Jarrod Parker’s MLB A’s, duh debut, vs. LHP Chris Sale
#Athletics vs. #WhiteSox: Weeks 2B, Sogard 3B, Reddick RF, Cespedes CF, Gomes LF, Suzuki C, Ka'aihue DH, Pennington SS, Barton 1B
— Jane Lee (@JaneMLB) April 25, 2012
Now this is probably the smartest move of the day:
Luke Hughes the latest to catch the clubhouse bug. He came in today with a 102-degree fever.
— Jane Lee (@JaneMLB) April 25, 2012
how much WPA does Hughes get today for being sick?
Just give him all of Sogard’s WPA.
Yes… the clubhouse “bug” of suck.
Man I wish I didn’t have such a time sucking morning.
I would love to join my 1000 friends a the game today.
CSN-CA eschews this game in favor of:
12:30p – 1:00p: Brazilian Butt Leandro combines Brazilian dance and cardio to help get you from saggy to sexy.
Be honest. You’d much rather watch that than an A’s game.
The “after” shots on the split-screen, sure. The “before” shots, not so much.
finally a day game
so, explain to me sogard 2 and Barton 9?
Pay no attention to the man with the reverse splitz.
Parker sets the gold standard.
that, or the equipment mgr finally remembered what drawer these tops were in.
I like him already.
totally vet move by kurt to let the ball get by him
“That’s why he’s the best in the business.” -Fosse, probably
who could know, since I am currently learning how to lift and tone my but-tocks.
[Checks Ed out]
Not Brazilian enough.
i just want to say that from a phone, the sig line reads as part of the comment. especially yours.
its not a sig line. I type it out every time.
penny looked surprised for a sec.
Can’t wait for the jarrod parker/colby Lewis 10-inning pitchers duel. “parker, Lewis can’t lose.”
you will be here all week?
Indeedy
Vince, how about this:
“Vida Blue and Guillermo Moscoso were both A’s pitchers.”
See? I can put Vida Blue in a sentence with most anyone.
“Vida Blue met Ed at a bar a few years ago.”
“Vida Blue was and A’s pitcher in contrast to Thomas Crapper who invented the modern toilet.”
“Bill King and Vince Cotroneo have both called A’s games alongside Ken Korach.”
So, Jemile teaching sliding now?
that’s sorta what i yelled out!
I thought we had comcast ca at work so i was kinda excited I may be able to watch a couple of innings.
Nope. Just buttock and abs
Day games at home during the week are never shown.
is fosse just taking the day off then?
Is this a trick question?
Watching paint dry would draw a better afternoon audience than an A’s game.
My office hallway walls are being painted, and I did indeed watch them dry in lieu of watching the game.
Riveting, ain’t it?
Pretty dry, huh?
It’s hallway walls, not a bridge.
i’m not sure ooh-aahing lazy flies is as stadium specific as we’d like to think.
I think our fans are ooh-aahing halfway decent contact of any form.
It seems like the dominant reliever -> starter conversions have been mostly successful recently. Might be something the A’s should see if they could exploit.
Who’s our dominant reliever, again?
Thanks, and go As.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!
Cook and Norberto could be fringe candidates.
DLS, Cook, and Norberto all fit the description of previous starters turned relievers with great stuff. But they probably have to show they can be dominant relievers first.
Cook and Norberto would fit with the concept of exploiting the phenomenon, since they were both acquired on the cheap or as secondary/tertiary pieces because they are “just relievers.”
DLS was a starter and then converted when he blew up his arm, right?
Thanks, and go As.
yes also because of option problems
Yeah, needed to accelerate his development.
I love it when vince tells us that its a “not a bad idea for cliff to be aggressive early in the count”
I love when Vince tells us “Suzuki goes out to talk to Parker. Probably telling him there’s nothing to be afraid of with Fukadome at the plate.” Next pitch? Run scoring double.
That was particularly funny.
You all have probably talked about this already, but I am seeing the new “scout” feature in gameday for the first time.
Genius…
I hope nobody’s getting paid for info like that.
#toonces
Pretty sure it’s an automatic widget that mines information for SSS “anomalies”
#toonces
heh.
Hard to think of something dumber than infield in for Adam Dunn.
Forming a political party on premise that there is no intellectual property while working in a company that makes apps for Apple?
You win
Heh.
#toonces
guy in front of me to barton, get a hit or “we’re” sending you back to AAA.
he’s not a member of the club.
Hooray for runs!
People like that really annoy me.
Schlong!
woooooo!
more wooooo!
Damn, Weeks is fast.
I’m glad I was able to tune in this inning!
I’m listening to the radio for the first time this year. Just dropped the $15 for the MLB At Bat app on my phone and I plugged it into a pair of speakers. Figured that and the rest of the info in the app is going to be better than $20 for Gameday Audio on the computer.
