UPDATE: Barton starting, batting 2
Link.
It appears that there is no decision on Barton yet; Tolleson would not be a starter, so it looks to me like they are planning for Barton missing a few games. So either Barton will go on the DL or a pitcher will be sent down.
Tolleson is an IF who was raking in AAA to start the year. He has never raked before and it does not appear that he is any good at defense.
Stupid question, because I didn’t really track Tolleson.
Wasn’t he a waiver claim? I assumed, apparently wrongly, that he was waived because he was out of options, but we sent him down during ST.
Thanks, and go As.
He was drafted in 2005 and has never been in the majors, so there’s no way he’s out of options. Presumably, he was dfa’d because the Twins needed to kick someone off their roster, and Tolleson-especially before getting hot this month-does/did not appear to be particularly good at baseball.
Yeah, Twins were out of 40-man space when they signed Thome so he was put on waivers then.
same for Edwar apparently.
MikeV at ** reminds us (me) that he was acquired in a trade for Petit.
yes, but the Yankees DFA’d him before the Rangers picked him up.
And I believe he was reminding me in that comment.
Now now, you can BOTH be reminded by me.
Sheesh.
Thanks, and go As.
Let me remind you that
Huh. Didn’t see that one coming. If they do end up putting Barton on the DL I’d still expect to see Powell recalled.
Someone at ** the other day suggested that Rosales would fill in at 1B. This move would also be consistent with that (appalling) plan.
Fox at 1B according to Slusser.Nevermind, I see you got that already. This game is in the bag.
Thanks, and go As.
Looking over the rosters, it seems like Oakland has a small surplus of pitchers and catchers, and a shortage of other (healthy) position players (especially OFers) at the upper levels right now.
(Before this move) Oakland has 13 pitchers and 12 position players.
Sacramento 13 pitchers and 11 position players (inc. 3 catchers).
Midland 14 pitchers and 11 position players.
Stockton 12 pitchers (+ Wuertz rehabbing) and 11 position players (inc. 3 catchers).
Kouzmanoff, Pennington, Tolleson, Rosales…is there a worse hitting infield in the majors?
worse than Rodriguez, Jeter, Cano, Teixiera?
Anderson being put on the DL, according to Slusser.
Thanks, and go As.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Where do we start the bidding for Sheets?
Oh for fuck’s sake. What a perfectly horrible week.
On top of that, it’s fucking pouring ass rain here, too.
I hate everything.
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah, and my afternoon snack tasted like a pool cover. Blarg.
Forearm strain is way better than elbow problem.
and elbow irritation
well that is less good.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
Who starts on Friday? Mazzaro or Cahill?
Looks like Mazzaro probably deserves the first shot.
We’re just one more rung down the ladder to a DiNardo start.
[shudder]…
Di Nardo v. Eveland this weekend? That’d be a pip.
We need a QotM here. Come up with a name and I’ll compile.

don’t make me work….I’m sick…
Heartbreaking Quote of Staggering Genius
Lineup is in with Powell at C, Fox 1B, Chavez DH. No word on what the other move is. Suzuki isn’t feeling 50 times better anymore I guess.

50 times better than what? Eric Chavez?
He said he was feeling 50 times better on Sunday than on Saturday.
So they brought Powell on the trip when they left yesterday, I’m assuming?
oh, and Barton DL. It’s gotta be. FUCK.
Thanks, and go As.
Both of them would have had to make the flight prior when they said they were making a decision on Barton (today), so it doesn’t necessarily mean that. Also, they won’t need a starter until Sunday (if they want) due to the off day yesterday.
Saturday
Ah yes, I was counting Anderson as one of the guys with enough rest……
Also, Patterson for Rajai again.
Fuck this team.
Barton out. Suzuki out. Ellis out. Anderson fucking out. Watch out Sweeney, you’re next.
But at least Chavez is still feeling great!
ZombieChavy.
Barton not to DL, a reliever is getting sent down.
From slusser.
Thanks, and go As.
via LB?
Edwar DFA?
Oh, fuck me. That means barton’s going to be day-to-day for a fucking week before he gets DL’d. Then the A’s sign Nomar to play first.
This complaint has always seemed overblown to me, and I used to argue with people at ** about it all the time. Being one short on the bench is a really really really not-big deal.
That’s never been the issue, to me.
If he can’t go, DL him and give him 2 weeks to heal up. Don’t make him sit for 3 or 4 days, then take 2 at bats on the 5th day and realize he’s still hurt, then DL him for 2 weeks. Then he’s missing 3 weeks for no reason.
Thanks, and go As.
Yeah, it’s the test game -> no backdating DL that really hurts
bingo
Speaking of, Slusser says Barton is starting today after all.
It also depends on the player. Barton’s our best hitter by quite a bit this year, so the risk of having a short bench for a few days is worth the reward of even the chance of having him back in sooner than two weeks. Same with Suzuki, and (arguably) Ellis when he first got hurt.
But when they used to do that with players who weren’t that good anyway (like Kotsay) it got pretty annoying.
Gaudin?
Does that mean Blevins is feeling fine and is available?
yeah, Slusser just said that a few minutes ago.

