This is a good song about shooting cowboys.

Frankie Montas’s visit to the Metroplex has not started well, giving up five runs to nine Rangers hitters, who do not bat around.
Still wrong.
hopefully skye will make no argument a bout the A’s batting around
There’s no argument. They didn’t do it.
Don’t sleep on the Big River part of that video, the fat man rocks.
what’d I miss?
Elvis got a heartfelt ovation and tipped his helmet
that is sweet. I like how the A’s play the walk up music
can the A’s sign Khris davis by the 6th?
reminiscing fosse is better than analyzing fosse
Here he says he came to texas after Gaylord perry went there and Perry yells “hey pardner, he won’t call it” across the the field. Meaning Jim sunberg didn’t want the spit ball because he couldn’t throw out runners with a slippy ball
Frankie, looks great. must have gotten though the inspection then loaded up
His pitches in the first seemed less lively for sure
frankie knuckles aka prancy francie aka knucklebird
is our newest kitten.
That sleeveless hoodie the Rangers manager is wearing is worse for the game than spider tack.
The pitching coach has a different cutoff hoodie. This is out of control.
sun’s outside the ballpark, guns inside the ballpark
Mitch and Elvis still doing well for the Rangers.
does chapman come in?
why isn’t this reviewable?
huh.
Yuck.
I would often give it a *click* at 8-2, but not against the Texas Rangers.
I had a longer comment working, about how the A’s failed to cash in chances then bled more runs when the situations were reversed. Then like the A’s I failed to deliver.
[mark all comments as sad]
Tomorrow’s game is (I think a first for the A’s) a Youtube exclusive.
Great, Buck Showalter.
And Yonder Alonso?
seems fine
“Huh??” – Showalter
“SHUT UP” – me
I endorse this message.
On the plus side it got me to “World of Waves,” now filling air time on NBCCNSACSN, Aussie surfers are soothing.
Hal the Hot Dog Economist weighs in on Howard Terminal
lemme guess. “oakland should bend over backwards because i once sold hot dogs at wrigley and hoo-boy in-town stadiums are great.”
A little better than that. Focuses on the idea that all the associated non-ballpark development is real and would benefit the city. I’m not sure I totally buy it, but he seems well-informed.
Also that the associated non-ballpark development won’t happen without a ballpark, and that a privately-financed ballpark can’t happen without associated development to finance it.
I haven’t read Hal’s piece yet, but the bit you’ve quoted is spot on. For 20+ years the Jack London area has been the local Grail of potential, and not only has it not been realized, little has even gotten started, and every time because the capital evaporated, favoring instead building one-off apartment projects offering more certain profits, faster. Who else is going to spend ambitiously enough to build anything with commercial/retail staying power, that can truly make a place exponentially? The Port? Tech? Lonely Planet? They’ve had wide-open chance at relatively cheap land for decades, and haven’t done shit.
omar who reports on every city meeting says he’s not well informed.
Eh, yeah, the pieces of the deal change and the very likely County buy-in will help a lot. “Literally know less if you read it” is ridiculous.
baseball player Wander Franco…Still good
Chapman crushed that fastball.
The poor pitchers storyline is getting really tired really quick.
Is the man named Jed turning into a pumpkin?
Not yet.
NOT DEAD YET!
He reminds me a bit of the 2014 version of Lowrie who was just ok, but you were glad he was on team because he was preventing the Andy Parrinos from finding their way into the lineup.
Oh man, I recently looked up the 2014 roster because I couldn’t believe Jed was really our full time shortstop. Other options that year were Andy Parrino, Nick Punto, and Alberto Callaspo (Eric Sogard got most of the 2B starts). Yuck.
Can you pls include a trigger warning before possibly sending me down a road that leads to Jim Johnson?
I was mostly right!
I was at the 4th of july game that little nicky punto won in the 12th or so. That was good times.
Yes, and then Samardzija happened right after.
“And the A’s have batted around” – Ken Korach, correctly.
he grew up in LA metro like I did, Vin Scully always said this
I like the frequency of this argument on this blog right now.
A’s receive the opening kickoff, are set back to the 2-yard line with the penalty on the return, then grind out a 22-play, 98-yard drive for the score.
This youtube crew doesn’t even bother with play by play during the sideline interview.
Fucking hell, not even for Ramon annihilating a ball for a 3 run jack
The important thing is Soaker now knows that Kaprielian is a USC football fan.
Wait what? He pitched for the Eds. I saw who was on the Youtube announcing crew and fled to the Rangers radio broadcast, so the whole thing with Kaprielian was muted.
