New guy can haz strikeouts. Yay.
25 yo reliever…. meh
Yeah, but when we trade Bailey, realize Balfour is out for the season, and DFA FUUUUUUUUUUU…
9 K/9 and 3 BB/9 will do just fine.
3.8… big difference
Oh. Right. Going too fast through B-R. That is a big difference.
Yeah… if he had a 3 walk rate I would be supportive of this. But take out his numbers when he was way too old for his initial placement and its not like hes a K machine or never walks anyone.
Huh. Wonder if the A’s are kicking in any $$$.
Yes
How much? And wherefore didst thou hear this?
Ick.
Rockies paying $1M, which means the A’s are kicking in about $2M.
OK.
Initial reaction is, the A’s got Billings as a set-up to deal one of their vet bullpen arms.

Seriously. PROVEN CLOSER ON THE MARKET. DID YOU HEAR THAT CARDINALS?!?
Please shout louder
IS THIS THING ON???
One of my favorite memories of the early 2000s teams was sneaking away from my pre-wedding duties at my sister in laws nuptials to listen to the bottom of the ninth of the alds game 5. Ellis’s three run jack was a great, if ultimately fleeting, moment.
Great memory for me too. I ducked into a bar in Anchorage just in time for the 9th inning; everyone else in the bar were Twins fans.
Poppy, Mark’s gone to live on a farm in Colorado …
I don’t like it.
yeah Im kinda Meh on it.
I mean, the question is whether this new guy is worth buying for $1M. Because Ellis is done.
I would say yes he is worth 1m. However, I still think you could get a better deal (assuming the PTBNL is absolute filler).
why do you say that?
Because it allows me to complain?
Seriously, I think lower minors players with upside are better than this kind of situation than AAA reliever with a low 2 k/BB rate, you might hit bigger.
I dunno. I think in an ideal world, running a quality reliever factory is a great way to add franchise value. Which is why we should absolutely trade Bailey and move on to the next one.
WE SHOULD HAVE KEPT ELLIS AND MADE HIM CLOSER
Thats a fair criticism. I just hate seeing all these little moves that laterally aren’t getting us anywhere when we need to have a huge talent infusion to not fall on our faces.
I understand. But we did just get Sizemore essentially for free, and that’s something.
Your comment is why the offseason sucked so much, but not why doing things like this is a bad idea.
Well sort of. I think the Purcey trade was a bad idea. We were very lucky that Detroit was willing to give us anything of value for a poor out of options reliever.
Well that’s part of it though. Purcey gave us a couple clean innings, and the Tigers got excited.
Given how volatile RP seasons are, grabbing ’em and then moving the hot ones is a good way to win trades.
But you’re right, I never understood why we got Purcey.
I still think you’re making an assumption that the A’s “got lucky” the Tigers were so excited about Purcey.
I think there’s a fair chance that the A’s knew of Detroit’s interest in Purcey and weaseled their way into the conversation.
Besides, call it a cliche but there’s always SOMEONE interested in a LH pitcher with a pulse… especially when said lefty throws 90+.
I guess but I think its really suspect to believe that youll get full value when you have to DFA the guy.
Yeah, my phone crashed and I think it’s from people calling or texting me.
And by the way, I changed the title of this post because if it’s going to be rosterbation and “what’s good/bad about it” in TRADE terms, my name belongs nowhere near the title. If my name isn’t on it, I’ll remember to avoid it.
I has a sad.
You must be watching the A’s play, then.
Amen brother.
Ellis was projected as a type A FA????? ugggg why did we trade him for filler then. Put Weeks in CF.
It’s really irrelevant cause the A’s, and no other team really, would’ve offered him arbitration.
I could have seen a scenario where Billy offered arb with a tacit agreement that Mark wouldn’t accept.
But, yeah.
But you would still need another team to be willing to give up a first round pick to sign him.
Thus (most likely) leaving Ellis unemployed next season.
this. Also when it says im posting too quickly it seems like my mom is telling me not to eat so fast.
You could choke.
unlikely… i am the garbage disposal
Even garbage disposal’s get clogged.
right, but then we should have kept him.
To keep him as a bench player? Who is honestly miscast at 1B, 3B and can’t play SS.
So Mark Ellis the uber-limited bench player is a more valuable property to the Oakland A’s than $1 million in savings, a 25 year old RP with an option remaining and a PTBNL.
I just think that if you were going to eat 2m you should have gotten one better prospect. Assuming that the PTBNL is just AA roster filler/clubhouse guy.
You could be making a fair argument.
I’m just waiting for the PTBNL to get announced before forming a strong opinion on the matter.
