by the way, colon lost to boca 1-0 yesterday. or rather, boca won to colon. but watching that game (and napping partly through it), it was the first time i’ve ever noticed that this was an anatomical matchup, what with boca meaning mouth and all.

dammit. that inning was too quick and i missed live look in. i have no idea what they’re wearing.
It’s supposed to be the free MLB.TV game of the day, but my stupid internet is too slow and it won’t load for me. Have I mentioned lately that I hate AT&T?
i hate AT$T too!
i’ve spent hours. HOURS. on the phone with them solving simple problems such as, yes, my name shows up with two addresses and one phone number… this should not be a confusion. this is because i’m trying to move and retain the phone number, so can you stop sending the technician to the old address please?
Seriously. Check to see if you can switch to Sonic. Their DSL is plenty fast.
boca’s goal was one of the best so far in this argentine tournament. they turned around a colon corner and countered fairly perfectly, even if the blame lies with colon’s untidy defense a little bit. and silva, who’d come onto the team as a “goleador” but had only scored once so far in 12 games, nails the hal-chilena and celebrates with good humor.
*half-chilena
vince’s problem is quickly announcing they play and then stopping for dramtic effect when the play is over. delaying telling up the outcome
sure it’s for dramatic effect? isn’t he just tripped up on his own words?
not sure its a dramatic pause of just him being tripped on his own unnecessary words.
And I don’t mean to imply that is his only problem as a broadcaster.
I think he would be a great tv guy.
yes, when the picture is already painted and all he has to do is help you follow along.
did you hear vin scully’s call of the kemp walk off? I think it was very close to classic vin scully, but a little tired. he does seem to have lost a bit.
looking for it now…
his voice is slowing down, huh?
also, a liiiiittle early in the season to start picking an MVP, don’t you think, dodger fanbase? (kiddding!)
dear boston red sox, stop wondering why sweeney isn’t hitting as many home runs as his build seems to ensure. the reason is, because swingles. maybe swoubles.
apparantly they missed it when, during spring training, when bobby valentine said that swingles doesn’t know his body type yet
apparently i missed that. what a thing to say.

is that what that’s supposed to be? i’ve seen those ! ones and i always think of a misplaced cigarette or a very short flat cap.
Have no idea. Figured I’d give a try and see what it looked like.

I know the A’s are desperate for a competent third baseman. I’m not sure Inge qualifies anymore. His numbers last year were really terrible, although I suppose he is an upgrade with the glove.
At least he’s been decent in the not-so-distant past. Luke Hughes is hopeless.
Take a good long last look at Luke Hughes, guys. He’ll be off to the land of Langerhans and Thompson soon enough.
who was the blue jay that turned into sizemore?him too
purcey
When the alternatives are hitting 136 and 159 …
Can he field the ball? Seems like that might be the only real pre-rec for the A’s right now.
I just want a competent defensive third baseman. If Inge can do that, I can live with him.
I’m fine with that.
In 125 career AB in oakland. Ouch
I remember him getting some big hits off the A’s in the 06 ALCS so I’ve always been irritated when I see his face.
With those numbers in the Coliseum, Inge will fit right in.
I would rather just keep playing Sogard. Or Donaldson. Or bring up Rosales. Or Wes Timmons. But I’ll try not to get worked up, because none of the options are worth getting angry over.
I must say that Colon’s performance so far this season has been strikingly impressive.
I’ve hit rock bottom. I’m watching the Yankees/Tigers game when I could just as easily watch the A’s.
Look what you’ve made me do, Beane.
