That tale reads a lot like Being There, if Chauncey Bailey had just taken the one next little step to “give birth to more iniquitous rulers like himself, and to be the preceder of the Antichrist, eventually bringing about the end of the world.”
That is fantastic.
Mrs llama had to point out to me that this was Merry Portal Christmas. Now I get it.

LETS GO FALCONS!
Thanks, and go As.
amen
I really doubt you have anything to worry about, even if the Aints win this game.
It would be nice for the Falcons to win so that SF can rest guys for the 2nd half against the Lambs, and maybe let Kaepernick get some real live playing time
Thanks, and go As.
I suspect the niners could start Kaepernick next Sunday and win without breaking a sweat. But yeah, it would certainly be to their benefit to go into that game not having to give a rat’s ass about the outcome.
How sold are they on Bradford? Just looking, wouldn’t a 49er win give the Rams the first pick in the draft?
No, Indy still gets #1 if they lose next week.
Also, they’ve payed Bradford way too much to let him go. They’ll probably go for Justin Blackmon to actually give him someone to throw to.
Thanks, and go As.
I wouldn’t count on Indy to lose next week. You’re probably right about Bradford, but it also adds a potential trade wrinkle there. Knowing they don’t need Luck, they could trade down and make a potential killing off it.
Agreed, but to be able to rest any player for whom it would benefit, is a very nice manner in which to end the season.

… And speaking of the Ass who corrupts society from top to bottom …
When in Portland you need donuts with your coffee.
Meesus Monkeyball might enjoy their “Cock-N-Balls”:
With nutty good flavor!
And yes, it is creme-filled.
Just drove by there!
Ohhhh Voodoo donuts.
I really doubt they’ve been locally owned since 200.
Year 200 in the Hipster Calendar.
Five Guys: burgers far better than expected (certainly better quality beef than InO), fries far worse than expected. And no shakes; JP highly disappointed. Also, the whole “it’s just the *basics*, brah!” decor is irritating.
Also also: WTF is with the quasi-premium pricing?
i tried it for the first time today too. yep, the meat is superior. didn’t mind the fries. i’ll go back. but it can’t replace the flavor of InO that’s ingrained in my southern-california subconscious. animal style sauce has been flowing through my veins since about ’86…
also trying for the first time today: posting on FK. hello!
You’re in; future comments will post immediately. Welcome.
HELL YES!!!!!!
Thanks, and go As.
don’t go thinking i migrated because of you. i just heard there were no damn subject lines to worry about over here… ;)
saves you 40 tab, tabs a day
The “why” isn’t important.
Thanks, and go As.
(yes it is)
subject lines rule!
Me.
In N Out is the mad note, yo. FK all five of those dudes.
Welcome, AV.
bienvenido, amigo
Yay!
Hello from Kay!
I’m SPWC over here, like the old old country, not G_S, like the old country.
Certainly not worth going out of my way for.
Welcome!
Welcome! Great to have some new (old) names here.
Hey, AV!
you’re the only one i’m not immediately placing. have we met? nice to meet you now if not.
You probably know me better by this name… (I just figured out how to change this stuff)
I think he’s JLaff.
Well holy biscuits that’s great.
Did he bring the witch?
Nope. She can come here on her own accord.
(And no, I’m not leaving AN, I’m just going to try to be a little more active here. I’ve commented sparingly in the past.)
Welcome.
For some reason some more of your comments were trapped in moderation, but hopefully that ends now.
Probably because I changed my public username, maybe? When I was digging around to find how to add a sig and avatar, I saw that option.
Thanks for changing that. It’s certainly not necessary to have the same username here as in the old country, e.g. spwc, but given our habit of using “mb”, “nm”, “LB” and…”JL”, the other name made me think a little harder than I wanted to.
Yeah, I changed it to avoid that kind of confusion, too. Wasn’t thinking of the other JL when I first registered for the site.
oh! hi!!!
Ive been working on her.
BOOBIES
glad to see you all, new coutry-ers, old country-ers with new names, and dual citizens!