Im reserving my right to change my opinion based on the PTBNL.
Highly Improbable/Impossible Speculation Gone Wild:
A) CGon, but only after the season and if the Rockies make the playoffs with Ellis’ help
B) Ellis, after the Rockie’s season is over he comes back to the A’s so that the A’s can offer arbitration and get the pick.
He would have accepted arb.
With this season he wouldn’t get very much, plus you can cut him and only be liable for like 45 days of pay in ST.
Exactly how great of a deal do you expect to get for an oft-injured and non-hitting 2B in his 30’s? Plus you don’t know who the PTBNL is.
You could at least hold off on the woe until we’ve seen the whole deal.
a legit C prospect with mediocre performance but tools. Ladendorf type
Keep in mind that that whole compensation thing might not apply
I know.
NM please tell it to let me talk as much as I want!
It should only be a couple seconds you have to wait between posts.
CENSORSHIP!fixed.CENSORSHIPYou’re really not allowed to say that DFA -The Lack of Powers that Be.
fixed.
I’ll miss Mark. I’m very glad he’s going somewhere where he can play everyday. He’s just a great guy all around.
Brief scouting report on Billings: The right-hander’s best pitch is his fastball, which sits in the 90-93 MPH range with good movement. He also has a slider and an inconsistent change-up.
Per Scout.com
Does he take his unicorn to Colorado with him?
If an Ellis rides into town on a Friday…
This makes me sad. I started following baseball in 2002, when I was on my high school’s softball team and just starting to understand the game. I played second base (because my arm was not strong enough for any other position). So when I went to my first A’s game, I looked to see who was playing second. It was Ellis. Ten years later… I’m just glad we had him for this long. (Also, glad it wasn’t the Giants.)
I may have to make the Rockies my NL team. Of course, that would involve actually paying attention to the NL…
Interesting… I always thought you were older.
Well, I suppose it’s good to know that my fangirl-ness at AN doesn’t make me sound like a teenager. (I’m 24.)
I just think everyone that is there is older than me for some reason.
Well, shoes is also incredibly sheltered and shy/scared of internetz weirdos, which I have come to believe is a clever ruse.
It is my belief that shoes is a 68 year-old Jamaican man.
No, that’s me.
I know you…you just have the body of a 68 year-old Jamaican man.
Jah, Mon.
Ellis may have been the best defensive player I have ever seen on an everyday basis. If he had been healthy, perhaps the only playoff game I’ve been to in person would have turned out better (Game 2 ALCS).
He (and Kotsay) really deserved GGs for their efforts and were the only players I legitimately was mad that they got shunted for awards since I’ve become a diehard. I hope he does well in the NL West and it would hurt me a little bit less to see Miggy miss the playoffs this season (has he played in the playoffs since ’03 btw?) if Ellie made it instead.
Better than Chavez?
Not in my mind. That said, he was a great find at a time when we just could not find a useable second baseman.
Jose Ortiz saiz hi
And we had Durham for awhile. But there was a string of top prospects who failed.
I’ll miss you Mark…best return on my player jersey tee-shirt investment ever.
Can Unicorns live at altitude?
Unicorn tears
Unicorn origami!
It also means that Stand and Deliver knows Han is an android.
Hey, where’d my Hobo With a Shotgun photo go?
Is it just me or is anyone else uniformly disappointed by everything that Neyer writes on SBN?
I think we’re unanimous on that. Prevailing theory here is that he himself doesn’t actually write any of it — Blez gave him a sinecure and a couple of interns. He’s being paid solely for his brand-name value, and his time is free to write books.
That would make a lot of sense, but just scrolling over to his Ellis trade and it was just as if he didn’t know what the hell was going on. I mean hes suppose to be a big sabr guy and yet hes using OPS+ and phrases like the team is just due for some luck.
He’s not “a big sabr guy” per se — he was the … oh, I dunno, I guess if Bill James was John the Baptist, then Neyer *is* Jesus, but more like the Historical Jesus.
Anyway, he’s always been a popularizer, not an innovator. And even before jumping from espn, he had been coasting for a couple years intellectually, not keeping up except in a shallow way etc etc.
But what gets published under his name at SBN — not only is it checked-out and uninteresting and shallow and sloppy, it’s not even in Neyer’s voice.
Id like to think if my job was writing about baseball I could come up with a lot more interesting shit. Hell I would probably even spell check it if I was paid.
If I were being paid to not write about baseball, I would not write about baseball.
Wait. You are.
FUCK YOU, MONKEY! Oh….Neyer…um…yes, yes he is.
