1. Without commentary on the political orientation, I thought this campaign ad was clever, with the ending being quite funny. Simple message, memorable visual.
2. Good for this kid for working hard and going to college but…well, hopefully there’s not too much of a debt load when he graduates, because it’s hard to imagine much coming out of that ethnic studies major (unless, like my ethnic studies major classmates, he goes to law school). I’ve always wondered why some kids, when they are first in their family to go to college, take on high-risk, low-reward majors while others go straight for the business/accounting/STEM degrees that give them at least a chance to make the money their families never had. If you come from poverty and/or racism, I guess I can see the appeal in turning inward on society and studying the roots of those issues. Still, I think that college is too often sold as a “life of mind” four-year summer camp instead of an investment. With the cost of college and the money at stake, I think the scales are tipping to the investment side.
3. BaBye BaZito.
1. Purely on form, I disagree. “Literalize a metaphor with the visual”? Meh. The cutesy factor overwhelms the content, which is rushed through. Not attacky enough for an attack ad (needs moar “Stop Carol Shea-Porter from raping our children!”) yet still doesn’t give enough reason to vote for oppo (which it can’t b/c it’s an “independent” ad). Also, it’s using the wrong metaphor: OOB message is a personal-liberty one, not related to the issues they’re discussing — which would be fine if it worked, but I don’t think it does. To wit: the Unka Gubmint guy in the kid’s wagon — why is he smoking? Unka Gubmint On Our Backs would be snatching a cigarette out of the kid’s mouth and using a firehose for crowd control against a group of John Deere-hat-wearing smokers on their afternoon smoke break.
As for content: FRC agitating on an OOB message? Yet another datum proving that the Tea Party (OOB) is the same old same old GOP base.
Although … maybe the guy in the wagon is an anti-ADA/anti-VA message? Does he have no legs?
WANT
Yes indeed.
Salbuchet: thanks very much for bringing the grilled heat so prolifically these past few weeks.
Those of us indoctrinated into proper leftist thought in the 1980s remember “Off Our Backs” as the magazine of feminist orthodoxy, the perfect exemplar of what would become the easy stereotype of joyless feminism incapable of laughing at itself, or allowing anyone else to.
(joke from those days: “How many feminists does it take to change a lightbulb?” “That’s not funny.”)
As feminist and lesbian thought evolved in later years to recognize that one could be sex-positive and have a sense of humor and still not be a tool of the patriarchy, a new publication called “On Our Backs” was born. NSFW.
Love this, and as someone barely indoctrinated into proper breathing techniques in the 1980s had no idea.

Great individual player seasons for sucky teams
Yes, #1 is who you think it is. The addition of WAR makes it even more amazing.
I’m looking at a list that puts Lonnie Smith at #4, and I’m getting a BS Detector activation. That might need a closer look.
Headline win
Spirited challenge.
So far my “maid scandal will be irrelevant” prediction looks pretty wrong.
Lets test my “calling voters hicks will be irrelevant” prediction.
Cheapskate millionaires are cheapskates
Ugh.
Tangent:
One year food supply, $800. But if you’re planning for the end of the world, do you really need organic apple slices?
Conversely if you’re providing organic apples, do you have to ship white sugar?
And bacon, beef and chicken I understand, but WTF is taco TVP?
Glad they spelled this out:
And to answer your question, it’s taco-flavored vegetarian coarse powder. See this link.
So my question still remains wtf does “taco-flavored” mean?
“baking essentials”? Won’t the smoke from your wood fire give your location away to the zombies?
sssh… It’s all just selling a promise of a better life when ObaMAO tries to take away your guns.
If I get laid off just after the baseball season has ended I’m gonna be pissed.
Maybe all that watching-playoffs-at-your-desk is not so good for your employment prospects.
Thanks for the helpful advice.
You’re one to talk, you BASTARD!
I like how water cooler girl shows up solely and exclusively to taunt salb. It’s like having your own personal cyberstalker!
In all seriousness, I hope you’re not in any danger of losing your job.
It’s a bit … unsettled around here. Things fall apart; the center cannot hold.
Ugh. I am sorry to hear that.
Well that’s not funny at all.
Good luck!
With any luck, being smart, talented and credentialed will keep you employed. I have similar concerns for my job come the end of the fiscal year, and I’m only two of those thrww things (at most).
you been reading my posts?
Whoa: no Zito, no Guillen.
It was almost as if they were … organized!
It’s like they’re the anti-2003 A’s.
