Alright people, listen up. I want you to drop (in) and give me 20 (ideas). This is not a grill.
So far, the things on my list are:
No WP3 for you guys.
1) Seeing if updating to WP3 will break everything
2) A button to allow editors to move a whole thread to another place (if you dump a link in a non-grill, for example)
3) Comment self-editing for everyone
4) A look at the aggressiveness of replying comment indents
5) A look at permissions for our two groups of users (pre-random-cutoff, and post-random-cutoff
Give me more.
Here at FK, we have the best tech support money can’t buy.
Inspired by the above, having new unread posts be highlighted even if no-one has posted a comment yet.
Good one.
Done. Unvisited zero comment posts will show up in the unread comments widget showing “(NEW)” instead of the number of unread comments.
Excellent!
Mobile app
Have you tried this?
Ah, no. Interesting. I’ll give that a shot.
Looks like it should work with hosted sites like FK, but (of course) no promises that my hacks will work through it.
What would it take for me to have admin privileges?
I’m looking into IOS app stuff, but I need to be able to look at what’s going on under the hood.
General trustworthiness and a FKing reason.
I’ve hooked you up, and feel free to email me any questions you might have.
Thanks! I’ve decided that I’d rather spend my free time learning iOS instead of learning patent translation. Sure, the patent stuff could be solid money, but man, I hate life when I’m doing it.
Good luck!
Android version :-X
Thanks, and go As.
Solutions to the weird IE-only dynamics I’ve noted before:
1. The odd way comments sometimes become invisible (you can see the borders, comment/commenter info, and avatar but not the comment itself). But then scrolling down then back up makes the text re-appear. But not always or consistently.
2. The way that sometimes the text one writes in the comment drafting box doesn’t wrap correctly, so that I can’t actually see all of what I’ve written while drafting it.
3. That strange banner font color issue we ID’d the other day.
4. Don’t know if this last one is also IE-only or not, but when posting a brand new “top” comment in a thread (in other words, not an issue when replying to someone else’s comment), the “new comment is posting, please wait a minute” message becomes a never-ending loop until the page is reloaded. Note that this is only an issue for what I see; the comment itself always does post correctly.
And I am perfectly happy to live with all these very minor problems if it the cure should prove intractable, or spawn worse problems that affect people who use non-horrible browsers.
3 is fixed.
2: I think this is a problem that can’t be fixed while still having a flexible-length comment area. Which is probably more important.
I’ve tried a fix for 1. Let me know if the problem continues.
I won’t be back at work until Jan. 3, so it’ll be awhile. Thanks very much for thinking of those of us Microshackled at work.
No problem.
I’m not sure I can fix 4 either (the code is not mine, and often commented in foreign characters), but I’m going to give it a go.
I believe it’s Chinese, if I’m thinking of the right plugin.
TWSS
Probably.
The Micro chains still on over here, and so far it looks good. I have always had the problem off and on, so if this changes I will speak up.
Great.
Sad to report, back at work and IE’d again, that the occasional comment invisibility problem still persists. But as before, it always goes away after a couple quick page up/page down moves, so not a big deal.
Minor problems # 2 and 4 also seem to still persist.
Shoot!
I was feeling pretty good about that one.
solution: quit your job
works for me.
4: Can’t follow the code to see what’s different at the moment. I’ll try again later.
It will. Bummer.
4) What do you folks think about capping the number of indent levels? My biggest pet peeve in long threads is when the replies devolve into one-word-per-line blocks that 1) make the thread super long and a huge pain to read on a mobile device and 2) make the comments themselves painful to read on any platform. I’d prefer to cap the indent level at some value (say, 5?) after which all replies appear at the same level.
The only thing I have figured out capping the depth of replies (currently 15 I think), but I have not figured out how to allow deeper replies with no indent. I’m open to reducing the max nesting level or reducing the indent each level (or both) but I’m wondering what you guys think.
I want as much access and power as you’re willing to give me!
In this country, you gotta make the monkey first. Then when you get the monkey, you get the power.
What the fuck you talking about? My bananas are legit. I wouldn’t even be around here if it wasn’t for the monkey. Monkey done invite me in to this lil’ soiree… much to the dismay of a few, I’m sure.
you’re stupid. 80s more than 78.
You’re one of the insipid assclowns who turned iglew’s straw man bullshit green, aren’t you?
And since it’s been the meme…
Banned.
Heh.
The new threads with >0 comments are showing at “new” in the autorefresh sidebar, rather than showing the number of comments.
