Boston in town

Oh boy, check out the Merc article Andeux linked to, such a dumb team. Why do we care

Montas v Rodriguez
Irvin v Richards (415)
Kaprilian v Pivetta (105)

I will not be watching any of it, I choo choo choose to not see red hats (I assume).

I did see the Jays in Canada red yesterday (not my favorite shade, but fine, I get it) and also saw the Jays with a July 4th hat on today, so, gross.

      I don’t think Chris Sale is traveling with the team, but Melvin and Canha should have asked the Red Sox for contact information for advice on what to do with those things. I don’t see how Bob can possibly think clearly wearing one of those.

      I’m planning my return to professional sports for this coming Thirsty Thursday in Reno. Luzardo’s fifth day would be Wednesday but that’s the AAA-West off day, so Thursday seems his likely next turn. Reno is every bit the launching pad Vegas is and the Aces lead AAA-West in scoring with 7.7 runs/game and in home runs (92 in 50 games).

    Watching Montas is so tiresome. Poor fastball command, little to no feel for the breaking pitches so there’s always at least one per at bat spiked in the dirt, gets ahead of the count but still ends up walking guys because of the two aforementioned issues.

    Good point from Steve Berman:

    There was one moment in the game where one had to wonder if Brown is long for the active roster. It came in the seventh inning when Chad Pinder was left in to face a right-handed reliever, and Garrett Whitlock struck him out looking. Melvin didn’t seem to be too concerned with Brown’s decision-making on the basepaths in the 10th, but not being used as a pinch hitter in that situation (Pinder is slashing .169/.214/.292 against righties this season) spoke volumes.

      not scoring on the hit was fine, tagging up may have been a little more on the bad side defensible decision, not a great one, but not terrible

    • andeux Jul 3,2021 10:39 am || Up

      The use of Brown as the (essentially) PR is a little odd. Ed pointed it out at the time, though I didn’t even think about the fact that Bolt was also available.
      Maybe the logic was: with three slow guys (Lowrie, Murphy, Schwindel) due up, we are going to use another PR if one of them gets on, and speed is more likely to be important for the trailing runner than for the one starting on second. That makes some sense, but sure didn’t work out.

          Right, he came in at the top of the 10th, already knowing that spot would be starting the bottom of the inning on 2nd base. They didn’t know that a second runner would matter, but it was not unreasonable to plan for that.

    Those preseason projections that had them at 82-80…is there a reason to doubt them? They had a 13-game winning streak, the final 11 of which were against Arizona, Detroit, Minnesota and Baltimore, and they are 35-36 the rest of the time. Pythagorean W-L of 45-39 is 9-1/2 games behind the Astros’ 54-29. An elite closer would push the rest of the relievers back into their more suitable roles, but any of those would be very expensive and Rosenthal isn’t going to be up to that in September even if he comes back at all. Tony Kemp (!) has been a major contributor in the first half, Chad Pinder can’t hit RHP, a bunch of guys on the active roster can’t hit anybody and the middle infield even when playing well makes more creaking noises than an old storm-battered condominium tower in south Florida. How much is it worth giving up for another shot at a wild-card play-in game?

      Problems solved!

      The last couple weeks do seem to have exposed the problems we knew were there all along: Lack of depth for the offense. A bad bullpen. And Luzardo and Montas aren’t going to suddenly “figure it out.”

      There are positives too, of course. Bassitt has been excellent, the back of the rotation surprisingly decent. There are enough good and ok hitters that they will have another hot streak or two.

      And even if we are “really” a .500 team, we still have 12 games over that already in the back. 39-39 the rest of the way puts us at 87-75. So it’s not a stretch to think we can still be a little better than that, and finish with 90+ wins and another playoff berth again.
      But, yeah, winning the division or beating a good team in a playoff series is looking a lot less likely.

