Where the FK *is* Beltre going to end up? 22

A’s seem to be out, after making perhaps one additional offer we didn’t know about.

Rangers seem to be out, not really having payroll or roster room.

Slegna still seem like most apt, but no one in the national press seems to realize their payroll/budget/revenue constraints.

And Boras seems to be eliminating suitors left and right.

I really have no idea — and at this point, I might prefer that he just ends up anywhere outside of the AL West.

    I don’t know where Beltre ends up… at least Boras hasn’t come out and said his client is considering an opportunity in Japan yet!

    This morning my son came running down stairs and said there was a rainbow in his room. I went upstairs and sure enough, the sunlight was hitting his glass of water just right and there was a rainbow on his bed. We talked a bit about refraction and the color spectrum… he’s 7 years old and he understands the basics of how rainbows are made. He got this big grin on his face and said he wanted to keep the rainbow in his room all day. Then he sat back down to play with his newest Bakugan.

    It just makes me happy that my son can understand how the magic is made… yet he still enjoys the magic for what it is. When was the last time you had a rainbow in your room and appreciated it as such?

      Nice.

      Refraction is – to me – about as magical as basic science gets. It’s neat stuff.

      Can you put this on Facebook, and then friend me so I can Like it?

        I’m afraid grover doesn’t have a Facebook account. That’s one of the few places on the Internet where Nathan is the point o’ contact.

        But I’m glad you like the story.

          But… then who’s this?

            Upper case G – that’s no grover.

      familiarity breeds contempt. in my daily life i work with optical materials, and messing around with refractive indices makes up a big portion of what i do. it’s really easy to get lost in the details and forget how freaking cool a lot of natural phenomena actually are.

    It has to be the Angels. They have the need / location and have already made a substantial offer. If he really wants west coast, there isn’t really a viable mystery team left.

      Regardless of Beltre’s actual feelings, I think the promulgation of “West Coast” was just a negotiating tactic. He’ll go with the biggest offer.

    Thoughts on where the teams stand right now, on-paper win-wise?

    I have the Angels at 83, A’s at 85, and the Rangers at 90.

    Beltre -> Angels = Angels 86, A’s 85, Rangers 90

    • ptbnl Dec 30,2010 7:18 pm || Up

      Given the amount of inter-division play, shouldn’t a boost for the Angels be accompanied by a drop for the A’s and Rangers?

      If this is His will, He's a son of a bitch.

        You’re probably right. As this is just a straight totaling of the current WAR of the teams, I’m not sure how to factor that in. I suspect it probably wouldn’t be more than one win lost for both Texas and Oakland.

    I thought salb’s guess the other day that he winds up with an out-of-the-picture non-contender like Baltimore rang true.

      yeah, i’m still calling baltimore.

        I think I endorse this scenario.

          UZR is a questionable judge of defensive skill.

          Having issued the disclaimer, if you grant UZR any value at measuring defensive skill than the numbers say Reynolds has gotten better at 3B. Perhaps no worse than -5 runs, which when you factor the huge swing in positional value between 3B and 1B means it would be almost batshit insane for the Orioles to move Reynolds across the diamond in order to facilitate Beltre.

          Beltre to Baltimore represents a win for Boras’ way of life and a payday for Adrian Beltre. It doesn’t represent a significant upgrade for Baltimore unless Reynolds continues to hit under .200. In which case, he wouldn’t be an asset at 1B either.

              Meh.

              A variant of that story has been running for over a week now. Signing Beltre makes all kinds of sense for the Angels and if they do so they undercut everything the A’s have done to improve themselves thus far.

            forgot about reynolds.

            i guess i meant that he would end up with the abstraction that is baltimore, not baltimore itself. the astros, maybe the blue jays?

            • grover Dec 31,2010 5:24 pm || Up

              Blue Jays make some sense, assuming they can handle the payroll.

              The Astros? Only if Beltre’s a complete and total mercenary.

              So had I.

              Plus, they just signed Derrek Lee.

              Though these guys still think Beltre would fit, if they move Reynolds to DH.