C’mon, Orioles. Stop making great defensive plays.
i’ve been waiting to see the new orioles hats in action. mlb replay just gave me that chance. as much as i love the idea of different-colored fronts, especially in their color combo, for some reason, and i think it’s the build of the hats themselves, it doesn’t seem to work. the white area looks really big and the bell (bell? whatever the term is…) of the hat seems bubbly. conclusion, until they rebuild the hat itself with a shorter hat, the orioles look like little leaguers.
panel hats are go
i like them in concept and am all for them. in current practice they look goofy and need refining. seems they lost some knowledge on how to make them look good, sometime between the trucker and the fitted eras. sorta like how when they gave a tribe a bunch of ginsu knifes to help them cut things better, but then the next generation didn’t learn hot to make their own knives and when the ginsus rusted they all starved. true factoid!
i said knifes. what an idiot.
you remember the 30 rock where salma hayek apologized for her phrasing because she hadn’t spoken english in 3 meses?
never really seen 30R. once, on a plane, the morning after no sleep, it wasn’t that episode.
its a good show
that sounds cool.
but yes, panel hats do need to be broght back to 70s glory
I kept wanting to get the White Sox panel hat back when I was living in Chicago. I always restrained myself, because they are the White Sox, but it is a nice looking hat IMO.
so is the tune on the cash creek casino radio spot supposed to NOT be groove is in the heart? it seems there’s one note different.
cache cache baby
don’t try to correct my subtle commentary!
a run!
Cespedes may not be a particularly good center fielder, and is painful to watch at times, but pitchers need to avoid throwing him fastballs on the inside of the plate.
I know RBIs are a misleading stat, but 19 seems like a lot for the A’s by the end of April.
I think it is telling as a percentage of the whole tyoe thing. Not that he is an RsBI guy, but wow look at that number
Even more than that, I saw a stat the other day that says for all hitters not #1 in the order, he’s led off an inning the most.
Yeah, because our 1-2-3 goes down 1-2-3 every time.
another run!
Another run!
Colon finally getting the runs.
hey-o!
so, live look ins have the worst programming ever, right? they more often than not show you low lev situations when other exciting situations are available, and they cut off before action is complete
even worse, i always miss them.
Would love to visit Camden Yards someday. Looks absolutely beautiful.
Definitely one of my favorites, and it’s great how it is worked into the neighborhood.
i need a torta. see you on the car radio.
I’m doing a little photo experiment with M&Ms. You’ll see later.
“what up my elf”
Most offensive commercial of the season?
yay deric!
PS vince needs to re read the hatteberg chapter of moneyball before he talks about patient hitter’s early in the count swings
sigh….
Well, shit. That wasn’t very fun.
Oh, well. I don’t know if the A’s can survive into extras, much less win the game, but I won’t be around for it. I have much The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, the Swedish version, or wife will have my head.
ewquodfasjkndwuiopfadsnkl;asdf
!
Fuck.
what a waste.
So why did they pull Colon again? He essentially made no bad pitches, and the two runners who got on could have easily been outs, particularly Jones.
Eh, definitely can’t fault Melvin there. If Colon stayed in, we’d all be saying “WHY DIDN’T THEY PULL HIM”.
clearly you don’t have the wisdom of [insert name of former catcher that is now a manager of a baseball team here]
but yes, that has always bugged me, when a pitcher is giving up groundball singles and suddenly he sucks. most famous example is pedro in the 2003 alcs, he gave up a couple of dinks and littleis supposed to pull him? why?
because vince jinxed him by calling him the dominican dandy.
That’s so wrong. Marichal should sue.
yeah, vince crossed a new nickname line. he went from plain bad to wrongfully given and badly attributed.
Glenn and Ray were each a little too liberal in referencing all the shutouts of his career. It is as they were asking for this to happen.
Well, that was hideous and demoralizing.
just when I was thinking this team has a chance of winning 80 games…
It was only a matter of time. Coming into today, the pitching had the second lowest ERA in the league but also the second lowest K rate. The offense has been historically bad but it’ll only regress to terrible, which probably won’t be enough to make up for the pending regression of the pitching.
The A’s now enter a tough stretch where they don’t play a team that finished under .500 last year until the last series in May. I, for one, enjoyed our run of semi-competence against really bad teams.
Not to mention a 6% HR/FB ratio. Accordingly, the FIP-xFIP differential is huge. Lots and lots of regression coming our way.
Yeah, you can’t help but think the pitching will regress and regress mightily. But we knew coming in that this is a pretty bad team with no chance to win, so my disappointment is tempered.
Being a real fan though, it’s hard not to dwell on losses like today that should be wins; even though the rational mind knows it doesn’t matter I still am bummed out.