Aaron Rowand made it, presumably because Sabean feared leaving the Giants two most highly paid players off the NLDS roster would damage his chances to win GM of the Year.
On this day four years ago…
Wow, that was a long time ago.
The whole 7th inning sequence, ending with Scutaro on 2nd with the crowd chanting, still sends shivers down my spine.
Perhaps you mean this?
ArakSOT and (I think) walkoffbunt and I watched that together at a bar on Mass Ave. What a great, great day.
I was in the law school basement cutting class.
good times
Yup – but watching the whole inning play out is the way to go.
MLB gave away the deciding games that season so I have the whole thing on my laptop, and it’s a regular towards the end of loooong transatlantic flights.
I was at that game with monkeyball!
I was at that game, and got home to find a message from my sister about our dad being diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. :(
Is it wrong of me to be rooting against Crawford so that he gets labeled a playoff choker and teams lose (some) interest?
Not wrong, just pointless.
Looks like I’ll be buying three tickets (+ lap infant) from BOS to SFO for the week before Thanksgiving.
One way.
You got a job here, or [redacted]? Either way, congrats. Ed note: While funny, I don’t want that showing up in any archive
I retract my parenthetic.
They’ve hired you to replace andeux at a lower wage?
(Too soon/presumptive?)
Wow! Big news. What’s the deal?
Research job in the Bay Area. mrs trebuchet is nearing ABD status. Can’t stand the thought of another winter here.
Whereabouts – not the lab I presume :-(
My application at the lab is still open, but they are moving very slowly. When/if my next position ends, the lab might have gotten around to reviewing proposals. I’m honestly surprised that the requisition opened up almost a year ago and they’ve made little movement toward filling it; I would have figured they would need to commit funds at some point. I’ve been in consistent touch with my contacts there and it’s always “we haven’t done anything, check back next month.” Too bad; it’s a great facility and the people there seemed nice – and it was the perfect fit for my research area.
I have no problem waiting, but in the meantime I got an offer with a deadline at the *other* bay area lab to do some very interesting work on optical materials. Given geography, economy, and research field, I’d be nuts to turn it down. So I didn’t.
So you’ll now be lobbying for the A’s to move to San Jose?
Feh. Once I perfect my teleporter, it’s not going to matter where they are. Science!
If you invent a working teleporter I’ll give you $10
If you invent a working time machine, I will have already given you $10.
I’ll be in the East Bay. *That* lab.
Oh my!
Nothing top secret or anything.
But from what I understand, a very different culture from here.
Wait — he’s switching to organic chem?
from what i can tell, yes, a different culture. ::shrug:: i liked everyone i met at both labs: different, yes; worries me, no.
in any case, it was either that or take on a massive amount of risk and work >80 hours/wk for a startup company. not really in a position to do that.
Fair enough.
My experience has mostly been with their security guards …
yeah, my lab can beat up your lab…
You’ll have to pardon our confusion.
Warning: link includes the word “megajoules,” which sounds kinda dirty.
NEEDS MOAR FOTOSHOPPE
So have you given any thought as to which side of the hills you will live?
Which hills?
We’ll probably just look to minimize the commute in the near-term.
The East Bay hills.
Probably east of the EB Hills, but west of the Altamont Pass. If we can get within biking distance it would be a major plus, but that’s geographically pretty limiting.
So Dublin/Pleasanton and you’ve got BART too.
Something like that. My sister lives in the area, so it will be nice to live close to her.
And there’s a cheese-steak shop there.
Where?
mrs trebuchet and I used to go to IB Hoagies on Durant every other week when we were in college. my memory tells me it was insanely delicious.
This one
I have a sentimental attachment so it might not be as good as I think, but I’m pretty sure it is.
And I go to the Pleasanton one every time I have a jail tour.
Bengie Molina, HR manager
Hey, I understand that sometimes things move really slowly. Like I said, no hard feelings.
You expect an organization that is still working on walking to fly in a new employee?
Hey, no hard feelings. Still love that facility.
Congrats.
Perhaps a FKing welcome party is in order
agrd. I could open up the garage door…
Excellent!
Hey, that’s awesome!
Awesome–congrats Sal!!
No more NRAFy whining every time there’s a tailgate organized here! Woohoo! ;)
fucking nrafs.
Not looking good for the Rays (although as we know too well, winning the first 2 on the road does not guarantee a series victory).
They seem to me to have a particular knack of going cold as a team … is that borne out by any facts?
