Two batters, and two “and nobody’s gonna get it” calls into the game, it feels like it might be a long night.
Liam Hendriks is back in town. We may see him if the A’s can keep a game close enough.
T: Kaprielian vs. Jimmy Lambert
W: Montas vs. Keuchel
Th (day): Manaea vs. Reynaldo Lopez

I know this is obvious, but the worst part of this Titanic is that there is no way to just sit and enjoy the game. We go down by 8, not fun. But we go up by 8? Not fun..just dread for what is going to happen.
My FFB draft is tonight so I will at least be distracted.
And no Khris in the lineup for the throngs who turned out to see him.
Kape certainly has a knack for early trouble.
and middle inning trouble
At this pace the middle innings are going to last until spring training.
Warm enough that I’m rocking my vintage old country Bill King tee.
Chapman changed his walkup song. Puk warning in the pen, still funny-looking though.
SNAFU
no no, SNAPU
Emerson getting his steps in tonight
The game is still not official. Still time for a calamity to save us.
Earthquake, tornado, toxic gas from the Sunshine Biscuit plant. I’m not picky.
Young Moncsda released his first record this year. Disastro Personale. I am told
not on discogs
Ok, got what I came for
“We’re gonna get home and play our best stretch of baseball.” – Bob Melvin. And I’m glad you’re there for part of it!
That was a weird quote from Bob, defying all evidence and logic. I’m fine with managerial bravado and putting on a brave face, but it seemed unlike him. Hes not prone to wishcasting.
hey, larussa sat kimbrall down after that hit. Is that legal?
Oh for fucks sake tony
yay, he gonna steal?
Lost by just enough to get both Khris and Liam into the game.
Not gonna lie, I saw Liam with a big lead and thought “there’s a chance.” But I too was wishcasting.
Pretty uncanny how the collapse is mirroring 2014. Game 117 in ’14 seemed to start the tailspin as they went 7-16 the next 23 games. And from game 116 this year, they’re currently in a 7-16 stretch.
The ’14 team finished 9-14 after that. We’ll see how this team does.
Hard to think of something I want to click on less than “An oral history of Derek Jeter’s most iconic play.”
My subscription there is ending soon. That doesnt encourage me to start paying more.
An anal history of Derek Jeter’s most iconic play.
Another one for the Shohei is Great file.
Guy seems to love baseball.
WHy did he choose the angels?
Goodbye A.J. Puk. Maybe we’ll see you again, maybe we won’t.
Interesting, the A’s must think Puk needs to work on something more fundamental than getting the benefit of more “big league experience.” I guess Vegas plays right through the end of Sept (and there are no MiLB playoffs this year).
Bassitt and Fiers both starting to throw.
It will be like getting an ace and a #5 starter after we are already out of the playoffs.
Yeah this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense from the team’s perspective. For Bassitt there’s probably something of a get right back up on the horse dynamic. Don’t let any fear linger through the off-season. Fiers needs to convince someone they should hire him next year, please not us.
Bassitt has been so insistent that he is coming back this season that you almost have to go along until you get to the point where he has a hitter and doesn’t have a screen. (And of course Dr’s say it is ok..)
Fiers?? I mean we’re paying him so I guess keep him amused.
didn’t they release fiers?
Although seeing him activated to plunk 9 astros in a row in houston would be sweet
That would be great because the umps would have to also be allowing it to happen.
Almost dead center in the bottom left quadrant, closest to the New Liberal Party.
this may be the entirety of what you miss out on when you decide to stop giving nick, bret, and paul your money.
I’m sorry, they want to do historic preservation on the jet-fuel burning power plant?
Naomi has been using historic preservation pretexts to stop development since the 70s. No lie, I once heard her threaten to try to landmark the Coliseum to thwart tear down and replace schemes of an earlier era.
You can’t tear down the building where Jeter’s most iconic play happened!
Heartbreaking losses, like industrial pollution, are an important part of Oakland’s history, and hence must continue in perpetuity.
I know FSUs are frowned upon in many places but this is ridiculous.
Houston, where zoning lets you build a battery factory or pig fat rendering plant in a residential neighborhood, but stay in your damn seat or else.
Looks like Arizona.
You never know when Sheriff Joe may be sitting behind you.
Damnit. OK, swap out the zoning joke for an exurban sprawl joke.
today i learned that the respect hat hid is derek jeter’s nephew.
Makes the dominance of the gif kinda lame, really
did i mess a double play?
