Watched it with a two Texas alumni co-workers at their favorite sports bar. Turns out the place was the official Texas watch-party bar, whatever you wanna call it for Seattle metro.
I was literally the only Cal fan (forget former student) amongst what had to be close to 150 UT supporters.
Between hearing the fking Texas fight song played over the speakers on every Texas score (PATs included), $7 well drinks, Jesse Palmer’s hair, and the occasional “Tex-as Tech” chants, I have had better viewing experiences.
As for the game itself, I just thought it was very weirdly played by Cal. Obviously, the turnovers killed them (along with what appeared to be a very weak personal foul call based on the half-a-replay I saw), but it just seemed they were never in-sync offensively. Maynard, while not great, did not kill them. It just seemed whenever he was getting in a rhythm they would then hand off to Sofeli for no gain. On the other hand, when it was clear Maynard was rattled, they had him passing in a three-wide set. For Tedford to be out-coached by Mack Brown is pretty impressive. And just a little thing, but Tedford’s mis-management of the clock at the end of the first half is the kinda shit that just kills me.
One of the stranger Cal seasons in recent lore.
Last I checked, ESPN had Cal as having the 19th ranked recruiting class in the country as of 12/18 (Texas is #1 for those at home), when my friend asked me about possible decommits as a result of that dud, I’d submit that when one of Tedford’s best recruiting tactics is promising “early playing time”, a terrible loss like last night can only positively impact upon Cal recruiting.
Pretty sure the well whiskey was Beam, so that may have had a part in it. It was mainly a tequila-joint, so that may have been cheaper, but I did not check. I cannot be all negative though, their taquitos which were home-made and almost like mini-Chimichangas were outstanding!
Agree in general on Beam, unless it is priced accordingly, which it was not last night. I do not find much difference in quality between Seagrams and Beam, for example. (Speaking of cheap whiskeys, I finally bought Rebel Yell at the local government run liquor store*–normally sold at TJs–and came back very impressed). And yes, Tom Bulleit is a great man as far as I am concerned

The clock management thing came up way too often this season. The clock is running and they’re wrapped up in putting guys in motion and running Tedford’s full convoluted offense. Just get set and run some simple play. Or spike the ball.
They’re expecting a LOT of revenue out of the new stadium. If Tedford’s program has deteriorated into a Braun-like torpor that leaves 20,000 of those seats generating no revenue each week, JT won’t be coaching in the new facilities for very long.
I am really on the fence with regards to Tedford. On the one hand, I sure as shit do not trust Sandy Barbour to find a suitable replacement, and given how much cake Tedford is owed, even with the added revenue I think they would have to go pretty cheap on a replacement.
On Tedford himself, if this current class holds, I wanna say that will be the third straight top 25 class he has put together. Now granted, not everyone performs at the level they expect them to, but it does beg the question as to why this team is struggling so much?
too bad you can’t see the pretty blue eyes in the black and white world of film noir.

Perfect place for him, given that things REALLY went to a head when he got all snarky about dfa’s post re: Angels finances (which, in light of subsequent events was NOT AT ALL correct as to what Arte was willing to spend…)
“Feel so bad, feel like a ballgame on a rainy day”-Lightnin’ Hopkins by justANotherAsFan on Dec 29, 2011 7:57 PM PST up reply actions
Except this is what I said. Which totally fits the dumblefuck. If someone would post that I would be quite grateful.
How can they address these problems going forward? From the spreadsheet, it appears that the Angels have already over extended themselves. Despite jettisoning Fuentes’ $9m salary and $5.25m in dead weight from the expiration of Justin Speier’s colossally bad deal, they are projected to spend $132.4m. That figure is beyond both their 2010 payroll, and what is reasonable for a team that lost $10m at a lower payroll just last year. With these levels of expenditures the Angels can expect to lose money. They can cut bait with Mike Napoli and Reggie Wiltis to save $6m this year to give them some more flexibility.
The need to extend current players and going over budget would seem to preclude adding a big FA acquisition, but I wouldn’t be so sure. If the Angels add a large contract they should be able to structure it to avoid a significant hit this year and pay for it in future years where their commitment to deadweight players like Gary Mathews Jr. expire. Next year for example, if the Angels signed Cliff Lee to a 7 year $168m deal, they could pay for it almost completely with the expiring contracts of Kazmir and GMJ. I expect that the Angels could take a $10 million hit to their pocket book to remain competitive and acquire a FA, while using the length of the deal to make up for it being short in the first year. With that being said a longer contract is probably better for the Angels financial health and Cliff Lee fits that profile, since his contract will likely be 6 to 7 years. Adrian Beltre would also fit that profile since he will have a 5 year contract.

