- RIP Ken Russell. His run of films in the early ’70s really is incredible. GkGK’s appreciation.
- You know, for kids! (I had no idea it was invented in SF.)
- I’m frankly surprised MLBAM let me do this:
- What Duncan Black said
- Jed Rakoff for human of the year

#3 is viral material. Good stuff.
Was that what was responsible for your food poisoning?
I’m rethinking the food poisoning theory now that I’m still sick 5 days later. Some really fast working flu virus is what we’re thinking now.
FDA says salmonellosis can last 4-7 days. Maybe something got cross-contaminated from the raw poultry.
Influenza doesn’t usually produce the symptoms you mentioned in adults.
In any case, I hope you all feel better soon.
Cross contamination is probably the only way that yams can make you feel that sick
Iunno. I would think that contaminated soil still clinging to the yams could do it.
Im sure it could but then hella people would be sick.
Even though yams are usually boiled & skinned?
(Aren’t they? Or is that just my family?)
Washed, skinned and steamed.
Or, as I prefer it, covered in olive oil, wrapped in foil, and grilled on the bbq.
That grilled with olive oil thing sounds fantastic…
It is. Can’t overcook either; more time on bbq means squishy soft = delicious.
That’s how they cook sweet potatoes in Japan–yaki imo. They’re quite delicious.
I like to grill most any kind of potato(e).
I have a gas grill, so sometimes if I’m cooking fish or thin steak, the grill will only be on for 10-15 minutes total. In those circumstances, I’ll nuke the potato(e) 75-80% of the way and finish it off on the grill without foil, turning often to roast the skin evenly.
If there was contaminated soil on a single yam that was in the batch (altho DFA is right, if there was contaminated soil, it’d be more than just Clan Leroy that was sick), that soil could touch/contaminate hands/cutting surfaces/knives/pots/etc. despite what was done to the yams themselves. The yams would be the vector for entry into the household, but not necessarily the gut.
Well it is likely that if the soil contaminated the family, everyone, not just those who ate the yams would be sick, since the hands/surfaces/utensils were probably shared.
I’ve now transitioned from nausea/diarrhea to sore throat/sinus congestion and body aches.
This all sounds awful. I hope you can get rest and not have to chase the anklebiters and get them food and such.
The family’s all feeling mostly better, but I’m still sick. I’d be resting if I weren’t out of PTO (I started so late in the year that I only get 12 hours outside of holidays until the end of the year) and the policy for missed time without pay is to write you up (what a FKing ridiculous policy).
Best option now. Infect the office! Thatll show them.
OCCUPY THEIR IMMUNE SYSTEMS
I’m making sure to cough and shake hands as much as I can.
Just got back from the doctor. Ear infection + tonsillitis = the worst sore throat I’ve ever had. I was wearing a surgical mask to keep from infecting others, when a beat up car with some trashy kids pulled up and started making fun of me by pointing and fake-coughing. Because me trying to keep others from getting what I have is so hilarious.
You’ll get the last laugh when teens pick it up as a “cool” trend.
/Japan
Heh.
Dallas Braden really needs an offseason hobby
Shoulda ripped off that mask, gone over, and coughed in their window.
Yeah. Should’a told’em you just gave them Hepatitis Q and they’ll all be dead before they’re old enough to drink.
I actually did think about that.
That is exactly the kind of thing that I would think to do 0.2 seconds after the kids laughed at me, and then decided not to 0.2 seconds after that. I wish I could suppress that second reaction.
2.
I wonder if they thought it would help them get drunk faster.
Today’s DFWAS link is only quasi-political. And–I assume–non-controversial.

