I wonder if the Bush-violated-the-Constitution crowd will decry the killing of an American w/o a trial via drone?? #hypocrisy

Maybe Yglesias should talk to Bloomberg about instituting a financial-services-janitorial tax.

BARTONTRUMBO TO THIRD!So, was doing some more-than-just-quasi-work-related research today, and found this. Anyone share my HOLY SHIT! moment on that page?
I’m not seeing what you’re talking about. Just that it’s an implantable hearing aid?
You’re obviously not much of an Alan Pakula fan.
My money’s on FSU or andeux to grok this.
Nope. I’m guessing it has something to do with one of the members of the BOD, but no idea who or what.
Without googling, the name Kenneth Dahlberg sounds really, really familiar. A Nixon crony, perhaps?
Ding ding ding!
the dude is nearly 100
So he’s gone from planting listening devices in headquarters to planting listening devices in heads?
That reminds me — well, one, of how much I FKin love that movie (and Redford, and Pakula), but also, two, of my theory that FARGO is actually an extended joke on a detail from this scene.
All The President’s Men is one of those realtively few films that I’ll pretty much watch every single time I come across it running on TV. Come to think of it, so is The Candidate.
Yup.
Talking of movies, you’ve got email.
spwc bait
Well, I don’t ever see it as being particularly profitable, but in a world of full legalized euthanasia, it could be an interesting privately-subsidized (Johnny Depp?) choice.
I tend to see suicide as a last-ditch option. However, a lot of people see it as unthinkable under any circumstance, and I honestly have trouble understanding that point of view.
Maybe I’m thinking too far ahead, but I mourn the lost value of all the memories/processes/information when someone dies. I sincerely hope that before the end of this decade, brain information/consciousness can be uploaded into electronic forms, to stop the massive brain drain that is physical death.
As opposed to, you know, books and stories that old people tell younger people.
Thanks, and go As.
Also, who gets the awesome job of cleaning up the dead bodies at the end of the ride?
Thanks, and go As.
Bankrupt lawyers!
The end of the track runs straight onto the floor of a meat processing plant.
Synergy!
Soylent green.
Soylent green is synergy!
I mean, if I ever chose to go that route that sounds like the best way to go.
Since I don’t have cable I’m contemplating one of theMLB postseason packages.
Has anyone done this before? It appears to include the choice of 10 camera angles but not the TBS feed itself – does this mean not the TBS camera angles at all, or just not their particular combination into a feed?
I have not done it before, but my understanding is its basically like looking through a hole in the fence. I hear the camera angles are kinda neat, but you can’t “direct” the action to watch the game like you would on TV.
And we’re one step closer to getting knocked off the top of the food chain.
Watching the emergence of tool-using fish is a beautiful glimpse into the distant past and maybe even the distant future.
Then again, even futuristic races of sentient fish-men may have to deal with overpopulation issues in less-than-scrupulous ways now and again.
6. Just finished a looong argument with a high school buddy about this, and targeted non-battlefield drone strikes in general. I don’t understand how anyone can support any sort of preemptive use of force by the US government that is based entirely on its intelligence/say-so regarding the people in question’s ability/desire to attack the US, in a post-Iraq world.
Though he is going to send me the 35-page paper that Princeton makes all their juniors write, which largely focuses on this very topic, so I guess I’m about to find out.
I hope it cites the Yoo memo!
iFSU the memo cites Yoo.
Very nice.