Exactly this. As a baseball fan I love the pitcher’s duels that go down to the wire and every play of the game matters.
As an A’s fan I agree with Peter Golenbock
Watching the replay, Barton almost certainly should’ve made the play on Colon’s throw. Sogard’s throw was a little tougher, but if a large part of your value is going to come from defense, you have to make both those plays.
Completely agree.
I thought the reverse, but mostly because I thought he should have come off the bag for Colon’s to at worst keep it 1st & 2nd. Otherwise, agreed.
You just got an amen.
If anyone feels bad about today, may I suggest a quick browse through the Halos Heaven recap thread? Hilarious pictures, great gifs and even more suck than us for $120 million dollars and a mountain of expectations more!
Scioscia and company love misery.
SBN can suck my dick… the one with the numbers ticking down on it and the gem in it…
If you like animated GIFs and sports…then maybe you’d like this collection of GIFs for the NFL Draft 2012.
It helps if you have an idea of why people might react in such ways regarding the picks.
Fun with time-lapse photography, better than today’s loss:
Blue M&M, 15-second interval, about 7 minutes
Brown M&M, 10-second interval, about 6 minutes

I had to test out the mint julep recipe this afternoon to see if it still works. It does.
i want candy.
Me too. But all I ever get is savory.
i like savory best.
Me too. But sometimes I get to missing sweet somethin’ fierce.
that’s why you have me. ;P
Yum!
♥
Hi, sweetie!
I’d say something profound but I’m really really non-sober, so I’m gonna yel “TREE COOKIES” instead!
hi, i’m drunk, so i’ll yell back “HOLLOW TREE!” ♥
Is this a private game or can anyone play?
anyone can play! especially if they made homemade pickles. extra points for that!
homemade pickles are awesome. I assume I missed those at the FKup… I also missed your deconstructed muffuleta.
these were the one’s aarvark brought to fanfest.
I got so tired during the game. I lost my energy. There were so many more people to meet afterwards, but I just ended up half-asleep and walking in circles til gonealookin’ gave me a ride back to the hotel.
So, if anyone thinks I was standoffish or unfriendly after the game, that’s just’ cuz I was out of it…
Join us… Although I’m back and forth cooking for my wife…
soooooooooo hungry.
I wish I could beam you some flanksteak with stir-fried soybeans and rice. Nothing gourmet, but definitely yummy and filling.
A little late, but I’m feeling good, so how about “HOLLER TREE!”?
hahaha. LOVES IT!
I said, little, girl it’s plane to see.
You’re awesome!
I’m trying to be awesome too… at least as awesome as one can be while eating pork fried rice for breakfast at 8PM after about ten hoppy beers.
I drunkenly bought a guitar today… I’m pretty sure it only cost me a case of Sierra Nevada, and I’m pretty sure the dude I owe already drank the other half…
So I gotta pay 12 brewskys on the installment plan!
next time, you bring the guitar and play it. ♥
This particular one’s a busted up 1962 Teisco junker. It was the project guitar in a friend’s too-big collection, and he offered to sell it to me for a case of beer, and I couldn’t in good conscience decline, seeing as how I had just bought a case of beer.
thinking on what i could trade you for a case of beer…
:)
I have just been gifted my first guitar and I’m in the very early stages of leaning how to play it. My fingers hurt.
as they should!
Congratulations, though.
Thanks. It’s pretty slow going though.
I like candy when she is wrapped ina sweater
I know a guy who’s tough but sweet.
who who?
That was a damned gut-punch to watch.
How’s everyone doing tonight?
I’m happy and drunk, and I hope you’re increasingly prepared to kick ass onstage this week!
Of course I am! I even wrote a baseball joke. You coming out tomorrow?
San Leandro is far for a Sacramentan without a car.
If you ever play at The Comedy Spot in Sac, I’m in like skin.
D’oh. Forgot you were up in Sac. If I ever get good enough to get booked, hopefully it’s in Sacramento. If so, I’ll let you know. It’s just a little far to drive for a 3-5 minute open mic set.
no worries. I hope you do well and enjoy yourself and entertain the people.
Go A’s, too, of course!
You do stand up?
Ok so.
