Zero Displacement Grill 73

This grill will pick you up, and slap you back down again. You’ll end up right here.

Going up 1: I won’t fall into any traps about a talented person’s character, but the voice is awesome and it looks like Ted Williams is going to get a second chance. And fast.

Going down 1: There are a lot of nice people in Texas, along with a lot of crazies. Those nice people are in for some tough times.

Going up 2: The zombie lie about vaccines and autism is under thorough attack in a way that might actually help. Maybe kids won’t be subjected to that specific bit of stupid parenting much longer.

Going down 2: Maybe this whole Eurozone economic thing isn’t going to work. If that happens there are going to be a lot of pissed of Europeans, and that has been known to be bad for everyone.

Going up 3: Blylevin. Whether you draw the line above or below him, and you’d have to be a pretty small-hall person to draw it above, the fact that the internet got him in feels good to me. And before Morris. (h/t lenscrafters)

Going down 3: You have to wonder whether McGwire is ever going to get in. Seems to me like he should.

      Meh. Person with checkered past gets second chance is good. Lack of upward mobility in US is bad. Saying the second invalidates the first is agenda-pushing.

        The point about Quicken (if true in the way he baldly asserts it) is pretty valid.

        I don’t think he’s saying the 2nd invalidates 1st. “The American Dream” has always existed in many forms and always will, second chances are usually a good thing, and I’m happy to hear about this one in action. But it is very, very bad/lazy MSM reporting to just disregard the Quicken irony.

          I mean, I’m all for loan modification programs but I don’t know what else a mortgage company is supposed to do when the mortgage isn’t paid for long enough.

          I am aware of the ownership issues, etc. but I haven’t heard that Quicken is doing anything illegal. Maybe I just missed it.

            Fair ’nuff… I don’t know if they did anything illegal, either. Also, I think one of the more insidious tendrils of The Dream is “home ownership whether you can afford it or not” — but I don’t know whether Quicken was involved in the egregious debt-enabling.

            He was a terrific writer and his feverish way of constructing a novel was amazing, and the only model I have thought would work for me. In fact, I’ve constructed essays according to his model.

            He would come up with different bits of the story, write each bit down, tape up all bits on the walls around him and create/rearrange the narrative that way. It is quite a visual tool, and works quite well, still.

            I love THE CRACK-UP. THE GREAT GATSBY was impressive. He lived well outside his means, married the wrong lady, and drank way, way too much–all sins of which I’m guilty.

              the great gatsby is one of my favorite books, but i haven’t read it almost eight years and damned if i remember much of it. i should re-read it.

        My understanding is that the quote is quite relevant and insightful, as it refers to cinema/dramatic acts — as in, everyone wants to skip right from the setup to the payoff — and that the dumb old aspect is the interpretation wherein people think it means “In America, you get one shot and then you’re done.”

          “He’s saying that the past is always with us. Where we come from, what we go through, how we go thought it all this shit matters. Like at the end of the book, ya know, boats and tides and all. It’s like you can change up, right, you can say your somebody new, you can give yourself a whole new story. But, what came first is who you really are and what happened before is what really happened. It don’t matter that some fool say he different cuz the things that make you different is what you really do, what u really go through. Like, ya know, all those books in his library. He frontin with all them books, but if you pull one down off the shelf, none of the pages have ever been opened. He got all them books, and he hasn’t read nearly one of them. Gatsby, he was who he was, and he did what he did. And cuz he wasn’t willing to get real with the story, that shit caught up to him.”

        • nevermoor Jan 10,2011 9:44 am || Up

          That’s interesting. I hadn’t heard that interpretation before, but it makes a lot more sense to think “skip from 1 to 3” instead of “only get one shot”

          Any support/link? I’d like to see more.

    My “I’d probably actually prefer a guy like Gruden” sensors are tingling now that people are talking about $8M/year for Harbaugh.

    It isn’t, after all, like college coaches always transition well. Or that Harbaugh wasn’t blessed with Heisman-worthy talent in Gerhart and Luck.

          If my understanding is right, and draftees this year have to sign contracts and bonuses under the next CBA anyways, he’s basically just saying he’d rather play another year at Stanford and be the #1 pick NEXT season instead of leaving now and playing for Carolina.

            And that way, when Harbaugh crashes-and-burns the Niners to an 0-16 season, they can draft him.

            Oh, but H is going to the Dolphins anyway.

              Potentially. Except there have been no official reports of basically ANYTHING yet, aside from this as near as I can tell:

              – Harbaugh had a verbal agreement with SF on a deal.
              – Miami stepped in at the 11th hour to try and get in on Harbaugh.
              – Harbaugh and Ross have University of Michigan ties, so Harbaugh listened.
              – Miami has not fired Sparano
              – Miami has not interviewed a minority candidate to satisfy the Rooney Rule
              – Rumors flying that they are willing to go $8M per year or more if necessary to get Harbaugh in Miami
              – SF’s offer was 5M per season

              Basically just a shitload of twitter and other random internet speculation. Who friggin knows.

              And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

                And most recently, word has come out that Harbaugh is not sold on Miami despite being able to purchase over 14,000,000+ Jack-in-the-box tacos with their offer.
                Denver is now trying to contact him, and Stanford made an offer earlier today.
                The thing I do not get, is why the 49ers felt they could low-ball him? I read that Stanford’s latest offer, with performance bonuses, would be worth more than the 9ers. I understand not wanting to overpay, but when Jedders comes out and says “money is not an option” or “we are going to be patient in our GM search”, he loses even more credibility.
                Anyways, the Miami news is positive for the 9ers.

                • nevermoor Jan 6,2011 8:36 pm || Up

                  To be fair, he isn’t worth $8M/year. $5M is double what Singletary got.

      funny story. Famous old-timey Giant Fred Merkle’s grandson graduated from the high school down the block from us. he went on to become a cryptographer of some note and now sits on the board of directors for Alcor, who has ted williams frozen head. also a graduate of the high school: randy johnson. a real hub of baseball weirdness, that school.

    Clever. I particularly like this:

    Article III. Judges shall strictly construe this Constitution, and we mean strictly, and shall under no circumstances cite, refer to, read or mention at cocktail parties or cookouts any principle or provision of International Law.

    Suspected Terrorists shall be taken to Guantanamo and drawn and quartered in a public ceremony. Trials are optional, but if they occur, must be conducted in a Military Tribunal in which coerced statements are admissible so long as they support a Guilty verdict.

    Question for anyone who wishes to read, how much is too much to spend on a laptop? I am generally not a gamer (I will play Half-life on rare occasions, and will probably give Diablo III a go), and probably the biggest requirement is that it will not skip a beat if I am working remotely from home. I probably would lean towards a smaller monitor as opposed to a tank, and would need a PC or a Macbook that can dual-boot (but that would probably cost to much).

    Currently I have one of the last IBM Thinkpads, and have been mildly disappointed.
    Any recommendations, must have specs., or things to avoid overpaying for are appreciated.

    • nevermoor Jan 6,2011 8:37 pm || Up

      For non-gamers, the single best thing you can do for performance is to buy a SSD (which is admittedly pricey) and plenty of RAM. Don’t worry about processor speed.

    #2, E&J bbq, #6, Kindaids, #9, Rockin Crawfish and #10, Lake Chalet, would all be within walking distance of an A’s ballpark at the Victory Court site. I’d still prefer a ballpark down in SJ Diridon, but failing that the VC site really is a good one.