Weeks! Reddick! Cespedes! Woo!
Can someone who is watching the game say something about the strike zone? On gameday, it looks like Parker is getting squeezed.
A little
Bah. Bah bah bah.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUK….
Welcome to the Fukudome.
Ugh, fucking Pennington…
cespedes had that. leaping grab with extra boost at the end. everybody surprised. ball is his and oughta stay that way. but he touches wall and drops ball. ???
unclear from the call, Johnny Darko just said “hit the tip of his glove.”
It was amazing that he even got to the ball, but once he got there he probably should’ve caught it. It wasn’t an easy play but someone like Coco probably would’ve caught it. Wall didn’t factor in.
I just saw the replay, I agree that the wall didn’t factor in the drop, but I think the wall did factor in the mini leap. I think he leaped unnecessarily anticipating contact with the wall. Regardless, he should have caught it.
And yeah, fking pennington. turn and throw and there is an out at the plate.
Yeah gp
He did something similar in the first inning on Sunday, jumping too early when he felt the wall coming. His instincts going back don’t appear to be very good.
Just needs to get a better feel for the Coli. Hopefully.
He was playing a game I like to call “just the tip”
I had 6 IP, 5 K for Parker in FAIL. Bob should have managed based on that.
LOL. How many outs are the White Sox going to run into in this series?
I liked gameday: With Brent Morel batting, Kosuke Fukudome caught stealing home.
The sulk-off was the best Gameday call.
Ghost of Ozzie
exsqueeze me!
Squeezefail
bayern.
heimspielfinale
aren’t you on munich? are you going?
*in munich.
Stuttgart and nope
porsche, not bmw. got it.
Hahahahaha Johnny Doskow just said “The Rivercats bullpen will try to hold onto this one for the A’s…”
He’s still too used to being in Sacramento, heh.
it was a glorious Freudian slip
Announcer trolling FTW
#Toonces
Michael Pineda out for the year with a shoulder tear. Tough luck, Yankees.
ouch
Yeah, that really sucks for them. But, then again, it’s the Yankees, so I don’t feel too much sympathy.
wow, nice trade Mariners.
This is why you don’t trade a pitcher for a hitter
wow, the a’s caught a huge break here. no way was he bunting
I gotta say, Hawk’s utter disbelief at what’s been transpiring for “the good guys” today is quite satisfying.
Ok that, not so much.
You can put it on the board.
OK, that call was ridiculous even by Hawk standards.
I noticed this while gamecast surfing during the game and thought I’d mention it:
In the Arizona vs. Philly game Cahill was relieved by Breslow in the 6th. The two combined to give up 5 runs in the inning.
At the exact same time, Parker was relieved by Cook in the 7th. Cook limited the damage and they left the inning with a 2-1 lead. Cook went on to hold through a rocky 8th.
A minor Moneyball victory.
heh, and Ziggy relieved Breslow
{{{facepalm Balfour}}}
don’t be oi’ing WHEN he’s pitching!
Urgh.
Thank goodness for Konerko. I thought I’d have to work this afternoon.
STFU
Finish this, Cespedes.
Fought back from 0-2. Impressive.
ball lawyer.
splain please. balk on the cespedes steal?
yes balk
Reed threw to second without throwing to first. Easy call.
thanks.
And we’re FUUUU’d
Ugh, better throw would’ve gotten him.
Try to bunt again please.
Ventura is dying to give us this game.
HAH! What a play!
Doolittle -> Midland
About time too. He had a 18 K/9 1.7 BB/9 in Stockton.
HE IS REPEATING LEVELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
asvd
vince makes up the ABSOLUTE WORST nicknames in the history of the multi-verse. that is all. (for now)
He was selling “The Cuban Cannon” but I ain’t buying.
same. and, if memory serves me right, he created my most hated “boom boom bailey.” GRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what is this calling keebs “harry potter????” NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOLLOW TREE! HOLLOW TREE! THAT IS WHERE THE TRUE MAGICK HAPPENS.
Last night he was calling Milone “The Iceman.” Horrible.
i heard that too and it made me ill.
the iceman illeth.
Do we want Vince knowing our secret names, though?
no, but i think he should refrain from making up STOOPID NAMEZ. ;)
Freekraut.tv!
wooooooo! :D
I’d kinda like Vince to refrain from talking during A’s broadcasts.
I can take him for 3 innings with Ken working the other 6. Vince’s move to the lead chair has been hard to take. I’ll plan on listening to the Baltimore, Boston and Tampa Bay guys on the upcoming road trip, or possibly music instead of baseball narration.
A signal hijacking is in order.
I like the cut of your jib, ma’am.
♥
your mizzen topgallant staysail ain’t half bad either.
oh yeah! ;)
I only heard last night about his alternate nickname of “Trotsky,” which I love.