No hes right… I also didn’t predict using Pujols to drive TV revenue to totally change the spending scape. That being said it would save a bunch of money I also thought Weaver would require a lot more money because Boras wouldn’t agree to such a team friendly deal. They also saved a lot of money on Morales’ injury.

I hope and believe that, whatever tidal waves strike yonder, whatever influx of refugees, FK is not simply reactive, and to me this starts getting into the tell-him-to-tell-her-I’m-not-talking-to-you stuff.
I almost always get crushed on my final week NFL bets; the conflicting motivations and fight/flight reactions just trip me up. But I like two games Sunday regardless. Green Bay +3.5 vs Detroit…just don’t see the Pack tanking for the home fans quite that badly, resting starters notwithstanding. And Seattle +3 at Arizona…both teams have been playing much better, but I think Seattle actually is better, and I don’t see AZ being able to pull away at all.
I know these weekly picks verge perilously close to “no one cares about your fantasy team” status, but I’ve not wanted to stop during my great 2011 roll. Now that the year’s ending and I’ve cooled down, I feel OK to write the words “hot streak” and brag that I stand at a preposterous (and SSS) 30-17 on big bets this year, a 64% clip to wrap up my most lucrative gambling year ever.
Now time to double it; Bloom tells me he knows a good Three Card Monte game.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
I like Oakland’s chances and I’ll be there in full throat. I think KC has a small chance at Denver..Chiefs are playing better and seem to be rallying around Romeo Crennel (though maybe that’s just gravitational pull again). But I can’t convince myself that the Denver train has so thoroughly jumped the tracks that they can outright lose a must-win home game against the sucky Chiefs. Anyway, to recycle a joke for the noobs, I wouldn’t touch either of those games with Bea Arthur’s wallet.
I am guardedly optimistic that the Raiders get a wildcard spot, though, via a Cincy loss to Baltimore and a Tennessee loss to Houston (Titans are my Week 17 pick for “team that desperately needs a win yet still plays like crap”).
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Really? They and Tenn have to have four separate results go their way to qualify, which seems like a longer shot based just on the denominator to me.
Ironically, both Oakland and Tenn want the Jets to win to enhance their own chances at the Jets expense, for reasons which must have to do with 3-way versus 2-way tiebreaker rules.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
I take it back, the article (insider only) was not FO, but by the the CEO of “numbefire” and “drivebyfootball” ,that favored the Jets. Oh, and I thought if the Jets win, it helps Oakland, but hurts Tennessee?
Here is a blurb from the article:
Mark Sanchez and company will need to take down Miami and have Cincinnati and Tennessee lose to even have a chance at the postseason. That’s not all: They will also need either Oakland or Denver to lose to grab the No. 6 spot. According to our algorithm, however, Cincinnati, Tennessee and Oakland should all lose this week and the Jets will win. The probability of all four events occurring, however, is pretty low.

Matt Flynn at least looked competent as well in his one start. Still, I think there is a huge boon to being the 5th seed in the NFC this year, and would expect the Lions to play like it.
Last I checked, the Titans were giving 6.5 to Houston. I hate this Titans team and will be disgusted if they win a tie break over the Raiders, but they should be able to cover, this right? I mean Houston is playing a 4th-string quarter back!
Tenn -3 at HOU. I think Houston wins, both because they need to right the ship a bit despite their locked-in playoff slot, and because I just have a feeling that Tennessee comes out flat. But here again, Bea Arthur.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Yeah, on 2nd thought, Tennessee is the same team that got destroyed by Indy. That one is a total stay-away. Easy to see why I suck at gambling.
One more, again, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought I saw Atlanta at -14 over Tampa. I think Tampa is the single worst team in the league–victory over Atlanta not with standing. I know 14 is a lot, but I think Atlanta covers.
Yeah, I like Atlanta in that game too. Tampa is miserably bad and its players can’t hit the offseason fast enough. Same with SF at St. Louis; I like those teams with positioning to play for over two crappy teams with tee times on Monday.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
At this early juncture, I find myself more disappointed with Cal basketball than football with respect to their current seasons. Tonight’s victory only adds to that.

