        Yeah, but when we trade Bailey, realize Balfour is out for the season, and DFA FUUUUUUUUUUU…

        9 K/9 and 3 BB/9 will do just fine.

              Yeah… if he had a 3 walk rate I would be supportive of this. But take out his numbers when he was way too old for his initial placement and its not like hes a K machine or never walks anyone.

    One of my favorite memories of the early 2000s teams was sneaking away from my pre-wedding duties at my sister in laws nuptials to listen to the bottom of the ninth of the alds game 5. Ellis’s three run jack was a great, if ultimately fleeting, moment.

    • obliquè Jun 30,2011 10:39 pm || Up

      Great memory for me too. I ducked into a bar in Anchorage just in time for the 9th inning; everyone else in the bar were Twins fans.

                I dunno. I think in an ideal world, running a quality reliever factory is a great way to add franchise value. Which is why we should absolutely trade Bailey and move on to the next one.

                  Thats a fair criticism. I just hate seeing all these little moves that laterally aren’t getting us anywhere when we need to have a huge talent infusion to not fall on our faces.

                  I understand. But we did just get Sizemore essentially for free, and that’s something.

                  Your comment is why the offseason sucked so much, but not why doing things like this is a bad idea.

                  Well sort of. I think the Purcey trade was a bad idea. We were very lucky that Detroit was willing to give us anything of value for a poor out of options reliever.

                • nevermoor Jun 30,2011 3:57 pm || Up

                  Well that’s part of it though. Purcey gave us a couple clean innings, and the Tigers got excited.

                  Given how volatile RP seasons are, grabbing ’em and then moving the hot ones is a good way to win trades.

                  But you’re right, I never understood why we got Purcey.

                  I still think you’re making an assumption that the A’s “got lucky” the Tigers were so excited about Purcey.

                  I think there’s a fair chance that the A’s knew of Detroit’s interest in Purcey and weaseled their way into the conversation.

                  Besides, call it a cliche but there’s always SOMEONE interested in a LH pitcher with a pulse… especially when said lefty throws 90+.

      It’s really irrelevant cause the A’s, and no other team really, would’ve offered him arbitration.

          To keep him as a bench player? Who is honestly miscast at 1B, 3B and can’t play SS.

          So Mark Ellis the uber-limited bench player is a more valuable property to the Oakland A’s than $1 million in savings, a 25 year old RP with an option remaining and a PTBNL.

          • DFA Jun 30,2011 2:55 pm || Up

            I just think that if you were going to eat 2m you should have gotten one better prospect. Assuming that the PTBNL is just AA roster filler/clubhouse guy.

                  A) CGon, but only after the season and if the Rockies make the playoffs with Ellis’ help
                  B) Ellis, after the Rockie’s season is over he comes back to the A’s so that the A’s can offer arbitration and get the pick.

      If an Ellis rides into town on a Friday…

  14. whiteshoes40 Jun 30,2011 7:26 pm

    This makes me sad. I started following baseball in 2002, when I was on my high school’s softball team and just starting to understand the game. I played second base (because my arm was not strong enough for any other position). So when I went to my first A’s game, I looked to see who was playing second. It was Ellis. Ten years later… I’m just glad we had him for this long. (Also, glad it wasn’t the Giants.)

    I may have to make the Rockies my NL team. Of course, that would involve actually paying attention to the NL…

    Ellis may have been the best defensive player I have ever seen on an everyday basis. If he had been healthy, perhaps the only playoff game I’ve been to in person would have turned out better (Game 2 ALCS).

    He (and Kotsay) really deserved GGs for their efforts and were the only players I legitimately was mad that they got shunted for awards since I’ve become a diehard. I hope he does well in the NL West and it would hurt me a little bit less to see Miggy miss the playoffs this season (has he played in the playoffs since ’03 btw?) if Ellie made it instead.

      I think we’re unanimous on that. Prevailing theory here is that he himself doesn’t actually write any of it — Blez gave him a sinecure and a couple of interns. He’s being paid solely for his brand-name value, and his time is free to write books.

        That would make a lot of sense, but just scrolling over to his Ellis trade and it was just as if he didn’t know what the hell was going on. I mean hes suppose to be a big sabr guy and yet hes using OPS+ and phrases like the team is just due for some luck.

          He’s not “a big sabr guy” per se — he was the … oh, I dunno, I guess if Bill James was John the Baptist, then Neyer *is* Jesus, but more like the Historical Jesus.

          Anyway, he’s always been a popularizer, not an innovator. And even before jumping from espn, he had been coasting for a couple years intellectually, not keeping up except in a shallow way etc etc.

          But what gets published under his name at SBN — not only is it checked-out and uninteresting and shallow and sloppy, it’s not even in Neyer’s voice.
