But the Nats have Davey Johnson and Gio, and the A’s have Braden and Gomes and Timmons and McCarthy. I root for those guys.

My years living in the DC area predated the return of baseball, but based on how odious the fans of the Washington football team were, I can only assume that their baseball games are similarly attended by droves of dickheads.

Wow. He kicks ass throwing 88-90. If he can throw 92 with any regularity, with his change, he’s going to be positively filthy this season.

The second wild card most likely or logically be won by someone with 88+ wins.
I’m not stepping out on a limb and saying the A’s will be good or anything, but there’s the possibility that they might not be bad enough to be sellers at the trade deadline. I wonder what’s going to go through the heads of the front office if the A’s are only 6-8 back in late July AND (emphasis on AND) Texas and Anaheim are both bit by the injury bug.

Both steals were on McCarthy, he is paying no attention to baserunners. Got roughed up a bit, but I still like how he’s throwing. Cowgirl was a disaster on that double, though the screamer right at you is always hard as an outfielder.
Maybe he’s not gonna start working on holding baserunners ’til later in the spring…?…

Hell… I just want him to get at least one plate appearance in the Japan series.
If he can hold the corner down and OPS over .650 for a couple months until someone steps up or a trade is made, even better.

Yay for spring training reports! I’m passing on the trip this year after having gone the last two seasons so I hope a few of you can give us more live FKing from Arpaioburg.
I’ve done that before behind the plate in Sacramento. It’s fun to chat with those cats if their lips aren’t completely tight.

That was my thought, too. I am also uncertain as to why all scouts are required to wear a golf shirt, a baseball cap or visor from a golf company, and khaki pants. The two in front of me were fairly friendly with each other, but the others were pretty tight-lipped.
I’m also amazed at how low tech they are. You’d think an iPad would be a pretty awesome scouting tool–you could take video, tick off the boxes on their weird sheets faster, look up stuff online, file reports faster, etc. Every last one of them was scratching away notes on forms that look like they predate the mimeograph, except for one guy that was looking up a few things on an iPhone while filling out his ancient forms. Can’t say I was very impressed.
A lot of scouts calibrate their guns slightly off so that if someone looks over their shoulder, the reading is inaccurate.

Hohokam STADIUM… I learned a few years ago that if you tell a Garmin GPS to get you to Hohokam PARK, you will not go to Mesa, you will go to a Walmart in Coolidge.
There's a wild thing in the woolshed and it's keeping me awake at night.
Caught the second game of Cal’s doubleheader, along with Andeux. Only one definitive thing gleaned from the proceedings: Lehigh has a bad baseball team.
1. I sat near a bunch of pro scouts for part of the first game. Overheard the one in an A’s hat say (about what player, I don’t know) “well I don’t want to take anything away from the game he had last night, but even with all those knocks he only had four ribbies.”
2. Cal’s best player in their second baseman, Tony Renda. Gets on base, undersized but can really drive the ball, made some really nice plays defensively. And wears #14.
3. Lots of really bad breaks on fly balls by the outfielders, especially Lehigh’s.
4. I may have to retract my recommendation of Cal baseball to monkeyball. The diamond faces south and west, so there are really no seats at all in the shade. It was tolerable for me today, but a sun-hater would not have been happy.
There aren’t any seats in the shade at Stanford either, although by the end of a game there’s filtered sun in thr right field grass seats.
However, there was plenty of shade (if you brought your own chair, which I did) at Mosswood Park for the Oakland Colonels vs the Berkeley Monarchs of the Bay Area Vintage Base Ball League. I think the final score was something like Oakland 6, Berkeley 1, but I had moved over to the picnic area by then.

Members of the grounds crew staff actually borrowed lemonade from fans and spilled it in the back of their utility cart in the hopes of luring the bees away from players and fans. Another groundskeeper ventured up the concourse and came back with handfuls of cotton candy to add to the sticky bait mixture.

My friend is part of an improv/sketch comedy troupe up here. They teach classes and the students get to do a show or two as part of the class. The best of the students usually get invited to join the troupe.
I would think that you could find a few groups like that in your neck of the woods. They’re really great for honing your quick wit and having peers to practice with and bounce your material off of.