That and Shields was an odd choice
Shields was only chosen because he couldn’t pitch on the Sabbath.
Oh.
(that was a joke)
I’m wondering if looking at a histogram of team hits per game would be a way to test my hypothesis, but I can’t seem to find an easy-to-extract compilation of those data. Any suggestions?
I don’t think there’s an easy b-ref or fg way to do it.
b-r game logs.
You should be able to cut/paste from their table into a spreadsheet. Or click on “CSV”, cut/paste into a text file, and then read into a spreadsheet, or matlab, or whatever.
Whoa, cool.
Perfect – thanks
Doesn’t look like there was any substance to my suspicion after all.
I find their trouble getting 7 hits disturbing.
And 16.
It’s Obama’s fault the stimulus money isn’t being spent on this project!
Right wing talk radio has no real world implications. This woman was a liberal plant.
Think President Palin’s DOJ would do this?
I don’t know, but I would assume that Bush’s DOJ would.
the 2012 GOP will consider Bush a pseudo-commie RINO
Red Rhinoceros?
Heh.
/shameless traffic grab.
Or not.
Christ. The comments.
Exactly. Although comparing pitchers using their WPA is a bit like using Wins insofar as it depends on what the offense does (or doesn’t, in the case of the Giants).
It’s also (and this is related to your point, but slightly different) verging on “quantifying clutch.”
Gah. Well, I guess ** can console itself with “no dumber than the readership of the NYT.”
Or, at least, the trolletariat.
Wait a second, we have a PLAYOFF team with Zobrist starting at 1B, and as shitty an offensive 5-9 as the A’s?
What is this, rest the starters day?
I really hope this gets wittily augmented rather than just defaced – in fact the layout is almost perfect.
Caption competition: what should the bottom-right white text area be changed to? Even just changing the c in Oct to a u would be a start.
The Big Reveal: [Dates]
Then she can either come out of the closet or reveal that it’s all a big joke.
Dan. Johnson.
Is anyone else watching Top Chef: Just Desserts? Because it is leading me to the conclusion that every dessert chef on earth is emotionally unstable.
No kidding, they’re worse than the contestants in the fashion design or hairdressing equivalents. Which is kind of remarkable. And even the one who seemed to have her shit together melted down after not being given the (meaningless) win.
2-hit by Wilson, O’Day & Oliver … yikes.
Like I said, their 5-9 look at least as bad as ours.
Well, this is mildly interesting.
My Savior Is Tougher Than Lenny Dykstra
Booo!
NEEDS MOAR BRITISH DOUBLE-ENTENDRE HEADLINE
I prefer Colbert homages these days.
As the FK representative in Nevada, I’ll be keeping you all updated, but it looks like the rats are fleeing the sinking ship.
Sounds personal as much as anything, but that’s a powerful enemy to have.
I think on any kind of non-partisan method, let alone a partisan Democratic one, Reid is the better person to have in the senate (but then I’m certainly biased).
The woman is for less government intrusion in your life, fine. Unless your daughter is raped and gets pregnant as a result. Then, government should step in and force her to carry the baby to term. I’m an atheist, but My God.
Pavano’s making his point.
that he looks like mario?
That he can keep the Yankees from scoring a ton of runs
(and yes, the reverse jinx appears to be working)
What’s with the getting ejected during mound visits thing that everyone seems to do now? Or is gameday just lying to me?
{snerk}
Hah!
get off my mound!
TWWCGS
Oh, Gardenhire and Hunter Wendelstedt. There’s some history there.
That’s not batgirl!
In 10 pitches, Rauch is now leading the Twins pitchers in WPA.
KOTD: kimchi panic!!!
Didn’t you play gayageum for Kimchi Panic?
I thought the gayageum was the interactive children’s learning center located on the site where Jobs and Woz invented the first queer robot.
Oh, and by the way, Monkey, homosexual-American is the acceptable nomenclature…
It amazes me that anyone would decree game over, on any issue, based on what a politician says four weeks before election day. People are awfully stupid sometimes.
Is this in regard to Meg’s housekeeper?
Lew’s next landlord.
Ah.
Tiresome partisan sniping is tiresome. I’m at the point where I can’t take anything at that site seriously either way.
Tangentially, have you ever accidentally visited newballpark.com?
Aieee! I have now.
I agree. but certian people have been trying to say “Game over” for quite some time now.
Managers seem to be universal in their love for run minimizing tactics like the contact play.
All managers are

Rubio throws harder and straighter from the right side.
Timeh!
He’s pretty good.