The 9th inning sucked. Whatever. We lost our game because not one, but TWO of the goals I scored were waved off on FKing bullshit offside calls — like, I normally don’t care and just turn back because whatever it’s just soccer on Sunday afternoon, but the damn linesman was 15 yards behind the play because he was lazy and negated a pair of fantastic plays by my team because we schooled the defense and it LOOKED like we got by them no problem. Asshole.
Now the good news. Not just one, but TWO potential gigantic gas guzzling (not really they’re diesel) trucks to offset DFA’s miniature nissan versa carbon footprint. WOO.
Thanks, and go As.
funny about the brown one with the grill on the bed, it’s like they staged the photos to bait you.
IK, R?
Thanks, and go As.
If this was Galt and it was still the mid 90’s, we’d go to that linesman’s house TONIGHT and steal ALL HIS FKin’ yard gnomes!
yea. I mean really, I don’t get pissed off at the refs because like I said, it’s friggin co-ed soccer on sundays — still, though, the dudes get paid for working the games so I expect them to at least be half competent.
Thanks, and go As.
Agreed.
its a yaris bitch!
close enough. still has less horsepower than my windshield wiper motors.
Thanks, and go As.
And yet Ive still gotten 3 speeding tickets in it and blew past a Lamborghini last week on 101.
I like #2 better.
based on looks, so do I. The brown doesn’t look all that great.
However, if the white one is not a diesel it’s instantly out of the running. All I know so far is that the CL ad says it’s “smog exempt” which basically means diesel… unless the guy doesnt know what he’s talking about.
Thanks, and go As.
what’s the smog-exempt horizon on gas cars, is it still 1968 or has it moved up?
1975
Currently 1975, but SB 1224 would change it to 1981.
Diesels prior to 1998 are exempt also.
Thanks, and go As.
i didn’t realize new diesels were smoggable.
What exactly are you looking for?
In short? 73-87 bodystyle crew cab chevy/GMC truck that I will shorten the frame of and make a regular 6’5 shortbed instead of the 8′ monster.
Best case scenario would be a single rear wheel, but if I have to get a dually and convert it that’s fine since I have to swap the bed anyway from the long to the short.
Diesel because, well, 18mpg instead of 8. As great as mashing around in a big block chevy truck with a 3 speed non-overdrive would be… I’d go broke paying for fuel.
Also a diesel can run on like grease or dirty water or hipster tears or something if there’s a zombie apocolypse, so I have that goin for me.
Basically this:
Thanks, and go As.
I feel like that truck should have hydraulics in it.
a truck like that needs a directory with a you-are-here dot in it, and maybe a food court too.
Don’t forget spinners and a racing stripe. I’m not a huge fan of the type of truck he’s been looking for, but I have to say, this might be my favorite of the one’s he’s shown.
i’m just saying it’s as big as a mall, not that it’s tacky or showy, by any means.
i like them all, but then again, i’m a fan of any car/truck made mostly out of metal. and i get to live vicariously through V’s truck hunt because i’ve always wanted a big f100 myself, always. but the gas mileage vs. i don’t have anything to actually haul make it prohibitive.
The mileage thing is why it’s gotta be diesel.
My little WRX gets 18mpg and requires premium fuel.
That gigantic diesel gets… 18mpg.
Thanks, and go As.
what happens if you use regular? also thats fucking terrible mpg for a car
yeah. the boxer engines are pretty fantastic in all aspects except for mileage.
if you use regular it pings and knocks. It’s a turbo motor.
Thanks, and go As.
engine. motors run on electricity. (take that motor city.)
This is why I went for the RAV4 V6 over the Subaru Forester with the turbo. So far I’m getting about 22 on the short hops through town and 28 on the highway including that trip down to Oakland, so pretty much as advertised.
also the forester can, for some reason, only tow like 1500 pounds.
really odd. The frame must be made out of flattened tuna cans.
Thanks, and go As.
