Aidnaltrop s1e1: scenes from the real Stumptown 542

Standing in line at a Rite Aid in Tigard behind a family of (I believe) relatively recent Eritrean emigrants. They’re using foodstamps to buy some groceries. The Caucasian feller behind me in line announces to the world in general: “Gee, you think if we went to their country, they’d give us free food?”

JP in tow, all I allowed myself was a dirty glance in his direction.

10-minutes-later-in-the-car-ideal response: I turn around and say, “No, they wouldn’t — and that acceptance of immigrants and cultural/religious diversity, protection of families, and social safety net are what make the US of A the greatest goddam country in the world. Love it or leave it, bub.”

Unsaid: “You’d last 30 seconds in Eritrea, fatboy.”

    My reply would be, “In their country, you’d probably hunted for sport and roasted on a pit or kidnapped by pirates and used as a human toilet.”

      Shouldn’t they give you free food before the pit roasting?

        I’m sure there’d be a few leftovers from the previous clerk roast.

    Saw an interesting write up about big money FA contracts, followed by intelligent discussion. It’s Canadian, in case anyone has an aversion to them foreigners.

    • Future Ed Dec 31,2011 11:06 am || Up

      that was fun.

      I will say that Giambi’s contract was considered bad because of his mysterious injury more than his play. To a lesser degree so did Alex Rodriguez.

      I know injuries are part of the analysis, but I feel like it needs to be looked at more closely

    I believe Eritrea has a reputation for being particularly hospitable and generous to strangers, so the answer is probably “Yes, they would give us free food there.”

      I’ve been curious about how they adapt the installation logistics of these cameras to various stadiums. I’m not sure they have one up at all at the Coliseum, and I wonder if it’s because the odd built-in-stages architecture doesn’t lend itself to a four-point cable which I assume it requires.

        They managed to do it at the old Memorial Stadium for Cal games. Very weird to watch the thing move around in person.

        Those things are neat for the TV viewer, but I bet they are distracting for in attendees.

        • Soaker Dec 31,2011 12:08 pm || Up

          Eh, you notice them but they’re not particularly distracting. Much less so than those elevated sideline cameras. I was at the Las Vegas Bowl last week and one of these contraptions was up. A couple guys were out there constantly during timeouts re-feeding the lines through the thing.

          There’s usually something high enough up at four suitable points to anchor the lines to. At the Coliseum it might be two light towers over the old bowl and perhaps anchors on the facing of the upper deck on either end of Mt. Davis.

              I think they usually stick it deep in the back field so unless it’s directly in your line of sight, you wouldn’t notice.

              • Soaker Dec 31,2011 12:25 pm || Up

                Yes, it’s usually positioned about 10-15 yards behind the play.

                In that Las Vegas game there were a couple of 100-yard kick returns. That’s actually when you notice the camera most, when it’s chasing the kick returner all the way down the field.

    Fun JoePos (careful not to drop the S when you enunciate that) article breaking down all 44 years in which the MVP was not decisively the best hitter of that year. Nice discourses on the Williams-DiMaggio rivalry, the slower pace of integration in the AL (from 1949-59 nine of the 11 NL MVPs were African-American; none of the AL MVPs were), and the argument that owner collusion in the 80’s is what’s thus far cost Tim Raines a Hall of Fame spot.

            Often, you can find the same components on Amazon cheaper. That’s been my experience, anyway. Newegg’s good for the combo deals they offer.

          • oblique Jan 2,2012 8:47 am || Up

            Amazon/NewEgg were about the same price for what I was looking at, and since I’m on Prime, I figured I’d get stuff faster with Amazon.. but I do like NewEgg a lot.

            So the setup is that we’re subletting space from another company that’s also just moving in. I want us on our own subnet, with VPN access so that I can restrict access to certain servers to an IP or IP range (all our servers are VPSes), as well as ssh access to our production servers.

            Ideally I would’ve wanted a linux server and to just use iptables and openvpn, but I really don’t have a lot of time for config and maintenance, as my primary responsibility is on the product side (design/architect/write/deploy/maintain the software). So for the firewall I went with a Netgear ProSafe FVS336G-NAS200 VPN appliance. It does SSL VPN, which is what I want, and the FW throughput is 60Mbps, which dwarfs the 12-16Mbps we’ll get from our fiber ISP (about $250).

            Behind that, I got a Cisco SG200-26 gigabit managed switch (about $290); figured I can’t go wrong with Cisco. And for the price I see no reason to not go with gigabit, even if we don’t need it immediately. Then, for each office (thick concrete walls in between them; 4 offices total), a Cisco-Linksys WRT310 (refurb) for like $30 ea — 4 gigabit ports and a wireless-n router.