Blur- “Parklife”
Gorillaz f/ De La Soul- “Feel Good Inc.”
OutKast- “The Whole World” (actually a nice little rare karaoke find, so maybe I shouldn’t complain so hard)
Lana Del Rey- “Video Games” (nice and low…. good song for a tranny)
No Joy Division, no Wire, 2 Clash songs (guess which ones… barf!), 2 Squeeze songs (not even “Cool For Cats!”), and very few recent songs (no Dom, no Cults, no Foster The People, no Das Racist)

DO the nationals know their games use to be broadcast in French?
Actually, I think Gio’s gonna be the #1 Cy Young contender vs. Halladay this year.
Whoa.
take it with a grain of salt or six, like all my predictions.
I don’t like the Nationals. Their uniforms are ugly, and I wish they were still the Expos.
I agree on both points. I also don’t like the name they chose. SHould have gone with the grays
Agree on all three points but I love their players — Strasburg, Harper, Zimmerman, Gio, Henry. They’re exciting and new. Come aboard, they’re expecting you.
I don’t hate the team, just the uniform, the fact they are not the expos and name.
I hate all those things too
Agreed. The Grays were the Washington team to revive, not the Nats.
Although, I would have been cool with “Senators” too.
I wanted Senators; the jokes would have been endless.
I don’t much like any of the 30 MLB teams anymore, when you get down to it.
At the risk of offending you, that might be like trying to gauge A’s fans from going to a Raiders game.
Fair point.
Brett Wallace at third today
I’m for moving Barton there too….for no particular reason.
I love you
Thanks, and go As.
Brett Walrus.
K’s brilliant/insane thought of the day: The scientific developments of the next 100 years that explain/define/learn to exploit dark matter will also explain/define/help learn to exploit telekinesis and timeline manipulation through conscious mental acts.
Pshaw! Dark matter is the easy stuff; dark energy on the other hand, that just FKs with fysiks.
Thanks for the tip.
Liveblog lineups:
Any Cespedes sightings?
Not yet. Pretty sure I saw SuSlu heading into the game.
That apostrophe is killing me.
I’d hate to see how badly they would have mangled it if Kila was playing 1st…
why is it there?
i’m considering reporting it.
Yay, thanks.
It’s harder to get the lineups in spring than it is during the regular season.
DDJ! I miss his smile.
I don’t miss his propensity to hit his home runs only in clusters against garbage-y pitchers.
Rare clusters at that
View from my seat. Sitting in a section full of scouts. Next to an Astros scout with a radar gun. Will provide updates if possible after chemotherapy.
nice, doc! primo seat!
Our man in Hohokam! Nice.
McCarthy sitting at 92 comfortably, looked really strong. Made Ian Stewart look silly.
Wow. He kicks ass throwing 88-90. If he can throw 92 with any regularity, with his change, he’s going to be positively filthy this season.
Offense is in mid season form. No balls out of the infield, the pitcher has the most assists, and two called strike threes have been watched.
Well they sold big in 2008 when they were almost tied with the Angels at the ASB. I’m not sure they’re going to be fooled by that scenario.
Yeah, that one pissed me off a lot. I was unhappy with that decision.
Quite possible. He wasn’t even looking. Just trying to throw strikes, I think.
Wes Timmons wins the first ball out of the infield award, with the warning track power we have come to know and love in our Athletics.
I’m hoping he wins the 3B job, just because he’s been around for like a 100 years in the minors
Hell… I just want him to get at least one plate appearance in the Japan series.
If he can hold the corner down and OPS over .650 for a couple months until someone steps up or a trade is made, even better.
Yay, a run! Reddick nearly took off the second base umpire’s head with that laser.
I’m afraid your commentary is disturbingly coherent for spring training.
Have to drive, or I’d be having considerably more Old Style.
Grand slam! Back of the A’s pen. He actually got under that ball. I shudder to think where it would have gone if he didn’t.
Brandon Allen, I should add.
I’m feeling good feelings about Allen, though primarily because he’s on my fantasy team
Is it a league that restricts the availability pool to the players with adjacent initials?
I’d pick Adrian Beltre
No. A 24 team permanent keeper league that just had a 48 round draft.
Back to back, there goes Sogard. Second of the spring.
Carignan in.
LOL. Two dumb Cub baserunners are dumb. Probably the first and last time I’ll see a catcher pick two consecutive baserunners off first.
Carignan solidly at 94, by the way.
nice.
2-run double for BA. One man show, he is.
Thanks for the live commentary. Ray and Vince have mostly been talking about kettle corn.
Hey, man! Kettle Corn’s 2-3 with a ribbie!
They also told a story about Bob Uecker sunning himself during ST games that strongly implied that Bill King used to sunbathe nude.
I do not find this hard to believe.
With margaritas.
Was anyone aware that Fuentes sucks?
Edgar “Four Eyes” Gonzalez?
Come on… the RiverCats can do better than that!
Edgar Gonebaseball got a contract/invite? I’d completely forgotten. Wish he had, too.
Who did that foul ball in the booth hit?
It hit the back wall of the booth. Korach mocked Fosse for taking cover rather than trying to make the play.
Caught someone in the head on the rebound.
Sean Doolittle pitching!! 93 on the gun.
Doolittle turned a lot of heads with the scouts, several of whom didn’t know who he was.
Did he throw anything other than the fastball?
He should — he pitched in college.
Pretty good breaking ball, looked like a curve. Nice separation from his fastball (about 78.).
Yay for spring training reports! I’m passing on the trip this year after having gone the last two seasons so I hope a few of you can give us more live FKing from Arpaioburg.
I spent today at Stinson Beach in the sun on this stunning March day, with the game on the radio, not paying much attention.
Water sure was bracing, though.
So, Christina Hendricks’ phone was hacked.
Perhaps there is a god after all
Thanks, and go As.