New Order is not better than Joy Division. Musically, they were more adventurous before they started using keyboards. Peter Hook got to do all of the fun melodic work WAAAAY up the neck of the bass, creating a very unique sound.
However, New Order is listenable in mixes, or on their own… never too happy or too sad.
Joy Division, OTOH, is suicide music, and other than their early punkier violent stuff, has little other purpose. Most Joy Division songs are 9’s and 10’s, but too depressing to listen to. New Order’s full of 7’s, 8’s, and 9’s and inferior singing, yet happier vocals.

J/K. BM is a really really really good dance track. but i have no idea what the lyrics are about. as “song,” in the elevated sense, i prefer temptation and age of consent, just as i prefer movement and PCL to whatever superhits they later mixed, remixed, and anthologized. they convey feelings better, reaching a tipping point of song greatness (which i recognize physically when my eyes roll back into my head: i’m lost in the beat, especially if dual and in counterpoint, while dealing with the emotions of the song). this is why “i prefer” (rather than “i judge as better”). you get this more often and more sharply in JD’s shortly concentrated efforts (sure, aided by ian’s demise keeping the band from meandering on) than in NO’s popularity-fueled longevity.

I’ll know the place of our relocation in 3-4 months. The first few months, I’ll be traveling Monday through Friday while certifying, after which I get placed wherever the company needs me (likely somewhere in the Eastern U.S.). It’s a two-year commitment in our new place, after which I can transfer to somewhere closer to home (provided we don’t decide to stay). A bit nerve-wracking, but exciting at the same time.

Well, the company’s based out of Southern Cal, so that’s where I interviewed. And there’s a chance I’ll be placed somewhere in California, especially now that they know my preference. You know the thing I find funny about that is he used to be in charge of the CGV stuff, but then he abused that power and had to hand it over to someone else. Now he’s abused the power again by bypassing it altogether because he only handles the “grievous” ones. Bobo the clown is being defended to the death by Beane & Wolff. The only thing I hate about this whole thing is that in this analogy Ecro is Fuentes. I like him too much to think of him as FU.

I like Bulleit and Buffalo Trace as good reasonably priced bourbons.
never had buffalo trace
I really like Buffalo Trace as well.
Now granted, not everyone performs at the level they expect them to, but it does beg the question as to why this team is struggling so much?

i may have 2 dates tomorrow. neither with slf
1. Is either with DFA?
2. Palestinians do like dates I hear
1. I have kids
1a) New order over Joy division
2. We are supposed to not like Jews too, but I am married to one.
Sephardic, or Ashkenazi?
Connecticut
So that’s where the lost tribe ended up.
or as she puts it Special Occasion
I like Biret and Arrau.
Lets be honest… New Order is better.
No. ANd its not particularly close
Ya, this is kinda what I always thought. It’s hard to be better than Joy Division. They’re as good as anyone with their limited output.
agrd.
I just go shot down for morningdate. Best anyway, its a little wet and the zoo might not be fun.
Maybe I will troll the exploritorium for some au pairs
So girl with boyfriend did not in fact break up with said boyfriend last night like she intimated/ I hoped might occur.
But she has really pretty blue eyes and likes film noir… so here we still are.
have you ever seen a horrible movie called the scenesters?
Its about two LA guys who think they are filmmakers and get a job doing crime scene filming and end up making a uber cliche noir movie.
Its kinda terrible, but I can;t stop thinking about it
I have not. I might have to watch it tho. Sounds kinda like Art School Confidential.
they have it lost weekemd
what does that mean?
The video store on valencia
Oh well I don’t have an optical drive so I just stream everything.
Really, really boring flick. Not sure what the audience at RT saw that I did not.
its bad. I found it hilariously bad. Like double ironic, maybe triple.
too bad you can’t see the pretty blue eyes in the black and white world of film noir.
I might have to use that line on her.
Feel free. It’s yours now.
Hey! I have pretty blue eyes and like film noir!
Me too!
Did they sparkle and entrance at the interview?
It went really well. They’ll contact me today with either an offer or well-wishes (hopefully the former).
Excellent! Keep us posted.
Hurray!

