twitter has done something cool.
The A’s are commenting after every pick.
“Geren is here”
“Ray Fosse just
walked inasked how great we feel.”I see the A’s are continuing their groundbreaking work in training and nutrition.
Why do all scouting thumbnails read like they were written by used-car salesmen?
I thought Leake might fall.
Ok, didn’t want Leake either, and the A’s wanted him. Green, Crow, and Matzek would be good.
Picking Stanford players=sucker move.
Picking RP in the top 10 = sucker move.
Well, not so bad when they have to give a bazillion dollars to Strasberg.
Still, it isn’t like they need to spend money on their MLB roster any time soon.
why I oughta
Excellent. HS pitchers scare me, and he was getting a ton of money. Crow or Green would be great.
Sigh. Green it is…
Crow would have been nice.
You win.
Let’s hope he is
and not
Yay. mlb.com guy just said he reminds him of Crosby. haha.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
They compared him to Crosby.
The A’s need a sign that says “K E RNIN G”
So — anybody named Gold/Gould in the draft?
That’s what I like to see in the “weaknesses” category.
!%!@@#$&^#$& Matt Holliday clone.
Reminds me of my evaluations when I was a GSI.
Grime Scene Investigator?
Were you ever called out to mikeA’s apartment?
Assuming he ramps up his energy level and starts trying hard (maybe Adam Kennedy can teach him that fierce grimace scouts swoon over), is he thought to be a fast track sort of guy, or should I forget about him until 2012 or so?
Well, college guys are all fast track to a certain extent. Given the Oakland SS situation I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in 2011, but probably 2012 is the best bet for him taking over as a starter.
So next year after our entire infield sprains their obliques?
sounds good!
GRANT! I’m stoked! I’ve watched him play for two years at SC … pretty much every home game. He was pressing a lot this year, and that worries me a lot. I’ve actually talked to the guy before and had a couple classes with him… and it’s strange to think that the A’s drafted him and he’s going to make millions of dollars.
He started out reaaaal slow this year, then started playing well, then hurt himself, and came back and wasn’t as good when he was hot. Then again, we all expected him to hit .400+ so it might have been coloured like that. Nice swing, destroyed the SC triples record, but Dedeaux is a large ballpark with deep power alleys. That said, there’s a reason he’s so highly rated. I’m excited.
The running joke last year was that our field reporter didn’t want to interview him after the game because she was sick of talking to him every single game. That’s a good thing, by the way… or it just means that SC baseball is no longer really good.
Sounds like an A to me.
A’s take college LHP Justin Marks.
cube
scouting video says 86-90.
Junior year: 3.47 era; 85.2IP 70H 27BB 106K
I predict he’ll go 9-2 every year.
4. Max Stassi, C, HS
5. Stephen Parker, 3B, BYU
6. Ryan Ortiz, C, Oregon St.
7. Ian Krol, LHP, HS
I went over to BA, and the picture on the front page of their website says “Catcher Max Stassi is the top player still available.”
article
:-)
The A’s twitterer (anyone know who it is?) also referred to Stassi as a “consensus top-30 talent” and 10th-rounder RHP Sam Dyson as a “consensus top 50 talent.” It’ll be interesting to see how much over slot the A’s will be willing to go to sign them.
“Dyson” should really be an infielder.
Whenever that’s the question, you know we’ve had a good draft.
I’d imagine they’ll at least try pretty hard to sign Stassi since they used their third pick.
Dyson was #38 on BA’s list.
Re: Stassi.
Scouting video
Fercrissakes, he hasn’t even signed with the A’s yet and he’s limping around the bases.
In East Germany, Stassi drafts you.
re his unimpressive scouting video: he should have known he was being filmed.
Yeah, that wins.
Heh.
all scouting videos
The one that stuck out was Leyland (HS C; projected in the third round.) Incredibly slow and looked silly at C, but he’s huge and has a great swing.
If he can hit like Thome, than he can catch like Thome.