That’s a fucked-up voting system
It is. It essentially never matters (in that the person with the most votes has won all but a couple of times), but it’s not right.
Well, it also has a big impact on where money is spent in the campaign, what pet projects are emphasized and who gets ore information about the candidates.
In my view, its worse for policy than it is for the horse race.
I’m not so sure that would change though. If it were popular vote, you’d still spend a lot more time and effort in the population centers (which usually align with electoral voting) simply based on an attempt to maximize your dollar/time per popular vote ratio. Would you rather spend a month in the Midwest kicking up a million votes or spend an hour and a fraction of the cost in the heart of NYC for a million votes?
But that’s just it: they currently do the former.
Right…
Whoops.
What I meant to say is that campaigns currently spend an inordinate amount of time catering to Iowa farmers, and not nearly enough time on issues that effect cities (and most citizens).
Also, the GOP would campaign in California (while Democrats would campaign in Texas) because a marginal vote is a marginal vote.
Not so sure about that. A marginal vote may be a marginal vote, but not all marginal votes cost the same. Most of their focus would likely be in the middle (politically speaking) states trying to sway the mass area that could go either way and much less focus on their particular “golden” states where they expect to win lots of votes whether they go their or not. So really, not much different from now.
The more I think about it, the more a popular vote would actually help a third party though. It would make gaining a grass roots effort easier since they wouldn’t have to focus on winning states. So in that context (and one of simple fairness) it should be popular vote either way.
I disagree with that (winning “area” wouldn’t matter at all), but the only way we’ll find out is if enough states pass popular vote laws.
The downside, though, is that in a close election a recount would be a nightmare. IMO we need to perfect electronic voting first.
And the great thing with electronic voting is that you know the result before polling day.
Oh …
Not sure what you mean.
Which part?
On the first part, I think candidates would stop caring immediately about farm policy because there aren’t any farmers. In other words, rural voters are extremely overcounted under our system. They wouldn’t be then.
On the second part, if the election overall is close, EVERY vote would need to be recounted. Now, only certain states are likely to be close.
I never said anything about rural voters. Just the bigger midwest areas/cities that tend to lean towards the middle. All the focus would be on trying to get the fence sitters to swing their way. A Dem won’t go to Texas because the number of votes they might gain would be insignificant compared to state that has more voters that haven’t chosen a side.
the various positions on the left right continuum will not change, but in recent times candidates have fallen overthem selves promising bad legislation in order to get 50% +1 in Iowa, Penn, FLA etc.
There are a lot more Republicans in CA than there are in Midwest areas(non-Chicago edition). It’s just that they currently don’t matter.
Yeah, the big focus (for each party) would be on getting out huge numbers in the areas where they know they have concentrations of voters. When we campaigned in CO, a swing state in ’08, we were doing GOTV in Boulder, the liberal bastion. It was more about getting their votes in than getting fence-sitters to switch.
Exactly right. Ethanol, for example.
This is the way we should conduct national elections.
The whole Electoral College issue aside, the part that I find fucked up is that the representation is based on overall population, not the voting eligible part of it.
Totally! Because most people who wear these are conservatives!
It was a slavery thing.
Do non-registered voters count as less than human still?
Depends on which party you ask.
Most beautiful engineering and machining video you’ll see today: 12 cylinder engine which fits in your palm.
I gotcher palm-sized 12-cylinder engine right here, bub.
Thing of beauty
My dad used to be good enough to do something like that. He built a working Chevy V-8 replica at a slightly larger scale, as well as a bunch of small steam and Stirling engines.
I work with a lot of precision engineers, machinists, and technicians and the type of stuff that they can do blows my mind. They routinely place a quarter-million dollar instrument about 20 microns away from certain machine death and do so without blinking. I once tried to have one of the technicians teach me how to do it and I was a disaster. It really is an art.
Holy crap, Keller wrote something not stupid.
Helen?
Yikes.
WTF
Dependent clause. They did sign Jose Tabata to cover his arbi years to around $15M.
I was focused less on the comparator than on the simple fact of 8 digits for Barmes.
along with the $5M for Barajas, looks like someone is supposed to spend money this Christmas.
OOOooooh!!! Ooooooh!!! Spend it on me!!!

Reasonable, but neither fair nor adequate
Right. The only bad part of that story is the “and non-bankers need to feel pain” part.
I just came across these t-shirts on the generic mlb site – $37 each, but 50% off a 2nd one. Anyone want a large one half price?
Yes
Done.
Now you need to find one with “Oakland” on front of it.
http://shop.mlb.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3385784
Can I have $215?
Yes, your t-shirt option corrects the “I claim to be the 99% yet I wear a jersey affordable by the 1%” dichotomy of my initial selection.
Sadly, the photos seem to have disappeared from the FSU-in-law’s DIY diary from years back.
Is ** no longer segregating up favorite posts?
There are no favorite posts to segregate.
Yeah, that was what I was getting at.
Aside from The Lounge, which I’m at least 75% responsible for, regardless of what ANY motherfker says, ** is dead this off-season.
Only ’cause the A’s have been struggling for so long…
I wonder if they’re missing all the meta now.
No, the meta has migrated to the lounge, now that Pam’s not there to throw a shitfit every time it does.
Pam’s gone?
Huh.
Banned?
bored more like.
bored and rarely there.
kinda like me.
however, I admit that I lurk the lounge sometimes to see what the ladies are talking to Bed about.
It was really annoying to see Pam on the side of the ** establishment. I went to elementary and high school with her and she is great in real life.
So I guess you’ve gotten over getting screwed in the spelling bee.
I’m not known to hold grudges, now am I?
I have had a different experience.
Maybe you should learn how to spell.
I’ve met her a few times and I like her just fine.
She’s just anti-meta, that’s all.
I like her.
I like her, too.
Shes not anti meta, shes anti meta that she doesn’t like.
Shes perfectly pleasant as a person tho.
It’s noon on the West coast and ** has a new FP post with ZERO comments.
Aha! I finally figured it out — Lew’s plan in decimating the fanbase was a plan to destroy ** all along!
Nah.
Blez kick started that plan when he chose **** to replace him.
Unless **** does have contacts high inside the A’s organization, and he was placed at ** as a sleeper agent!