I only have one!
One too many!!!
Breeders breed (so people like us don’t have to!)
If they want our genes so bad, they can pay us to jizz in a cup.
Im going to get a how the rebuild went wrong piece this weekend.
I’ll be excited to read it.
It all starts with Bobby Crosby…
hahaha
It all starts with the crazy 2007 injury train
He broke the unicorn. He’s dead to me.
Yes, he and Terrence Long were the start of the downfall of this team. (shakes fist)
Sweet
So, if you hit the button on the bottom on your phone, it toggles back to the old mobile format
I was hoping for a little Im banned from the old country and someone is slandering my good name over there help.
Except this is what I said. Which totally fits the dumblefuck. If someone would post that I would be quite grateful.
when slf gets off our only computer, I will
Oooh. Proxy posting to circumvent ban!
done

Waddle Canseco said you didn’t predict 2 big signings, should I mention you say beltre and Lee?
No hes right… I also didn’t predict using Pujols to drive TV revenue to totally change the spending scape. That being said it would save a bunch of money I also thought Weaver would require a lot more money because Boras wouldn’t agree to such a team friendly deal. They also saved a lot of money on Morales’ injury.
I don’t think anyone predicted that other than Moreno. The guy knows how to spend money in a way that increases revenues, and therefore budgets.
Asking someone here to post for you over there crosses a line for me.
Just saying.
Over the line”>
Mark it 8, dude.
meh, that thread has degenerated into a farce. Its all just funny now
Not my concern.
I hope and believe that, whatever tidal waves strike yonder, whatever influx of refugees, FK is not simply reactive, and to me this starts getting into the tell-him-to-tell-her-I’m-not-talking-to-you stuff.
that makes sense.
But done judiciously I find it a good gag.
Im not asking anyone to respond to any of the ** DFA is an asshole stuff. Just the baseball.
Why would you?
Why would you?
because it was a gross misrepresentation of my baseball opinion which was if they eat a loss they can go for a big contract.
Also Hi Im DFA have we ever met? I care more about being right than pretty much anything.
Fair (and I’m far from immune myself, as mrs ptbnl would readily vouch). But you already know you’re right.
Proving that Im right is pretty high up in my priority list as well
That way madness lies, for the assumption of reason abroad.
Aye, ’tis true
For DFA, I think it’s an OCD thing. He can’t help it or stop anymore than he could stop breathing. It’s not just a part of him, it is him.
I love you.
So.. this is a FKing lounge?
Dunno – there’s never been one before.
The whole place is kinda lounge-ish.
Everything is off topic, and nothing is off topic.
Thanks, and go As.
this.
You can’t handle the topic!!!
Do you think the Raiders will win? What about the Broncos?
IIRC, Football Outsiders still like the Jets to win the 6th seed.
I take it back, the article (insider only) was not FO, but by the the CEO of “numbefire” and “drivebyfootball” ,that favored the Jets. Oh, and I thought if the Jets win, it helps Oakland, but hurts Tennessee?
Here is a blurb from the article:
I think KC’s gonna win.
That’s a flip-flop from what I said two weeks ago, but the Chiefs have an improving defense and the Broncos’ D has stunk the last few weeks.
Ugh. If we flail this away I will be seriously disappointed. Not sure what our wildcard scenario is.
Denver cannot get a WC berth. It’s division championship or bust for them.
Aw hell.
Man, this Washington-Baylor game just keeps on delivering…
You see more defense in the NHL All-Star Game.
Yeah, it’s almost comical but damn fun to watch.
Wow! 66-56!
NOrth Carolina Duke game already? I though the ACC league games didn’t start till january
Cal/USC tonight was only 53-49.
At this early juncture, I find myself more disappointed with Cal basketball than football with respect to their current seasons. Tonight’s victory only adds to that.
Yeah, I too am picking up a stench of impending doom emanating from this group. Luckily I stopped caring about the football team’s results long ago.
Baylor rushed for 482 yards. That’s absurd.

My favorite part of that movie is when they had howard devoto deny he had sex in the bathroom with Tony wilson’s wife
While cleaning said bathroom.
Did you know the dwarf zookeeper was R2-D2?
Speaking of, I got this poster for christmas!
You’re sal’s brother-in-law?
No, unless my brother-in-law is hiding something from me…
That’s Sal? Had no idea..
But no I got it from my girlfriend.
Identities are transient, and being sublime sal sublimates.
But he’s got nothing on water cooler girl.
I miss her
You bastard!
it’s a real person?
Sal’s love interest.
…cue spooky background music…
That’s awesome!
I’ve been wanting either a t-shirt or a poster of that forever and now my dream has come true!
i think i did at one point, but i could be wrong
Any Joy Division reference makes me smile
this. But New Order is better.
Really? I’ve never been all that impressed. However I’ve only heard their 4-5 most famous songs
Blue Monday… Argument won.
Blue Monday is about four minutes too long and Peter Hook’s bass line is too treated… it almost sounds like a keyboard.
Warsaw… (the song and the earliest punkiest version of the band)… Argument re-won.

