West Dallas 90-92 ← FREE KRAUT!

West Dallas 90-92 125

Oakland heads to the shed for the last series before the break.

Irvin vs. Jordan Lyles, Fri 5:05
Kaprielian vs. Foltynewicz, Sat 1:05
Bassitt vs. Kolby Allard, Sun 11:35

We miss Kyle Gibson again, but Allard is also having a good year, and Foltynewicz has had two good starts against us.

      Murphy is so slow that the Rangers gifted away a 5-2-3 double play on that.

    If the A’s can’t hit enough to curb stomp the crappy Rangers most of the time then they have no chance. Not even really a contender.

      That play on Chapman at second base, I wondered how the umpire got that wrong in the first place. It looked like he had a perfect view and the safe call was obvious at quick glance.

            Yeah plus the entire lineup shit the bed against Jordan Lyles.

            I don’t usually believe that firing coaches really changes anything but at this point, you’d have to take a hard look at what Darren Bush is contributing to the team and how guys like Murphy, Chapman, Laureano, Pinder, Piscotty have taken massive steps back in their approach and production.

            The one guy having a breakout year at the plate, Olson, strongly credited the assistant hitting coach with helping him this year.

      The notion that the M Resort area is a “leading candidate” has me doing the John McEnroe imitation. That place is waaaaay out at the very fringe of the developed area. The land would be cheap and they could build, oh, a concrete bowl surrounded by enormous parking lots. If they are seriously thinking of that, honestly they would have been far better off pushing harder for Fremont 15 years ago. That’s far from a lot of the population of Alameda and Contra Costa counties but has San Jose on the other side. Nuthin’ on the other side of the M Resort but coyotes and roadrunners.

      If Fisher started trying to buy sand and scrub brush out there I almost think MLB would step in and say, “No, if we’re going to have a team in Las Vegas we want it to be successful and your miserly choice of that site would prevent that.”

        This year is among the least predictable drafts and a big part of that is that the top college hitters were pretty inconsistent. There is a deep crop of HS SS and lots of depth due to the shortened draft this year.

      His velocity dropped and I think he had some meh starts in the latter half of the season. If the A’s took him, we’d be scheduling his TJS right about now.

    • aardvark Jul 11,2021 6:04 pm || Up

      He was highly regarded coming out of high school but made it pretty clear he was going to college so he’d been the early favorite for the #1 pick in this draft for years. His velocity was down early in the year and some think he may be a reliever in the end, which partly explain him dropping.

    • lenscrafters Jul 11,2021 6:19 pm || Up

      With 6 picks to go, what do you think of the remaining crop of prep position players? Seems likely that quite a few of Taylor, Muncy, Kath, Pacheco, Baez, Chandler would still be there.

      The A’s have such a small bonus pool though so I dunno whether Taylor and Chandler are in play.

      • aardvark Jul 11,2021 6:43 pm || Up

        No strong opinion here. I just hope they don’t try anything cute.

      • aardvark Jul 11,2021 7:00 pm || Up

        A’s do indeed go Max Muncy. From BA:

        Muncy, who is not related to the Dodgers star of the same name, is a high-energy player with an athletic, strong body. He shows above-average hitting ability with a knack for driving the ball the other way and has the strong hands and wrists to project 20-plus home run potential. He studies opposing pitchers, has a mature approach and is rarely overmatched. Muncy tinkered with his stance and swing early this season and struggled, getting disconnected between his upper and lower halves and showing a long swing that was late to velocity, but he returned to his previous setup and swing at the end of the year and re-established himself as one of the top prep hitters in Southern California. He finished the regular season batting .452 with nine home runs while mostly facing good high school competition. Defensively, Muncy is an above-average runner with the instincts and footwork for shortstop, although he likely will have to move to third base if he gets bigger. He has the short-area quickness and above-average arm strength for the hot corner and enough athleticism to potentially play second base. Muncy’s hitting ability, athleticism and potential defensive versatility have him in top-two rounds consideration. He is committed to Arkansas.

    In round 2 the A’s take Zach Gelof:

    Gelof was a talented two-way player at a strong Cape Henlopen program in Lewes, Del., and was the Delaware Gatorade Player of the Year in 2018. He made it to Virginia after the Indians drafted him in the 38th round and has been a consistent offensive presence for the Cavaliers since stepping on campus. Gelof hit .300/.380/.464 with eight home runs in 57 games this spring and has a solid all-around tool set to go with his solid track record as a hitter in the ACC. Gelof has above-average raw power, though most of his in-game homers have gone to left field this spring. That’s not to say he’s a super pull-oriented hitter, as he has the ability to shoot balls to the opposite field, but for now his power plays mostly to the pull side. Gelof has no issues at all catching up to velocity and hammered fastballs this spring, but has struggled with secondary pitches, particularly recognizing and driving breaking stuff. He does have a knack for the barrel and lowered his strikeout rate this spring, but at times gets off-balance in his swing. Scouts seem split on his defensive ability, with some seeing an above-average defender with average arm strength at the hot corner, and others believing he’ll need to move to a corner outfield position in the long term because he’s struggled to throw from multiple arm slots. Gelof is an average runner but has good instincts on the bases and went 31-for-38 (82%) in stolen base attempts in his career.

    Round 3, Mason Miller:

    Miller is older for the class after spending four seasons at Division III Waynesburg, and he’ll turn 23 shortly after the draft, but he has a big arm and pitched well this spring for Gardner-Webb in the Big South. Miller led the Bulldogs in innings pitched (92.2) and posted a 3.30 ERA over 14 starts, while striking out 121 batters (11.8 K/9) and walking 30 (2.9 BB/9). That walk rate was easily the best of his collegiate career, so there is bound to be some skepticism about whether or not his control has taken a step forward, but it was solid this spring. Miller throws a fastball that sits in the 94-96 mph range fairly consistently and runs the pitch up to 99 at his best. He generated a lot of whiffs with a low-80s slider that showed hard, two-plane break out of the zone and also mixed in a mid-80s changeup. Miller has a solidly built, 6-foot-5, 200-pound frame and throws from a three-quarter arm slot with solid downhill plane thanks to his height and long levers.

    Round 4, Denzel Clarke (I like this pick ask he’s got some intriguing potentual):

    A cousin of Indians outfielder Josh Naylor, Clarke starred for Canada’s junior national teams growing up and was drafted by the Mets in the 36th round out of high school. He made his way to Cal State Northridge and began to blossom as a sophomore in 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic shut down the season. He got off to a slow start this spring but exploded in the second half to become one of the fastest risers in the draft class. Clarke is a physical specimen at 6-foot-5, 220 pounds and has some of the best power potential in this year’s draft class. He has huge raw power that is easily plus, and he still has room to get stronger and add even more. Clarke was previously a raw hitter who swung at everything and struggled to keep his swing in sync, but he’s improved rapidly the last two years. He now stays on breaking balls, has begun walking more and is doing a better job of keeping his swinging consistent. His improvements to his approach, combined with his natural strength and leverage, give him a chance to be a fringe-average hitter. Clarke has a chance to stick in center field despite his size. He is a plus runner with good instincts and impressive athleticism. His below-average arm will limit him to left field if he has to move. Clarke’s swing still gets out of sync and he has to show he can maintain his improved approach against better competition. His power and athleticism have teams interested late on the draft’s first day or early on the draft’s second day.
