    A mayoral recall effort led by long-time Oaklander Gene Hazzard, which already picked up steam before Occupy Oakland, gaining more than the requisite number of signatures to be “on,” is was talk around Downtown Oakland as the police action against Occupy Oakland resumed last night.

    Anyone know whether this could really happen? And whether it should?

    • FreeSeatUpgrade Oct 26,2011 11:02 am || Up

      It is a pipe dream. The problem is that Oakland’s threshold for getting the OK to officially gather recall signatures is a preposterously low 50 signatures. So anyone could get that part done. But 20,000 legit registered Oakland voter sigs would be needed to actually call a recall election. Unless some serious entity bankrolled it (how much do you still want this job, Don Perata?), an all-volunteer effort would be lucky to get 10% of that total.

      Was my advice at FK day at all helpful?

      Was also curious when I saw that how much of a challenge you expect it to be to fund and sustain an all-volunteer shelter over the long. Obviously you believe it can be done, but it struck me as a pretty massive undertaking.

      • the dogfather Oct 26,2011 11:54 am || Up

        Yes it was — thanks! The FAAS group has strong local roots and has drawn on numerous longtime islanders to join the steering committee and help with funding. Russo attempted in several ways to blow us over and escalate the negotiation (they started at $140K, we at $300K — ended up at $300K city support), but we refused the bait and chose to recast his ultimatums as requests. We did not have to play the trump card — Hayward kills an ungodly 53% now, vs. 12% at Alameda. Also, the removal of Alameda’s shelter capacity would’ve been felt all over, as all the shelters are slammed.

        As to funding, we’ll be over $200K vs. the $300k needed next year, by this weekend. Trick will be to convert this year’s emergency funding into ongoing, sustainable support. It was critical that we get to do licensing and keep adoption revenue, which will fill the remainder through next year (as we work on year 2), even though their licensing compliance rate is poor. We plan to convert it into “memberships” that include things like microchip, license and discount coupons from local animal supply and other merchants. Then small events and one big-un — first Gala is tomorrow night at Rockwall — auction items will include a lunch with our Billy (a good man, he is). A few tix still available on the FAAS website: faas.bbnow.org

    Project Runway finale tomorrow!

    After seeing the collections in last week’s pre-finale episode, it seemed to me that there was no way anyone but Victor could win the whole thing. Of course, I thought the same about Mondo after last year’s pre-finale, and that didn’t turn out so well.

    Also, it was lame that they let both Kimberley and Anya move on to the Bryant Park show. I’d have rather they cut both of them; their work simply didn’t rate next to Victor and Joshua’s.

    "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
    • batgirl Oct 26,2011 12:30 pm || Up

      I really did not like any of the collections, to be honest. Victor is clearly the most technically proficient, and I can see why people would like his work, but it does nothing for me. Hated Joshua’s, Kimberley’s and Anya’s. In terms of keeping both ladies, it would seem they thought Anya’s work was the worst, but thought she did too well all season long to let her go. Don’t know why they saved Kimberley (Michael gave her an oddly positive critique, I thought.) It’s clear that the judges delighted so much last year in how Gretchen took their pointers as gospel they were just chomping at the bit this year to hammer home their notes on styling, accessorizing, etc.

      Anya needs to just forget about “growing” and do what she does best–beachwear.

      • Leopold Bloom Oct 26,2011 6:42 pm || Up

        They loved Kimberly because she went to her “roots” and gave them ethnic, urban wear. Michael and Nina still think it’s 1989.

    I’m with MY here.

    The late 1990s were a very prosperous time for America. And the analysis that the spread of global capitalism to what we used to call “the third world” would be immiserating for those countries was wrong.

    By contrast, the main analytic points of Occupy Wall Street and its offshoots are correct. Policymakers promised us broadly shared prosperity and macroeconomic stability. We didn’t get the former, and now we can see that we didn’t get the latter either. Having failed to deliver prosperity or stability, the global elite pivoted to the claim that owing to the lack of past prosperity it would be irresponsible to return us to macroeconomic stability without first cutting pensions. It’s crap, and people shouldn’t stand for it.

Hell, we might even have to get rid of them entirely. We just can’t afford them,” the CEO said. He checks his wrist, admiring his watch. “Hey, did you see my new Rolex? I got it to go with my brand new yacht? It’s a thousand footer the company just bought me this quarter after I put us a billion dollars into in the black. It’s a beauty.” The CEO sighs, “It’s really unfortunate about your pensions though. They just have to go to keep the company solvent.”