1. Edwar Ramirez optioned to Sacramento. #Athletics
Thanks, and go As.
I’m surprised he had an option. Good.
What a bunch of fragile FKers.
I’ll break you!!!
Anyone listen to Townsend on the postgames this weekend? I find him kind of annoying, but the rants re injuries became pretty comical. His grandfather was Bob Elliott, ’47 NL MVP, and he said that he ate nothing but steak, never worked out, did nothing but hunt and play golf in the off season. That, naturally, was extrapolated to the position that the A’s should stop all workouts, eat beef, drink whiskey, and chase women until all hours in order to avoid the injury plague. All pretty tongue in cheek, I should add, though some callers sounded pretty serious. Of course it seems ridiculous, but jeesh, the way things are going I’m about ready to endorse this plan too.
I am not a fan of sports shout, which he seems to be.
He’s better than Buan.
Thanks, and go As.
Agreed. His national talk show is actually worth listening to, from time to time.
I like him.
And apparently I run **.
Since when?
Townsend got a email from me the other day and I mentioned ** and he said he got an email from the guy who runs **.
Those are … nacho runs.
I would laugh if we went on to sweep the series.
Davis and Shields have been both been pretty mediocre thus far. Stranger things have happened.
Yeah, Davis’ sub-3 ERA is pretty mediocre (Note: He hasn’t pitched against us yet)
13/11 K/BB. Sheets also has a sub-3 ERA and he definitely has not been better than mediocre.
Correction: He is not likely to continue to be medicore. So far he’s given up remarkably few earned runs.
For what it’s worth, Sheets’s velocity was pretty good his last start. Also, I think he’s working in his changeup a lot more now.
My point wasn’t anything about Sheets, just that 4 starts in, lots of guys have good ERAs despite mediocre pitching. Both of them will presumably be better going forward.
FIP is pretty down on him, as mike semi-alluded to. It’s still early, but he’s having a hard time making bats miss. One of those starts was against the Yankees though.
They should have made Anderson sign the extension with his right hand.
Suslu says Barton might be in the lineup if bp goes well. Devine has “severe tendonitis.”
updates coming fast: that is “good news” for Devine!
If he can play through it, does it risk becoming more severe?
I’m imagining it’s like he jammed his finger playing basketball. Goes away after awhile. I have no idea.
Sergio Mitre; Mike Aviles; Josh Johnson; Jesse Litsch; Tim Hudson.

Also, this
Who are five people who have never been in my kitchen?
If I recall, didn’t Mulder experience something similar in early 2002, and was able to
return in about a monthhelplessly witness his career slide into oblivion shortly thereafter?Barton starting, batting 2
Speaking of,
He hasn’t missed any games yet, so that’s not really a factor here. (OK, potentially 1 day.)
I predict that he will
hit his first HRbe molested by a clown in the player parking lot.Nope, LB is sick today.
Yes, but the A’s medical staff is still available.
awww, gee whiz guys…
Alex Valdez (25 years old) of Midland is currently putting up a .283/.333/.433 MLE. Supposedly his defense is adequate at second and third. Personally, I think he has more potential than Tolleson.
But was his dad a teammate of Geren?