He grew up an every-home-game USC fan. When asked who he roots for in football season he gave obligatory UCLA answer but was clearly lying.
The Chip Kelly Era has been pretty terrible so if he has that underlying loyalty I can’t really blame him for returning to it.
saw a pic of him and his dad where doug had a USC ski cap on.
Having grown up in OC, let me tell you SC football is really really really strong.
We’ll see your 5-run first inning and raise you. Man the Rangers can be brutal to watch.
Through 2 innings:
Rangers pitchers: 68 pitches
Irvin: 17 pitches
Bob starting to think about how to get Petit into this game.
Guerra getting excited for the call that will never come.
Maybe Bob zags instead of zigs and throws Bedrosian back-to-back.
Calls up Luzardo
Rangers scored. Get Diekman stretching.
More runs, please. They can’t be in a position to use the top relievers after taking a 9-run lead.
Alonso thinks he was going to be traded for Kaprielian? We should have done that instead.
Its Texas so I mean..you never know.
Some pitcher needs to strip down for his search like Steve Lyons.
Are they going to keep doing Terry stop and frisks on these guys indefinitely? What’s the endgame here?
Their best hope is to make the prima facia We’re Serious Now case over two weeks via embarrassing searches and maybe a patsy or two to punish. Then they go to umps making some sudden spot-checks for a few more weeks, to cement the message. Then they go back to the honor system.
So it looks like Scherzer had enough and already took my advice.
Sounds like Scherzer and Girardi almost had a Dave Stewart-Pat Corrales moment.
The video of this was glorious. Girardi is a baby.
When your spin rate is 100 rpm on flat middle-middle fastballs, you DEFINITELY aren’t using any substances.
He does get a ton of movement on his slider though.
I want someone to put handkerchiefs in their pants
So Lyles is one of their regular starting pitchers, they go with an opener instead, bring in another reliever, then when they’re down 7 runs they bring in Lyles. Yes that opener strategy is quite the innovation.
Im just saying..if they forfeited right now they coukd save 6.2 innings of pitching
“I might have to retire the mic. Ain’t no good content here.” -Kiner-Falefa, as Ramon’s ball flew out.
Just going to have to take Buck’s word for it that Chris Woodward is a good manager.
I’m trying to picture what Dallas Truck World looks like. I bet it’s the size of Alameda.
So it looks like YouTube has an insistence of at least 3 pitches of PxP every half inning. After that you can talk about whatever..
As long as we don’t miss the YouTube Creator Spotlight (“two channels focused on MLB and Madden,” “LIVE streams of gameplay and pack openings”)
hey, but we got the alert when the over was met!
I will say, in YT’s defense, that they showed RICKEY videos instead of commercials sometimes.
So whats with Marcus being on that poll, did they forget he doesnt play for the A’s anymore?
heh
Mark, what the hell was that.
Did I miss Emerson going out early in the inning? Because he sure as shit didnt go calm everyone down during that shit storm.
was anyone on the radio to hear ray tell us michael young was traded from toronto for esteban loiza? Then ray said “where is he now?” and gave the ray giggle.
Loaiza received a 3-year sentence; looks like his release is scheduled for August 8. Say, Ray, did you ever piss Loaiza off?
you should tune into the rays game franco is due up second to try to walk off the red sox
due up third
have to settle for a HR and a double in his first game. no walk off
Mark, again, what the hell was that.
Canha not cover myself in glory?
Ugh, and DieBBman comes in.
And now Lou will be in for the 9th!! What a cluster.
9=0 lead and jake diekman?
Is that lead big enough for him?
Forget it Jake, its Arlington.
They show how Gallo’s weakness is the slider low and away, exactly the pitch Diekman normally likes to throw, so naturally he throws him fastballs down the middle instead.
PxP announcer just said Jake is “dealing”. Uh..hes got 1 out on 19 pitches…
looked safe
Lou for the 4 out save.
WE WERE UP 9-0!
Wait till Bob brings in Bassitt to try to get the final out.
So who is the target audience for these youtube broadcasts?
Kids who aren’t really into baseball but love Buck Showalter?
In other news, Luzardo did not give up a home run in 3 innings tonight. Puk followed and immediately did.
Another one for Puk.
Wendelken chipped in for one too.
Stange MLM pitch for artificial turf here in the 9th.
If you vote for the YouTube player of the game please keep it to yourself.
Pinder is FKing pathetic against righties.
We dont need the 4 lut save. Petit can wrap it up…
The last time Guerra pitched in a game the A’s won was April 24, Game #13 of the winning streak.