      I think you have to make a distinction (well, I do at least) between the clearing of the encampment early Tuesday morning and the response to protestors last night. By most accounts, in the former case there was a genuine need for City action, the cops gave plenty of warning and opportunity for those not actively choosing to be arrested to remove themselves from the scene, and cop responses to (real or perceived) provocations were relatively measured.

      By contrast, last night was horrible, as the cops foolishly maintained an enormous perimeter with heavily armed skirmish lines, chose a massive retaliation approach with the poorly conceived notion that this would cause the protests to disband, and used (real or perceived) provocations as a pretext for unjustifiably brutal reactions. It was weird…Oakland spent two weeks acknowledging that the right to dissent is critical and must be accomodated, then once they acted (rightly IMO) Tuesday AM to address the encampments, it was like OK, dissent time’s over motherfuckers, now back off now or get gassed and shot.

          Based on what I just saw, the police posture tonight will be quite different. Rather than barricading off a 6 square block area, they’ve basically just fenced off the grassy area where the encampment had been. So my inference is that the cops will maintain a better distance from protestors tonight, and act only to prevent the pitching of tents. So to speak.

              The silver lining from last night is definitely the lack of senseless vandalism and looting from the protestors. With a few exceptions, it seems like they Occupy folks self-policed that kind of behavior quite well.

              Yup. And with the cops pulled way back and in much reduced numbers, I’d guess that means the protestors will have re-occupied the grass by morning.

              Which all points to the stupidity of the heavy handed response last night. Enforcing a no-campouts policy after the first eviction should have been doable, but after last night’s outrageous behavior, the politicians have no choice but to remove the cops from the equation entirely, as all sound moral ground has been ceded. And the Occupiers know it.

                it’s been talked about a lot the past couple of days. Between these ads, the connections to Americans for Prosperity (Koch brothers), and the lack of any significant mobilizing in the early primary states, it’s becoming increasingly obvious that HC is following in SP’s footsteps in terms of how to profit from politics.

      They’ve been doing that in OK for awhile, and I was certain we wouldn’t stoop so low here.

        Did you read the article he linked? It’s not really shocking when you see the background of all of the factors that have led to this situation.

        • nevermoor Oct 28,2011 10:03 am || Up

          It depends. Unless people think closing the schools will provide a better education system (and I didn’t see that in the article), then I remain where I am.

          • andeux Oct 28,2011 10:25 am || Up

            The other issue is, as always, Prop 13, which
            1) Eroded all cities’ tax bases statewide;
            2) Required a 2/3 majority for localities to pass special assessments to make up for it;
            3) Made the system fundamentally inequitable in a way that those special assessments can’t correct.

            As a homeowner paying taxes on the full value of my property, I find it absolutely infuriating to think about the fact that these school (and other) bonds are only necessary because so many other people (and corporations) are paying taxes on only a small percentage of theirs. Like a good liberal I have voted for the ones for schools anyway, and they generally have gotten the votes they’ve needed here in Berkeley. But it would be a lot easier to swallow higher taxes on myself if other people were also paying their full share.

            Oakland has been a lot harder hit by the recession, and it’s not at all a simple issue to try to find more revenue.

              Yeah. I would be happy to do away with Prop 13 (especially with better-focused exemptions), or pass anything that chips away at it at all.

              It might be the most disastrous proposition in our nation’s history.

    Rather hilariously, the Oakland protestors left the fence pieces they took down stacked in a house of cards pyramid, perhaps 25 feet tall, made up of fencing sections which are probably about 8 feet by 8 feet square. It had to have been quite a collective effort to make that stack without cranes or ladders. Impressive.

        The bigger question is how they get around well-established laws that say selling an asset at less than market value amounts to an illegal gift of public funds. Most likely, SJ will claim that the 50% discount from the appraised value is OK because the asset isn’t that valuable for its intended use without necessary public infrastructure improvements.

          Well, right now the only thing that can be build on that site is a stadium. Anyone else would require an EIR to do anything with it and it’s only a patchwork of land so it’s not just a square lot. I’d guess those details make it less attractive.

          Either way, It wasn’t a smart move on both sides to not do a market value deal on this. It opens itself up to unnecessary scrutiny with a cost that’s just a drop in the bucket compared to the entirety of what they’re doing, especially when they’re giving him a cheap option deal that doesn’t require him to actually spend any money until he knows for sure it’s a done deal.