            Also got an APC UPS for the firewall and switch. In the office, we’re all going to have laptops. Things I need to get soon are:
            – a network laser printer, not necessarily wireless
            – a backup server
            – two 27″ monitors to work with macbooks (we can’t afford the highest resolution ones; looking for something in the $300/ea range)

            Thoughts/criticisms are welcome — I consider myself a novice at this.

              I have no space for criticism. I’m just fascinated by that side of things.

            If he doesn’t do it immediately and without any grumbling, even Tyler, BBG and OptimistPrime would bail on him. You might try to log back in a few times this afternoon and see if you’ve been silently reinstated.

            Slusser’s thing about the “happy, cohesive OC community not being all fractured” though…come on, between FK and the OC lounge, and with the most recent damage being largely irreparable barring Toonces’ resignation, it’s way too late for that kind of talk.

            I don’t think that’s how it’s going to go this time. Libya would have stayed under Gaddhafi control if the UN hadn’t have stepped in and bombed the shit out his military and positions. Gaddhafi purged tens of thousands and would have purged tens of thousands more if he could have.

            Slusser’s comment might be the closest thing there is to an angry plea from the French Foreign minister, but it’s more than likely not going to be enough, unless she was to write about this whole thing on a grander stage…

            If I was TCA and feeling vindictive, I’d ban almost everybody who’s also on FK and anybody who starts the meta battle to protest their ban.

            If I was the type of blog owner who was okay with allowing his sub-blogs to be racist and sexist and ban people arbitrarily, I would care about the bottom line more than the rights or feelings of semi-anonymous customers who only bring in fractions of pennies at a time.

                  Short term it’s certainly good for hits. Hell, he got me to log in and comment for the first time since about the beginning of the season. I said I was making a resolution not to involve myself in Old Country meta. Well, I have 4 more hours. I might head up to In-N-Out and order a 4×4 tonight too. But yes, long term it’s pretty bad, though not catastrophic if he would recognize how out of sync with the community he is and step down (I wasn’t the least bit uncomfortable throwing that out there, WC). I think he’s way too proud to do it though.

                  I don’t think its going to happen. Basically the real impact of Nico doing what he did isn’t going to show up immediately and the blog has had a bunch of these fits before and nothing like what is about to happen (i think) ever happened and the site survived.

                  Its just like the email that I sent to Tyler years ago complaining about Nico lauding Dan White’s aim, hes much more comfortable doing nothing.

                  I don’t recall any administrator coming under this kind of fire before. Blez has venture capitalists to answer to. If overall business is down, sometimes you need a fall guy. He now has a convenient one.

                  Yeah, I agree with this. In matters blogacolypse the presumption always has to be “this’ll blow over eventually,” because that’s almost always what happens. That might not be true this time (or it might; AN might be able to chug along as a lame blog quite well without folks of our ilk). Anyway, from where Blez sits I can’t imagine him even asking Nico to step down, much less forcing him to. Among other things, that’s a message which could get him in trouble with his other 200 blog proprietors.

                  As I understand it they’re more like franchisees. So if the message is that SBN can yank your franchise due to user strife (based, really, on violations of internal rules that SBN doesn’t care about at all), i can see how that might not sit well with ll the blogmasters. And losing a bunch of them really would hurt SBN.

                  I have no idea if that’s accurate or remotely part of the Blez perspective.

                  Tyler wouldn’t fire him and I don’t think he should. The scenario is that Toonces and BBG have a heart-to-heart, a lot of tears are shed and he realizes what’s best for him. But I don’t think it’s likely at all; he’ll open the season at the helm.

                  I did gently suggest he consider resigning. I was able to avoid the obvious assholish snark: “It was a good idea to put a poll up and promising to act on the community’s democratic decision, but that’s the wrong question you’re asking.”

                  1) He doesn’t have to do it today. He can wait till numbers come out and summon the administrator to his office with the message that he needs to get more traffic. I’m imagining that numbers come out pretty much every day or every week. Then he can ask for a marketing plan — how do you plan to get those numbers up? Basically he can make the administrator feel like a non-performing subordinate who isn’t well thought of by the company.

                  2) He can start grooming BBG or someone else to take over. He’s already said that he trusts BBG in the same way that he trusts the present administrator to run things without his daily oversight.

