They could make a movie about the Peyton Manning/Ryan Leaf story. The hero and the goat. Leaf back in jail, Manning back in the game.

    But seriously, folks....

I know most people aren’t sports fans but I wonder if they know how much they’re missing out on? The feeling I have right now about my Jayhawks is joy and I’d hate to miss out on that.

Also, they probably aren’t burning couches and getting pepper sprayed in Lawrence tonight.

Some folks play for a lot of money but we don’t. We have side bets and I give strokes since I’m the better player but I still got them in the end. 9 & 18 are beer holes too. Loser buys.

Mini golf is a stressful game. I probably have bets going about half the time I play. I imagine that’s about average for golf junkies like myself.

Hammerhead was a loud, violent power trio… Lyrics were either about historical atrocities or future dehumanization of man and integration with computer systems…

They’re still around pretty much, but they’re called “Vaz” now.

Chokebore was proto-emo with mathy tendencies… like Polvo or June Of ’44, but I like Chokebore a lot better.

1 time each for me. i went to JL just because someone told me to, i’d never heard of them, and i was blown away. SY was inside the brooklyn bridge anchorage, this huge tall space with stone walls making crazy echoes. would have been perfect if it wasn’t for the typical new york crowd’s talking through the whole show, which also echoed off the walls.

it was actually that they were so un-cool. it was a hot ticket, so everybody wanted it, even people who had no interest in the band. so instead of a bunch of ubercool post-grunge protohipsters (which would have been fine with me), it was low level financial managers trying to impress girls who’d rather be home watching friends. of course they were bored and had to chatter. and if that particular 1000 people didn’t show, there were 1,000,000 more just like them waiting to take their place. THAT’S the typical NYC crowd. works wonders when you’re running, say, a baseball team, or a crappy chinese takeout restaurant. but when you just want to enjoy the crap out of some feedback while out of your mind on 2CB… annoying!

I saw the Jesus Lizard and Sonic Youth for the first time at Lollapalooza ’95 (Pavement, Cypress Hill, and Beck kicked ass too)

the best part was that during their main stage set, they announced to the crowd “Come back and see us on the second stage when… (disgustedly) Hole (more disgust) is up here…”

There were about 40 people watching them on the second stage, and this knob who was in my band kept yelling “PLAY MONKEY TRICK!”

So, before every song, David Yow would mumble… “This next song’s called Monkey Trick,” and they never did play Monkey Trick during that set. That was badass.

holy. smokes. i just ran into someone i haven’t seen since santa cruz ’94, when his mom, whom i’d called to have her come by from walnut creek, picked him up and drove off. this was about a week after a 9-person house meeting, with him absent, in which we’d decided that i had to call his mom. which was about week 3 of his sublet in the room of a guy who went to europe for a month, a room he’d vacated of all furnishings or any items other than the bed, filled the middle of the room with wheelbarrowfuls of dirt in a big mound, and proceeded to tell us that about 6 weeks ago (just before he had randomly found me at a coffee shop — yes, he went to santa cruz looking for me, we’d been friends in college and he’d heard i was in SC — to ask if he could crash with me) he had decided (his word, decided) that no, he wasn’t crazy, and that lithium wasn’t for him.

Wow, that’s incredible. I don’t think I would have been able to exercise that kind of patience. At least he had someone to pick him up.

My last roommate used to leave shoes in the freezer. But I had to draw the line when she “forgot about” a ton of broken glass that she had left sitting on the kitchen floor, after I had been away for a week.

And she eventually stopped paying rent on time, so that was kind of a problem, too.

            • AV Apr 2,2012 10:58 am || Up

those were different times and patience was easier. if you called someone and they weren’t there, you might have had to wait a whole 8-12 hours before they got near their message. then they’d call you back and you might not get that right away either. then we went to the library and checked out books. that took like an hour at least.

I lived in a 10-unrelated-strangers (no students, oddly) house in Palo Alto until about five months before the arrival of Poppy Jr. Within a week or so of my moving in, the guy in the room next to mine told me very matter-of-factly that he was bipolar and that I should let him know if I ever found that he was acting “off,” because that would mean his meds should be adjusted. Then he gave me his brother’s business card and said, “If you’re really worried and I’m not taking you seriously about it, call him.” I got that he had had medication issues before and he was trying to be proactive about letting his housemates who see him regularly know about it… but it was a really unnerving way to be welcomed to the neighborhood. As it turns out, he was always a little “off,” but in a consistent, benign and very appealing way, and he became one of my best friends.

      Story:

Jimenez recently told The Denver Post that he was upset he didn’t receive a contract extension while Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez got new deals. Jimenez was traded by Colorado to the Indians last summer.

Tulowitzki was quoted in the same story as basically saying Jimenez needs to get over his frustration and get on with his career.

If that’s the full backstory, that’s pretty awful of Jimenez.

The biggest difference to me between FK and AN is the lack of drama here. There isn’t a set of rules here and what that seems to provide is a free exchange of ideas where people speak their mind and even when folks disagree they aren’t disagreeable about it.

On AN there were so many rules about what you could and couldn’t say and it just seemed to make people cranky. Add the fact that you could pretty much be banned at the drop of a hat and it made it a place where you couldn’t feel all that comfortable speaking your mind.

I’ll admit I missed AN for a bit and I still miss some of the people who didn’t come over here but boy I don’t miss the vibe of that site at all.

Here I feel comfortable being myself and I think it’s because on Free Kraut you’re free to be whoever you want to be.

And it is a good point about working it out. I had thought when this all kicked off that, at some point, someone would get in a knockdown drag out and leave. In the OC there were always the posts by those who were saying this is it for them.

But even in the biggest, most heated discussions over here I can’t think of anyone who has claimed they are going to leave, or has left for that reason. Sure there are some people who came, saw it wasn’t their glass of Vodka, and left, but everyone knows all’s fair and acts accordingly.

I enjoyed him quite a bit. I grew really quite fond of him, though he may not have really thought of me as much more than a lab rat polar bear.

Following all the drama on AN during the off-season (read: rubbernecking at the train wreck over there) was a great procrastination outlet. But that’s only because I was up to my eyeballs in work at that point and had no baseball to follow.

It probably figures that the opposite is true for me now. But anyway, for what it’s worth coming from a random noob, I’m glad FK is around. You all seem pretty swell.

I hate this day. It has been so fucked up, I don’t know where to begin. We weren’t supposed to have clinicals tomorrow, but my teacher tells us last minute today that we actually do. So the homework I worked on all weekend isn’t due for two weeks. The time I spent on that from this weekend at work could have been spent studying for the test I failed today. Blah.

So I get to the hospital today and there is ZERO patient information in the chart. I didn’t even get her first name. I had labs. We introduce ourselves the day before when we are gathering information, so I went in and said hi. I said, “I’m Jennifer, I’ll be taking care of you tomorrow and Wednesday.” She rolled her eyes. Fucking bitch. So the instructor just calls me and tells me the hospital called her and the patient refused to have me as her nurse tomorrow.

    FK this day.

    • FreeSeatUpgrade Apr 2,2012 6:55 pm || Up

That’s really weak. Sorry Jennifer. The whole point of clinicals is to put students in a position to learn, which requires preparation. Horrible position for your instructor to put you in.

Of course, as I’m sure you’ve heard, “nurses eat their young,” so maybe your instructor was trying to deliver some tough love. More likely she/he’s just an asshole, though.

Nurse U got 86’d by patients on her clinical rotations a couple of times too. Some patients are just gonna be like that.