Glen and Braden going on about how bad Keuchel has been is clearly the set yp for tonight’s no-hitter.
Didn’t he already pith a no hitter this year? when he was with the yankees?
I 100% believe this is her truth and know that is it certainly not what happened
I saw that earlier and felt bad for not believing a lot of it.
that’s the thing, it’s frustrating because she and so many people believe that ois what happened.
But there is no way to combat misinformation like that. the actions described would 100% get the person arrested and put in jail. the cops wouldn’t 5150 the guy because that is more paperwork than arresting him and having his public defender declare a doubt to his competence.
I do believe that they couldn’t get a civil restraining order, sure, but if the guy wasn’t arrested, i doubt things happened the way she described.
I don’t know this stuff nearly as well as you do, but it did sound off to me when I read it earlier.
The bad part is that it gets amplified uncritically in this case because she is fame-adjacent.
It’s also possible that some things happened in non-standard ways because it is (presumably) a rich community and the perp could be the son of someone powerful.
or son of a cop
it all tracked for me until the free scotch.
that never happens.
I mean, if he stole the scotch and didn’t get arrested, i see why she is so mad
The Chronicle article is completely useless, doesn’t even say what city they live in or what police department responded:
Maybe assign that story to the cops reporter, not the baseball beat writer.
Still waiting for any actual reporting that doesn’t just regurgitate her post…
The pitch and predict thing is worse than the wind info. It is purely some gambling setup being tested.
what’s the line on a splitter here?
I’m saving my bets for when the bullpen comes in. Easy $.
Ugh, the vuvuzelas are out in Honduras.
what is this?
Four-time gold glover.
Maybe he thought he needed to back up a bit to avoid the short hop, but it still doesn’t really make sense.
Frankie knows he needs to throw 0’s AND pitch a CG. He may ask to hit at some point.
this clásico is looking bad for barça.
The Frankie redemption arc has been great to see. I’ll be rooting for him next year when he’s gunning for the Cy with some NL team.
Keuchel bad, as advertised.
You have to let Frankie start the 8th right?
Someone sit on Melvin so he can’t try to get Trivino “a chance to work on things”.
phEWSA
Must have come close to getting Trinidad and Tobogganed again?
Too early in the process to get fully tobaggoned, but things were certainly trending that way at halftime.
Here we go. Best stretch of baseball has begun!
It’s the start of the season-scale teAse. It will come down to needing to win 12 of the final 13 vs. Seattle and Houston, and they’ll win the first 9.
@Soaker, Bassitt starts the 10th game. Goes 6 strong giving up 1 run…
A’s win, US wins. I should take the night off sports more often.
Saturday afternoon, please, that would be good with a couple of East Bay vs. Metroplex games. The A’s host the dreaded Rangers while the Golden Bears, trying to avoid an 0-2 nonconference start, are +11 in Fort Worth vs. the Horned Frogs.
Forbes (@Forbes) Tweeted:
The University of California at Berkeley is in the No. 1 spot on the Forbes list of America’s Top Colleges this year.
These stats help explain why @UCBerkeley is the first public college to ever top the list.

Some have contested the “great sports” characterization (though of course not the #1 ranking), but we understand that greatness is not defined by vulgar measures such as the scoreboard or the standings.
Per the profile, by way of example of faculty strength, Forbes cites their role in developing the A-bomb, so…
As a townie I’m proud of our local school. My Alma Mater once laid claim to the mythical Best Public University title, but has dropped a lot, with good reason. Cheating scandals and racism-tainted tenure fights will do that.
… and also the top producer of Peace Corps members!
But yes, it’s an odd list of accomplishments to have “had a hand in”.
Chapel Hill hasn’t really “dropped a lot” though. It’s #4 on that list among public universities outside of California, and right up there with Ann Arbor and Seattle. Gainesville is above it too but their statistics must have glitched on that one.
Our advantage in mascot unsexiness clearly put us on top.
1) these rankings are stupid
2) cal is a very good school
3) I am very proud to have graduated from a normal school
I used to think the rankings were stupid until today.
they can have some pretty stupid criteria.
USN&WR has a criterion weighing 20% where heads of universities rank other universities. just like that. out of the blue. whether they’ve been there or not. just… reputation.
faculty resources can measure tenure only, not adjuncts, a 30/70 split.
a lot is measured though endowment and that gets all sorts of skewed vis a vis race and class. oh sorry i mean tradition.
forbes measures graduation rate. also race class problematic.
there’s a revisionist history or two this season where the USN&WR guy in charge of his rankings is really made to squirms a bit. so satisfying. even though he doesn’t get it.