                  3) He can start favoring other administrators of the one in question in subtle ways — get interviewed at their blogs, and praise them to the skies as model administrators who everyone else should take lessons from.

                  There are ways to get rid of people who aren’t performing without outright firing them after a dust-up.

          I entirely understand where she’s coming from with that, but while it’s “unfair” for her words to be thrown around like that, you’re 100% correct. When she emails in that capacity it’s not much different than her posting it to you on **. It’s partly why the way they’re doing it is broken. Someone who represents the majority vote, who firmly believes you deserve to be addressed, should be the one writing that email since they’re the one’s who are going to have to live with it.

                This is a bit harsh. He does seem to be proud of his work at the school, and I’m guessing rightly so.

                The whole thing is rather pathetic:

                He seems to genuinely care a lot about the community and the site, and I do believe he works hard at his job. I also really like his sense of humor although I guess that’s a matter of individual taste.

                The problems are:

                1) He’s not very knowledgeable about baseball, and he desperately wants to be seen as an expert in that field for some reason I don’t really understand. Further he’s not willing to learn anything new to improve his expertise. He expects to sort of watch games and do what any fan does and receive accolades. It’s very sad to see how offended he is when his recaps aren’t thought of as interesting and people just want to lounge, or when other posters present evidence that his views are wrong.

                2) He is not charismatic the way that guy at Lookout Landing is for example. He doesn’t inspire his flock to do better, nor does his presence draw traffic to the site.

                3) He has no client focus. For some reason he thinks that his relationship with the posters, as evidenced by his communications with MikeV and nevermoor, is that of superior-subordinate rather than that of service provider-customer. This is likely to be his biggest failing from the perspective of Vox Media or whatever the company is called.

                4) He is a lousy leader — one who demands deference rather than inspiring respect. I’ve no idea why he refers to himself as “blogfather” or “chief administrator”, when as far as I can tell his function is simply that of “administrator”. It’s not like he has a team of “sous-administrators” or capos or consiglieres or anything.

                He seems like a well-meaning and worthwhile person who wants too much to be more than he is, an affliction that we all probably have at some point.

                  and, now, he’s apparently decided to take his ball and go home for realsies.

                  My bet is that he’s trying to ignore it and hope it all goes away, though I have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes with mods and Blez etc etc.

                  I *do* find it Fking hilarious that, AGAIN, he goes out of his way to say “I’m making my last comment” (OC Link) and said “there’s nothing that neeeds to be ‘solved’ that can’t be solved in 2 weeks”

                  He still didn’t unban me before he left. :LOL:

They were removed some years ago, around the time one of those magazine articles dubbed the place “The Armpit of America”.

    Happy FKing New Year FKers.

    Welcomed in with a replay of Time Square, where first I’m told that the opening chords of Imagine are supposed to put me in mind of nothing more than the dropping of their crystal ball, and then made to suffer a rendition that changes “And no religion too” to “And all religions true”, performed in front of dozens of the best and brightest billboards.

                  Or maybe just ban all the thousands of members and leave TCA all by himself there, damn. It’s no use…. even that would probably not work.

                  I tried to help this all reach a dignified conclusion, I really did. When I went directly to Blez and then facilitated him getting with Mike on FB chat to talk about it, I was able to convince Blez to convince TCA to email Mike again… Mike assured me he’d respond (which he immediately did) and I was under the impression that given the stipulations made by TCA earlier, Mike would be reinstated once they exchanged e-missives and the main issue would be fixed.

                  Then it became that Mike had to go meet him or pose with him in a reenactment of the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours LP or whatever it was, and it escalated to where now they have guaranteed two full weeks of meta mayhem and meltdown madness over there by icing the advancement of whatever resolution might be decided upon for those 14 days.

                  I dunno, I did all I could and tried to be a good diplomat but TCA seems to have a good helping of contempt on his mind and I’m not f*ckin’ Jesus Christ, I can’t magically wave my hand and make people act like responsible adults, much less viable or credible leaders, you know?

                  Well OK, but I can see why OP didn’t address that. It’s being addressed in a bunch of other places. He was trying to add some balance. Not every post has to be about how crappy the administrators are.

                  Right but Im tired of X problem existing because of the shitty way the Admins (Nico and BBG mostly) run the place and when people bring up X problem their answer is “Admining is hard, you should be thanking us.” When I got banned, BBG basically blamed the long litany of personal attacks against me getting passes because she started a new job, the A’s were shitty, admining was hard, and I really shouldn’t have used the flagging system but rather emailed her. Basically every time a series of shitty decisions blows up in their face they pull this line and invariably, sycophant comes along and writes a THANKS MODs post.

