Tell ya what — you click the “game thread” box on this one, and I’ll delete mine.
Okay, let me just figure out how to do that…
I took care of it
What did your game thread say about scoring here with “bases loaded, one out”?
Is it just me, or does gameday sometimes adopt a snide tone: “flies out softly.”
“Crosby ends the inning without putting up much of a fight.”
“Crosby swings and misses at a slider low and away … again”
wordpress just got a little snippy with me: “you are posting too quickly. slow down.” ouch.
“Haven’t you said enough already?”
I need an animated gif of Cust bunting.
“Fiery J. Cust reached on fundamentally sound bunt single to pitcher, K. Suzuki to second”
(sorry, animation is not among my core competencies)
No preview, ugh, here goes.
Also, welcome. Now that you’re approved you won’t have to wait to see future comments.
Let’s see if this works.
This is really an extraordinarily ugly park.
I think Billy should trade Crosby for Longoria.
Only if they give back Pena
Time for a (wal)K.
now wordpress is editing my comments.
and possibly affecting the game.
That was a strike; Suzuki did a bad job framing it.
Gallagher sucks.
lol
I disagree.
whoa….
I leave for five minutes, and now we’re down by 5 and Kurt looks hurt. And like he was crying.
…just saw the replay. Ouch.
I haven’t been watching/listening for a week or so. Has it been this painful the whole time? ‘Cause, DAMN.
< composes open letter to Sean Gallagher >
6 runs on 2 hits in the first inning = welcome back to the bigs.
Here’s hoping Gallagher takes a deep breath, settles down, and executes (note: he’s now 36/60 pitches for strikes, so I think in the end he’ll be ok).
Yikes. I just jinxed the crap out of him.
Sorry.
Wow, KenKo sounds defeated.
And here’s Gio. I foresee another 5-inning relief stint, followed by a flight right back to Sacramento. Lucky guy.
Okay, that’s enough punishment for me, I’m going to find something else to do. See you all tomorrow.
I couldn’t make it through the first
I just couldn’t
This feels a lot like the dying days of the Jackie Moore managerial tenure. All we need is for Holliday to send a rat to Slusser.
My money’s still on a case of Dan Meyer Disease for Gallagher.
Maybe Gallagher will be good again as soon as the A’s give up on him.
Dan Meyer’s stats this year with the Marlins:
16.2 IP
1.62 ERA
0.72 WHIP
4.9 H/9
0.5 HR/9
1.6 BB/9
11.3 K/9
Please make the suck stop.
With this team they’d just started blowing instead.
In case anyone was wondering Kendall got his 2000th hit. Of course, he is hitting .226 at the moment.
Considering how Beane’s moves have not paid off (so far anyways) when do you write this season off and start calling the other GMs to see what you can get for Holliday, Cabrera, etc? I think that if the A’s are not at or around .500 50-60 games in you have got to start making moves to dump players.
When the A’s started 17-32 in 2005 and then made a huge run (58-24 from May 30-August 30), we heard a lot about how rare it was for a team that sunk as low as 15 games under .500 to come back and finish over .500. I think there was one other occurrence, a Pittsburgh team in the 1960s. So it would be pretty unlikely for that to happen in Oakland twice within five seasons. Sure, this is a lousy division, but somebody should be able to finish above .500 just due to all the intra-divisional games. At this time, I’m thinking that 15 under .500 figure is the point where you pull the trigger. So, probably in a week to ten days.
I think it would be pretty easy for someone with another time on their hands to go through how many wins the A’s should expect based on their preferred projection (probably ZiPS since it updates in season). Do the same for the Angels, M’s, and Rangers. Add them to current records and voila.
Off-hand I had the A’s pegged for 85 wins or so. The Angels were projected for 81-81 or so. Texas and Seattle were both around 70-75. Don’t kill me if these numbers are off, it’s just my recollection. For simplicity, I’ll assume the projections have been static (which they’re not).
The A’s .524 projected winning percentage leads to 66 more wins, add the 13 they have, which gives the A’s 79 overall. Doing the same for Texas and Seattle (assuming 75 was correct) leads to 80 and 75 wins respectively. The Angels project to 81 still.
One could mess with binomial distributions to give odds on the A’s making the playoffs. At what point do you give up? 10% odds of playoffs? 5?
Again sans calculations, I’d give it a month to see if the A’s catch up.
