No Marte: One of his amazing lats is sore. No Harrison: His everything is sore. No Jed or Elvis, got out while the getting was good.
Ted Barrett, Adam Hamari, CB Bucknor, and Chad Fairchild have the wrong calls. M’s AA phenom Matt Brash could make his MLB debut tomorrow.
We could plant a house. We could build a tree.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Yesterday Tony Kemp lost a streak of 88 appearances without striking out. Today of course he strikes out to start the game.
BAT OF RENOWN!
Doubt Seth Brown and despair!
Great lineup, just like we all said.
that’s my centerfielder
A note on the joe west nonsense yesterday, when I tuned in the NY/Bos game on friday, they announced the umpires and they said joe west had the plate.
Then as the game started and I think it was david cone who said, joe west was at second.
I think what happened is joe west insisted on taking the okate for the sunday night game
He’s apparently retiring after this year, thank the gods.
Irvin has been walking guys. I dont like that development
Someone needs to tell the Machin he isn’t allowed to swing until he has 2 strikes.
Almost like having a backup corner OF and a AAA utility Infielder isn’t the best option to make a gold glove play on a looper.
A 3-1 lead has never felt like such a lost cause.
I need more info about the fan sign they showed then quickly cut away from which said Seager Fever, with two hypodermic syringes.
Territorrensial Pissings
For 1 week let the old Krush come back.
I just want him to hit one more HR in an A’s uniform. That opposite field shot the other day was so close.
Good Machin AB.
Not sure Nick Allen would do any better at the plate, but I say he at least gets a glove on the Torrens hit.
Mark Ellis! His bobblehead still gets a front row seat in my collection.
Me too! The only ones I have that aren’t packed away are Roy Steele, Bill King, and Mark Ellis.
I wish he was around more.
I like Guerra more than most, but am not sold on using him again the day after he gave up a couple of runs.
I also like Guerra, and I also find this suboptimal, but who else with runners on in the 4th? Petit even though it’s early? Sam Moll?
Yeah, the real problem of course is Irvin can’t go 4 innings unless he pitches once a week, the entire pen took 3 weeks off, and we couldn’t beat TX to save our life.
yup
He has grown on me last month or 2. I can see him as a useful arm next year.
But yeah not loving having the season on him.
I think we are all thinking he is petit 2.0
Well that was all very predictable.
Gotta hand it to bob, this last weekend was the best baseball the A’s played all year
On the bright side, we’re still doing all we can to prevent the *s from clinching.
I just want bassitt to qualify
So ends the perfect 2021 of Sam Moll.
I just can’t decide between Walker (my pick from last year), Grazer, and 812.
Those are sure some fat bears! I like Grazer, I’m a sucker for fiesty blondes.
Grazer and Walker roll to easy first round wins!
Walker into the final four, where he will face the underdog who knocked off Grazer. Unnamed Cub 132 looks like he/she benefitted from a spin in the dryer:
I love the people in the comments going after this Floofy Freeloader. And the campaign posters!
Walker takes down the Floof! I’m flipping my vote in the other bracket. I started with 812, but I gotta switch to Otis, the sentimental favorite. The commenters have won my vote.
Ben Linbergh on deception using petit as a jumping off point
Wow, lots of really good stuff in there.
Per your comment last night:
Also, ouch:
Watching Messi with PSG makes me sad. It’s just all wrong.
Silva’s miss is one for the ages.
OMG, well then.
Don’t know what the story is behind this team from Moldova called F.C. Sheriff that is sticking it to Real Madrid, but I’m guessing it is problematic.
from moldova not in moldova (de jure). and more than problematic, KGB-corporate. i think?
quick geopolitical explainer.
Unclear what is happening here but it seems like a suboptimal backdrop for calling a game.
Looks like there is a concert there on Friday. So that would be some kind of tower for speakers or lights or the stage itself, near the RF bleachers.
At first read I thought that was the A’s October schedule: Los Bupkis.
