Tolleson to be Called Up 92

UPDATE: Barton starting, batting 2

Link.
It appears that there is no decision on Barton yet; Tolleson would not be a starter, so it looks to me like they are planning for Barton missing a few games. So either Barton will go on the DL or a pitcher will be sent down.

Tolleson is an IF who was raking in AAA to start the year. He has never raked before and it does not appear that he is any good at defense.

    Stupid question, because I didn’t really track Tolleson.

    Wasn’t he a waiver claim? I assumed, apparently wrongly, that he was waived because he was out of options, but we sent him down during ST.

    And I have to say: mikev is one of my favorite people on here -slusser.

      He was drafted in 2005 and has never been in the majors, so there’s no way he’s out of options. Presumably, he was dfa’d because the Twins needed to kick someone off their roster, and Tolleson-especially before getting hot this month-does/did not appear to be particularly good at baseball.

      • TJ Apr 27,2010 1:40 pm || Up

        Yeah, Twins were out of 40-man space when they signed Thome so he was put on waivers then.

    Looking over the rosters, it seems like Oakland has a small surplus of pitchers and catchers, and a shortage of other (healthy) position players (especially OFers) at the upper levels right now.

    (Before this move) Oakland has 13 pitchers and 12 position players.
    Sacramento 13 pitchers and 11 position players (inc. 3 catchers).
    Midland 14 pitchers and 11 position players.
    Stockton 12 pitchers (+ Wuertz rehabbing) and 11 position players (inc. 3 catchers).

        Both of them would have had to make the flight prior when they said they were making a decision on Barton (today), so it doesn’t necessarily mean that. Also, they won’t need a starter until Sunday (if they want) due to the off day yesterday.

        • MikeV Apr 27,2010 1:26 pm || Up

          That’s never been the issue, to me.

          If he can’t go, DL him and give him 2 weeks to heal up. Don’t make him sit for 3 or 4 days, then take 2 at bats on the 5th day and realize he’s still hurt, then DL him for 2 weeks. Then he’s missing 3 weeks for no reason.

        • andeux Apr 27,2010 1:34 pm || Up

          It also depends on the player. Barton’s our best hitter by quite a bit this year, so the risk of having a short bench for a few days is worth the reward of even the chance of having him back in sooner than two weeks. Same with Suzuki, and (arguably) Ellis when he first got hurt.

          But when they used to do that with players who weren’t that good anyway (like Kotsay) it got pretty annoying.

    Anyone listen to Townsend on the postgames this weekend? I find him kind of annoying, but the rants re injuries became pretty comical. His grandfather was Bob Elliott, ’47 NL MVP, and he said that he ate nothing but steak, never worked out, did nothing but hunt and play golf in the off season. That, naturally, was extrapolated to the position that the A’s should stop all workouts, eat beef, drink whiskey, and chase women until all hours in order to avoid the injury plague. All pretty tongue in cheek, I should add, though some callers sounded pretty serious. Of course it seems ridiculous, but jeesh, the way things are going I’m about ready to endorse this plan too.

            For what it’s worth, Sheets’s velocity was pretty good his last start. Also, I think he’s working in his changeup a lot more now.

              My point wasn’t anything about Sheets, just that 4 starts in, lots of guys have good ERAs despite mediocre pitching. Both of them will presumably be better going forward.