You’re forgetting about “progression to the mean”
No. If I flip a coin 5 times and they’re all heads, it implies one of two things. Either the coin is weighted wrong and heads has a more likely chance than I originally expected (> 50%) or that a 1/32 event just happened.
What I should not expect is the coin to progress to the mean and flip tails 5 times.
The A’s are a similar situation. Either they have a true winning percentage lower than we expected or they went through an unlucky patch. But that patch has already happened. We should not expect them to improve to revert to what we originally predicted.
It was a reference to a month-long argument on ** several years ago.
You guys are making AN references that even I don’t get? Geez, you guys are old. Oaktoon?
yup. And then he wrote several more angry diaries over the next few weeks and the topic kept being debated until he was eventually banned.
He was never banned. He actually just decided to leave, and reincarnate himself many times.
We were always at war with oceania
BPro playoff odds had the A’s at 6% before tonight’s debacle.
1. Pretty much everyone has performed at worst case scenario levels of suck thus far. It simply cannot go on like this.
2. We are 1-2 (maybe 3) team meetings away from a genuine resurgence. I can feel it.
As for Holliday, I hope his dalliance with mediocrity hasn’t nicked his value too much. There are oodles of contenders and quasi-contenders with gaps in the outfield … Tigers, Jays, Mets, Yankees, Braves, even the Giants.
oodles?! Might we get noodles for him?!
This one probably makes more sense since it combines in-season data with preseason projections. Still, 12% ain’t good.
Maybe I should just root for Grant Green to fall to the A’s.
I prefer this one:

I wanted to post a “fail” picture, but I guess “fail” is contagious.
the craftsmanship with which this roster was assembled.
I’m sorry, what were you just saying? I was watching footie and signing my revenue-sharing check on the hunched-over back of Eric Chavez.
I think even the pessimistic folks predicted mediocrity, or something close to it, which many believed could even be enough to be competitive in this division.
I don’t think anyone predicted pretty much a worst case scenario for 90% of the roster. Actually maybe WaddellCanseco did. Whatever happened to that guy? He quit ** but never showed up here…
Well if we’re going to lose to an AL East powerhouse, I’m glad it’s the Rays. I liked not seeing NYY in the playoffs last year.
The Rays were playing a really irritating song whenever they scored, there was way too much cowbell, and they play in fucking Florida. I’d prefer the Yankees.
They’ve grown awfully fucking annoying for having one fucking AL Champ banner and one AL East banner and having retired Wade Boggs’ number.
I must tell you, that very well could’ve been the very worst game I’ve ever attended. I paid $12 for tickets, $15 for parking, and I think part of my soul is now gone. I did get something of worth, though. More tomorrow.
did you get the key to Macha’s secret chest where he keeps his gum?
No, but the concession stand holds something quite interesting…
Perfect for a single-serving team. I was gonna do a whole DLD around it, but with the news about Chavy…plus I got work and I gotta go watch them get tortured again tonight.
AWE. SOME. My god — that’s the single best press release EVER.
Uh-oh. Don’t anyone let Lew see this, though (emphasis added):
We need (a) someone to photoshop FRANK’S QUALITY KRAUT SINGLES in as an outfield-wall-ad sponsor, and (b) someone with photoshop skilz to work that into a site logo. I’m going online to order a gross.
ewww….
gross.
Just what the
doctormonkey ordered!God, why am I watching Baseball Tonight right now…
“Kevin Millar, he goes places and they win!”
Wasn’t he with the Orioles for the last few years? So he wins with the Red Sox and over 1.5 months this year?
In their defense, that’s not very specific. Maybe they meant, “Kevin Millar goes (to Taco Bell) and (the terrorists) win.”
What a selfish asshole. You’d think he’d just stop eating at Taco Bell, but no! Millar wants a Volcano Double Beef Burrito. Selfish fucking prick. Al Qaeda wants you to eat that taco, douchebag.

I posted another comment in the same thread. I looked at the tracking DB, and it looks like it’s registering a lot of userid = 0 (which I assume means not logged in, and which I will update the code to handle) but it does have you visiting that post. If you go back to it (the lower DLD), you should see one comment marked read and one marked unread.
If not, what is your time zone? I may be handling that wrong.
Yup – that one showed up as unread fine.
I think the problem was the logged in/not logged in thing.
I’m going to fix it tonight to detect when people aren’t logged in (and provide a login link). That should get us running.
