          FDA says salmonellosis can last 4-7 days. Maybe something got cross-contaminated from the raw poultry.

          Influenza doesn’t usually produce the symptoms you mentioned in adults.

          In any case, I hope you all feel better soon.

              Iunno. I would think that contaminated soil still clinging to the yams could do it.

                  I like to grill most any kind of potato(e).

                  I have a gas grill, so sometimes if I’m cooking fish or thin steak, the grill will only be on for 10-15 minutes total. In those circumstances, I’ll nuke the potato(e) 75-80% of the way and finish it off on the grill without foil, turning often to roast the skin evenly.

                  If there was contaminated soil on a single yam that was in the batch (altho DFA is right, if there was contaminated soil, it’d be more than just Clan Leroy that was sick), that soil could touch/contaminate hands/cutting surfaces/knives/pots/etc. despite what was done to the yams themselves. The yams would be the vector for entry into the household, but not necessarily the gut.

                • DFA Nov 28,2011 3:59 pm || Up

                  Well it is likely that if the soil contaminated the family, everyone, not just those who ate the yams would be sick, since the hands/surfaces/utensils were probably shared.

      But it would also do something else, something very politically ingenious. The newly legalized residents of the United States would no longer have reason to hide from the Census Bureau. They’d be enumerated just in time for 2020. Immigration magnet states such as Texas, Arizona and Florida would gain increased representation in Congress and greater clout in the Electoral College. But because those new residents would not be able to vote, the clout would be exercised only by the state’s older citizen population, and it would be that way for years to come. (Of the top 10 illegal immigration states, only four are blue states: California, New York, Illinois and New Jersey.)

            Well, it also has a big impact on where money is spent in the campaign, what pet projects are emphasized and who gets ore information about the candidates.

            In my view, its worse for policy than it is for the horse race.

            • dmoas Nov 29,2011 11:04 am || Up

              I’m not so sure that would change though. If it were popular vote, you’d still spend a lot more time and effort in the population centers (which usually align with electoral voting) simply based on an attempt to maximize your dollar/time per popular vote ratio. Would you rather spend a month in the Midwest kicking up a million votes or spend an hour and a fraction of the cost in the heart of NYC for a million votes?

              • nevermoor Nov 29,2011 11:10 am || Up

                But that’s just it: they currently do the former.

                  Whoops.

                  What I meant to say is that campaigns currently spend an inordinate amount of time catering to Iowa farmers, and not nearly enough time on issues that effect cities (and most citizens).

                  Also, the GOP would campaign in California (while Democrats would campaign in Texas) because a marginal vote is a marginal vote.

                  "There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
                • dmoas Nov 29,2011 2:30 pm || Up

                  Not so sure about that. A marginal vote may be a marginal vote, but not all marginal votes cost the same. Most of their focus would likely be in the middle (politically speaking) states trying to sway the mass area that could go either way and much less focus on their particular “golden” states where they expect to win lots of votes whether they go their or not. So really, not much different from now.

                  The more I think about it, the more a popular vote would actually help a third party though. It would make gaining a grass roots effort easier since they wouldn’t have to focus on winning states. So in that context (and one of simple fairness) it should be popular vote either way.

                • nevermoor Nov 29,2011 2:40 pm || Up

                  I disagree with that (winning “area” wouldn’t matter at all), but the only way we’ll find out is if enough states pass popular vote laws.

                  The downside, though, is that in a close election a recount would be a nightmare. IMO we need to perfect electronic voting first.

                  "There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
                • ptbnl Nov 29,2011 2:50 pm || Up

                  And the great thing with electronic voting is that you know the result before polling day.

                  Which part?

                  On the first part, I think candidates would stop caring immediately about farm policy because there aren’t any farmers. In other words, rural voters are extremely overcounted under our system. They wouldn’t be then.

                  On the second part, if the election overall is close, EVERY vote would need to be recounted. Now, only certain states are likely to be close.

                  "There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
                • dmoas Nov 29,2011 8:03 pm || Up

                  I never said anything about rural voters. Just the bigger midwest areas/cities that tend to lean towards the middle. All the focus would be on trying to get the fence sitters to swing their way. A Dem won’t go to Texas because the number of votes they might gain would be insignificant compared to state that has more voters that haven’t chosen a side.

                  Yeah, the big focus (for each party) would be on getting out huge numbers in the areas where they know they have concentrations of voters. When we campaigned in CO, a swing state in ’08, we were doing GOTV in Boulder, the liberal bastion. It was more about getting their votes in than getting fence-sitters to switch.

But now it looks like no one is doing anything on their site. If I was a new person coming on the site would it bother me more to see a bunch of comments and know that some might be a bit ofensive, or to go to a site where I see no one posting..meh whatever, but still.

                  it was more a clutter thing.

                  The evolution was people were posting in the recap thread a sort of “live blogging” of the CHris townsend show. People didn’t like 1000 comments in the recap thread about top ten lists and cooking. So, bloom made a “CT thread” onthe front page. that too seemed to much clutter, so it moved to the overflow game threads where the mods put game thread II, III and IV after the game is over.

