A's equipment manager Steve Vucinich dropping some honesty on NBCSCA about his retirement after 54 years: "I was actually going to do it two years ago, but because of economics and the way they restructured our pension plan, it made sense for me to stay a couple more years."
I couldn’t take the A’s after the last couple days. 5Aces, you need to light a fire under your guys because they’re having a major letdown issue against a crappy UNLV team after the win in Pasadena.
I just got back from driving Lil Miss Aces back to Fullerton after a couple of days at home. Classic FSU (no not that one, and not that one either) letdown game. Huge win, Friday night home game against an awful team. I almost put a dollar or 2 on UNLV because I know history. Even if they win it will be goodbye 25.
Nice escape act by Frankie. Can’t help thinking though it’s like a MASH episode where the surgeon saves a kid only to have him go out into the bullpen’s machine gun fire.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
On the one hand, the little Ns got to see a grand slam in person, which was cool.
On the other hand, it was 12:15 when we got home post-fireworks (with a special FU to the assholes that did construction on the 580/80 stretch past Berkeley). So those last 6 outs HURT.
"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
Impressive (pre-integration) collection of all-time great players in one place. Equivalent today I suppose would be an old-timers game with Rickey, Eck, Clemens, Schmidt, Reggie, Strawberry, Bonds, Morgan, Bench, and 10 or so other HoF’ers from 1970s-80s.
Not quite the same thing, but I went to 1 or 2 old-timers games when they had them annually before minor-league Buffalo Bisons games.
I don’t remember much, probably mostly lesser lights, for whom the money they could make doing those meant something. I think I got Moose Skowron’s autograph, and maybe a couple others, on a baseball, but not sure where it is now.
Looking him up just now, I noticed he was only 5’11” and wondered how we got the nickname Moose.
Wikipedia:
One day his grandfather gave the seven-year-old Skowron a haircut resembling that of Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini. His friends jokingly calling him “Mussolini”, which his family shortened to “Moose.” The name stuck throughout his career.
That is hilarious. If the A’s had any prospects I’d hope one looked like Putin or Duterte or Bolsonaro or Kim Jong-un for similar high comedic nickname effect.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
At my parents’ old house trying to sort through 50 years of crap.
Found it.
Skowron’s autograph is the most faded.
It looks like the other three are Bobby Thomson, Johnny Sain, and maybe Glen Beckert.
If you're bored later, tune into the radio broadcast of tonight Mets v Brewers game on WCBS 880 on your dial. I'll be doing the color while Ed Coleman will be carrying the game doing the play-by-play.
I really hope they don’t just play Harrison/Pinder there for a week, or worse, call up Machin.
Would much rather watch Allen go 0-30 but get a little experience, and our playoff chances are the same either way.
The Rays will add a sign to the back wall at Tropicana Field for the postseason to promote their plan to split future seasons between Tampa Bay and Montreal.https://t.co/WdPfEb3Mzc
5-point loss to Nevada, 2-point loss to TCU and the OT loss to Washington on the fumble near the goal line. It’s not going to be the Bears’ year is it.
Raiders with 3 narrow wins over middle of the pack teams.
Denver with 3 big wins over 0-3 teams.
Both are better than I thought, but I’ll go out on a very short limb and say the AFC West standings are going to look different by the end of the season.
My Bills tied with Denver with a league-best +50 point differential. The opening loss to Pittsburgh, who seem to be just as crappy as I thought, still hurts, but I’m feeling better after two decisive wins. And no one else in the East seems that tough.
This is how it begins. Blackburn squeezed, 2 fluke plays sandwiching a solid base hit. Now we are tied, Harrison hurting. The script usually calls for a 3 run jack now.
I think there’s at least a chance that Ken has been doing this long enough anyway, shares the disgust (in his case particularly with calling the road games from the Coliseum) and will call his final six games this week. He’s coming up on 70 years old and doesn’t seem to need the money.
