FKWiz/Grill 34

Has someone linked to the EloRater at Baseball-Reference yet?  It’s like Moneybutt (for those of you who remember that far back), except for realsies.  And it’s horribly addicting.  Onto the FKwiz…

1. Three active players have hit over 500 home runs.  Who are they?

2. Of those three, only one has hit over 500 doubles.  Who is he?

3. Four active players have hit over 500 doubles.  Who are they?

4. Combined, how many times have those four hitters led the majors in doubles?

5. The last time the AL doubles leader hit fewer than 40 doubles was 1974.  Which Oakland Athletic did it?

Answers in white text below; highlight to view.

1. A-Rod, Thome, Manny

2. Manny

3. Pudge, Manny, Helton, Abreu

4. Once (Helton, 2000)

5. Joe Rudi

    This is an interesting theory:

With temperature, the perception as dictated by the largest breweries is that beer is best served ice-cold. But of course anything you drink ice-cold is going to numb and retard your taste buds and nothing is good about that if you care about enjoying what you are ingesting.

I enjoy beer but I’m not a beer-ista. Some of you FKers probably have an opinion about this, right?

I thought that was a given, but then I was raised on “warm” English bitter.

Yeah, it’s true but (like everything) there are limits.

Drinking urine English bitters* at body temperature is not a pleasant experience, but you’re wasting your money if you heavily ice your nice beer. And I generally prefer Extra Cold Guinness to normal Guinness. If I had to guess an ideal temperature, I’d imagine it’s a touch colder than white wine, and well colder than red wine.

*I actually quite like bitters, and wish they were easier to obtain here.

Guinness, as we’ve discussed previously, is the beer most sensitive to transportation that I know of.

In Dublin it is sublime beyond compare – I don’t know why anyone would bother with anything else. But even as close as the west coast of Ireland it is noticeably different and you’d be better off with a Murphy’s (brewed more locally in County Cork).

By the time it reaches London it’s a passable but pale imitation of it’s former glory, and here in the US I generally find it to be undrinkable.

I completely agree about the quality decline.

I enjoy beer, but tend to commit all sorts of crimes against man and nature whilst consuming it, so it’s prudent for both me and you for me to not imbibe.

Pity, really. I loved the effect produced by alcohol. It was never about the taste for me. You sick FKs.

Random musings alert: I’m no chem-ista, but wouldn’t a lower temp also induce fewer aromatics? Maybe that’s a good thing for mass-produced, canoe-sex domestics? I don’t like beer warm, but cool is fine with me — then again, I have to admit those ‘grab some Buds’ commercials where they pull the bottles out of an ice/water bucket are strangely appealing. I do like water icy cold, so maybe that’s it?

My cargo on the return trip from Arizona included a couple cases of beers I can’t find locally; some of them are Arizona microbrews but I also have a 6-pack of the Bell’s Expedition Stout which, according to their Beer Finder, isn’t available anywhere in the West except Arizona. I imagine 50 degrees or so is the right temperature for that. I haven’t opened a bottle yet but with a blizzard moving in right now, one of those plus some Jimmer viewing could be in the plans a little later on.

Which reminds me: I saw this, which I assume to be a “strong-smelling, dark brown liquid” in the Tempe BevMo; sadly, I neglected to throw a couple bottles of it into my shopping cart.

Which in turn reminds me: had a bottle of the North Coast Old Stock Ale at a party last weekend. I don’t think I had come across this before even though apparently it’s been around for a while. Good stuff. Obviously not a session beer, but very drinkable: I sure wouldn’t have pegged it at 12% from the taste.

I’ve seen it at Whole Paycheck. Hadn’t looked at the description before — that sounds excellent.

That’s great — I want royalties. Denominated in beer. Sadly the website says they don’t have any distributors in our fair state.

The Bark has uploaded a tome I wrote about adopting old dogs.

Obviously, that’s not Rooney in the pic — this is Rooney. She cleaned-up pretty well. And here she is, several years later:

So, df, I will be doing this soon. I need a doggie, but I don’t really wanna potty train him or anything. Can I talk to you about it before I do?

Why does the lady in the Mercedes commercial say, “I was driving in Northern California…”? Usually I think something specific such as “I was driving on a mountain highway” or “I was on 80 in Sacramento” or some such. What message is the Northern California reference supposed to send?

Ok, that 50-foot 3 to tie was badass.

Just to avoid the compare-him-to-other-white-shooting-guards thing, I see some iverson in Jimmer.

Christ but the end of games is boring.

I will say that going into the first two games with UConn and BYU is working out better than it could have.

Man, they sure coulda used some inside help. Jimmer, I think, can be an effective weapon in the pros if he’s got a supporting cast. He normally shoots much better than he did yesterday.

I don’t follow the eastern ESPN leagues during the season much; I stick to the teams west of the Rockies. So it’s nice to have one survivor into the Elite Eight.

That second half was really quite something.

Although now I’ve sunk to 35/51 with half of my final four dead and I had Duke advancing to the finals.

          Watch KU lose too.

The ACC was terrible this year; that it got the most Sweet 16s is absurd.

Ah, Moneybutt. Those were the days.

Unfortunately, I apparently don’t really know enough about baseball to play this “for realsies” version. I’d much rather have to choose between Justin Duchscherer and a grilled cheese sandwich.