                  That comes across meaner than I meant it. I meant that they need to look at their own strengths and maximize the benefit from those. It’s just that those strengths are not the same ones that Jeff Sullivan has.

                  Mean or not, it’s… kind of accurate nonetheless. Jeff doesn’t his homework with his thoughts, he’s not about throwing shit at the wall, hoping people adore him for it and then claiming he was just trying to start a conversation when he’s immediately proven wrong while not bothering to learn from what transpires. I don’t read Jeff (though I should), but I’d imagine he’s been proven wrong once or twice before and came out the better for it. People are wrong all the time, it’s how they handle it that defines them.

                  Nah, lots of people do a great job at work and have fun too. Take bar owners for example.

                  Some big mistakes they made included caving to Yahoo! and driving away sal, MB, Andeux et al., eliminating the “chick talk”, not paying the writers even a pittance, and putting incompetent people in charge just because they were willing to work hard for cheap.

                  It should have been tougher to get the administrator job, insisting on someone who would create a diverse and inclusive community. This is actually more consistent with a profit motive than “fun” because “fun” can mean “fun for the administrator” and not for everyone else.

                  The administrator job is as hard as you make it. There is no reason the administrator has to write regularly, if he/she isn’t as good at it as MB, Bloom, sal, elcroata, EN/NIP, etc.

                  The writers should have looked for ways to get more posters to write articles by looking for articles to promote before posting their own writings.

                  Basically everybody has to get their ego out of the way and include as many people as deeply as possible, old and new.

                  I’m willing to bet you that this approach would have resulted in growing numbers and a real competition with LL.

                  It’s weird, when it comes to Beane, I don’t really see him complaining. When he’s “making excuses” I see it more as him admitting he’s failed within the tight parameters that he has. Since most of his words are built into someone else’s context, it’s hard to see what how he’s intending them. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him not take ownership of his failures and ultimately, aside from being good friends with him, it’s why he had so much trouble firing Geren, because he saw it as his own failure to build a good team.

                  Nobody should ever complain about hard work they can voluntarily walk away from.

                  I wanted to punch a jackass DA in the throat tuesday when he complained to me that he wanted to go forward on something dumb when they fucked up because “he worked over the holiday weekend”

                  If you don’t want to do the work, don’t take the job.

        That depends on whether you think the purpose of the site is to make friends or to discuss baseball seriously.

          • WaddellCanseco Jan 1,2012 12:14 pm || Up

            Some people might not care about the second thing at all.

            • dmoas Jan 1,2012 12:26 pm || Up

              Which is just weird for a baseball site. It would make sense here, less so there. Then again, my mind is semi-removing the word “seriously” from your comment for some reason.

              • WaddellCanseco Jan 1,2012 12:28 pm || Up

                That’s fair. I was using “seriously” since DFA used “real”

                • dmoas Jan 1,2012 1:13 pm || Up

                  And my mind, for whatever reason, choose to completely edit that word out. It was really strange.

          Plus employment. You’ll need a special branch of the police force to make investigate cases of anthem tampering. You may even need undercover officers.

            But government jobs aren’t really jobs…

              This is where I’d get “prickly” before but I’ve changed with the new year.

            • WaddellCanseco Jan 1,2012 3:53 pm || Up

              Well in this case they aren’t real jobs.

              This whole issue of government jobs is a shame. It’s pretty insulting to anyone in public service to have their careers written off as a scheme to create make-work for people, which the left believes is good and the right believes is bad.

              I wish Obama had taken the opportunity to do what Kennedy did in the early ’60s in the stimulus, with a vision for how awesome this government spending was going to make things, rather than just trying to increase employment rolls.

              Government jobs in the very free markets of Hong Kong and Singapore have a lot more prestige than those in the US, and those governments do a lot for the people — public housing, infrastructure, development planning, and all kinds of other stuff.

              The framing of the issue of government jobs as “more vs less” rather than “how can we best use government to improve our country” irritates me.

    Speaking of the title, I made it through one episode of Portlandia and gave up. Seems like they are trying way to hard.

      It’s actually really remarkable — unless you’re DFA, any experience of Portland has very very little to do with DFHs

      • DFA Jan 1,2012 4:30 pm || Up

        I don’t think that is true. Portland is one of the youngest cities in the country and it doesn’t have a lot of families. I mean the whole SE and NE is like Portlandia. Not so much the west side. But really do people go over there besides to go to Powells anyway?
