If A's cannot move to San Jose, when the Dodgers have a real owner, don't be surprised if Billy Beane ends up in L.A.
— Peter Gammons (@pgammo) November 21, 2011
I guess I agree with ML — all the parts are still in motion, nothing settled.
- As mentioned previously, Bailey->Reds under discussion
- … as is Gio->Feesh
- … and stay out of the Woolworth’s!
- OK, ML, this is just dumb. At least my implausible conspiracy theories are rigorous, detailed, and motivated.

#5, might just be one of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories out there about the stadium thing.
#1, between the Rosenthal thing & Gammons, I wouldn’t be surprised if the “insider” for these is Beane or someone close to them attempting to gain national attention on the thing as part of PR campaign to force resolution. I’d wouldn’t be surprised if Selig came out with a “I’m doing what in a couple of weeks? Talking to the Giants about San Jose? No, I haven’t spoken to anyone about that yet. I’m still waiting on the BRC report.” quote in the near future. I think no one on the national level really cares and it’s pissing them off and frustrating them to no end, especially given the attention the Expos had.
I don’t think that’s Beane’s style. Wolff, I would buy, for exactly the reasons you give.
Heck, I could see Forst being the source, for entirely different reasons.
It’s not Beane’s style to play with the media?
This whole off season seems like a coordinated effort to play the pity card. Much mpre aggressive than in years past.
That’s kind of why I think that’s the case. No local media has touched this latest one nor has big national media. Just Rosenthal and Gammons (tweet only). Almost all talk of it has been relegated deep to the backpages outside the bay area and the normal backpages in the bay area.
nm bait — literally!

Thanks, and go As.
Good.
Going from memory, Pedro Martinez was a better choice in 1999, but as for this…meh.

That is very nicely put.
Yes.
Thank you.
And sorry all for not participating more lately, I’m working on it…
We never would have encouraged your dreams if it meant less FKEC.
heh
it’s not even that, just dealing with some things….
Let us know if we can help
Like we can help the guy who can dis- and re-assemble a rifle while programming an SQL query.
Reminds me of a conversation mrs. llama and I had recently. We were discussing how our new neighbor is a construction worker and if we became friends he could help teach us (we are not particularly handy) some of the basics of home maintenance. And in return, we could lend our expertise to him if he, uh, ever needs to engineer some thin polymer films or simulate the time evolution of plasmmas.
Now that you mention it…
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah, well, get in line.
Surely you have other skills that might be valuable in trade.
Unless you count sabermetrics, a “skill” which has long since atrophied…
What if he’s somewhat computer illiterate or curious about Islam or needs someone to housesit or babysit?
You can help him there on all fronts.
Neighbor helping neighbor is more about sharing avocations than vocations.
Thanks, nevermoor.
In a grand scheme of things, everything is dandy, and I feel I shouldn’t have any right to complain.
But, still, instead of going through the last stages of training for Aconcagua, I am here, grounded (a heart condition has been discovered that made my cardiologist strongly oppose my expedition, an opinion that is not necessarily important for singles, but somewhat binding for married people, I guess).
So, I’ve been somewhat grumpy lately (the condition seeming to be a permanent one, I have advised my climbing partner to go with a substitute, so watching him get ready makes me both happy for him and pissed that I will spend my X-mas with my in-laws) and with not much inspiration/motivation for creative things. Once they finally finish their examinations (if my research were as successful as what doctors do, I’d be out there on the street, starving), and I can start having a somewhat clearer picture of what, if any, limitations I am looking into, I guess things will quickly go back to normal.
Ouch – sorry to hear all of that.
Ditto. Hope it turns out ok in the long run

Yikes. Bloom might have to break up with her.
It’ll just turn into a Romeo & Juliet situation, which will appeal to his inner English Major, so that might work.
I realize Bloom has found work and is in a better place financially, but it always pays to cultivate the sugar momma… even when she has her moments.
She’s back on the sanity bus … and throwing Suzuki under it.
Angels gots a brand new GM who’s already been asking around for a vet catcher. The 2011 Angels only got -0.8 WAR out of their catchers. Suzuki was worth 2.2 WAR… that’s a 3 Win swing. The return wouldn’t be great if you wanted an impact in 2012, but if you were willing to wait until 2014 I think there’s a couple guys that would be worth the deal.
Oh, I tots think Suzuki should be moved if anyone will give anything of value for him. And I’m fine with in-div trades.
Not having moved Suzuki at his peak value is almost like a sunk cost — shouldn’t stand in the way of making a halfway decent trade if the opportunity arises.