Deeevious!
Wasn’t it 2006 or after when he took over…?
Its 430 and there are 3. I think there have been less than 50 comments all day over there.
Yeah, well, we got 0 comments on today’s grill, so …
We don’t need lots of comments, we all just get it. Also were in here!
You know, I’ve never known where to find the lounge/CT threads. And I’m totally cool with not knowing.
I’ve never known either. Would be interesting to see every once and awhile, but have not been so interested as to find out how to..
And it makes me wonder..I know the powers that be thought there were good reasons to create that and hide it from the world. But now it looks like no one is doing anything on their site. If I was a new person coming on the site would it bother me more to see a bunch of comments and know that some might be a bit ofensive, or to go to a site where I see no one posting..meh whatever, but still.
it was more a clutter thing.
The evolution was people were posting in the recap thread a sort of “live blogging” of the CHris townsend show. People didn’t like 1000 comments in the recap thread about top ten lists and cooking. So, bloom made a “CT thread” onthe front page. that too seemed to much clutter, so it moved to the overflow game threads where the mods put game thread II, III and IV after the game is over.
At the same time, the edict to stop swearing came down from above. after the blowback it was deemed OK to swear and talk politics in the Lounge.
it’s actually not okay to talk politics in the lounge. but we do sometimes.
There’s a button on the front page that says “overflow” something. Click on it and the lounges are there. If you’re interested.
its funny that the only thing worthwhile there is totally hidden

Similarly, JP needs a new A’s cap — anyone want one of these half price ($7!) for their krautling?
The last thing I need is more hat choices. The Children think they are Liberace
I never thought of Lee as a hat man
ok, the queen then
I’m totally getting JP the A’s Candelabra for xmas, though.
No takers?
I’m tempted.
We’re covered, thx
I have no children, that I claimed as Bloom-seed. Therefore, any juvenile hat purchases I would make would be superfluous and creepy.
So this is a yes?

Phoenix Muni is a great location for a ballpark but I see where the City of Phoenix is coming from in not wanting to put money into upgrades. There’s no ballpark-related development, i.e. hotels and restaurants, around the park so I’m sure most A’s fans who make the spring training trip spend lots of money in Scottsdale or Tempe, not so much in Phoenix. The land occupied by the ballpark, auxiliary field, training facility and quite large parking area could probably fetch a nice price now from an office/condo/apartment developer, presumably a lot more in two or three years if the economy has picked up.
Not in PHX that place is ground 0 for the development collapse of the housing market.
Las Vegas is the real Ground Zero. Drive through the outer parts of that place if you want to see some true foreclosure desolation.
The outer parts of the Phoenix metropolitan area suck too, but the proximity of the Phoenix Zoo and the buttes of Papago Park, and being close-in to the center of sprawling Phoenix, make the Phoenix Muni area prime territory for the next phase of commercial/residential development.

So.

Bloom just landed a job. A real job. Something of a career-type thing.
I was just hired as a case manager for drug court here in Sonoma County. Monday through Thursday, 11-8.
I’ve got an office.
Dude. You’re super-mega employed now.
[looks smug]
It was only a matter of time…
[sniffs Don Knotts in “Three’s Company” style]
…before someone recognized my greatness…
So now you’re holding down 3 jobs at once?
I think this will necessitate the elimination of all other jobs. Maybe not, but I think so.
They gave me an office.
!!!
I didn’t tell them I was living in a garage in Richmond this time last year.
I will later. And we will laugh and laugh about it. While sitting in my office.
I’m bringing a futon pad.
You strike me more as someone who needs a beanbag chair in his office.
I have a beanbag just outside my cube.
Occupy Bloom’s office!
Don’t mind if I do!
Does it pay better than the others? Or is this just about the allure of your own office?
office. prestige. officer of the court. babes.
That’s awesome, congratulations! :)
But no more Poppy Baseball Tuesday Nights for you…
…to back out of.
true. I will miss not attending those.
In other, possibly unrelated news (but much more likely to be related), you hold a grudge, young lady.
congrats!
Yay! Congrats!!!
Excelsior!
W00t!! AND an orfice?!
Very cool! Congratulations! Psyched to hear it.
Congrats.
nice, can I start you with “I called bloom, but the voice mail was full and I never got a call back”
yes! You know where I’m going then, don’t you?
I do. You mean Drug Court (capital “D”). Not P36.
All of these guys are in serious need of help. Some are cons, mostly good people. Tough work. I couldn’t do it.
Congrats!
So thats 6 now?
Better Nate than Lever…Congrats.
One of my favorite jokes!
You should be proud of how far you’ve come.