Certainly O’s and Rays (and Nats on the weekend if it still matters). I guess we should be pulling for the Yankees against the Jays, but I’m not sure I can do that.
Very instructive first inning. Just needed a bullpen blow up to be a one act play
1 run and 0 hits. 0 runs and 2 hits. Of course.
I dislike the errors-and-tootblans policy, but I’m on board with the hit-Astros-in-the-back policy.
Co-sign.
And it us much preferred to the boo them as they round the bases plan.
The Ken Burns documentary model is a bit tired by now, but man, Muhammad Ali is about the perfect subject.
Cool, now just need to hold a one-run lead for 6 innings.
I just want to hear vic give it to glen for a few more innings
I caught it too

They’re waking up!!
Montas back up to exactly 10K/9IP. 200 K, 180 IP.
Nice escape act by Frankie. Can’t help thinking though it’s like a MASH episode where the surgeon saves a kid only to have him go out into the bullpen’s machine gun fire.
Pinder really testing our bullpen’s commitment to the bit. The Aristocrats!
7 run lead. 4-5 more and it might feel comfortable.
Now?
No DieBBman no Romo.

You can’t stop Skye Bolt, you can only hope to contain him.
Bases loaded walk to Skye Bolt is a sneaky entry into the top 10 Astros pratfalls of the year.
We need to find a sneaky accountant to move some of these runs to the M’s series and get back into the race.
Kind of funny that this guy at some point dropped a sacrifice bunt in a game his team is now losing by 12 runs.
i wish i could enjoy this
Throw strikes
Siri, strike out please.
Anyone going today? More importantly, perhaps, is anyone tailgating?
Impressive (pre-integration) collection of all-time great players in one place. Equivalent today I suppose would be an old-timers game with Rickey, Eck, Clemens, Schmidt, Reggie, Strawberry, Bonds, Morgan, Bench, and 10 or so other HoF’ers from 1970s-80s.
They’ll probably never return but old timers games were awesome. Check out this catch by Willie Mays at age 50.
Not quite the same thing, but I went to 1 or 2 old-timers games when they had them annually before minor-league Buffalo Bisons games.

Cooperstown may not come calling but some Italian soccer clubs might be interested.
I am loving the blindingly bright yellow high-top cleats Manaea is rocking today.
I like what it did to the home plate ump on tuckers AB
Ken and Vince couldn’t agree on whether a foul tip was called or a swing was called.
TV and Gameday said foul tip, which the replay didn’t really show, but maybe the ump smelled the burned wood.
Stranding a pair has never come back to haunt us.
probably should score runs?
Worth a try.
kyle tucker. mother fucker
It is at least some comfort that the A’s aren’t just getting steamrollered by Houston this weekend.
Oh man, Khris, so close. Maybe three more inches.
Story of this year. Just out/just in.
Thank God we have Elvis here to save the day.
Sweet Lou!
I’m seeing a ton of those Last Dive Bar shirts in the TV shots. It’s a good look.
Agreed. Might pick up one myself.
Lousy at bat Seth. Need more focus there.
7 LOB the last 3 innings I believe? Sounds about 2021.
Can’t keep Marte down, hooray! Weird to have Celebration while the team crowds around fallen Elvis though.
Nick Allen has started hitting in AAA.
9 game hitting streak, 14-36 in that stretch.
how do we get him on the roster?
Kolarek. Or the guy we just picked up, Feliz.
Or move someone (Piscotty, Moreland, or Jefferies) to the 60-day DL if that is still allowed.
kolarek is still on the roster?
On the 40, yes.
oh my
Fisher might have to pay out an extra $273 for the week. So that’s a no.
I really hope they don’t just play Harrison/Pinder there for a week, or worse, call up Machin.
Would much rather watch Allen go 0-30 but get a little experience, and our playoff chances are the same either way.
Allen is in the LV lineup tonight. Do not like.