Yeah, I love this one as well.
Mocking well is the best revenge!
yeah, but his calluses are all on the wrong hand
Someone on scout.com has the username “ImCespyAndIKnowIt”
So awesome.
Thanks, and go As.
Too Cespy for this Team
Getting Cespy with it?
Wow, that’s just…..unbelievable that Kurt wasn’t on second after that.
wha’ happened?
Popup to short center field. Kurt jogged to first in disgust. Turns out De Aza was playing extremely deep so he couldn’t catch it. He dove and ended up rolling around on the ball a bit. Anyone could’ve made it to second by then; it’s especially egregious considering that Kurt would’ve been in scoring position as the winning run.
Last night at one point I thought the game might go on forever. Todya it appears it actually is.
you just wanted to hang out with me longer
Yes… yes he did.
Seriously, WTF is up with the White Sox today.
Oh man, these Sox are dumber than a sack of hammers.
mlb is updating too slow on my phone. what’s happening?
Lillibridge got picked off second by Suzuki with nobody out. And now Beckham just got hosed at the plate.
Recall the Juan Pierre game last year?
Behold the power of KEEBS!
Hawk is about to have an aneurysm.
HELL YES!
I forgot how ridiculous he is. All this “we” stuff, and his obvious disappointment when something bad happens to “our guys” — not even Fosse is this bad. Hawk is basically an overzealous fan who, for some reason, is allowed to be a “professional” announcer.
Wow at that whole inning.
emphatically, vince. the word you can’t possibly find is emphatically.
Hey, there’s still baseball.
So many innings. Not enough sunflower seeds.
I’m hopeful. Blevins can’t possibly be as bad as he was the last inning.
If trainman were really running the team, at least we wouldn’t have Blevins.
heh
But Miller can be. FK.
We’re going to set a record for E5’s.
Who was that shortstop (or was it third base) in the late 90s with a brick for a glove?
You might be thinking of Kurt Abbott, whose horridness forced them to rush a very raw Miguel Tejada up from AA.
That’s the one.
He made four errors on my birthday in 1997 Fuck that dude with a cactus.
He was a Marlin then. Who cares?
Whatever 1998
I found the one in May where he made 3.
It was this game
Yeah, that one. BB-Ref had 3 for him.
I was 11 I get to remember it how I damn well feel like it.
DFA IS FKING WRONG ABOUT SOMETHING!
yes, by relying on his eyeballs and memory! how poignant is that?
Haha
Well atleast I still got being ironic down!
I was at the game in NY where Knoblauch lost his edge. I think that was 4 errors (in like 4 innings, after which he just walked off the field)
Give him a break, dude only had one arm.
So wait. The A’s have played a game and a half. And still don’t have double digit hits. Awesome.
I get the sense that Jane Lee is ready for this game to be over.

https://twitter.com/#!/JaneMLB/status/195289085580017667
Gotta love cranky sports reporting tweets.
dammit. glad i’m back at my desk for this.
i take this back.
Well I guess that settles it. It’s better to be stupid than bad.
Who the shit is Jim Miller?
The reverse Langerhans?
Someone with a -.439 WPA for this game.
So he’s twice as good – or half as bad – as Hector Santiago (-0.920)
ha! he’s the pitcher who earned the W this game for his .1 innings of service.
I guess he knew that the only thing that was going to galvanize the A’s offense was to give up runs and put them in a hole. That Miller sure is some strategist.
And they got rid of Thompson for this?
Good lord.
Time for a 3-run walk-off from sexyfeet.
Now it’ll have to be two-run return to stasis. Then they can play another 5 or 6….
And still be under 10 hits!
thank you for calling it.
Also, buy AAPL. Ten years ago.
Nice call!!
That’ll do :-)
Give me equilibrium or give me equilibrium
C’mon CrimRod!
As of this very moment the A’s have 4 runs and 14 hits in 30 innings against the White Sox.
Yay Reddick!
HOLY FUCKING CESPEDES
I love this guy.
HOLY FK
SEXPEDES!!!!!!!!!!
BOOM!
FK YEAH SEXPEDES
Yay Smith!
(ahem)
KURT KIYOSHI SUZUKI, YOU GET YOURSELF A HIT, YOUNG MAN. RIGHT. NOW.
THANKS TO ALL CAPS YELLING, HE HEARD YOU.
Bottom line!
BOTTOM LINE! ;)
Remember to only use your power for good.
Because the sherifs only had tear gas and real guns?
I just got home, was surprised the game was still on, and tuned in to the A’s down 4-2. Despair creeping into my heart…then cespedes ties the game! I love baseball!
…and then Cespedes turns over.
Yay Suzuki!
Win now please!
Yes sir!
(and later).
