    1 I have been quite surprised how little traction the Nightengale report got. Usually with something like that there is a lot more confirmation by sources from other reporters after… not so much here.

    2. Thank god. But this is still concerning:

    In addition, Cespedes is believed to want a four-year deal, too short for the A’s purposes when the team hopes to move into a new stadium in three years, or a 10-year deal, which is too lengthy.

    Basically, this is wrong. Unless he is requiring a no arbitration after 4 years clause in his contract, which no one has reported, you get him for 6 years of control.

      Either Selig has tightened down on all parties with an iron grip or more likely it’s just hot air and the A’s end of season campaign to try to draw national interest in their situation is “working.”

      • FreeSeatUpgrade Dec 28,2011 9:57 am || Up

        The feeling in the Giants’ camp is that the A’s think if they just keep saying they’re optimistic about a new stadium, it will happen.

        I do think the A’s launched a PR strategy in September along these lines, like a market tout talking up a a stock he’s already invested in to up it’s value. But I don’t think it was just based on wishful thinking, but rather a tacit or possibly explicit set of new expectations Wolff got from Selig (like taking land control issues out of the scope of the redevelopment lawsuit, which they’ve done). I’m still expecting MLB to let the A’s go south (ahem) sometime this winter.

          I’m not 100% sold on the tacit/explicit approval just yet. I think it’s a product of their PR campaign where the more it gets thrown around, the more people think it’s true, the more convoluted and full of mines MLB will have to walk through if they turn them down. I’m expecting the decision this winter as well, but I also won’t be the least bit surprised if come opening day we’ve heard nada from Selig.

          • jeepers Dec 28,2011 12:31 pm || Up

            Selig desperately wants the decision to be made for him, somehow. I’m guessing he’s hoping for one of two things:

            1) The A’s twist in the wind for long enough – and collecting enough revenue sharing checks – that all the other owners (except the Giants) get motivated to do something about it.

            2) Wolff gives up and a magical fairy builds in Oakland.

            I don’t think Selig himself is pro- or anti-San Jose. He’s pro-path of least resistance.

            • dmoas Dec 28,2011 12:35 pm || Up

              I’d agree with that. Hell, it wouldn’t be surprising to me if he passed the mess off to the next guy since he’s supposedly retiring at the end of the year.

              • YonYonson Dec 28,2011 12:57 pm || Up

                Yup. I see that happening. It’s more of a game of chicken, with both sides seeing who takes the risk. No current parties probably will.

                  Hence the reason why it’s seeing unsourced “leaks” and immediate retractions. The more MLB is asked about it, the more people catch on to something funky going on. It won’t, in itself, force a move of any sort, but it will shine an ugly light on MLB that they’d prefer not to be there. What the situation really needs is an “FU berating Geren” like move.

      I think international players can get a clause written into their contract earning them FA rights in less than 4 years. IIRC Matsui had something like that in his first contract with the Yankees.

      Cots.

      Hideki Matsui dh-of
      1 year/$4.25M (2011)
      1 year/$4.25M (2011)
      signed by Oakland as a free agent 12/14/10
      performance bonuses
      1 year/$6M (2010)
      signed by LA Angels as a free agent 12/16/09

      4 years/$52M (2006-09)
      signed extension with NY Yankees as a free agent 11/05
      06-09:$13M annually
      3 years/$21M (2003-05)
      signed by NY Yankees as a free agent 12/02
      03:$6M, 04:$7M, 05:$8M
      $1.5M in performance bonuses
      deal requires Yankees to sign Matsui to extension by Nov. 11, 2005, or release him

      1 year/$4.7M (2002)
      signed by Yomiuri of Japan’s Central League 12/01
      agent: Arn Tellem
      ML service: 9.000

        Right… Its been done with Japanese players but not with Cubans IIRC. Akinori Iwamura had that kinda clause.

    Highest and best use of Stark. Though the A’s only get this:

    Incredibly, the two starters in June 28’s White Sox-Rockies game — Gavin Floyd and Jason Hammel — had exactly the same pitching line (7-6-2-2-2-0). That’s a feat so rare, it had happened only once in the previous 30 years. So, naturally, it took only nine weeks until it happened again — with Ubaldo Jimenez and Rich Harden spinning off dueling 6-6-3-3-2-6 lines in an Indians-A’s game.

              Even weirder is that they have a Krispy Kreme about 2 or 3 blocks away FURTHER into the industrial area where there’s nothing out there. But you’re right, it’s in a sort of weird place. It’s just on the edge over where the city stops and the industry starts.