Not saying they’ve won this one yet…
With his three-hit barrage, Andrus is up to a 57 wRC+. Still worst in the AL among qualifiers, but only third worst in the majors (Kevin Newman 41, Jackie Bradley Jr. 46).
Scioscia has Griffin Canning in left and Taylor Ward behind the plate in extras, as a result of not having a DH today.
Well, also because Suzuki got hurt after Stassi pinch hit for the pitcher (striking out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th).
Canning led off the twelfth with an out, Angels got a run to tie it anyway, Giants successfully challenged the winning run, then Dylan Bundy pinch hit for Tony Watson and struck out on three pitches to end the inning. On to the 13th…
Alex Claudio replaces Bundy and Scioscia intentionally walks Posey. Claudio proceeds to unintentionally walk the next two batters to give the Giants the lead. Scioscia is having quite a Scioscia day today.
Seven-run inning. Eat it, Scioscia.
that was glorious.
In the past week+ ohtani has pitched 11 innings giving up 1 run and has hit 6 home runs, and they are what? 2 and 6
but for the grace of god go I. I can see the A’s getting into that situation with the day to daying of various maladies.
Except Bob would rather chew glass than risk using his backup catcher.
Hopefully jordan weems can pull it together
Half the people in those behind-the-plate suites aren’t even facing the field at any given time. It infuriates me.
Trade deadline can’t come soon enough. Moreland and Brown need to be replaced.
Maybe padres need a moreland?
Dont we have a bunch of AAAA OF’s on the 40? Cant we trade out Brown and Bolt for a couple of weeks so I can miss them?
Barrera and Deichmann are the other OFs on the 40. Barrera isn’t even hitting at LV. Deichmann is also unlikely to be an upgrade.
The best hitter there after Bolt has been RHH 1B Frank Schwindel. Not considered a real prospect, and it’s hard to know if the stats from there mean anything at all, but he is putting up the requisite crazy power numbers while not striking out much, so maybe that is worth something.
Mike? foltynewicz? are we sure its not anther Foltynewicz?
Still flummoxed at the A’s making this Orioles team look competent.
We did face their only good pitcher twice.
I’m flummoxed at them making this Rangers team look competent.
I was about to say that too.
I wonder how many times Heim faced Kaprilian last year
This SP they’re facing came into today’s game with an almost Luzardo like HR rate.
Down 2-0 thanks to some really awful two strike pitches.
Any A’s runs please.
Thank you
And poof we wake up.
Remind me next time that I just have to go start making dinner.
Tony Kemp is our David Fletcher, isn’t he.
no, david fletcher is concentrated eric aybar alberto callaspo johnny giovetella macier Izturus
just pure evil.
poor spencer patton. those balls were not well struck
Petit is rusty.
If nothing else Petit packed a lot of action into an 8-pitch inning.
I really hope this doesn’t mean anything but Petit has given up 3 home runs in his last 5 outings, and 4 of those outings weren’t great. He has 1(!) K this month (almost 11 IP).
Damn, a couple of nice catches there.
It feels like for the past week we have been about 14 inches away from winning all but 1 game.
teASSe
An appropriate way to end the day. I drove up to Oregon today for a mini-vacation, the first morning of which tomorrow will be spent at the local Safelite Auto Glass.
Break-in, or roadway rock? Hopefully not this.
Not that, but it was weird and a little too close to fatal. Fun driving story of the day:
Two-lane highway, 55 mph. I had to pee, so per usual procedure I spotted a side road into the forest on the left up ahead. There was a truck hauling some heavy equipment behind me but by a good 1/4 mile. A couple cars unexpectedly came around a curve from the other direction, so I had to wait for them.
So I’m at a near full stop in this highway with my turn signal on well in advance. The truck driver had to have been texting or doing something like that. All of a sudden I hear screeching brakes and see the trucker fishtailing right behind me. He goes flying by on the shoulder to my right in a cloud of dust. No contact but holy crap.
I’m breathing, the car wasn’t hit and the need to pee was abated for the moment so I started back up behind the trucker who resumed speed and proceeded. After a short time I look in the rearview mirror and notice that I can’t see through the rear window. When I stop for a look, apparently the compressed air ahead of the braking truck had shattered the rear window (without actually making it fall apart).
I had about 200 miles to go to my destination and there was nothing undriveable about the car, so oh well. The window held together for maybe 125 miles, but then I was on I-5 and got in the draft between a couple more big trucks, and that’s when the window started to crumble.
Regardless of whose fault that would have been, the dumb thing I did was putting myself in a position where I’m at a full stop on a high-speed highway.
whoa. Glad you’re ok.