Why is the “Watch Live” on Gameday the bottom of the 2nd in the Mets/Marlins game right now?
because major league baseball hates you. it is listed on their website
link
Good thing I have an extra ‘c’ in my user name then!
dammit.
You were just being hipster-y. Concupiscene is like PopScene, with even more lustiness.
hard to be more lusty than Popscene… Lets be honest… I would know.
Well, Concupiscence is indisputably more lusty than Pop.
True, but is ‘concupi’?
So that update on the innings/runs/hits going into the B-14th was pretty well-timed.
Hooray Win!!
Excellent.
ceeeeeeee-leh-brate good times, come on. (wooo! hooo!)
A’s wiiiiinnnn!
Jim Miller just knows how to win.
That was a great 15 minutes of baseball.
And an awful 3 hours and 45 minutes of it.
My timing is impeccable.
Maybe we can break the White Sox like we apparently broke the Royals
We broke Hawk, that’s for sure.
I think he’s going from smug and satisfied to suicidal and shitfaced.
Definitely worth $2, and I hope whoever grabbed the pair of tickets that was sitting on the giveaway table for quite a while on Saturday had a great time!
It might have been the sslingers. I know they were planning on going.
hooray for c & p!
Those were one of my contributions. Happy to hear that they brought someone joy, maybe.
i think i saw the ss’s on kiss cam…?
Yes, that was us. We were in our regular seats, hope someone else enjoyed the giveaways.
And now that I read down I see it was you – egggzzzzellent.
yes! i enjoyed a very nice day at the ballpark. TYVM
i did! (and i gave the other ticket away on the way in.)
you be awesome, AV.
â¤
well, that was freaking awesome. another boon: it got me through 89 pages of editing, WOOT!
Hooray!
Jim Miller: 1-0 0.00 ERA 27 K/9.
Pretty sure that he’s true talent level.
Holy crap! I tune into gameday for a second and see the A’s trailing by 2 in the 14th, and I tune out, only to check back for the post mortem and vicariously absorb all the awesomeness. Hooray!
I surreptitiously checked my phone during my 4-5pm meeting and was disheartened by the 4-2 score. I didn’t bother to check again until 5:15, and did a double take.
It was pretty awesome, well worth staying for the entirety. A’s made some really incredible defensive plays to go along with some atrocious botches of more routine outs. Looked pathetic at the plate for long stretches only to come alive at the end. A microcosm of the team and season, wrapped up in 14 very untidy innings. Celebration, well earned.
it’s a shame week’s flip from the ground to penny, who relayed the throw to barton, didn’t end up in an out. that play should have given results as spiffy as the process. too bad penny pulled barton off the bag.
Yeah, that would have been sweet.
That was AWESOME!!!!!
WOOT WOOT! and G got home just in time to hear the end with me! now it is the cocktail hour!
Did you feel the energy wave right before the dinger?
I don’t care if the A’s are good or not this year, a day is so much better when the A’s win. And it feels nice to be back at .500. I know it’s a ridiculous thought, but let’s surprise people this year.
And no I don’t want to look at the A’s hitting lines.
This pretty much sums it up for me!
its a nice year for me. I don’t expect any wins, yet I still root for them. I don’t care if they lose.
As far as I am concerned, they can’t fall off the floor, so any moment of joy is a surprise.
Oh, I’ve done it.
Me too. Fucking stairs.
oh come on. you can’t blame matt for everything.
I blame a matt for everything. And it’s generally is fault. The bastard.
The Matts in my life are sweet and kind and smart and down for wiffleball if uninjured.
#carson #watson
So, first 13 innings for the A’s? 7 hits. In the 14th? 5 straight for the win. That’s baseball for you.
OK, I just watched the replay of the out at the plate in the top of the 13th. That was a hell of a play by Pennington to chase the ball that far and get it to the cutoff man so quickly.
And Sogard made a nice pick and throw too.
Yeah, good play all around. Beckham looked like he couldn’t believe the ball got there when it did.
i want to see!!!!!
http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=20916871&c_id=oak&partnerId=aw-5107284977910370949-1039
thank you! most appreciated. ♥
I like how there are 3 people in the Fking diamond level seats.
Thanks, and go As.
He probably hits HR on inside pitches too, but man — if you are a pitcher, you do not want to let Sexpedes extend his arms!
I like how the pitcher is looking around trying to find the nearest place to hide.
Complete with a total clank by the fan.
The fact that there was actually a fan in position to make the catch is fairly amazing.
The Cespedes seats may become dynamically priced, if this goes on.
Source: FanGraphs
yum.
Spoilers, technically, if you haven’t made it very far into Game of Thrones:
Game of Presidents
And that was meant for the grill. Close enough.
It was only sort-of funny to me… until I got to “always going on about climate change”, which is hilarious!