Vince and Ken said they will be broadcasting from NBC Sports’ studios in SF on Friday because of it. They were in countdown to season’s end mode today, talking about the extraordinary work of the engineers in pulling all of this together…..(and it is notable, even to me who’s been producing newscasts on my kitchen table for 18 months). Ken also mentioned on the postgame show that although he hopes the broadcasters will be traveling next year and he wants to go on some road trips, he will not be returning to an 81-game road schedule.
they better be going
Many of the older announcers cut back on the travel. That’s how Ken got his current job; Lon Simmons wanted to cut back, the then-new Schott-Hofmann ownership said no, we want our announcers doing 162 minus a little vacation time, so the first act of the new A’s ownership was to fire Lon. It wasn’t well-received at the time, especially with baseball still recovering from the 94-95 work stoppage plus the A’s being pretty bad on the field. I would hope the current ownership would allow Ken to cut back some, even though that means Vince/Roxy or Vince/Townsend for more games…but it’s Fisher’s organization so who knows.
townsend would make me turn off the radio
He already makes me turn off the radio.
The Rays and Orioles are currently helping the Mariners.
Blue jays don’t seem to want to win either
The four way tie is going to be epic.
These scenarios never actually come to pass but I enjoyed reading the other day that MLB has no plan for the five-way tie the NL could produce.
No four or five-way ties, no Game 163s, no, we get Yanks-BoSox and Dodgers-Cards. The so-called baseball gods are just boring old guys.
and eventually astros rays and dodgers braves
Yankees Dodgers WS?
that at least is a little interesting.
HOU-SF might make me puke for a week straight.
Oh. … God.
I’m pulling for the Screw Fox Series of Tampa vs Milwaukee.
Humiliation is in the, um, eye of the beholder:
anyone hear about a pitch limit?
Man Crawford wasn’t even close. Rash decision. Yay.
The throw was about 10 feet up the line, and still beat him to that spot.
Canha returned the favor.
Of course it doesn’t matter, because we can’t do anything against this pitcher who just allowed 9 runs in two innings against the Angels.
Seth was 1 for 2 in that inning and Bassitt wasn’t too happy about the first one. Why isn’t Canha playing CF?

Ed: last time I remember Melvin saying something about probably more than 3 next time since he went 3 the 1st game. Sort of a spring trainingish ramp up.
thing i don’t like abou the sandwich commercial is remembering that Steven Pistcotty is giong to be an “Oakland A’s outfielder” next year too
I tried the Cheese Steak Shop once and it was dry and horrible.
I wonder if anderson yelled at his murphy after that foul out to out murphy
It seems I was a little quick to dismiss the Mariners’ postseason chances. The thought of them going 5-0 so far vs. the A’s in this stretch didn’t really cross my mind.
strike outs were cool
I guess the Astros will be staying up to watch this game.
fastball 88. Yeah, as much as I want him to get innings, this is it
Bassitt sure doesn’t look happy about it.
Petit does not seem to be deceiving anyone.
Yes the Mariners advance team appears to read the Ringer too.
I can hardly wait to see what the A’s bullpen looks like next spring. Maybe I’ll re-read Ball Four this winter because the ’69 Pilots sounds about right.
But Marshall and Bouton ar…
Oh, I get it now.
Vince says the confidence levels are at an all time high for seattle
We have no chance
That’s the next great undervalued commodity for sabrmetricians to figure out.
Emo: I think they can hit petit’s slow stuff, bob
Bob: let’s go slower
Emo: So crazy it might just work!
Hey I have an eephus and could get to Seattle before first pitch tomorrow.
Every time I hear Glen give HR and RBI numbers for Seattle I expect it to be “and all against the A’s”.
Clown show.
I’m being reminded every inning via on-screen graphic that I will lose NBC Sports California on Thursday night unless Youtube TV and Comcast/NBC settle their latest dispute, and I’m thinking “that actually couldn’t be better-timed”.