I will admit it hasn’t traveled to the west coast as well as it could have. I’m surprised you feel that way about the fries. What FF chain does better?
Also, free peanuts!
Might sound crass, but Mcdonalds has great FF fries.
Last time I had Burger King, the fries were remarkably good.
Thanks, and go As.
Their old meat ones were great. Now they’re just salt licks.
Still the best around, imo. Gotta get In-N-Out’s twice-fried, but even then they can’t compare.
Never had twice-fried.
Can’t stand McDonald’s fries.
My totally arbitrary fast-food fry rankings:
1. Jack in the Box Curly Fries
2. Nation’s
3. Wendy’s
4. Carl’s Jr. Criss-cut
5. In-N-Out
1. Endorsed.
Yep, fries well done is the phrase they’re looking for.
My one-year hiatus from fast food ends Sunday. I’ll go to InO and ask for fries well done.
get whole grilled onions on the burger, too.
Thanks, and go As.
Peanut-allergic friends refer to 5G as the danger zone. You inhale ’em just by walking in.
True. Not conducive to that health issue at all.
Why didn’t you go to burgerville?
Out late, raining, coming from Tigard — just went with ease/convenience.
Had biscuits & gravy at the cafe next to Space Monkey yesterday. Quite good. Probably going to try a couple other places with friends the rest of the week.
Any recos? (After reading Yelp rvws, I am *not* going to Pok Pok.)
If you’re up in NE, Tin Shed for breakfast.
I’m usually in the brewpubs every night when I’m up there.
Space Monkey looks like its Southeast so I’ll limit it to a few favorites in that area.
Lucky Labrador on SE Hawthorne at 9th. Great beer, limited sandwich/soup/salads food menu. Would be a good light lunch place. Fun in summer when people bring their dogs and sit out at the picnic tables in back but that’s not an option now.
Hopworks Urban Brewery at 2944 SE Powell. Bicycle-oriented, sustainable/organic. I think JP would like that place.
A nice little neighborhood place is the Hedge House at 3412 SE Division. That would be a little cramped without the outdoor seating and probably wouldn’t be as kid-friendly as the other two.
Both of these options are good in terms of SE pubs. The Green Dragon is over that way and pretty good too though they don’t brew there.
Montage: Great Mac and Cheese under the Morrison Bridge
Le Pigeon: New American on Burnside and 4th… pretty good on the more expensive side
The Detour 31st and Division great breakfast
This is timely. (I haven’t actually seen the show, but it sounds amusing. “We can pickle that!”)
The burger is just not all that good for the price you pay. Fuck Five Guys.
I don’t wanna fuck one guy let alone five! [runs away]
You’re 99995 short
You’ve increased my workload a hundredfold.
Told ya the fries sucked.
I wouldn’t go that far. Theyre better than InO, anyway. Just not all that good.
Oh that cant be good InO’s fries are inedible.
I liked it better than InO. I know. Sue me. I can’t remember the fries, though. It’s been a couple years. I like the peanuts and that I can have A1 as a topping. I think my little corner of the world is getting a 5 Guys in 2012.
Granted, for the price, I’ll take InO vs. 5 Guys straight up.
Now that InO has expanded to Utah, we eat there about once every other week. We can eat as a family (1 animal style hamburger each for me and the wife ; 1 cheeseburger cut in half for the girls, 2 orders of fries, 4 waters) for under $10. I’ve heard I couldn’t make it out of 5 Guys myself for less than 8 or 9 bucks. They have one out here, but I’ve yet to 9-dollars-want a hamburger-based meal.
I’ve heard that The Habit (which I’ve seen in Sacramento) and Smashburger (which I’ve seen in Utah and California) are good as well. Any opinions on either of those?
I’ve eaten at 5 Guys once – found it overpriced and overrated. I liked Nations when I was living in Davis, but they don’t have any here in the south bay.
I love drk.
Wait, InO is in Utah now? Sell outs!
I heard rumors that they wouldn’t come here because the evangelical owners hated Mormons. That could be entirely untrue or irrelevant.