6. Just more evidence that TPTB for the GOP either don’t pay attention or just go right out and lie
6. Wasn’t he, like, not a citizen anymore?
Thanks, and go As.
Has anyone linked to Ratto’s super-brilliant faux commencement address yet?
Awesome.
Must be a liberal.
RR really does have a way with words.
Johnny Damon, the rancid stench of Red Sox and Yankees still clings about you, but you’re nevertheless wonderful at this moment.
Kelly Shoppach the rancid stench of Red Sox still clings about you, but you’re nevertheless wonderful at this moment.
Hee.
Hee hee!
It’s like having one Dan Johnson just wasn’t enough.
I was trying to search B-Ref for post-season starters with as few prior big league starts as Matt Moore (1 game) but they have a bug in their database coding.
Off the top of my head I thought of Rick Ankiel (35) and Livan Hernandez (17) but neither is particularly close. Any ideas?
Zito had 14 (still not particularly close)
The Harpo Marx/Mark Fidrych-looking guy for the Phillies in ’80.
Uh … Marty Bystrom?
Yup. 5 starts in regular season in ’80, 1 start NLCS, 1 start WS. IIRC, there was some controversy about his being allowed on the postseason roster.
TBS had a graphic, I don’t remember the others. But no he is the fewest starts. A guy for the dodgers in 52 or something. Black? had 2.
Joe Black – but he actually pitched in 56 games in 1952, mostly as the closer.
At the very end of the season he made 2 starts – including a complete game – before starting games 1 (complete), 4 & 7 of the series!
1. Change of plans
No, that’s creative.
It was particularly cunning of the Rays to avoid home-field disadvantage in this series.
Not what I was expecting.
Romanick is especially surprising, given how close he’s been to most of the A’s pitching staff from the minors on up.
The annual defenestration of the A’s hitting coach has become a fixture on the franchise calendar, though.
The other surprise is Gallego.
Yeah.
Thanks, and go As.
Very much so. Questionably 3rd Base Coaching and poor infield defense. Let’s keep him!
I thought Billy established that he hires the pitching coach independent of the manager starting with Rick Peterson. A lot of clubs do it that way now; we’ve come some distance since Billy Martin hauled drinking buddy Art Fowler along to all his various jobs including Oakland. NewBob has worked with Bryan Price in both Seattle and Arizona so he must have made a strong pitch.
I’m surprised about Gallego too but the infield defense did improve late in the season.
M.E. for E.M. huh?
Do we want him?
Turns 23 in November. Not sure why he missed most of the season. Has some athleticism and has shown progress with his plate discipline. Probably back to High-A next year.
So likely meh with the possibility of a semi-decent sleeper?
I am loving a couple of road faves this week, Buffalo -3 at Cincy and NYG -1.5 at Arizona.
I’m hating my picks. I think the Niners can keep it closer than the line, I think the Texans will cover, and I’m currently going against the Seahawks.
That said, I can easily see the Niners getting blown out, Seattle’s 12th man keeping it close, and the Texans going nowhere.
I like the Niners, esp at the +9.5 line on 16pix. But I think the Texans are in trouble as Pittsburgh finally gets right this week. I’m glad I don’t have to pick SEA vs ATL, what a dog of a game.
I also like Detroit getting 1.5 in Dallas.
Yeah. It’s a shitty team in a great environment vs. a real-but-underperforming team on the road. I’ve gone back and forth a lot (and on the Texans just because I’m the only undefeated team).
DFWAS
GOD DAMN people are stupid
Thanks, and go As.
But if I say “Jesus” every time I punch someone it would violate my constitutional rights for you to try to stop me.
depends on which Jesus
Thanks, and go As.
HISTORICAL JESUS! {punch}
Hey Zeus! {thwack}
David De Jesus {weak contact}
Personal! Jesus! {reach out and touch}
Plastic Jesus (rides on dashboard)
do you mean parking jesus?
No sir.
” frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>
I was ready to come up with a reply about a detachable Jesus.
Got about 2 words in when it clicked that THAT isn’t the word in the song. Now I think I may be going to hell..
King Missile also wrote a song called “Jesus Was Way Cool,” so you’re just conflating the two.
Subthread full of win OTM.
You know who else had a minor yacht incident?
I’m disappointed to find that’s not a Gary Hart reference.
Natalie Wood
We also would have accepted Natalie Wood.
But then the proper question is “What type of wood does not float?”.
Natalie Wood was a wonderful wife,
But Bob Wagner couldn’t find his cute bride.
I guess he thought she was doing the laundry,
Because he saw her go out with the Tide.
About time they suspended the game; it was pouring down pretty hard for pretty long there.
tougher blow for the yankees in the long run. I imagine CC and Justin will not make it back out
Angels GM Tony Reagins resigns.
did you read the matt Mcarthy book?
No. And I have no idea where you’re going with that question.
He is featured in the book as the author is an Angels farm hand. I imagine all his transactions being done like the one in that book.
Haven’t read the book, can you describe the transaction process outlined?
reagins cried. thats all
Heh.
Reagins didn’t like to deal and no way would he ever talk to Beane. Maybe new guy will be more interested.
So much for the 3 person rotation
With only 25 pitches, I’d send them back out there tomorrow.
Maybe, i am not sure how 25 max effort pitches would wear on a guy not accustomed to going everyday
I would guess they’d be against it, both the pitchers and the teams. Especially in the first game of the first round. One day off, different story.
Either way, they’re sending their #2’s tomorrow, #3s Sunday. All this is MLB’s fault for giving them the prime time slot. Give them the early time slot and they probably get this one played, though no one’s willing to say it.
i know this guy named matt that will say it!
Hmm… you know what. I think you might be right.
well then
So I’m getting ready to go to a conference next week in a fun (but undisclosed) location. I’ve worked extra hard this week to get all my materials together, prepare my talk, all that good stuff. Since the suspicious change are kind of a handful, my MiL planned a trip down to spend a week with her daughter and grandkids. This is as perfect a situation as can be imagined: my kids get to spend time with their grandma, which is important, but I don’t have to be in confined quarters with my MiL, which is also important. We don’t always see eye-to-eye.
This morning I get word that the conference has been completely canceled. So now:
– My stressful week is for naught.
– I don’t get to go to fun location.
– I get to spend the next. week. with. my. MiL.
FML.
Ugh. Take Missus Coin somewhere fun without the change?
That will be one way to partially salvage the situation.
My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.
Worse: out of beer!
Vodka it is.
Two words: Road trip.
Or just don’t tell anyone and hang out at sfo eating $14 sandwiches all week.
cheaper than a muffin!
Thanks, and go As.
I love this thread.
Yeah. Hang out in the international terminal and pretend you’re stateless and have no home to go to.
Win!
Ill be there all week
That sucks. If you need to have an important business lunch in the city….
…with your esteemed colleagues, Msrs. nm and mb.
Friday at HSB was great – beautiful sunshiney set from the local, Chris Isaac, and Robert Plant brought it all home. LB (& any others), if you want to try to conquer crowd issues tomorrow and go, I’ll be shooting for getting there in time for Merle & Kris. You can email me if you want to try to meet up – I’ll check before I go in, and text messaging is the best way to go, so send me your phone # for texting.
I may drag JP out there this afternoon. I have a friend who’s working the gig (something involving managing vendors) whom I haven’t seen in years … plus, I’ve actually never been to HSB, which is ridiculous.

He’s fun to watch. During my last stint with WF, I went to Hawaii on a recognition trip, part of which was a free Chris Isaak concert. I got some nice pics from really close (I was basically right in front of him).