As the Machin and Skye Bolt lead us to the most improbable comeback in history!
fractured left tibia?
literal ouch
The tibia is the bigger weight-bearing bone. Recovery time six months minimum. Hope for the best for Elvis, seems like such a delightful person.
The Chron reports broken fibula which is a much less difficult injury to have.
Also Jed to the DL with sprained hand.
I could have transcribed it wrong.
Also, 541 plate appearances for anyone who is monitoring that
Sadly I think Elvis just answered this. Allen would be postseason eligible too.
piscotty to 60 and option bolt?
DFA Moreland?
I’ve said more than enough negative things about Elvis, but that was some heart making sure he made it home. I hope it is not serious.
Astros won’t win the division here at least.
Owners are the worst.
“And in Oakland, A’s President Dave Kaval unveiled an outfield sign telling fans ‘You Should Probably Go Somewhere Else'”
“If we moved to Vegas you’d be home by now”.
LOL
Did fisher pay for that?
I wonder how long before the A’s float the idea of splitting between Oakland and LV?
The Golden and Silver State Athletics.
Wow, today might be Soaker Day for the Padres. What the hell happened there?
That does seem like a possible destination for Bob.
Oh, man, Cal came so close!
5-point loss to Nevada, 2-point loss to TCU and the OT loss to Washington on the fumble near the goal line. It’s not going to be the Bears’ year is it.
Horrible at Petco yesterday. Witnesses saying the mom jumped with her toddler.
I’m not reading any of that
Chiefs in last place.
So far today the Raiders are playing like they want their cellar back.
The batgirls could end up as the only 3-0 team in the AFC.
Woo Hoo!!*
*I have not watched one snap.
Not the only one! Raiders tried their best to lose…gave up a pick-6, missed an extra point, let Dolphins convert a 4th and 20 in OT…but victory, baby.
Raiders with 3 narrow wins over middle of the pack teams.
Denver with 3 big wins over 0-3 teams.
Both are better than I thought, but I’ll go out on a very short limb and say the AFC West standings are going to look different by the end of the season.

Makes me happy.
Best three innings of Blackburn’s life?
A little better than his only previous start against Houston.
Also featuring a middle reliever with an ERA near 6, shortly before he was sent to the minors to work on things. Liam Hendriks, a mere 3 years go.
This is how it begins. Blackburn squeezed, 2 fluke plays sandwiching a solid base hit. Now we are tied, Harrison hurting. The script usually calls for a 3 run jack now.
We flipped the script at least.
And there’s our ‘pen.
Bolt (PR) and Machin (Sac) in the middle of that game-tying rally, as Aces predicted.
Mother fucker struck out
Siri, WTF was that?
Buntin’ Machin!
Canhot eliminate us today!
The Astros might never win again!
Wow, Korach with a reference to “the trips to Las Vegas.”
I think there’s at least a chance that Ken has been doing this long enough anyway, shares the disgust (in his case particularly with calling the road games from the Coliseum) and will call his final six games this week. He’s coming up on 70 years old and doesn’t seem to need the money.
he has over 30 years of bills to pay coming up and he knows it
So I guess I’m becoming an O’s fan for a week. This will be painful.
o’s and jays? just need to keep everyone under 91
I was thinking O’s and Rays.
Certainly O’s and Rays (and Nats on the weekend if it still matters). I guess we should be pulling for the Yankees against the Jays, but I’m not sure I can do that.
I guess this means Harrison is OK, or they would have needed a shortstop…right?
Hard to believe a guy with such a classical American stupidity is Canadian.
Yeesh this looks bad on paper.
Melvin saying “let’s test out if our luck really has changed.”
what the fresh hell is this?
And now the bullpen will have to get by without Michael Feliz.
Why is bolt if he in not playing center today?
Need Brown’s bat in the lineup god help us.
Pinder against a righty is better?
I’m no film buff, but fuck yeah buddy! I’d sit through the Mamma Mia movies 10 more times each to help spread this word.
If they play for 20 years that’s only once a year …
