I love the smell of yeast and melted butter in the morning 76

English muffin batter proofing. Used Alton Brown’s recipe, but subbed in 100% whole wheat (King Arthur) and added a tablespoon of flax meal.

Man, (WARNING: OSTLER LINK) Baer is this close to stepping on my Lew-should-build-a-500-seat-stadium-in-Hillsborough gag. Surprised Ostler didn’t go for the “Caramelized” joke.

    Link fixed. When I saw Baer golfing the last few days I kept rooting for him to shank it into the ocean, but he actually looked pretty good.

    If the A’s got a Pebble Beach stadium it would make the PacBell waterfront view look like Gary Indiana by comparison.

    This article (Shea warning) about the upcoming debut of the independent league San Rafael Pacifics is full of all kinds of coolness.

    • They’ll open in May in what might be the smallest park in all of North American professional sports, 750 seat Albert Park in downtown San Rafael. Also, free parking (though tickets cost as much as A’s tix).
    • They had tryouts in Oakland recently, which explains why I saw baseball players on the Laney College diamond as I drove by on 880 a week or two ago. Without knowing the backstory, the sight made me feel warm and fuzzy.
    • Ex-Dodger OF Mike Marshall (not to be confused with ex-Dodger pitcher Mike Marshall) is the manager. “Independent ball has been a part of Marshall’s life – as a player, manager and executive – from when he was a Schaumburg (Ill.) Flyer in 1999 to stops in Albany, N.Y.; Fort Worth and El Paso, Texas; Yuma; and, most recently, the now defunct Chico Outlaws, who won the 2010 NABL title.”
    • Giants fans might remember him for his 10th-inning, game-winning homer at Candlestick Park in April 1987.

      Rounding the bases, Marshall repeatedly pointed at Giants manager Roger Craig, who had intentionally walked Pedro Guerrero a third time to face Marshall.

    • In a more recent on-field spat, he fought with Yuma third baseman Tony Phillips in August. The same Phillips, 52, who played on that ’88 A’s team that Marshall’s Dodgers beat. The Yuma team’s manager? Jose Canseco. Marshall speaks of a series of events leading up to the fracas and “a lot of verbal abuse by Tony Phillips and unprofessionalism by Jose Canseco.”

    Anyone given any more thought to a good date for the first major all-hands FK Day of 2012? Saturday May 12 is still my first choice. The sooner we pin down a date, the sooner elcroata can book his flight, and the sooner we know when we need to scuttle all the whale watching ships by.

    Also, thoughts on Suite Day?

    • nevermoor Feb 12,2012 5:33 pm || Up

      I’m thinking it makes sense to combine those two and do it on either a weekend or a free parking day so we can get maximum tailgating action.

      And if e/c is booking a flight I think the least we can do is let him pick.

      "There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
      • gonealookin Feb 12,2012 5:48 pm || Up

        Looking back at your original post the suite is 18 seats so you’d have to divide the FKers seating into the suite FKers and the not-so-suite FKers. As far as free parking Tuesdays it seems like it would be best to have the Big Ass Sausagefest on a weekend when FKers coming from outside the Bay Area can get there.

          Agreed all around. It really does have to be a weekend for a tailgate of sufficiently sweeping scope…weeknights get you two hours of lot time at most. And it would be awkward to have suitened and unsuitened FK groups.

      5/12 – Tigers
      6/23 – Giants
      7/7 – Mariners

    By the way, I’m diagnosing the IE issue.

    You IE users can fix it by manually setting your IE browser to display FK in standard mode instead of Quirks mode. I should figure out why a certain plugin is killing that at some point, but until then the site (and backend) should display properly in standard mode using any IE > 6.
