Experience a better package 106

Yesterday’s snack: kraut mix sprouts and wheat grass juice courtesy of Brooks and Daughters (yep, Jim’s a Sharks fan surprised he wasn’t sporting orange and black for the photo, though), juice container courtesy of F-K.com. We’re buying sprouts and “green juice” (as JP calls it — he loves it!) every Saturday around 10 at the FBFM.

    The Georgia native floated what he described as an “extraordinarily radical proposal” in November that would allow poor children to find work as janitors in their own schools.

    “I tried for years to have a very simple model,” Gingrich said. “Most of these schools ought to get rid of their unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school.”

    Of course, that would run afoul of longstanding laws designed to prohibit the exploitation of children.

    Gingrich characterized those laws as “truly stupid.”

    I mean… I couldn’t even come up with this stuff if I tried.

    • PaulThomas Jan 31,2012 4:07 pm || Up

      Actually, as Gingrich crazy goes, this one is less crazy than it might seem. Japanese public elementary schools all require their students to clean the classrooms. Apart from being too cute by half, it does teach teamwork and cooperation.

      The linking of it to poor kids (and the anti-union animus, I guess) is the asinine part. If everyone had to do it, I wouldn’t have much of a problem with it.

      • monkeyball Jan 31,2012 4:38 pm || Up

        It’s less about linking it to poor kids (though that’s the cover) than it is to black kids. If white kids had to do it — parents would be up in arms. (Well, black parents would be up in arms, too, but Newt, GOP primary voters, and the media don’t care about them.)

                  I fully agree that making actually paying for your parking easier is a good way to make getting the money work. For example, I don’t even think about bridge tolls, since it autocharges my credit card every so often.

                  Fully automating things strikes me as a significant engineering challenge, but the new CC-accepting meters are a great first step.

                  "There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
                • Future Ed Jan 31,2012 7:10 pm || Up

                  I agree with this. ECs story about paying from the phone made me think there has to be an optimum price for meter/fine balance to maximize revenue. My guess would be that the punitive chicago style (that you described) or sf style may not be best for revenue.

                  I don’t know if revenue should be the goal, but it would be interesting to me. If any of you city planners know a source…

                  PS I resisted getting Fastrack till a few months ago because I hate taking peoples jobs, but they made it just. so. difficult. to pay a toll taker.

      Thanks EM, good stuff. A couple of addenda:

      Woodall: “(w)hat they’ve done is shift the money — $4 million — from redevelopment into a city fund, I’m not sure if that’s a general fund or not.” Actually the money has been added to the list of “enforceable obligations,” agreements which localities claim are binding on their redevelopment agencies prior to the Feb. 1 dissolution date, and thus not subject to being returned to the State per the end of redevelopment. It remains to be seen how much the State will attempt to “clawback” of the various such agreements which every redevelopment agency in the state hurried to execute last year.

      Re MLB preferring urban fabric ballparks such as JL Sq. MLB has actually backed off this stance. They’ll take a park wherever it can be built (once they’ve decided which county that might be in).

      Woodall: “There’s ownership that’s interested in buying the team and keeping it in Oakland.” I’d really like to hear more about this.

  23. the llama Jan 31,2012 7:26 pm

    Newt Gingrich, man of science.

    Who else has carried a microchip and a vacuum tube in his pocket for impromptu lectures on the history of technology, taken time out from a hectic campaign schedule to visit labs at leading research universities, and loudly called for doubling federal spending on science?

    A huge fan of zoos, Gingrich has coauthored books on conservation and environmental issues with psychobiologist Terry Maples, who ran zoos in Atlanta and Palm Beach, Florida. He’s spent time in the field digging up dinosaur bones with paleontologist John “Jack” Horner of Montana State University in Bozeman, and even spent several hours debating T. rex’s eating habits with Horner as a fundraiser for a museum.

    Truly fascinating, and my favorite part:

    “At about the same time that Newt Gingrich read Chimpanzee Politics … [former President] Jimmy Carter read my book Peacemaking among Primates. Both are local politicians here in Atlanta, and I have actually met both. Although flattered, I have always felt they should have switched books. Carter would have benefited from knowing more about Machiavellian power politics, and Gingrich could have learned from the peacemaking skills of bonobos and other primates.”
