All aboard.
Not that it’s news but not encouraging:
30th and 29th are good, right? Right? Guys? Why are you all crying?
OK, so now should Gates be fired?
boots on the ground, boots on the ground
Sounds like if he’s wrong about the outcome he won’t need to be fired.
He’s publicly contravening (sekrit) official policy.
Good on Rand Paul
2: I read that because Neyer is in my RSS, and I don’t even know what he means.
4: Meh.
Just an FK PSA.
5: Good on Dick Lugar. We should stop paying that $4B and instead tax sugar, the net gain would be tremendous.
NO BLOOD FOR SUGAR
He is, by the way, the only Republican I’ve ever voted for. And, 22 years after I did so,he still has not made me regret it.
Jeez, I turn around and all of a sudden FK turns into Little Green Footballs.
Smart policy is smart

Would you FKers let me know when it’s safe to discuss Top Chef finale from last night. I know some of you have DVRed it and haven’t watched yet…
I’m ready. Will wait for others to check in. I haven’t watched the post-show show, but I figure I won’t be too put off by any spoilers about drunk Padma.
She wasn’t as drunk as Jen and Harold Deiterle.
I’m ready too – just finished watching it so I appreciate the restraint up til now.
Well, Harold surely hasn’t mastered the fine art of unscripted drama suspense. He took all of 2 seconds to open and read that fan favorite card with absolutely no sense of ceremony. So that was Jen hollering in the background? Gads that host is insufferable.
OK, so I guess the coast is clear. I assume we’re all delighted that Richard pulled it out? It seemed to be a really close contest in the editing, though they saved more of the criticisms to come out at judges table. I was worried for Richard’s mental health had he lost. I loved the final challenge of making it a modified restaurant wars. Seemed a bit more interesting than just “cook the meal of a lifetime.”
Delighted is too strong a word for me – I think he deserved it for the body of work and overall excellence, but I was surprised at how at the end I was actually kind of pulling for Mikey. He really impressed me with the arc of his improvement, both from last time to this and actually within the season itself. And I liked that they both did great in the finale, and the winner was based on really being better, not just that someone blew it. It was also nice to see how everyone (including Jamie) contributed well in the kitchen.
All in all, a very fun season.
Ditto here, I was very happy with both the Blaise victory as well as Isabella’s rise to the top tier (he was my dark horse finalist pick). And I was worried for Blaise, as obsessing about past choking and failure in competition is often followed by more of the same.
An A’s/FK mini-quiz: Trevor Cahill has 28 career wins. That doesn’t sound like a lot for an Opening Night starting pitcher, but 11 times in 43 previous seasons the A’s Opening Night starter has had fewer than 28 wins coming into the start. Highlight for the list:
All right, so nobody got more than two or three of those. This is easier: the Oakland A’s Opening Night starter who had the most career wins coming into the start had 199 career wins and won his 200th career game that night. The answer to that one is:
Any of you East Bay folk ever had any ironwork done at your homes? I need to get some gates made, and so far seem to only be attracting flakes and crooks.
What work are you looking to have done? Designing, making, installing or all of the above?
All of the above, and it is for something very simple. I have an iron railing leading up some stairs to my front porch. I want to have a gate installed at the top of the stairs. It will be very simple in design–the current railing alternates straight bars and twisted bars. I’d love to match the railing, and don’t want to add any curls or flourishes. Then at the other end of the porch, I need a second gate attached between the side wall of the house and a very tall garden lattice wall. The idea is to close in the porch area so my dogs can hang around outside without the complicated leash tethering system I now use.
Two folks The DogMa has worked with are (Luis) serratosiron.com 510.432.3444 and Jim Harris stairdesignonline.com 925.580.5416. Some of their work for her is displayed on each of those websites. By all means get bids, including what finishes you want — times are tough all over, including/especially in construction work so a good deal should be had by all. She invited your call at 925.413.3437 — tomorrow AM probably a good time. (The DogMa’s name is Sue.)
Ooooh groovy. I’ll ring her tomorrow!