#2 I stated this on **, but the central premise of Mark Sheldon’s position is flawed. The Reds aren’t going to be able to find a proven, reliable closer on the cheap via FA. GM Walk Jockerty wants an established guy and was willing to keep/re-sign Franscisco Cordero for 2 years/~$10 million… but Cordero has already informed the Reds he’s gotten a better offer! With teams no longer losing a draft pick to sign a Type A closer terms/dollars are only going to increase on the market. Cincy picked up Brandon Phillips’ $12 million option, that ate up most of their free cash heading into 2012. Bailey fits their budget.
Now, Cincy’s stance is that Yonder Alonso has plus power potential. They also think they can get by with his horrendous defense in LF for 2012 if he drops weight. They don’t think they’ll be able to keep Joey Votto once his current deal runs out after 2013 and they may not be able to afford him after 2012! Alonso is the heir apparent.
Simply put, with Cincy thinking Alonso is going to hit 25 HR down the road and Votto nearing the end of his tenure, the Reds value Alonso much more highly (IMO) than he’s worth. But the Reds need bullpen help and they’ve made their intention to find an established closer clear… they’ve also got 2 of the top catching prospects in baseball. They’ve all but handed Devin Mesoraco the starting job next year and they expect him to thrive. That means Yasmani Grandal, a switch-hitter who’s a year behind Mesoraco suddenly struggles to find a place in Cincy’s long term plans. I’m of the opinion that Alonso and Grandal share similar offensive ceilings, which plays OK at 1B but AWESOME behind the plate. But as I said, Grandal needs to start the year in the minors and could be a full season away from the Show.
All this makes Grandal (seemingly) more valuable to the Reds as a trade chip, not as an projected starter. The problem is, I’m not sure the A’s are willing to be cutthroat enough to pursue Grandal to the obvious conclusion… acquiring him to replace Kurt Suzuki.
In GABP? That’s “plus power potential”? So he’d maybe hit, what, 12 in the Coli?
Bring the walls in and he can hit 50 in Cisco in a few years.
Translating “plus” power to actual HR numbers + factoring ballpark is a bitch.
I think he hits 15-18 in Cincy, probably around 15 max if he’s in Oakland. He’s strong but doesn’t generate loft.
Trade for him, then trade Suzuki, and find filler for the rebuilding year. Hell, I know we have one or two in AAA that can fill in (Powell, Donaldson, whatever) during a non contending rebuild.
I can do better than filler to replace Suzuki in 2012.
I’ll not say who’d I’d bring in (yet) but I let Recker and Donaldson push Powell for the back-up job. Simply put, if I could land the guy I want I’d need more from the back-up spot then I think Powell can physically provide.
You’re going after Kendall, aren’t you.
Posada?
Thanks, and go As.
Nah.
But I am bringing the band back together…
Rrrrramon?
Apparently he won’t cost a draft pick:
You are correct.
Ramon should be good for about 100 games tops, meaning the A’s #2 Catcher has to be durable (good would be nice as well, but if wishes were horses…) more durable than I think Powell can provide. So Recker or Donaldson is the #2 with Grandal acquired from Cincy serving as the hei in 2013.
I already have them on my playstation
Just let the teams know and I think they’ll work it out.
Better be cheap as shit, because it quite literally doesn’t matter who’s behind the plate. On some level seeing what we have in backups over the full season might be beneficial. The idea isn’t to compete at all. In fact, if we suck some serious ass, it only helps our rebuild.
See, that just seems like the most obvious thing to do. Grandal + Sappelt?
I’m trying to recall what the supposed asking price from Texas was at the deadline, too. Granted I don’t think it’ll require a package as significant as what Texas would have needed to give up but at least it was some sort of a starting point.
Thanks, and go As.
If they were cutthroat enough, would we hear of a Suzuki trade first or second? Because losing all your leverage combined with Suzuki’s recent struggles almost spells a Russell Martin situation. Martin had trade value but the Dodgers overused him enough and didn’t trade him for long enough that he was simply let go. The A’s have missed Suzuki’s peak trading value, but I hope they’re smart enough to cut bait and get something.
Suzuki, even if he reverts, is a luxury the team doesn’t need in its current state.
I think Beane’s gonna Kendall him: hang onto him far past his usefulness/value, sign him to s dumb extension, ride him into the ground, end up getting something useless but >0 (his value at the time of the trade) for him.
I will be REALLY surprised if he plays his option year in ’14 with Oakland
Thanks, and go As.
{snickers at reference to Suzuki as a “luxury”}
We gotta build up his trade value somehow…
Camlambeckin anyone?