For the car buyer/user I think you are, who hopes to stick with the car for 8+ years rather than trading in a lot, a non-turbo is wise. Those turbo engines run super-hot (by design), and thus can have a higher fail rate.
i think my ’76 300D gets ’bout 20mpg or better. can’t do the calc for sure because the odo is broken, but i made it from oakland to brookings oregon on a 20-gallon tank once.
lof lof lof
I tend to be partial to small pickups, but back when I was a kid, a friend’s family had a Ford f-250 single cab, must have been a 1985 or so. To this day its what of what I think of when I think of a farm/work truck.
So you have a fair bit of experience working on cars?
lil bit, yeah.
Not so much with diesels, but apparently those older ones are even more simple to work on than a basic small block chevy.
Thanks, and go As.
There are 2 old cars in my neighborhood that I’m falling in love with. One is a Volkswagen Type 2 Pickup truck and the other is a 1968(I think) Mustang Coupe. I wish I had some experience with car repair as both would need at least some serious body work.
I did all the bodywork on my 65 mustang when I was in high school.
My recommendation for doing bodywork is to take it somewhere, drop it off, pay them money, and pick it up done.
Thanks, and go As.
city!
that was a fun ending. had to stay away from the internets till i could watch it though.
WTF!?!?
how did this reply here?
Interesting location for this comment!
And the goal difference that looks like it will decide things is completely covered by the 6-1 shellacking at Old Trafford back in October.
i thought was at the bottom of the page when i posted it! have no idea what happened.
hopefully newcastle won’t put up a fuss…
If you had experience in car repair you would not be in love with a VW pickup truck.
Actually that’s the one that runs. Needs a lot of body work, but at least it runs. I don’t think the mustang even runs.
I had a 87 Mazda B2200 as my first car. My ex called it Bwrawie’s toy twuck because it was so tiny. Great little truck tho.
My first car was a 1980 Ford Fairmont. It probably weighed as much as your truck.
1991 Acura Integra. Once the most-stolen car in America!
1983 Suzuki GR-650-X street bike…
I’ve never owned a car.
1979 Toyota Corolla.
Saved up my own money and when I had $1000 mom told me that was what I was getting because it was dependable and good on gas. It was ugly and I hated it. But it was great on gas and it ran and ran. Eventually I sold it because it was breaking down. Turned out it was shoddy mechanic work. I sold it to my sister in law for like $500, she had a good mechanic work it up and it took her like 5 more years of running it into the ground before it finally gave out.
1967 ford mustang
6 cylinder, 3 speed manual. ended up totaling it when I spun out in the rain going around a turn, overcorrected, and spun completely the other direction across the street and hit a parked car.
still the only wreck i’ve ever been in.
Thanks, and go As.
1987 Volvo Wagon (with Turbo). Ended up totaling it when I hit Colin’s classmate on 101. Not my only wreck, but the other was when someone rear-ended me.
I love the look of that car.
It was the one my brother and sister shared at college (same year 1979).
Learned stick with it. very forgiving.
I learned stick on a 1987 Honda Accord. Super forgiving.
I learned stick on a 1978 Chevy Chevette, one of the crappiest cars ever made. Not super forgiving (unless you count the clutch plate being extra easy to grind into uselessness).
1980 Datsun 280zx
Thanks, and go As.
Same.
My parents had always had sticks, so while I “learned” it there, it didnt feel different because that was just how you drove a car.
True confession-the first time I ever got behind the wheel of a car I got in an accident. We had taken a friend’s keys and ran out to the empty parking lot we were in and everyone had started taking turns in his car (he was the guy in the group who always got picked on.) So it was finally my turn, I got in, and had NO idea how to drive it-WHERE THE HELL WAS THE SHIFTER NEXT TO THE SEAT LIKE MOM AND DAD HAVE?!? But being a stupid kid that was gonna stop me from trying to take a turn.
So I get in and tap the gas, everyone is telling me to back up but I don’t know what the hell to do. Next thing I know I’m in a 5mph sideswipe of the lightpost in the parking lot.
As far as the insurance company knows, some kids stole the car and did some joyriding. Looking back now i could have just as easily ran over someone at low speed. I think of this every time the eldest Ace asks me to take him to practice driving in the nearby parking lot..
Sounds like you should just in case he finds himself in the same situation.
My reaction too.
We now only have automatics so I think my actual response will be “if you get in a car and you see a stick between the front seats, get out and go to the passenger side because youa rent driving that”.