      TINSTAAFK
    • Future Ed Jul 3,2021 11:35 am || Up

      Their 1 run game luck is certainly reverting. You are probably right, the 82-80 was a good center point for the projection.

      Lenscrafters’ suggestion of Garcia and Marte from miami would be a good fit of course, I don’t see 2022 being a better time to go for it, the Astros and Angels will be able to spend this off season, and the Mariners are getting interesting.

      I don’t know if there is enough talent to get either of those.

        I don’t see 2022 being a better time to go for it, the Astros and Angels will be able to spend this off season, and the Mariners are getting interesting.

        I think that’s what it comes down to me. If the last couple of weeks of offensive ineptitude are any indication, losing Canha in FA after this year is going to push this offense firmly into bad territory. They’ve bled offensive talent every year of this contention window with little effort to replace what they’ve lost (Semien -> Andrus being the most stark downgrade so far) so I just don’t see things getting better.

        The team’s best chance was last year, but that was affected by the pandemic and the Chapman injury. This year could’ve been pretty close with just a reasonable investment, but obviously that didn’t happen. So they’re left with a still functioning core and some obvious but fixable holes that are dragging the rest of the team down, and the trade deadline is the last gasp to try to make it work.

        For me, I also don’t think the current state of the farm has anything worth fretting over losing, except for Soderstrom and maybe Allen, so anything not bolted down can go.

      I thought I was one of the last DirecTV customers but Vince is still using it. Youtube TV has been a good replacement, except for the fact that it runs on my Spectrum ISP service which can be glitchy due to the continued use of 1970s technology in my neighborhood. Fiber? What’s that? I see these ads for Comcast and AT&T for 1 gig or 2 gig download speeds; I max out at 50 Mbps.

      Issue coming in the future: Comcast is looking to sell the NBC Sports-branded RSNs and Sinclair has made an initial offer. The problem would be that Youtube TV doesn’t have a carriage agreement with Sinclair for its “Bally Sports” RSNs, so if a deal were to be made there I wouldn’t be able to use Youtube TV to watch the A’s, or the Giants for that matter.

      What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
      • FreeSeatUpgrade Jul 4,2021 10:57 am || Up

        Oh, please, not Sinclair.

        Two years ago I ditched my AT&T plus Direct TV accounts because my specific location got poor internet speeds. Switched to Comcast, which solved the internet speed issue, but stuck me with their god awful TV interface. Sonic is almost done stringing their fiber in Berkeley, so I may well move to their internet, which will leave me with the TV choice of Direct TV vs cord cutting. Not sure the latter will fulfil my sports programming needs yet.

        "Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
        • Soaker Jul 4,2021 11:32 am || Up

          Sinclair already owns most of the RSNs and is working on an OTT product. It’s expected to be ready in 2023 and the projected initial price would be about $23 per month per channel (NY Post link). Pricey but around the same as a full-price MLB.tv season subscription, though if you also want to watch the Warriors or Sharks you would have to pay for 12 months, not 6. A lot of negotiating has to happen but there have been a number of stories in recent months indicating that MLB realizes the cable/satellite model is on its last legs and streaming will be the distribution channel going forward.

          What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
        • andeux Jul 4,2021 1:40 pm || Up

          For me, besides the carriage issue, the problems with cord-cutting for sports are:
          – Overall reliability. My internet is at the opposite side of the house from the TV, and there are a ton of competing wifi networks nearby. I have a repeater to boost wifi signal, and overall wifi reliability has also improved (maybe firmware improvements in the ATT router), but I do still get occasional buffering or drop outs. Not a big deal if watching a TV show, but much more annoying for live sports. Maybe not a problem for you, if you have your router near your TV, or have your house wired with ethernet.
          – Delay. My experience is that terrestrial radio and the gameday boxscore are still pretty close to real time, digital cable is a few seconds (sometimes about 1 pitch) behind, but streaming (even without any buffering issues) is often 30 seconds or more behind that. That’s enough to be really annoying if you tend to keep a boxscore or FK open while watching. Again, YMMV.