Any rankings that like Columbia that much are odd.
Are they still stupid?
In this one (which I guess is the one AV is referring to above), 19 private schools rank ahead of UCLA. UC Berkeley is #2 public/#22 overall. The Primeras also make this list at #T5 public/#T28 overall. Ann Arbor and Charlottesville are #3 and #4 public, and the #T5 is between Santa Barbara, Gainesville and (starts fight at Thanksgiving dinner table) Chapel Hill.
yes, still stupid
Clearly Forbes is onto something.
When Harrison does that is it a toot-tootblan?
surprised marte went to second
Larussa remembering having a guy in Oakland who disrupted the other team.
If Romo was up in the 7th I look forward to finding out who Melvin gets when he calls Dial-A-Closer today.
OK but we’ve probably pushed the Chafin thing as far as it’s gonna go.
He seems like a way better bet than Romo.
A “less bad” bet than Romo, I might buy.
I guess Manaea is fixed as long as he gets 5-6 days rest between starts.
Oakland has BART men but not Bartman.
Series win against a good opponent. Yay!
76-64 means they would need to go 14-8 to get to 90 wins, which is usually around what it takes to get a wild card berth. This year it might take a little more. Boston and NYY can get to 90 wins by playing .500 ball, and Toronto is close to that; presumably at least 2 of those 3 will manage to do so. So a better target would be 16-6, for 92 wins. Not impossible, but an awfully tall order, especially with 6 games still to play against the *’s.
Anyway, the easier part is up next: Texas, @KC, @LAA. Need to really crush those to keep any hope alive at all.
The BP is what it is at this point, and we’re just going to have to hope for positive volatility instead of the recent run of negative volatility. It’s possible in the small sample of games remaining they have to get through.
Things really hinge on the rotation. It’s a little insensitive considering the guy is recovering from being hit in the face, but the simple fact is that Bassitt needs to come back soon and pitch well if they’re to have a chance. You can’t pull off a strong consistent run when Blackburn, Irvin, and tired Kap is 3/5 of the rotation. And I still think Bailey/Jefferies should be options here too.
Blackburn falling behind to Texas in the 1st inning does not bode well.

So i was in the car…billy hamilton?
Another game ignored, another A’s win. I may never watch again!
Manaea has chance to post the strikey-outiest season of any starting pitcher in A’s history? I had no idea.
Montas right there with him (181 K in 163 2/3 IP is 9.95 K/9. One extra K would put him above 10.0)
In Vida Blue’s amazing 1971 season (301 K in 312 IP, 1.82 ERA, 8 shutouts) his 8.7 K/9 led the league. This year just in the A’s rotation, Manaea, Montas, Bassitt, and Kaprielian all have higher K rates than that.
strike out and home run records aren’t really interesting in this era, yeah?
I blame Jack Cust.
Hmm, for my post-work/pre-A’s game entertainment do I watch the Mets-Yankees commemorate the destruction of civil liberties, a tennis match between an abuser and an antivaxxer, or stab myself with a fork? Fork’s looking good.
Jays and o’s is fun
seriously though i like personalities in baseball, but hyde should be suspended
Don’t mess with a man wearing pants that tight.
Robbie Ray with the double anthropomorphic, Rabbit Ears and Moose Knuckle.
Counterpoint: chirping is fine, and there should be more of it. Sticks and stones, etc.
Can’t stop laughing at this one
Fernando abad
inexplicably he was charged with a hold
I would’ve thought it was a block, no feet set.
Two minutes for interference.
I went with folding laundry and listening to Neil Young.
A friend once told me that “folding laundry” was the euphemism for smoking pot that he and his friends used in college when they were in mixed company. “I’m gonna go fold laundry.” “Oh yeah, maybe I’ll do that too.” Undoubtedly fooling many.
I also did my laundry tonight, and decided to go fold it instead of watching Diekman pitch. Not the euphemism version, although that has helped get through some Diekman outings as well.
Never heard that one. Me and my peers variously used “talk with the Mayor” (after Baltimore Mayor Kurt Schmoke) and “see Earl’s sister” (who had the stuff).
the fuck bob?
Better get chafin up
This wild card race is a real cluster. Five teams within two games for two spots.
