The whole length of the contract, it’s been one thing after another. It’s been a disaster.
you better hope to God you don't show up in this little community, because you'll wish you had never come31 thoughts on “Slusser: Chavez {thisclose} to being done. Full stop.”

I have no words. I am literally near tears.
This is not fair.
sad panda.
You gotta feel bad for the guy on a personal level. So where does a new guy come from? Is there any 3B player in upcoming draft who is at a near-majors level? The farm? A trade? What do you guys think ?
Then again, who does?
Isn’t that a picture of ellis ( well an origami unicorn) but how does that tie in to Chavez?
the unicorn thing is more of a catch-all symbol of hope…doomed false hope.
Ahhhh…now I get it.
Wake up — time to die.
Ani-gif credit goes to xbx
Careful. xbx will probably sue you for that.

Man — alla you guys (with the exception of FSU) are a bunch of **-style sanctimony-drippers. He’s been demonstrably done for at least 2 years.
And this is holding up better than Chavez has.
Hey monkey…fuck off, huh? He’s my favorite goddam player.
I haven’t see you evincing much sympathy for my old fave Zito.
never liked him.
That said, yes, it does suck, and I hope for Chavvy’s sake that he takes the smartest and safest route for his health in the near future.
I admire Chavez’s devotion to unwaveringly honest self-assessment. This is a rare thing, especially among professional athletes. But I think the quote reproduced by monkeyball veers into self-flagellation. He was still very good in ’05 and ’06, certainly nothing close to a “disaster”.
This development is about as unsurprising as can be, and looked at from a certain perspective probably constitutes a healthy catharsis for the organization, but it’s still depressing to see the career of a great player prematurely curtailed. And damn, Chavez was a great player.
Yep. But for injuries he would have been in double digit gold gloves and, maybe, in a position to challenge Brooks.
1. This really does suck.
2. If his back condition is really this dire, why on earth is he trying to rehab “in the hopes of rejoining the A’s on their next homestand.” Do they mean that he would join the team to continue rehabbing or to play? Because if they mean he might play, aren’t they pushing things a bit? With this new news, might that just be rushing him back to lose him forever?
3. This makes me sad.
I think he needs to be done. Don’t mess with a back. :(
Sad, sad day.
Anatomy class:
L4 is one vertebra.
L5 is a different vertebra, directly below L4.
L3 is yet another vertebra, directly above L4.
L3, L4, and L5 are three vertebrae.
There is no such vertebra as “L4-L5.” Ditto “L3-L4.”
So I’m guessing the DISK that is herniated/displaced is the one between L3 and L4, and that Chavy might have to have L3 and L4 fused to each other. Also that the previous surgery was on either the disk between L4 and L5, or the disk between L3 and L4 — the article has it both ways.
And I’m annoyed that I don’t just get the “luxury” of feeling horrible for Chavy (and I really really do) without being distracted by the poorly conveyed medical stuff.
I’m appreciative of your annoyance as I had no clue.
You can, of course, collectively refer to consecutive vertebrae as “L3-L4” or “L3-4” or “L2-5” or “T10-L1” or whatever to encompass all the vertebrae you’re talking about. And you should refer to the disk between L3 and L4 as the “L3-L4 disk.” But disks don’t get fused — vertebrae do, after a damaged disk is completely removed from between them (that’s not what Chavez had done before).
If two vertebrae are fused, don’t they become one? I know that’s not what is being said here, but in general couldn’t you describe the result of fusing L4 and L5 (say) as an L4-L5 vertebra.
Yes, I think they do refer to fused vertebrae that way, but (I think) only if it’s known or specified that they’ve been fused.
If you have fused vertebrae, do you get shorter?
And yes, my friends call me Corky. Thanks for asking.
As for me, I’m just intrigued that vertebrae are apparently much like highways in California.