          Also, the comcast dvr seems fine to me, but maybe I just don’t know what I’m missing with the alternatives.

          TINSTAAFK
          • nevermoor Jul 12,2021 2:14 pm || Up

            I’m still ATT / DTV because Sonic isn’t coming to Marin any time soon, so I’d have to use Comcast to get better internet and I’m just not willing to do it.

            What I have streams fine for the various services (Netflix/Disney/Prime) so I’m (at least temporarily) satisfied. Eventually, though, the DVR model is going to need to switch to just content catalogs of on-demand stuff and that’ll kill DTV.

    Rules point I thought of as I tossed and turned thinking about this game overnight. I assume both managers were aware of this at the time.

    Moreland was required to take his turn at bat leading off the second inning under 5.11(a)(2):

    (2) The Designated Hitter named in the starting lineup must come to bat at least one time, unless the opposing Club changes pitchers.

    I knew that rule but did not consider the consequences of Melvin substituting Schwindel for Moreland in that spot. Had Schwindel done anything to the A’s benefit in that plate appearance, Cora could have appealed and had Moreland declared out under 6.03(b)(1).

    (b) Batting Out of Turn
    (1) A batter shall be called out, on appeal, when he fails to bat in his proper turn, and another batter completes a time at bat in his place.

    Bob had notified the umpire that Schwindel would be batting in that spot…but Schwindel was ineligible to do so. In any case, Schwindel popped out, he was leading off the inning so no runner advanced, and under 6.03(b)(5) Schwindel’s pop out became the valid outcome of the plate appearance.

    (5) When an improper batter becomes a runner or is put out, and a pitch is made to the next batter of either team before an appeal is made, the improper batter thereby becomes the proper batter, and the results of his time at bat become legal.

    This situation has come up three times for the A’s in the last 45 seasons, so just something to keep in a very remote, dusty corner of your brain.

    What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
    • andeux Jul 4,2021 10:11 am || Up

      I didn’t know that rule.

                If it’s a positive test he would have had to come out of the game immediately. There was a shot of him talking to Bob in the dugout and he was not wearing a mask though.

                If it’s “your kid just got hit by a car” I understand leaving immediately.

                Short of something like that, as explained in the rules comment above the A’s forfeited an out by him leaving at that time, assuming Cora knew the rule. I would expect him to stick around for another 20 minutes or whatever and take the plate appearance, and if he got on base Bob would have pinch-run. Costing the team an out by leaving for any reason other than dire necessity is about the worst violation of the unwritten rules one could commit.

      Ken and Vince think the rule requiring the listed DH to bat once was waived in this case due to “injury or other legitimate reason” but I don’t see any provision for such a waiver in the rules or any notes thereto. If Schwindel had reached base I believe he would have been ordered back to the dugout and Moreland would have been charged with an at bat and called out. If the umpire told Cora “well it’s OK for Schwindel to bat there because Bob told me such and such” Cora would have had grounds to protest the game. Schwindel’s pop up is what spared us any of this drama.

      What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
      • Soaker Jul 4,2021 2:29 pm || Up

        Last point on this: Earl Weaver caused the change in the DH rule to require the one plate appearance. Earl was putting the previous day’s starting pitcher in the lineup as the DH and then choosing his real DH when that spot came up in the lineup, for example in this game where Jim Palmer was the starting DH and was pinch-hit for by Terry Crowley to lead off the second inning.

        Earl wasn’t the type to sac bunt the first time through the lineup and I don’t think he ever gained an advantage by doing this; he was being farcical to point out a deficiency in the rule. But one can imagine Gene Mauch putting a starting pitcher who was a good bunter in the starting lineup as DH and pinch-hitting for him if it wasn’t a bunting situation.

      Dick did not DH. He played 1B or he didn’t play at all. He started one game as the DH for the White Sox in 1973 and probably told the manager after that, no more. He did pinch-hit for a DH late in one game the following year.

