Freeking Bad 88

In this blog, first you get the leenks, then you get the sausages, then you get the kraut.

Sweet Ba’al Almighty, you should know you’ve broken bad when you’ve lost FF. Welcome one and all. Please note the absence of rules. And please for the love of Bill King, start some threads on your own.

Who’s our best candidate for this? I’d like to see Bloom and DFA as a Badger/Skinny Pete duo.

    Dinner here last night. FKin excellent. Had the German charcuterie plate (with extra cornichons for JP), the beet salad, racamoni & cheese, and the spuntino, with a glass of this.

      Dinner here last night (because here was tragically full).

      Pizza tartufo (mozzarella, parmigiano, mushroom & black truffle) was great, but all the restaurants on Smith Street seem to have gone cash-only, which is tough when the bill for a large family dinner can easily exceed the daily ATM limit. Much better than the previous night here though, when the penne with feta and olives came complete with rogue sausage.

      Hard to think of any teams right now that are in the prospect-trading mood and for whom Suzuki would be an upgrade. Probably right to wait and hope for an early-season injury or a surprise contender with a lousy backstop.

          you work for a(n) RDA?

          after college i did in orange county. i did what i now would call community organizing, but the guys desk i took over was the rfp/contract guy for multi unit rehab.I had met him but suddenly he was gone and it wasnt clear to me whether he quit or gotten fired. but when i found a paperclipped pack of about 50 personal bank deposit slips in amounts from $300-$1000 cash I kinda figured it out on my own.

          I have $5. No I don\'t.
          • FreeSeatUpgrade Dec 29,2011 4:13 pm || Up

            No, but I work for a govt body, and redevelopment dollars directly or indirectly pay for portions of all kinds of stuff…all kinds of state and fed grant matches, multi-jurisdictional planning bodies, transit, schools, cops (and that flexibility is one of the stronger critiques of redevelopment). It’s almost impossible to predict how everything will shake out between the end ReD funding and the ostensible partial replacement back from the state. It’s that kind of ripple effect which could screw me, but who the hell knows. Mostly I get by through being competent and indispensable.

            I think at least 5-6 of us FK regulars (pre-refugee crisis) are govt employed or funded to some degree.

      My understanding is that this court decision kills VC dead. The $250M bragged about by Baseball Oakland was RDA money which is now prime for picking by the state. I suppose Coliseum City is still alive to some extent, although I think they were counting on the RDA money to get that project going as well. As for San Jose, they spun off the property in the Diridon area into a separate agency which may or may not be at jeopardy here (expect another lawsuit). Assuming Selugworth pulls his thumb out of his ass and makes a positive decision regarding SJ, SJ can get past this by then having Wolff purchase the land in the Diridon agency’s bank (which he has an option on), then have Wolff buy out the remaining two parcels, etc. Obviously, the biggest obstacle will be to get Bud to actually make a decision.

      • FreeSeatUpgrade Dec 29,2011 3:31 pm || Up

        San Jose did mostly remove its plans from the threat of this decision. And the transfer of property to SJDDA is probably safe, since I’m guessing the state will not pursue a couple of dozen separate court actions against the many localities who took steps to shelter ReD assets thusly over the last 12 months.

        But since the City of San Jose is, as has been observed, even more broke than Oakland, the ballpark plan now hinges entirely on Wolffish buying the remaining parcels, which is no small matter…the SJ-owned ones the A’s have an option on for a well-below-market price will be a harder sell for the SJ voters, given their broke-assedness. AT&T-can now be even more hardcore about the parcel it owns. And Wolffish also need to pay for the city infrastructure improvements, the price tag for which is not only climbing, but is also near certain to expand, and possibly by a whole lot, as a result of the EIR litigation and likely new traffic mitigations which will be required.

    Is there a guided tour or other breakdown of how this site navigates? I see there are various categories for posts at the top, but I have no idea what they mean. I’m sure I could figure it out if I spent a bunch of time on it, but that would take away from other valuable pastimes, such as farting and drinking beer.

    I am interested in contributing. I used to contribute to (insert euphemism here), albeit in various small ways.

    • ptbnl Dec 29,2011 10:48 pm || Up

      The basic mechanics are here.

      There are categories, but it’s more like a rolling DLD-ish thing. Typically traffic hasn’t been heavy enough to make subdivisions strictly necessary, though some have evolved roles as spoiler alerts for current tv series (mainly Breaking Bad).

      If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.

    • FreeSeatUpgrade Dec 29,2011 11:14 pm || Up

      “The Grill” probably constitutes like 50% of all posts, our brand of DLD. During the season there’ve usually been daily game threads. Maybe 10-15% of posts are A’s subject-specific, like trades and rosters (often categorized as “groverbaiting” and “slusterbation”), and Ballparked in Neutral (self-expl) and ass-threads. Then there’s whatever else…FKwiz are quizzes, baseball quizzes usually by ptbnl or whatever salb’s calling himself today. F(il)K are the old song/play/book re-writings you remember from the olden days. I do not know what F(il)K actually stands for. f(k) is the serious stat analyses during which Bloom and I pass notes and make googly eyes at each other.

      Free Vents are our tailgate and party planning discussions. KOTD (Kraut of the Day) is for discussion of actual fermentation and pickling and the products thereof. POLLO LIBRE are TV-related threads…Breaking Bad, and we’ve just begun under Bloom’s auspices a variant on a book club where some of us re/watch and discuss an episode of the series Deadwood. A Salmagundi is a weekend multipurpose thread, Grill plus Gamethread plus.

      As ptbnl (née green star oakland) says, though, the categories have to date been as malleable as anyone wants them to be, and our relatively cozy numbers have made distinctions less important. What any of it evolves into is of course TBD.

          Cool.

          And always feel free to start a discussion you’re interested in. You’ll find zero criticism and (at absolute worst) I might tweak the categories.

          I ask – but don’t require – that people be careful with new category creation because there is limited real estate to list ’em. At one point we had like 15 one-off categories.

      • sslinger Dec 30,2011 12:05 am || Up

        A very succinct synopsis, thanks FSU. I think you’ll find that we’re all pretty much willing to discuss any topic that comes about. As FSU says, 10-15% A’s specific and maybe 30-35% baseball, lots of politics, some religion, and general silliness. As much as we can be considered a sausage-fest due to the composition of the members, I don’t think the discussions are particularly salacious. Especially in comparison to dinners with my daughters.

        • ptbnl Dec 30,2011 12:09 am || Up

          And in re sausage-festivity, there’s nowt as queer (friendly) as F(ol)K.