                  At the same time, the edict to stop swearing came down from above. after the blowback it was deemed OK to swear and talk politics in the Lounge.

                  it’s actually not okay to talk politics in the lounge. but we do sometimes.

                  There’s a button on the front page that says “overflow” something. Click on it and the lounges are there. If you’re interested.

      Phoenix Muni is a great location for a ballpark but I see where the City of Phoenix is coming from in not wanting to put money into upgrades. There’s no ballpark-related development, i.e. hotels and restaurants, around the park so I’m sure most A’s fans who make the spring training trip spend lots of money in Scottsdale or Tempe, not so much in Phoenix. The land occupied by the ballpark, auxiliary field, training facility and quite large parking area could probably fetch a nice price now from an office/condo/apartment developer, presumably a lot more in two or three years if the economy has picked up.

          Las Vegas is the real Ground Zero. Drive through the outer parts of that place if you want to see some true foreclosure desolation.

          The outer parts of the Phoenix metropolitan area suck too, but the proximity of the Phoenix Zoo and the buttes of Papago Park, and being close-in to the center of sprawling Phoenix, make the Phoenix Muni area prime territory for the next phase of commercial/residential development.

    So, speaking of vocational things, I had a very strange occurrence this morning. Jesus, is that really how you spell occurrence? That looks so wrong.

    So anyhow, I have been doing this job with the SED kids for a couple weeks. It’s okay, but it’s also real…nebulous wrt direction. They really want you to form your own path, I guess. The program’s in the process of transitioning to something else (namely a place that really doesn’t do any kind of restraints or takedowns–they’re really rare now), so it’s just kind of…nowhere right now. There hasn’t been a whole lot of direction given me. I’m a good alcoholic, though, I just roll with it and come up with what I do and the kids seem to dig it okay. It’s not rocket science.

    And it’s also, in my estimation of things, not really necessary to be so stressed out about anything. Granted, these kids are generally speaking not as emotionally capable of interacting appropriately 24/7, but they’re good kids who want to do good, who almost always respond well to positive prompts, and giving choices and then giving them enough space to actually make the decision. They’re not bad kids. They’re not criminals or drug addicts or alcoholics. They’re various levels of functioning retarded kids who have been physically and/or sexually abused.

    So, for two weeks, no real direction, no real feedback, no nothing. A day staff will show up about a half-hour before I crawl out of there. There’s kind of a pass-on, but even that is kind of unstructured and can be detailed, but can also be nothing.

    This morning school staff came in about an hour before I left. She micromanaged on this level, “Normally, when we serve breakfast, we have the big cups, not the little cups.” “We like to have the cups filled before they get to the table–it just saves time.” “You wanna put soap in the dish washer? We won’t start it, but it’ll be ready to go when we leave.”

    So, at the end, I got this speech about how her and the other staff are like a well-oiled machine and that we need to remain constantly moving (even though 85% of the action is happening in the kitchen/dining area), and that they don’t have time to fuck around in the morning. This is all delivered like the whole reason I’m there is because the company decided to give her sister’s job to me.

    And the reason we need to keep constantly moving is because our client base of SIX might, what? I dunno, sell nuclear codes to the Russians with their loser friends from high school. SIX. Three staff. Well-oiled machine. Now, the kids at RHouse were different–higher functioning, less retarded, but also a lot more manipulative and hell-bent on getting loaded. Me and Charles watched a house of 20-22 of them for at least nine months. Maybe a year.

    I also witnessed in the three hours training I got to this woman’s standers, one of the school staff in his zest to “control” the situation, completely escalate a kid to the point where they had to take him to a separate place in the house (the OP Room). This situation was COMPLETELY avoidable and could have been even worse. The micromanagement does not work on these kids. It only serves to frustrate them and make them act out.

    So. Thank you for letting me vent. I don’t think I’m going back. And I think I’m not going back because of her. Oh, also, um, they make night staff clock in every twenty minutes, which is an affront to me.

      Sounds like a shitty environment.

      I’m glad you got a better job.

      Sounds like more aggravation than it’s worth. What with the office that needs occupying.

      I suspect they are accustomed to a lower class of overnight employees than what they got in you.

        I’m somewhat convinced that the school staff thought maybe I was one of the clients. A non-compliant one, at that.

      You should get a new job. Preferably one that will give you your own office.

      I’m seeing it now… one of those animated TV commercials…

      It’s a lower intestine, but it’s also a clean subway station with pink tile and a bunch of happy neat orderly turds dressed in suits commuting to the toilet/work.

      And then… down the subway tunnel comes… A big tan runny mess of fun anarchy, laughing and giggling as it spatters the dark brown turds with light brown muck…

      Then the boring part of the ad…

    Heh.

    6th December 2011 sees the issue of “The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook” by Elvis Costello and the Imposters.

    . . .

    Unfortunately, we at http://www.elviscostello.com find ourselves unable to recommend this lovely item to you as the price appears to be either a misprint or a satire.