Ill take synths over punk every day of the week.
Well, there’s room in this great big world for both
What tools exist for comparing baseball stats from different eras?
Could we abstractly apply any of the underlying concepts to analyzing music from different eras?
Klosterman Say Relax.
World In Motion … argument lost.
Id rather have Blue Monday… Maybe its just because I don’t play for England?
funny. i wrote nearly the same thing, went overboard, erased it, and thought better to continue radio silence till things feel better in all A’s lands. but heck, here it is:
world in motion… the argument rages on aimlessly. (just like new order did!)
* this is why i prefer JD to NO.
This is where I am too. Blue Monday may be an 8 and the few other songs I’ve heard are worse, but Joy Division is full of 9s with a few 10s
Good bye, Wells Fargo.
Woo-hoo! Fantastic!
Agreed! :)
Nice. COngrats
Thanks!
Congrats. In what sort of business is the new job?
Thanks. I’ll be a consultant for a CRM software company that sells their products to auto dealers.
You, me, and oblique should get a startup going
It’ll happen.
So long silly language-restricted sign
I’m taking it with me as a fridge magnet.
Whoa, I missed that that was coming. Congratulations; hope the new venture’s awesome!
Thanks! Me too.
Excellent! What does it mean geographically?
I’ll know the place of our relocation in 3-4 months. The first few months, I’ll be traveling Monday through Friday while certifying, after which I get placed wherever the company needs me (likely somewhere in the Eastern U.S.). It’s a two-year commitment in our new place, after which I can transfer to somewhere closer to home (provided we don’t decide to stay). A bit nerve-wracking, but exciting at the same time.
Shit. Two years ain’t nothing.
Although I here they got actual winters back east. Good luck. Kick ass.
Yeah–I’ve done two years in a third world country (Guatemala), and three years in rural Japan. 2 years in a random US state is nothin’.
Double-take … wasn’t this the California job? Was that just the interview?
Well, the company’s based out of Southern Cal, so that’s where I interviewed. And there’s a chance I’ll be placed somewhere in California, especially now that they know my preference. But I go where the job is, so if there’s nothing in California, I’ll have to wait a couple years before I end up there.
you may even be able to go to an A’s game.
Fuck yeah
Seriously! It’s a great opportunity.
Congratulations!
Thanks, and go As.
Thank you!
right on.
Congratulations!!!
(still afraid)
Nah, I’ll probably be so busy that I won’t be able to edit all your comments.
Sa-weet! Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
Aw, shucks. I’m just glad to finally transition into career-mode.
woot woot!
Yuppi-hey!
So the fact that some of us are getting better jobs and some of us are getting jobs is a really good sign, right?
…does
****Toonces NOT losing his job have anything to do with a stronger economy? He’s Toonces, dammit!
(And I’d suspect blackmail, not the economy.)
better?
I’d suspect that Blez actually likes him (and would have trouble getting the same quality of work for the same cost)
yup. I’d suspect it, too.
(this)
I know Blez likes him. And I’ll give Toonces his due… he knows how to clear out a bar.
When I read his first post in there I could hear the needle scratching the record in my head and could see everyone staring and walking out..
Beane liked Geren too. It helps but it’s not enough when it comes to money.
slf started a new job wednesday
Go on…
same shit different organization. (SLF=Special Lady Friend). Death penalty appeals
That’s tough stuff. Rewarding, I’m sure, if you’re opposed to the death penalty in all cases but difficult difficult work.
I wish her luck.
You mean when people get parking tickets she appeals for the death penalty?
Heh. That’s such a Bed joke…
OOOOOOOOOOOO! Get her set up, and I will come work tirelessly with her. That’s a hugehugehuge thing for me. HUGE. The biggest.
Appeals or Special Lady Friends?
appeals. strongly opposed to the death penalty.
..but I like special lady friends, too. I even like those silly men who dress like women.
lay off the lady friend
The Bloom wants what the Bloom wants, Ed. It can not be stopped.
…and stay away from my lady friend!
Fair enough. You should give Ed’s SLF a hand then. Good to do something you’re passionate about. Well, usually it’s is at least. In this case, that’s a tough one from the emotional investment standpoint.