I think my need to pee would have been less “abated,” and more “already satisfied,” after that.
Thank goodness you survived to post this harrowing tale.
Oh man, that sounds terrifying. Glad you emerged intact.
oh my
Two games out on June 23 is something that I take in March, but man it’s hard to take seeing it happen this way
14-6 in June. They’re better than fine.
yes and the third best record in MLB.
I got to play softball tonight for the first time in 15 months and it was fucking great. 4-4 plus a walk, two doubles, four runs scored, three RBI. Since you asked.
Walking in softball sounds like an unwritten rules violation.
Not really, when the alternative is swinging at bad pitches for easy outs.
My (non-competitive, beer league) softball philosophy was that I would “swing” at a 3-0 bad pitch but take at 3-1.
RIP to the away goals rule. I, for one, will miss you.
Back to the Tuesday formula of blowing an early lead apparently.
The rare no walks, no homers big inning.
God Glen is doing everything but walking under a ladder talking about how consistently good the Hound has been.
Can’t jinx a guy from three states away. That’s just science.
We really needed an alternate spelling of “Colby”?
Garcia apparently mesmerized by whatever the people behind the plate are eating after he stabbed at that ball.
Garcia – couldn’t block an easily blockable pitch in the dirt, runner gets to third, and he almost throws it away into left field.
I would love to hear the blunt Grady Fuson answer on just how bad they think Allen is behind the plate to justify this situation.
True 0 tool player.
Hopefully just too many breakfast tacos for Canha.
@bigleaguepoopie?
Left hip strain.
MRI tomorrow.
perfect
Same hip he had surgery on in 2016.
Canha further cementing his team-leading East Bay credibility.
It’s hip to be squared.
If only we had asked for the other A…is García.
Jed!
As if one year of Profar wasn’t annoying enough, Eli White looks like he’s going to annoy us for a while.
Was literally about to say how annoyed I am with him. Just constantly garbage things that work.
Related-again 2 inches here, 3 there and this is a nothing inning.
Why am I ok with the Rangers old jerseys, but hate how boring these are? The only difference is the angle of the name I think.
They still should wear the powder blue way more..
Bassitt has been shaky but I would definitely let him start the 7th and go batter to batter.
Nice backstop you built there, idiots.
Kemp:
.292/.408/.467
28 walks, 25 strikeouts
And some nifty defense.
And, uh, that catch just now.
If Kemp and Andrus (sOPS+ of 107 in June) can hit, this team looks very different all of a sudden.
And it changes what the deadline looks like too. If we only have to pick up bullpen pieces and maybe an OF vs filling a huge MI hole as well.
So I just read this thread before checking in on the game. I was absolutely stunned that we were up 4 in the 9th inning. I thought we were getting blown out.
Also, everyone who had Bassett as our ace back in his prospect days, please stand up. Put all of your fingers on each hand up.
One of the writers asked Bassitt why his slider was registering a few MPH faster than it had before, and he answered that it’s a new pitch he started throwing today, instead of his cutter.
Ugh.
This is going to challenge Bob’s commitment to never letting Machin play, esp under dumb NL rules. Bob’s good, though. Grab some pine, Machin.
So that leaves Kemp as the everyday LF, Brown/Pinder platoon in RF, and Bolt and Garcia as the extra RHH options if you don’t want Moreland starting against a lefty.
Marlins match up pretty well with us for a trade. I think there’s a package to be made where we can get Starling Marte and cheap relievers like Yimi Garcia/Adam Cimber.
Marte is making 12,500,000 million though, so even with the prorated amount of that, this comes with usual caveat that it all depends on how much Fisher wants to spend.
$6.25M as of tomorrow
Rosenthal had a blurb today saying that Story is unlikely for the A’s as 6 million at the deadline is probably too much for Fisher to take on. Probably something we all already knew but tried to ignore. It does make the likelihood of an impactful rental seem less and less likely as Marte, Cruz, and Story all seem out of the budget range.
Maybe Garrett Cooper (1.6 million this year)/Yimi Garcia from the Marlins?
the roster hole and the other marlins deal today is making me think they were at least trying.
I know story would be a good “fit” but that means also eating andrus money in some way, so I never saw that as a possibility, although I do have at least hope allen will progress like he has since the olympic trials.
ohtani and rendon with solo hrs in st pete in the first.
3-2 rays bottom 2
impressed they knew who he was
Impressed they knew Giants history as far back as ’89
angels of course get fletcher run
My god the Angels are terrible.
and lucky
I really like the positive reinforcement for Ohtani’s bun
t.
bunt