That’s some kind of defense the Giants have.
When do they end up benching Miggy? May 15 or so?
Does anyone remember/know/recall why I’m convinced that Bobby Valentine hates the A’s?
Does anyone remember/know/recall why you would care?
There were the eight years he managed Texas, nearly all of which ended with his team trailing the A’s. But beyond that, I can’t think of anything. Maybe he feels our beloved Bay Area marine layer is bad for his tanned leathery skin.
I don’t know if this is right or wrong, but I’m going with it.
Words to live by.
Today’s LA Times has a glossary of Vin’s turns of phrase. I like “smoke rings” for zeroes on the scoreboard.
Love the photo hanging behind Vin in the booth tonight:
That was awesome, although a Donnybrook is more confusing than a Pier 6 Brawl…
Bwahahahaha!
Believe me, it’s way worse with the cap off.
Of the many comparisons in the btf thread, I liked Herb Tarlek.
When I was about 10 years old our local country club hosted a “celebrity” tennis tournament for charity. I volunteered to be one of the ball kids. My court had Frank Bonner and EZ from Three’s Company.
Which one snorted coke in the family station wagon?
Between Frank Bonner and Wavy Gravy, you could write a best-selling memoir of a well spent youth.
the Athletics and the Nationals make up for their low devotion by having the most friends
Okay, so what else do we need to know to understand about this article? I know it’s not fashionable to do around here, but I’ll give a hint: it’s about requiring a conditional use permit for the iconic urban gardener.
As a former “urban homesteader” in the ’70s on the other coast, I’ve enjoyed watching this phenomenon. Couldn’t this situation have been handled differently, as with a quiet change in the law?
That’s too bad, but I have no doubt she’ll figure out how to keep doing what she’s doing without paying for the permit. Her book Farm City was a fun read, and she’s nothing if not creative in her approach to obstacles. She’s also one of the founders of Bio-Fuel Oasis (not sure if she’s still directly involved).
I dunno … after reading the article, I have about zero sympathy for her. She knew what she was doing was illegal from the get-go, apparently didn’t do anything by way of inquiry/lobbying/coalition-building. Sure, those laws ought to be changed, but this is the DFH version of Yglesias’ anti-pedicure-cartel whinging.
I’m with MB
Reads like:
I, for one, am thankful for food safety regulations and hope they get expanded, not contracted. Even if it stops her from selling her produce.
Also, seriously?!?
US air power being pulled off of Libya detail to bomb her plot back into the stone age.
Bill and Novella are friends of mine, so I won’t comment on this but to say, their place is awesome. What she does is great (and Bill is a top notch ghetto mechanic, who I would recommend to anyone).
Seems to me that everybody missed the Big Picture — a seemingly positive urban development, centered-in/IDd with Oakland, now the source of derision all around. Win/win to lose/lose in one swell foop.
Speaking of the anti-pedicure-cartel whingding, didn’t you …
And when the Chinese family down the street starts raising and slaughtering pigs and chickens in ways that white people don’t like?
No. Changing land use cannot be done overnight. The state proscribes a lengthy public process, which is actually just starting in Oakland. If they can amend the Planning code by September, that will be fast.
In the meantime, while business licensing and planning can choose not to enforce current CUP requirements or what not, code enforcement cannot. When a neighbor rats you out (which is pretty much always how these things start), the code enforcement folks must inspect, and if they observe a violation, they must write it up, as a condition of their inspector’s license. What a city can (and I’d guess will) then do is forgive the fines, but the violation has to stay on the books until abated, or until the code changes.
Makes sense — thanks, man.
Christ, what abated violation