Tonight’s Giants game would have gone dark at midnight Eastern/9 p.m. Pacific, but apparently a short-term extension has kept the Comcast/NBC channels on Youtube TV, for how long is unclear.
I don’t watch the NBA or NHL. The only thing I would watch on any Comcast/NBC channel before the end of the year would be Sunday Night Football, and there’s enough other NFL on television to do without that. After the first of the year I like Golf Channel from January-March, plus some NFL playoff games. But it would not be that much of an issue until the 2022 A’s season starts, and at this time Fubo does have all the channels I would need.
was in the younger kid’s room helping with homework as harrison dived and threw poorly. I said “dammit”
he said accusingly, “you aren’t even playing why are you mad?”
The sato pharmaceutical logo they have behind home plate now always reminds me of
Glen erring in the direction of getting excited about every fly ball.
Go to bed, Houston. It’s not happening tonight.
That’s Mitch Haniger’s 100th career homer (all against Oakland).
gonna steal
The stanford football ad has appropriately fascistic overtones.
Add another one to the list. I’m just wondering what he was “frustrated, upset” about at that particular moment.
It has to do with a lady friend, yeah?
Texas election and abortion laws, without doubt.
He punched a wall on his way home? So, the outside of a building? Those are usually pretty hard.
The Congressional baseball game is on FS1, tied 11-11 in the 5th, Jon Ossoff on the mound in relief for team blue. His stuff is, um, not overpowering.
Dem slugger Jimmy Panetta (Carmel), with a (defense aided) homer and two triples so far, gets rung up on a highly dubious called strike three with the bases loaded.
Notwithstanding his age and insanity, Mo Brooks can play a little bit.
GOP wins 13-12 behind 120 pitches in five innings from Steube of FL, and a two inning save from Pfluger of TX. First red win in five years. Fill in your Stop The Steal joke here.
Did Sen. Brown play this year?
No lie, that is very similar to how an inmate broke my arm in San Quentin 4 years ago
So the Tragic Number is about to be 1 (vs. Boston).
With apologies to those who think a Red Sox-Yankees wild card game would be the depth of vileness, I’d like to see the A’s avail themselves of this one final opportunity to kick the Mariners in the teeth.
Although if the A’s lose tonight they would at least be put out of this godawful misery.
This is the most important game the Mariners have played in years. Quick glance suggests the attendance will be ~15K. I thought they would do well on that tonight, and it can’t be blamed on a dump of a ballpark.
Around 5-6K jumped on the Teal and Navy bandwagon compared to the crowds of 11K and 12K the previous two nights.
Inability to play .500 ball against this mediocre Mariners team is right up there with not signing Semien on the reasons for missing the playoffs.
Is it possible that instead of just mediocre overall, the Mariners were kind of bad in the first half when we mostly weren’t playing them and were kind of good by the time we were playing them a lot? That sometimes happens with young, talented teams.
I would add barely playing .500 against a much worse Rangers team.
Glen and Dallas mentioned this from yesterday’s game
Umps are finally getting in form. I saw another recent one with only one “missed” call, and it was about the same as #1 here, though a different corner.
he needs the lastella machine
108 for Olson. Chapman needs a Matt to Matt talk this off-season.
Top 5 in Oakland history:
1. Chapman 2021 – 200 K – .212/.313/.407
2. Cust 2008 – 197 K – .231/.375/.476
3. Khris 2017 – 195 K – .247/.336/.528
4. Cust 2009 – 185 K – .240/.356/.417
T5. Khris 2018 – 175 K – .247/.326/.549
T5. Canseco 1986 – 175 K – .240/.318/.457
Matt Chapman reads FK!!!!
Montas looks sharp and will be on regular rest for the play-in game at Fenway on Monday.
We’ve figured out the secret. They don’t start scoring until we do.
stolen
Hmmm….
