    Sorry I was distracted by the gargantuan boobs in that photo.

    And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

    Thanks, and go As.

    It’s supposed to be 100 degrees today here in the valley.

    I just don’t know if we’re gonna get enough people for wiffleball. Hell, I kinda want to stay home and stay out of the heat… then again, I love the game, and there is a pool right by where we play.

        Does wiffleball count as a fantasy team?

        We used to have a player even more beautiful than Salma. She was Greek, raised in the Midwest… She was into me, but I knew it would never last, so I never let it get off the ground in the first place. Shortly thereafter, I started dating my future wife, and the Greek Goddess moved back to the Midwest.

    Now, we don’t know who will win next year’s presidential election. But the odds are that one of these years the world’s greatest nation will find itself ruled by a party that is aggressively anti-science, indeed anti-knowledge. And, in a time of severe challenges — environmental, economic, and more — that’s a terrifying prospect.

    Hi everyone! I’m back, and caught up on Project Runway. Joshua is indeed a selfish dickhead, but after mocking his own teammates in front of the judges on the runway, I’d have to say Burt’s the bigger jerk.

    "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
    • batgirl Aug 29,2011 11:47 am || Up

      Tell me about it! Any goodwill Burt built up during the casting episode has long since evaporated. EVERYONE seems to hate him, which is never a good sign. Anthony is also a self-important weasel.

      I just hated how the judges didn’t see what went down during the sewing, and then they actually praised Joshua for “pulling his team together despite their differences!” Um, yeah, if by “pulling them together” you mean reduce a teammate to tears in a bathroom stall, yeah, I guess he really did! And if he had tried hugging me after all that nonsense, I would have slapped him.

      Any why the heck did they make those poor people run around that track? Poor Oliver–his knee probably still hurts.

      • Future Ed Aug 29,2011 1:00 pm || Up

        I am baffled by that track thing. I get that they wanted to do a tie in, but there had to be a better way to do it. I really don’t think anyone wants to have the fastest designer win PR. More Evidence of Heidi’s madness, I think.

        I have $5. No I don\'t.
        • FreeSeatUpgrade Aug 29,2011 2:04 pm || Up

          Heidi’s grown too big to fail.

          "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
      • FreeSeatUpgrade Aug 29,2011 2:03 pm || Up

        Oddly, in previous years I’ve had the distinct impression that the producers did inform the judges of a lot of the dynamics within the sewing room, feeding runway questions which the judges otherwise couldn’t possibly have known to ask. But that didn’t seem to happen in the latest episode; otherwise you’d expect them to have hit Becky with “you need to take ownership over your design, not blame the direction you got from your team captain.” Instead, they did they exact opposite, praising the “leadership” of Joshua, who in another era would have been fragged by his battalion spangly-uniformed soldiers.

        If I was the last designer cut during the casting episode I’d be pretty pissed at Cecilia.

          so this season gets back on track, huh? [sigh] okay, I guess I’m not busy anyhow.

          BTW, you guys, I’ve been going to a lot more meetings and participating in a lot more AA stuff. Is it noticeable?

          • FreeSeatUpgrade Aug 29,2011 3:22 pm || Up

            Depends…have you started smoking cigarettes? This Harper’s article earlier this year suggested that cigarettes were as common a bond among AA participants as there is.

            Your level of interesting loquaciousness remains strong as ever, but you seem to be more prolific of late, at least here at the Kraut. So I’ll take that as a good sign.

              It’s an odd phenomenon, because over the course of my life in twelve-step meetings, I’ve gone through what essentially qualifies as the ban of smoking in the meetings.

              The first thing to recall is that most of the meetings are held in churches. We occasionally will have a community center of one sort of another. Here in Santa Rosa, the City Hall Employees Lounge hosts a number of meetings. But, by and large, churches. That’s true in South Bend, Indiana, Lafayette, Pleasant Hill, Santa Rosa, Richmond, Berkeley, California, Gallipolis, Ohio, Chicago, and Sarasota, Florida, so I’m going to assume it’s that way everywhere. Not normally in the nave, mind you, but occasionally. They’re normally like in the bible school parts or some offshoot little room.

              In the 70s, when I went to Alateen with my dad, they used to smoke A LOT in the meetings. EVERY meeting we went to, regardless of where, there was smoking. That was Indiana, though, and presumably they were significantly less stringent about any kind of restrictions.

              I went through rehab for the first time in 1990 in Indiana, the winter before I left Indiana for good. If a state-run place in Elkhart, Indiana, in December, 1990 where they use attack therapy sounds depressing, it’s because it was. I was 20 years old and in this facility with several men who had spent some quality time at the Michigan City state prison. Still, even then, there were quite a few smoking meetings–the trend by this time was not nearly as many church meetings, basically I think because the churches decided they didn’t want people smoking in the buildings.

              When I finally did get sober in rehab, it was in Calistoga in 1994 at the laid-back place in August, where we would spend about three or four hours a day at the pool. Hard to believe that this place got me sober and the other didn’t. Upon reflection, it doesn’t really matter, but there were some stark contrasts between the two places I went through.

              I moved to Santa Rosa, to escape moving back in with my roommate/cocaine dealer in Lafayette. At that time, there was only one smoking meeting left in Santa Rosa, despite the stories that the old timers told. It was a privately-owned halfway house on the south side of town. Still, people would smoke right outside the meetings. Two of my favorite were at the City Hall, because they both would break in the middle of the meeting for “fellowship” time–namely, we could all recuse ourselves outside and suck down a couple of butts.

              Now, most places don’t even want you to smoke on their property. At the same City Hall meeting, where you basically had to run the gauntlet of smokers to get to the meeting room, they don’t even want us to smoke in the parking lot. In fact, a lot of meetings either have designated smoking areas or make you leave the grounds entirely. We’ve lost meeting locations before because people are careless with their cigarette butts, and several meetings have designated butt men and women to make sure the place is clear of butts before we leave.

              I haven’t smoked for over a decade, so none of this affects me. Most of my friends have quit. My current roommate, who was also an ex-roommate, smoked until about six weeks ago, and he quit because they won’t replace his hip if he doesn’t (they say it stunts the healing process), and I see him struggle with it. He and I were the last people I knew that smoked in our house/apartment. It was disgusting, in retrospect. He’s been smoking a pipe lately, behind the back of his girlfriend, so I’m not sure he’s not back to smoking…

                and that’s probably WAY more info than anyone wants. Though, I will say again, if any of you EVER have any questions about sobriety for either you or someone you love, please feel free to ask me. I am not an authority, but I have lived it for going on two decades now and I worked in the field for a while.