Hmm… I thought I’d added XKCD to the oEmbed thingy.
I give up… for today.
http://xkcd.com/880/
It looks like you already said that
I’m testing now.
I had a real battle last night trying to embed the Scully photo; it was like trying to battle the Honky Tonk Man in Wrestlemania, in fact. I couldn’t find an open tag but that’s the way the site was acting.
I don’t follow
Let’s see if it happens again here. Usually I copy the “Direct Link” from Photobucket, hit the img tag here and paste the link into the box. That wasn’t working last night. I finally copied the full HTML Code from Photobucket and got it to post that way.
See, that’s the same result I was getting last night. Where’s the open tag?
So here’s what was going on:
Photobucket is an oEmbed provider, and I did not have the plugin embed thingy set to blacklist image tags. It is now.
There’s still an issue if you want to use both direct image links (like yours) and photobucket oEmbeds in the same comment, but as long as you pick one or the other they’ll work.
Annoyingly, photobucket is set up to provide a text link rather than an image. The oEmbed for the image above looks like this:
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a400/fenrislorsrai/coulterbooks.jpg
but that’s a photobucket issue, not a FK issue
Aha, thank you. It looks like the image link instead of oEmbed is still the way to go with Photobucket.
Probably. Unless you want to just put text links to a number of images.
It’s an odd choice on photobucket’s part.
Hey all, sorry I haven’t been around – lost my p/w for awhile.
Anywho, sorry to be a nuisance, but I’m trolling for tickets (not internet troll, fishboat troll) for tonight’s game. It snuck up on me as sold out. Anyone got any spares lying around?
Today, Matt Holliday will follow up his great Opening Day (3-4, HR) with an emergency appendectomy.
Whaaa?
That sucks.
Well played, Arianna.

Does anyone do, use or trust an email marketing service?
We use MailChimp and love it. Easy to create nice looking emails, and I think the rates are pretty good. We only do 1-2 emails a month, so it may depend on how big your email list is and how often you intend to mail.
Plus the chimp is really cute and his daily sayings make me laugh.
Hey!
Thanks BG — checking them out.
Umm… holy shit new gameday is sexy.
Me like.
Doesn’t like Adblock Plus though.
Will the backdrops reflect the time of day/weather the game is being played in?
No it doesn’t, that was a bit of a bummer.
That’s an interesting question.
I tried to use Gameday for today’s game, and it wouldn’t open… nor would just an audio stream. Had to use Yahoo Game Channel instead. Probably shouldn’t have bothered, though.
Do you have any ad-blocker running? That’s what I saw till I disabled ABP on the gameday page.
It looks like Gameday is a Doubleclick page now >:-( . Configuring ABP to allow ad.doubleclick.net/adj/mlb.mlb/* allows Gameday to open.
Ooooh, I do have an ad-blocker! I forgot. Out of sight, out of mind…
Thanks, guys! :)
Of course, I can’t figure out how to configure it. Should I just disable it when I want Gameday?
You should have an option in the ABP drop-down menu to “disable on this page only”.
I don’t have a drop-down menu… the only place I see the ad-blocker is in Safari preferences, I can enable/disable/uninstall from there. It doesn’t show in my app folder or in utilities, extensions, plug-ins, etc…
Is Firefox an option?
Probably. I’ll mess around tomorrow.
Some ad blockers if you shift-click on a link will allow ads on the new page.
Google might help with a built-in Safari blocker.
Clever
I like that.
First pitch temperature at last year’s opener was 52°, supposed to be 68° tonight.

Coldest I’ve ever been at a baseball game was this one.
BBR thinks it was 42 and sunny, but it was really about 25 with flurries.
Looks like someone at BBR got the start time wrong … can’t believe it was 42 and sunny at 7:11pm!

In the lot! Row 12. Lovely breeze and leading edge wispy clouds cooling things down nicely.
So … we want an FK game thread, or do we want to continue to FREE KONVORE experiment?
I vote gamethread.

I somehow had never seen this before. I miss Bailey.
Where can we get some of them boomsticks?
Ash. Or you can go directly to the source and go to S-Mart.
I’ve watched that ad far too many times, and I still love it. Bailey!
Bailey is hilarious.
But his video game avatar is far too skinny.