Those animals were all dead before being stuffed into other animals or having other animals stuffed into them, right?
That just reminds me of this verse…
Hey guys, I was just at the Occupy Davis/Katehi resignation rally/anti police brutality summit…
The turnout was quite amazing. Literally 10,000+ people were present at the start of the rally and by the time I left 2 hours later, the crowd had not diminished in size. Those who theorized that the Friday pepper spraying would only serve to mobilize further protest were absolutely correct. There was a strong “martyrdom” vibe throughout the rally.
As such, those who argued that the occupy protests lack a cohesive, coherent message still have a point. I attended to protest the police actions on Friday but at various times, I felt like I was attending a social revolution/anti-capitalism/fee hike protest/rights for people of color/anarchist, etc movement. There were many small factions at the rally (from what I can tell, many were from outside Davis), each with their own agenda, and most seemed to view Friday’s events, and this rally, as a fertile recruiting opportunity. One ironically amusing moment happened when a speaker argued for freedom of thought, and the next speaker began a “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” chant…
The Chancellor’s speech was completely ineffective and underwhelming. She apologized (without specifying for what), told an anecdote about 1973, and made some empty rhetorical statements about “building a better community”. It was extremely short and did nothing to appease anyone. It may have even pushed some on-the-fence people to the pro-resignation side. If she ends up getting ousted, it wouldn’t be because of Friday, it’d be for her complete lack of charisma and leadership (and PR acumen) following those events.
My confusion has been (admittedly not clicking through too many levels)why did UC police need to disperse a few people “blocking” a sidewalk. It looked more symbolic than any other pictures I have seen of any of the OWS happenings.
How high does the disperse order come from? The Scene commander? Chief? a Lieutenant? The University? the UC?
The reasoning from the Chancellor (who asked the police to come in to remove the students) was that it was public property, “affecting” faculty and students, would lead to a growing number of occupiers/protesters, and posed a “health and sanitation problem”.
It was completely ridiculous and ironic considering that pre-Friday the Occupy Davis movement literally numbered in the tens, and now there’s probably several thousand new recruits willing to take up the cause.
I think it was monkeyball who linked a piece last week that suggested three paths by which Occupy encampments could end:
1. They successfully get the 1% to realize the error of their ways and negotiate reparations. Perhaps not the most likely outcome.
2. Colder weather and fickle public/media attention spans lead to the encampments inevitably dwindling away into nothingness.
3. Heavy-handed state responses galvanize the movement and attract supporters in much greater numbers.
You’d think that the various powers that be would recognize this, but it seems they never do.
It’s ironically fairly similar to the federal deficit situation — if you just do nothing, it’ll pretty much disappear on its own.
Here is a longer version of what we have seen. 4 cameras.
As I can’t contribute much about what’s going on over there, here is what I found funny when we had a similar situation in Stuttgart.
I don’t know if you are aware of it, but we are getting screwed over here as the city and the state are pushing for a new train central station, in a project which they want to sell as transportation one (“Imagine – you can now save 7 minutes off the ride to a city 100 miles away that nobody goes to anyway!”), while in fact it is all about moving the station and adjoining rail-tracks underground and creating bunch of construction cites in the very center of the city.
You can say a lot of things about Germans, but there are two things that they don’t like messed with, especially if they are of Swabian variety. Their money and their trees.
As this project is supposed to cost over $5bn and as it called for cutting down some 200 century-old trees in the very center of the city, the people got irked and took to “occupy the park”. Now things did get ugly at the very end, but for months hundreds of protesters lived in their tents, or even up in the trees. While I never did, I was bringing food to some of the people I knew that camped.
There were numerous actions to remove the protesters. And here is where the whole thing gets a funny, cliche-like German turn. Refusing to leave a public place is an Ordnungswidirgkeit, the lowest form of doing something legally wrong, akin to a parking ticket. But, you get ticket for each officer that had to help pick you up and carry you away. So, working on that diet could save you some money.
The police officers were local guys, very nice and sympathetic with the crowd, and feeling was mutual. I know of people asking them to carry them to the specific exit in the park because that’s where their car was, people sharing their snacks with cops, joking, saying “you need more strength so you can carry me alone, I can’t afford it otherwise”, and always saying good bye with “see you tomorrow”…
Literally a picture of Pete Rose’s iphone
It made me laugh, but doesn’t surprise me one bit.
George Michael?
I would think George Michael would have a picture of himself as the background of his phone, too.
A screen capture of him wielding his lightsaber in the garage.
That’s not a garage… I’m pretty sure that’s a public bathroom.
And I’m also pretty sure that’s not a lightsaber.
maybe you mean the singer/songwriter
maybe you think that picture of Pete Rose looks like the Sports Machine guy, but I don’t.

1. If the report that Selig is meeting with the Giants on the subject is true, it’s over. Selig only does that when the question becomes what’s the price rather than will you allow it. One is reminded of the old “We have established what you are madam” line from George Bernard Shaw.
It seems like just yesterday.
Oh wait no, it was over 2 FKing years ago
Thanks, and go As.
I am a good person for editing… but I don’t want anyone to meat me, and anyway, I don’t have a resumate.
I was thinking he just needed a film editor, but after reading that, I think he needs both… and that’s just to start.
The syntax of that post is spot-on perfect, assuming they’re making a meat porn movie in a job application setting.
I can see it now… a waiting room full of jobseekers, and in walks a Lady Gaga-type wearing a meat dress, and the orgy ensues!
You don’t want to know what they’d do with the rolled-up magazines, but I can assure you it’ll be groundbreaking enough to win an AVN award.
They would totally higher you.