Probably like dollars more than they do (or, in fact, don’t) hate Mormons. Does that issue go both ways (i.e. are there mormons who would avoid InO for the same reason)?
My thoughts exactly.
InO is pretty much universally loved by Utahns and Mormons–at least all those I’ve talked to.
Good deal. Thanks.
Before your post, I had considered joking that they had gone there to try to convert the natives to christianity, but decided against it. (For the record, I have no god in this fight.)
I’da laughed.
(asvd)
The Habit is pretty good and relatively inexpensive. They also have the option of onion rings which I’m a fan of. You can get bacon and avocado on your burger for an $1 I believe.
an extra*
Val’s in Hayward, ftw. As a bonus, the A’s used to always eat here in the 90s.
The Habit is very good, especially for the price. Smashburger wasn’t nearly as good.
Well, you enjoy that, then.
Should I get one of these for JP to play with?
As much as I hate rooting for the Walmarts of the world, I really think this is going to be how we solve our primary care cost issue.
1) Why is one $21 bar so much bigger than the other?
2) I’d be interested to see a breakout of HMO vs. PPO. My (not necessarily well informed) sense is that places like Kaiser do better on average on the cost/quality tradeoff.
3) It seems like there’s still a lot of improvement needed in making standardized and portable electronic medical records. As they indicate at the end of your article, that will really help these type of clinics fit into the health care system. It may also be part of the advantage that HMOs have now.
The only thing I could figure was that the dollars were the pharmacy cost (no way $/episode at an ER is $26).
Oh, good point. Though that makes it a pretty crappy infographic.
Sure, but a tease that got at least you to read the article.
I agree with Gore about where the Niners turned their shit around, but I think the defining moment was the Smith strip. They’d battled back to late leads before (though rarely after as ugly a first half), but last season the Eagles would have absolutely gotten the time-expiring game-winning FG.
DFWAS (for the new folks: I like to try to limit my utter despair in links to one a day–not always with success–and call it “Despair For We Are Stupid”).
Every list deserves a Rickey:
New tenant on my work desk (the other guys are on display in my home office).
You speak Japanese and Spanish? Awesome.
Excellent! But shouldn’t the nameplate read: ç§ãŒæ—¥æœ¬èªžã‚’話ã™
Seriously. They wouldn’t let me get it in Japanese because they can’t confirm that the characters mean what I say they mean. Chinese and Spanish are fine, but not Japanese (for some reason).
Oh goodness. There’s no one else at WF who reads Japanese whom they could run it by? What I read on that plate is, “At WF we treat our Japanese-speaking customers differently than we treat our Spanish-speaking customers” and that’s not a very good message for a big corporation to send.
With you 100%. I was bummed when I found out I was limited to English on the Japanese tag.
In defense of WF, they outsource the creation of name plates to a small third party imprinting company, which can’t verify the Japanese. But it wouldn’t be hard for WF to send them a list of approved “I speak X” phrases.
On a somewhat related note, I’m flying out to California tonight for an interview for that job I talked about a few weeks ago. Interview’s tomorrow.
Good luck!
good luck man!
Thanks! I’m excited and nervous, because it could be a really good career move.
We’d love you have you back in region.
I’m sorry I stole the thunder from the bobbleheads, which are great. That picture just had Sore Thumb Syndrome.
You’ve made it pretty clear that your heart will never be at WF or Chase. That would be great if you could land somewhere you could be truly dedicated and at the same time get the right salary and benefits for your family. So yes, good luck!
Good luck, that could mean trips to a tailgate
That got me too.
!!!
You need a placard on the right that reads:
I wondered if this thing still worked.
Nope. Doesn’t work.
Blame the chief administrator1
True, I hacked the site. Get ready for an endless loop of Jillian Michaels 30-minute shred informercials.
FK is gonna be rickrolled.
Never gonna sit you up
Never gonna crunch you down
Never gonna take my sports bra
And hurt you
This is just a front. The super-secret site is the one salb referred to in the final post on freekraut.wordpress.com.