      On April 10, 1977, the A’s played a doubleheader vs. Minnesota. Dick played the entire first game at 1B. For Game 2 he was listed on the lineup card as the DH batting 4th. He must not have been consulted about it, and once he found out said, Fuck That. So he was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the 1st. This was before the Earl Weaver rule was written so there was no penalty to the A’s. He was never in the lineup as a DH again.

    I finally got a chance to listen to the KQED Forum with Kaval from a couple days ago. FKers aren’t Millenials or GenZ, we’re a bunch of 20th century dinosaurs (listen to his comments at about 43:00). As FSU commented a while back it seems like the plethora of sites being considered in Vegas indicates they’re more willing to consider the dinosaurs’ preferences down there.

    It doesn’t break any new ground. Kaval and the gentleman representing the shipping companies don’t agree on a single thing. The community activist from West Oakland is generally in favor of improvements in the Howard Terminal area so I’d say he leans in favor of the A’s vs. the shippers, but he doesn’t really trust Fisher and Kaval enough to endorse the ballpark as the right project for the area. EM didn’t get a chance to do much but help the host with setting the backstory but her comments about the Coliseum site did provoke Kaval to make the Millenials/GenZ comments.

    If you play the Kaval drinking game (every time he says “I think it’s important to remember…”) you’ll be thoroughly hosed at the end of the 53 minutes.

    Any of you know about wiki editing? A “legit” label is issuing a double 45 EP of some of SLF’s first band‘s songs from the mid 90s and they are trying to figure out how to make an online presence.

      Do you mean for wikipedia?
      Anyone can make/edit an article about anything, but you aren’t supposed to make one for yourself (tough to enforce because of pseudonymity), and there are guidelines about notability.
      So you (someone) could make a page for them, but there is a decent chance someone would come along and delete it for lack of notability.

      I see that the label (at the very least you could add the release to the list there) and one of her bandmates have pages.

        oh, look at that. Yeah she is something.

        So, I could theoretically put something together, but would need citations and still may get booted because I am too close to them?

        I also doubt zines from the 90s are online in any meaningful way

      Clicked through the label link and I am shocked by how out-of-date the SFTRI webpage is. It looks like they stopped putting out music some time around 2004, which I know isn’t true…

          It seemed like they were also a little proud of how janky their website is.

            Are they also still proud of the nazi-ish logo?

    There are written rules too dave

    If his were not a famous case it would be charged already and well on it’s way to a resolution that may involve a misdemeanor battery and classes. Possibly even diversion were with good behavior he could have the case dismissed

      But because it is a famous case there’s $100 million over three years that could be a target in a civil case. I understand why these guys stonewall.

        In big cases like this juries seem to take the presumption of innocence very seriously. Like OJ, he killed those people, but the prosecution had been lulled by years of not having to meet the beyond a reasonable doubt standard they mad lazy and reckless mistakes. I believe that the right verdict was reached, while acknowledging he killed those people with premeditation and deliberation.

        here they are taking it very slowly because they know the case will blow their budget and it’s a no win from a PR stand point

        Also, they got trev to put out a statement that he absolutely should not have (it is an open question whether it was HIS statement that can be admissible in the prosecutions case in chief but it absolutely would be used to impeach him if trevor would take the stand. And I have have dozens of clients like him and taking the stand is something he absolutely will insist on doing. One guy was I couldn’t stop so I couldn’t put the expert I hired for his defense on the stand to contradict my client.

        Also, I have heard those pretext calls a bunch. they are always so vague, but so damaging.

    I see these pitching coaches go out to the mound and cup their hand over their mouth as they are talking to the pitcher. I would take a lesson from the pandemic. Keep a mask in your pocket and strap it over your ears as you’re heading out there. Say your piece to the pitcher and catcher, no worries about lip reading.