They call me MISTER Bloom!
So, speaking of vocational things, I had a very strange occurrence this morning. Jesus, is that really how you spell occurrence? That looks so wrong.
So anyhow, I have been doing this job with the SED kids for a couple weeks. It’s okay, but it’s also real…nebulous wrt direction. They really want you to form your own path, I guess. The program’s in the process of transitioning to something else (namely a place that really doesn’t do any kind of restraints or takedowns–they’re really rare now), so it’s just kind of…nowhere right now. There hasn’t been a whole lot of direction given me. I’m a good alcoholic, though, I just roll with it and come up with what I do and the kids seem to dig it okay. It’s not rocket science.
And it’s also, in my estimation of things, not really necessary to be so stressed out about anything. Granted, these kids are generally speaking not as emotionally capable of interacting appropriately 24/7, but they’re good kids who want to do good, who almost always respond well to positive prompts, and giving choices and then giving them enough space to actually make the decision. They’re not bad kids. They’re not criminals or drug addicts or alcoholics. They’re various levels of functioning retarded kids who have been physically and/or sexually abused.
So, for two weeks, no real direction, no real feedback, no nothing. A day staff will show up about a half-hour before I crawl out of there. There’s kind of a pass-on, but even that is kind of unstructured and can be detailed, but can also be nothing.
This morning school staff came in about an hour before I left. She micromanaged on this level, “Normally, when we serve breakfast, we have the big cups, not the little cups.” “We like to have the cups filled before they get to the table–it just saves time.” “You wanna put soap in the dish washer? We won’t start it, but it’ll be ready to go when we leave.”
So, at the end, I got this speech about how her and the other staff are like a well-oiled machine and that we need to remain constantly moving (even though 85% of the action is happening in the kitchen/dining area), and that they don’t have time to fuck around in the morning. This is all delivered like the whole reason I’m there is because the company decided to give her sister’s job to me.
And the reason we need to keep constantly moving is because our client base of SIX might, what? I dunno, sell nuclear codes to the Russians with their loser friends from high school. SIX. Three staff. Well-oiled machine. Now, the kids at RHouse were different–higher functioning, less retarded, but also a lot more manipulative and hell-bent on getting loaded. Me and Charles watched a house of 20-22 of them for at least nine months. Maybe a year.
I also witnessed in the three hours training I got to this woman’s standers, one of the school staff in his zest to “control” the situation, completely escalate a kid to the point where they had to take him to a separate place in the house (the OP Room). This situation was COMPLETELY avoidable and could have been even worse. The micromanagement does not work on these kids. It only serves to frustrate them and make them act out.
So. Thank you for letting me vent. I don’t think I’m going back. And I think I’m not going back because of her. Oh, also, um, they make night staff clock in every twenty minutes, which is an affront to me.
Sounds like a shitty environment.
I’m glad you got a better job.
Sounds like more aggravation than it’s worth. What with the office that needs occupying.
I suspect they are accustomed to a lower class of overnight employees than what they got in you.
I’m somewhat convinced that the school staff thought maybe I was one of the clients. A non-compliant one, at that.
My sister was routinely mistaken for a student back when she taught high school. She hated it.
You should get a new job. Preferably one that will give you your own office.
What are you doing now?
Masturbating.
What are you doing now
Why aren’t you clocking in?
If you’re going to make that joke, you need to do it every 20 minutes all day. (Or do a string of them and then go and break FK by back-timing them.)
i tried but i got called into a meeting
one of my favorite euphemisms.
It happens to me a lot at work. One of two varieties: OMG IM GETTING FIRED COME TO MY DISCIPLINARY MEETING! or YOU ARE SITTING THERE IN THE AIRPORT DOING WORK (/fk) I MUST TALK TO YOU ABOUT SOMETHING NOW!
“taking dictation”
(Hence my parenthetic.)
Concept pitch this morning for … IBD/UC. Right. Up. My. Alley.
I’m seeing it now… one of those animated TV commercials…
It’s a lower intestine, but it’s also a clean subway station with pink tile and a bunch of happy neat orderly turds dressed in suits commuting to the toilet/work.
And then… down the subway tunnel comes… A big tan runny mess of fun anarchy, laughing and giggling as it spatters the dark brown turds with light brown muck…
Then the boring part of the ad…
Run it in theatres ahead of this …
Product placement opportunities abound!