Based on the other recent posts, I’d say this place was more a back than a front.
Good to see ya, hombre.
Same to you, good sir.
Work is to be avoided if at all possible.
You should set your sig-line to “**** can pretty much kiss my ass” – PECOTA
IIRC correctly, that was about projections for Sean Gallagher.
Score one for PECOTA.
Touché. I like my new signature better, anyway.
welcome back!
RIP, Sanjiv Handa.
Re The Art of Fielding (review linked here):
I thought the book was a little slow at the start but once the signature event mentioned in the article happens it takes off. The chapters are short, the author focuses on an interaction between a couple of the characters for a few pages then moves on. So it’s definitely recreational/escapist reading but that’s what I enjoy. I don’t know about that HBO series idea but it would make a great movie and that’s the way I’m playing it in my mind as I read.
The gay storyline is significant but it shouldn’t turn away anybody here at the Sausagefest. There’s plenty of baseball and plenty of heterosexuality to keep everyone engaged.
Having said all that…I’m about 3/4 of the way through it and look forward to seeing how the author ties up all the various subplots.
Thanks for the review! I’ve got it on hold at the BPL, but there are 65 holds, so it may be a while.
I don’t keep shelves of books except for references like hiking guides. If you want my copy after I’m done in the next day or so, we can add this to the FK circulation library; e-mail your address to me at gonealookin at the geemail.
Oooh–me likey! Sending email now. Thanks!
It arrived–thank you!! Will read and then re-post to circulate to another interested taker.
I bought it based on Soaker’s live-review; I’m about halfway through it.
So. Wi-Fi on a plane. Didn’t know this was possible.

Thanks, and go As.
DAMN AIRLINES WON’T PROVIDE PLUGS
You’re enough taller than I am that I hadn’t noticed you were thinning on top, too.
Bleg:
We are going up to Tahoe tomorrow (north side), and discovered that Mrs. N’ll need a new coat. Are there fair places up there or should we be stopping on the way?
Where I am (Carson City area) it got as low as +3 last week but for the next 7 days the lowest forecast low temperature I’m seeing is +25, with no chance of any significant snow. The lake won’t get any colder than that. Your Bay Area attire with an extra layer should be good enough.
The direct answer to your question is, if you want a good ski coat, don’t try to buy it at the lake, stop at an REI along the way.
Thanks.
My expectation is we’ll do a day skiing the fake snow since we are up there, so she might as well get the next good coat. I’ve also heard there are some neat places to go skating.
Any winter-appropriate hikes you’d recommend in the half-day range?
There’s been so little snow, all trails are open. You can hike pretty much anywhere you would in the summer, though you might hit some ice on north-facing slopes. The caveat is, the wind can start blowing like crazy as you get up toward the ridges and even though the actual temp might not be bad the wind chill gets ridiculous.
North shore, hmmm…if you’ve never walked along the Flume Trail the views are spectacular. You can start that from the old Ponderosa Ranch at the east end of Incline Village. The climb to it is a strenuous hour but once you get up there the Flume Trail itself is level for several miles; just go as far as you want then turn back.
That sounds like the right kind of thing. Thanks!
AWESOME rec.
We absolutely loved it up there. Exactly what we were looking for.
You’re welcome. I was concerned the grind up Tunnel Creek Road might have been too strenuous a recommendation. But yes, once on that level stretch I love the views. Ordinarily that should have been under a few feet of snow at this time of year but as you saw this hasn’t been an average Nov.-Dec. The computers are suggesting that winter finally hits in the second week of Jan.
As long as it doesn’t hit wet and warm and constant, I’m happy to see it.
No Blood For Oil!No Flood For Water! There is no milkshake, Eli.
Then I’m out.
[sigh]
The milkshake brings me to the yard. Particularly a good mint one, but chocolate or strawberry will suffice.
I prefer vanilla. baby.
At least we won’t have to fight over it.
true…
Will you teach me, or do you have to charge?
Not much to it. Put milk and icecream into blender, blend.