This is what sitting in a row full of scouts looks like:
I’ve done that before behind the plate in Sacramento. It’s fun to chat with those cats if their lips aren’t completely tight.
they reeeeeally all need their own? Like seriously, they can’t start a little scouts’ club and share gun information…?
That was my thought, too. I am also uncertain as to why all scouts are required to wear a golf shirt, a baseball cap or visor from a golf company, and khaki pants. The two in front of me were fairly friendly with each other, but the others were pretty tight-lipped.

A lot of scouts calibrate their guns slightly off so that if someone looks over their shoulder, the reading is inaccurate.
So Carignan was actually throwing 108?
In fSU, guns slightly calibrated off scouts.

I know that if I got to leave Bethlehem PA in early March for a weekend in the Bay Area, I might not be playing my best either.
1. I sat near a bunch of pro scouts for part of the first game. Overheard the one in an A’s hat say (about what player, I don’t know) “well I don’t want to take anything away from the game he had last night, but even with all those knocks he only had four ribbies.”

I’m now officially leaning toward endorsing a BAVBBL FKup
I’d rather watch vintage than college anyway.
But a great basketball team!
So they must. Didn’t get to see any of it. Do they have the same ugly brown uniforms?
This is amusing: Gnats delayed by swarm of bees
obligatory
How is everyone doing?
I’m getting ready to go out to karaoke.
How’d your stand-up act go?
Pretty well.. I’m hooked. I’m gonna try to hit up some open mics throughout the Bay Area, too.
And rock it, SPWC!
Whoa…you’re brave!

Devo’s Whip It is my go-to karaoke song. Easily faked without singing ability, can insert the word “bitches” nearly at will.
pump it up has become mine. i practice watch your step but it’s never on the menu, so i pick another one.
not doing yourself favors by doing a costello song
Why? He’s a mediocre singer. Imagine if Pavarotti sang “Mystery Dance”
first, that would be awesome.
but since av shaved apparently the first thing people see about him is his elvis costello/buddy holly glasses.
Oh yeah! I see that now!
Counterpoint to Pavarotti + pop song being awesome: Pavarotti singing Perfect Day with Lou Reed is pretty much the worst thing ever.
Counter-counter-point: imagine Pavarotti singing Sister Ray.
Imagine Pavarotti singing Sugar Ray
Thanks, and go As.
Thanks a lot, now I have to cut my ears off.
it wouldn’t be as funny otherwise.

the best I could do was:
Blur- “Parklife”
Gorillaz f/ De La Soul- “Feel Good Inc.”

Lana Del Rey- “Video Games” (nice and low…. good song for a tranny)

I was gonna do “Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell” if they had it, but no…
I love “Friends in Low Places”….it’s accurate for me
Just cause I’m short…
What number is this, Jim?
Reply fail to “Friends in Low Places.”