Now we’re screwed.
correct
Oh great, now C.B. Bucknor is umpiring with little tweety birds circling his head.
So, that’s what it feels like when Erick Aybar homers for your team
Nick Allen please
Pathetic
(not meant as response, but still works, I guess)
I didn’t see last inning’s challenge, but Ken and vince were surprised at the speed of the overturning. Made me think it could have been inconclusive.
If that call stands, they don’t have a challenge.
Sure sure, it wouldn’t have gone down the same way, but still
The one the previous inning, it was clear from the third angle they showed that Kemp had come off the bag by a couple inches in order to reach the kicked ball.
sigh
Joke’s on Seattle. They won’t get to play the A’s in the playoffs.
There’s plenty of blame to go around for this dismal finish, but the biggest disappointment for me – even more than the awfulness of Kaval, who I had quite liked – is Ramon. He wasn’t having a particularly good year – I hope he got his money back from whoever sold him the PEDs – but still, he would have been a nice piece to have off the bench and to give Marte a few more rest days in these last two months. And it was a little bit harder to boo Altuve and Bregman last weekend when we had our own cheater in the clubhouse.
Yeah, I would have loved to see him and Marte in the outfield together for a few months. It really was a stupid move. I’ll be curious to see if he comes back better after getting off the substances and wanting to prove he didn’t need them, but he won’t be out there with Marte.
The irony of Marte himself being the perfect example of someone who has thrived after serving a suspension for the very same substance.
I would bet on Ramon coming back better. He always feels like the guy who plays better when he has a chip on his shoulder. Related-I feel like at some point he would have put the team on his back for 1 game against the Mariners. Wouldnt change the overall ending, but maybe we lose 7 in a row instead of all of them..
Everyone weighs their morality in sports differently of course, but for me one individual breaking rules to improve his own performance is not comparable to a years-long organizational conspiracy to cheat every other team and their fans. I will enthusiastically boo the Astros forever without the slightest qualm.
I’m not even that bothered by the Astros’ cheating, if I’m being honest. I hate their front office and their fans for reasons beyond that, and I can’t stand the sight of Correa’s or Bregman’s face, but the trash cans are more funny to me than anything else.
Interesting that A’s fans aren’t treated to the same excuses for not showing up.
I guess it’s all about the parking lots.
Like John Shea saying Fisher must obviously do dark donations to Trump groups, the Chronicle guys will always take shots against the A’s and excuse the Giants. Even SuSlu now takes shots.
The dark money comment was not mere speculation. (Also it was Ostler.)
Interesting. But it gets in the way of my worldview, so FAKE NEWS.
Looks like she thought better of that second one.
This looks like a pretty cool bar to not notice Mick Jagger in.
one look and i’m all, holdout!
Turns out the Red Sox were right there for the taking. Congrats, Seattle.
The Aviators are still playing. Or maybe not.
And it’s over.
Can we do that too?
I think the money line on the A’s was 86.5, so no
Sell the team to the crypto guys, Fisher. Let’s run this thing on the blockchain and see what happens.
I wonder how closely his idea of community ownership aligns with that of most people in the community.
And everyone has a share!
Seriously?
I sometimes get non-COVID related stomach illness while watching Machín attempt to hit pitched baseballs.
Did Austin Allen run over Forst’s dog or something?
Away from the ball club for two months, but still a True Athletic through and through.
Needle nicked something.
I’m not going to quibble with Bassitt about this, he’s certainly borne his fair share of the load. I expected he would want to get on the mound one more time, especially with the last one not going all that great, plus the qualification for the ERA leadership. And the Astros will play Sunday like it’s a Grapefruit League game.
I too thought for sure he would want to pitch the 4 2/3 innings to qualify for the ERA leaderboard (and then another 1/3 for a chance at one more win).
Perhaps he can pitch five innings after Manaea gets pulled in the second.
Super glad we get 1 more Irvin start. Maybe he can piss off the whole division before 22.