But I will have little to worry about there-the Eldest Ace is way more responsible and smrt than I was at his age. Hell he may be more responsible than I am right now. He would never steal a friends keys and take his car for even a 5 foot joyride.
my first car is one of my bank’s security questions. and my mom’s maiden name is phishingscam.
I got my first speeding ticket in a 90 acura legend

Today’s game sucked but at least we’re not Grizzlies fans..
please
I’m down. Who do we want back?
Trout. Oh, realistically? I don’t see us getting much more than Callaspo, who is sporting a line worthy of an A’s 3B, although he probably projects to be better than Donaldson, Hughes, or Inge.
Why would we want Callaspo? expensive not good win now move?
Kaleb Cowart or Jean Segura would be my targets.
Cause if you can trade a 34 year old reliever for a 29 year old 3B who makes less money and was 3.6 WAR last year, you should?
Thanks, and go As.
when you can get prospects?
Who says they’re offering anything like the prospects that you want?
I would take either one over Callaspo. if they aren’t offering cowart or segura then we aren’t getting shit from them either way and you hold him.
So basically all the people who dumped on the Balfour signing in the first place think that we should now get real prospects back in return for that contract?
Wasn’t the main reason it was dumped on that it cost us a second-round pick? That cost is sunk now. The acquiring team just gets a pretty good late inning reliever without committing much cash.
this.
contract is shorter now than it was last year.
the problem with the contract was A he wasn’t the closer last year and B it was too long and C it was in the contention cycle where it really didn’t matter if you gto good 8th inning relief. D there were better uses of the money.
A) So fking what?
B) Longer contracts entail more risk, but 2 years isn’t a big deal from that point of view
C) See A)
D) Like going all in on Carl Crawford?
Only if you think the 2nd round pick had a ton of value.
agreed
also callaspo will make more next year
And collapse. Oh.
Callaspo for Balfour?
Where do I sign?
Thanks, and go As.
why would you target him? we don’t want to win this year.
Not much point in that deal, that I can see. Callaspo would help us this season, but if we’re trading Balfour we’re punting this season, and I’d rather take my chances with Sizemore/Parker/Donaldson/Head going forward. At least they’ll be cheap.
We can still punt on 6th down?
We’re playing Aussie Rules.
holy shit thats awesome
Thanks, and go As.
I forget who hit the homer but I had to rewind and screengrab that last season.
And I’m pretty sure that’s Cramer at the right in the first one, so it must have been in the first month.
Muahahahahahahahaha. How did I miss this?
nice
A couple of guys I would target (assuming guys like Segura and Cowart aren’t available):
3B Luis Jimenez (Sickels B- grade)
RHP Ariel Pena (C+)
I also wouldn’t mind Trumbo. And I’m not entirely sure Segura or Cowart would be off the table. Aybar and Kendrick just signed extensions and the Angels have a logjam of prospects at those positions (3B as well).
I wouldn’t mind Garrett Richards.
Why would you make a trade of Balfour for a C+ spec? I mean look at what we got for Ziggy, Balfour has to be worth more.
The A’s wanted Cowgill for Ziggy but AZ didn’t bite. Cowgill was a C+ prospect at the time so Allen/Norberto was actually worth less than a C+.
Therefore, getting a B and a C for Balfour is just about what you could expect.
ehh. I think Balfour is significantly better than Ziggy.
Hey Oblique!
I saw the tail end of the Fremont Aces/SF game at big rec. The aces had great unis and apparently won the game. huzzah

i have seen the chaplin thing before
I hope to see many of you at Yon’s open mic in san leandro tonight! R and i are going to go early to catch the last part of the game. xoxoxo

Not after the 2008 season.
There is no …. number 11.
That was Chavez himself (since the search specified 2009 onwards).
I gave up on this when I thought of Jeff Baisley but it turned out he was Sept. 2008. I probably should have gotten

have long since faded from memory.
That’s nothing — we’re on pace for 24 different third basemen this season.
All your [shitty third-]base[men] are belong to us!
Don’t you mean goat? We kinda want the cabbage, no?
