        • batgirl Apr 1,2011 10:02 am || Up

          Well, Harold surely hasn’t mastered the fine art of unscripted drama suspense. He took all of 2 seconds to open and read that fan favorite card with absolutely no sense of ceremony. So that was Jen hollering in the background? Gads that host is insufferable.

    • batgirl Apr 2,2011 12:13 pm || Up

      OK, so I guess the coast is clear. I assume we’re all delighted that Richard pulled it out? It seemed to be a really close contest in the editing, though they saved more of the criticisms to come out at judges table. I was worried for Richard’s mental health had he lost. I loved the final challenge of making it a modified restaurant wars. Seemed a bit more interesting than just “cook the meal of a lifetime.”

      • sslinger Apr 2,2011 12:26 pm || Up

        Delighted is too strong a word for me – I think he deserved it for the body of work and overall excellence, but I was surprised at how at the end I was actually kind of pulling for Mikey. He really impressed me with the arc of his improvement, both from last time to this and actually within the season itself. And I liked that they both did great in the finale, and the winner was based on really being better, not just that someone blew it. It was also nice to see how everyone (including Jamie) contributed well in the kitchen.

        All in all, a very fun season.

          Ditto here, I was very happy with both the Blaise victory as well as Isabella’s rise to the top tier (he was my dark horse finalist pick). And I was worried for Blaise, as obsessing about past choking and failure in competition is often followed by more of the same.

    An A’s/FK mini-quiz: Trevor Cahill has 28 career wins. That doesn’t sound like a lot for an Opening Night starting pitcher, but 11 times in 43 previous seasons the A’s Opening Night starter has had fewer than 28 wins coming into the start. Highlight for the list:

    1. Vida Blue, 3 wins (1971)
    2. Carlos Reyes, 4 (1996)
    3. Dallas Braden, 6 (2009)
    T4. Ariel Prieto, 8 (1997)
    T4. Rick Langford, 8 (1978)
    6. Langford, 15 (1979)
    7. Chris Codiroli, 19 (1985)
    T8. Gil Heredia, 22 (1999)
    T8. Curt Young, 22 (1987)
    10. Blue Moon Odom, 25 (1969)
    11. Langford, 27 (1980)

    All right, so nobody got more than two or three of those. This is easier: the Oakland A’s Opening Night starter who had the most career wins coming into the start had 199 career wins and won his 200th career game that night. The answer to that one is:

      • batgirl Mar 31,2011 4:39 pm || Up

        All of the above, and it is for something very simple. I have an iron railing leading up some stairs to my front porch. I want to have a gate installed at the top of the stairs. It will be very simple in design–the current railing alternates straight bars and twisted bars. I’d love to match the railing, and don’t want to add any curls or flourishes. Then at the other end of the porch, I need a second gate attached between the side wall of the house and a very tall garden lattice wall. The idea is to close in the porch area so my dogs can hang around outside without the complicated leash tethering system I now use.

    Okay, so what else do we need to know to understand about this article? I know it’s not fashionable to do around here, but I’ll give a hint: it’s about requiring a conditional use permit for the iconic urban gardener.

    As a former “urban homesteader” in the ’70s on the other coast, I’ve enjoyed watching this phenomenon. Couldn’t this situation have been handled differently, as with a quiet change in the law?

    • sslinger Apr 1,2011 9:05 am || Up

      That’s too bad, but I have no doubt she’ll figure out how to keep doing what she’s doing without paying for the permit. Her book Farm City was a fun read, and she’s nothing if not creative in her approach to obstacles. She’s also one of the founders of Bio-Fuel Oasis (not sure if she’s still directly involved).

    • monkeyball Apr 1,2011 9:21 am || Up

      I dunno … after reading the article, I have about zero sympathy for her. She knew what she was doing was illegal from the get-go, apparently didn’t do anything by way of inquiry/lobbying/coalition-building. Sure, those laws ought to be changed, but this is the DFH version of Yglesias’ anti-pedicure-cartel whinging.

          No. Changing land use cannot be done overnight. The state proscribes a lengthy public process, which is actually just starting in Oakland. If they can amend the Planning code by September, that will be fast.

          In the meantime, while business licensing and planning can choose not to enforce current CUP requirements or what not, code enforcement cannot. When a neighbor rats you out (which is pretty much always how these things start), the code enforcement folks must inspect, and if they observe a violation, they must write it up, as a condition of their inspector’s license. What a city can (and I’d guess will) then do is forgive the fines, but the violation has to stay on the books until abated, or until the code changes.

                So here’s what was going on:

                Photobucket is an oEmbed provider, and I did not have the plugin embed thingy set to blacklist image tags. It is now.

                There’s still an issue if you want to use both direct image links (like yours) and photobucket oEmbeds in the same comment, but as long as you pick one or the other they’ll work.

                Annoyingly, photobucket is set up to provide a text link rather than an image. The oEmbed for the image above looks like this:

                http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a400/fenrislorsrai/coulterbooks.jpg

                but that’s a photobucket issue, not a FK issue

          It looks like Gameday is a Doubleclick page now >:-( . Configuring ABP to allow ad.doubleclick.net/adj/mlb.mlb/* allows Gameday to open.

            Ooooh, I do have an ad-blocker! I forgot. Out of sight, out of mind…

            Thanks, guys! :)

            Of course, I can’t figure out how to configure it. Should I just disable it when I want Gameday?

            • ptbnl Apr 3,2011 6:29 pm || Up

              You should have an option in the ABP drop-down menu to “disable on this page only”.

                I don’t have a drop-down menu… the only place I see the ad-blocker is in Safari preferences, I can enable/disable/uninstall from there. It doesn’t show in my app folder or in utilities, extensions, plug-ins, etc…

                  Probably. I’ll mess around tomorrow.

                  Some ad blockers if you shift-click on a link will allow ads on the new page.

                  Google might help with a built-in Safari blocker.

      Coldest I’ve ever been at a baseball game was this one.

      BBR thinks it was 42 and sunny, but it was really about 25 with flurries.

        Looks like someone at BBR got the start time wrong … can’t believe it was 42 and sunny at 7:11pm!

    Noted without comment or asterisks:

    in 2007, Denton had said that an active “commenter” community was an important way to build an audience for a site. Now, he told me, he has concluded that courting commenters is a dead end. A site has to keep attracting new users—the omnipresent screens were recording the “new uniques” each story brought to the Gawker world—and an in-group of commenters might scare new visitors off. “People say it’s all about ‘engagement’ and ‘interaction,’ but that’s wrong,” he said. “New visitors are a better indicator and predictor of future growth.” A little more than one-third of Gawker’s traffic is new visitors; writers get bonuses based on how many new viewers they attract.

      Bailey is hilarious.

      But his video game avatar is far too skinny.