I like new threads to show the number of comments, since, if I’m in a rush and there are >10 comments I’ll come back to it later without clicking on it.
Ah, gotcha.
I’ll look at that.
Fixed.
New now means an unread post with 0 comments.
thx
I’m still having the problem that every time I open FK or return to the main page from a post, it does not show the “new” comments area. Instead of seeing the list of posts with new comments, I see “…loading…” I have to hit refresh each time in order to see the new comments area.
This happens on both of my work computers and both my laptops all running on Firefox.
That’s really really strange.
Does it happen for anyone else?
I’ve had that happen a handful of times for a short period, usually on the home Firefox/Mac rig. I’ve always just blamed the crappy underpowered Mac and/or the lame SBC DSL speed.
I had that happen a long while ago on Safari, but it’s consistently fine now.
Did this ever get fixed for batgirl? I’m playing around with the No Script add-on for Firefox tonight, and when I forbid freekraut.com from running scripts I get that “loading…” message under Unread Comments. So perhaps this is something involving batgirl’s Firefox security settings.
Could be.
When you had it on, did the comments work normally or did they break too?
The only other thing that breaks is the Reply button. Using No Script to forbid freekraut.com produces the same result as disabling JavaScript in Tools–>Options–>Content. And I don’t see anything in the Advanced options there that would prevent the Unread Comments from reloading. I’ve tried several configurations and I can’t break the Unread Comments without also breaking the Reply button, so I haven’t been able to duplicate batgirl’s issue.
Yeah. The Unread Comments load with a Javascript timer and AJAX, but lots of site functions rely on those elements (the Z key, for example, is JS and posting comments is AJAX)
Still happening for me on all computers. So if you do find that it’s a Firefox security thing, let me know. I’d love to fix it. Or, I guess I should more accurately say, if you could explain where/how I adjust these settings, that would be great!
My only request would be for a Top button so in a long thread, instead of having to scroll up to the top to see if there are new unread comments you could just hit the button and go up there.
I use the home key for that.
Thanks, and go As.
Why, thank you sir!
Speaking of slinger’s home key…how was the hoedown last night?
It was an excellent solstice time, though it’s too bad none of you FKers could make it. (Batgirl, I hope you’re feeling better.) More kids in the house than it has seen in years. We made tamales using lard in the dough from a guy (who was there) who raises 300-lb wooly pigs in Montana, which is not only pretty cool but they make the best tamales. Good fun all around, thanks for asking.
I wish I could’ve been there…
Ditto
I’m just trying to push through til the weekend when I can sleep. My cold misery was further compounded when I was leaving work on Tuesday. I was rushing to get to the post in time to drop off yet another stack of holiday orders (yay holiday orders!). I was running late and my youngest dog was yet again dragging her heels on jumping into the car. Just as I was bending over to lift her into the car she decides to jump…straight into my chin…and I apparently had my tongue sticking out. Damn near bit the end off. Ouch. Lots of blood and even today a great deal of pain.
I’m so sorry to have missed your shindig. I was really looking forward to it and I appreciated the invite :) I think I feel a bit better today.
My mini has no home key…
Mine does.
where, sal?
Upper right hand corner, from right to left, I see (small) keys for delete, insert, end, and home.
I got delete, insert and wifi…sad lb is sad…
You weren’t hanging out with batgirl last night, were you?
Dell mini or mac mini?
Some macs use the arrow keys as home/pg up/pg/down/end keys.
If yours is a mac, try holding the fn key and pressing the right arrow.
I hear it works with HP minis, too.
works for me.
Woohoo! Thanks JL and tFKerfkagso! I wasn’t aware of either of those trickses.
It’s like magic, huh, Poppy?
[please note the use of capitals]
My computer has an FK key.
OooooooH! Not fn and right (that goes bottom), but fn and left! Thank you, JL!
It’s an HP, btw. I got it free through Verizon.
Oops, that’s what I meant, actually. I use the end button more than the home button. Merry Christmas.
ho ho ho! Thank you, Santa JL!
I’m going to consider this one resolved.
I guess we have a user category where posts need to be approved before being published. Probably want to change that.
Do we? Are we still needing to approve first comment by new user, and if so, why wouldn’t we want to approve first post by new user?
Dunno whether it’s first post, or all posts. First comment, sure, yes — but after they’re in, I figure they’re in.
Can someone make a post without first making a comment?
Well, I think they could make one before making a comment, but it won’t be published until the comment/their user status/their post is approved.
Can we make it so they have to
refer to us as Godsuse anodyne headlines on their posts?Should be fixed.
