Wait, um, actually of you can.
Angels in town for four. Bassitt v Sandoval, Manaea v Phtani, Montas v Cobb, Irvin v Quintana.

You can take the boy out of Orange County…
gross
Kinda cool the way Bassitt has become masterful.
All the typos are a fitting tribute.
That look on Chapman’s face after the K says it all.
You can see the anguish on Chapmen’s face while he’s in the act of flailing at strike three.
Ray seems especially babbly tonight.
His steady slip may be accelerating. You can hear him think through these aimless tangents. Seems like they’ve stepped up Dallas’s air time too.
Yikes, now free riffing off the African-American Heritage promo, Ray’s entering rough seas.
Lucky for the producers neither of these teams can sustain a turn at bat more than five minutes.
I spent so much time trying to get the new phone set up that I blew right through game time without noticing. Evidently I didn’t miss much. I should just go up to the local high school and ask to borrow a kid for an hour; it would save a lot of time and pathetic befuddlement.
Just be careful how you phrase it.
Yes, that might raise an eyebrow. This new phone marks the official retirement of the battery-operated SiriusXM device which I have used to listen to the A’s on the beach since I’ve lived here. It had become redundant (I do still have SiriusXM in the car, and that subscription includes streaming which provides more choices than the direct-from-satellite device anyway). Will have to figure out this summer whether I need unlimited data or if GoogleFi’s metered plan will still be cheaper; I suspect unlimited data is not far around the corner.
Heh, Canha. I’ve been sitting out there in the outfield, and there’s that 3-minute period in the evening when the sky is the exact same color as the baseball.
Well that was ugly.
Man, Scioscia, you need to light a fire under these guys.
And Elvis is north of the Mendoza line.
Kemp hitting for Pinder in the 6th is an interesting choice.
Really nice to see the A’s hit and score with non homers this inning.
Damn, only hit allowed so far was a Baltimore chop that Chapman had no play on in the 2nd.
I’m even more excited about completing 8 innings with 101 pitches. We need much, much more of that.
The Hound! Great stuff.
A complete game shutout that’s not a no-hitter. Yes, they do still exist!
likely more rare
Very close, actually, and it was true until Bassitt’s performance tonight. I went through all 23 complete games that have been thrown in MLB this year.
6: no-hitters
6: 9-inning shutouts
2: 9 innings but not shutouts
1: An 8-inning complete game loss in a 9-inning game (Trevor Bauer)
6: 7-inning complete games in doubleheaders
2: 6-inning complete game losses in doubleheaders
gudduan is injured?
Weems I gone after Luzardo’s next appearance?
Kawahara’s Twitter said Guduan has a “right groin strain”, which wasn’t evident in the game the other night and sounds a bit like something invented to delay the inevitable DFA for the out-of-options guy.
yesterday twitter reported the angels were at 85% plus 2 weeks. That’s why the coaches were unmasked.
Makes me mad that the A’s aren’t
I’m in Sec 107 where it is more crowded than previous games, but fine. Largely masked crowd, possibly because it’s 50% Japanese Ohtani fans
It’s tough to play Guess The Attendance but it looks like it might approach Opening Night, which was their largest crowd (10,436) and certainly better than #2 (8,131 vs. the Dodgers).
I asked a beer vendor, that’s also what he thinks.
Also really not liking the extended netting.
Elaborating on this. The netting now extends from bullpen to bullpen with a top edge maybe 25-30′ high (measured from the first row). In practice this means, I think, you watch 100% of the action through the netting if seated in rows 1-20, below the concourse. Except maybe when in 101-103 and 229-232 by the foul poles. I did not care for it at all. Specifically at the moment of pitch/swing, just too much clutter in the depth of field when you want precise acuity the most. And maybe especially while the sun is still up.
Honestly, that issue with the netting always bothered me with the FRSs, one reason I didn’t buy more of those.
Ok, I am watching, Its a free game i already chalked it up as a loss
walking fletcher might make me turn it off
and bob, lets get to 85%
DidSuzuki accelerate that? Or was it Cunha being aggro?
all suzuki. Ohtani understood, tapped his chest like “my bad” Cahna was done after he said his peace
Typical MAGA, escalating into a fight
I figured there was a “Berkeley snowflake” in there somewhere.
hate to say it, but need to get him over 75 pitches through 5
68
Elvis saving us from the no no.
It looked like Canha got into Ohtani’s head just enough that it paid off in the 6th inning. Canha more successful than Torii Hunter vs. Sonny in the playoffs a few years back.
Fletcher
there was no reason for Manaea to face fletcher
Well the way the bullpen is constructed the starters have to throw 7 innings once in a while. Bob got two of those in a row and was reasonably going for #3.
I’m convinced it wouldn’t have mattered even if Bob brought in Eckersley.
luckily scioscia trusts his bullpen less than bob
damn. oh well, good inning
Astros tie it back up in the 10th
never in doubt
Louuuuu
Nice win.
I give that game a 9/10, falling short only because of one at-bat by David Fletcher.
They’re 4-1 against these Trout-less slegnA (just realized the other A’s killer, Iglesias, went on the DL). They have 5 more games against this version of them by mid June. In between, the A’s face the M’s, Rockies, Dbacks, and Royals.
Meanwhile the Astros have the Padres, Red Sox (x6), Blue Jays, and Twins, and just lost Brantley/Castro and maybe Alvarez to injuries.
I mean you couldn’t draw it up better than that to create some separation. Hopefully we’re not disappointed at day’s end June 16th.
12-5 after this date, but unfortunately the * have been hot so no separation has occurred.
Don’t know what to make of Ohtani.More balls than strikes, swing and miss stuff, super wild.
Seemed to sit 92-94 today, Touched 98.
just weird.
Another day without Ramon :(
And days off for Lowrie and Murphy as well.
Glen is wrong there were four banana guys there last night also.
Wow, great catch by Canha in CF.
Guys are laying out today, if Pinder had caught that ball in the corner they’d put a Superman cape on his jersey.
Why does it feel like full counts never work out for us.
Boring all-English champions league final was boring. Go A’s.
From 3-0 to that? FKing hell
Smart baserunning, dumbshit
CATCH THE BALL
Again, does Garcia bring anything to the plate, defensively or offensively?
Just fucking awful. Zero rapport with the pitchers, frequently confused on signs, and literally cannot catch the ball. Cut him now.
We never worked out some Three Musketeers gag to use for him either.
what the actual fuck was that fletcher?
Was Austin Allen really that bad?
I don’t care for this inning at all.
Blister discussion, Dallas makes oblique reference to guys who pee on their hands to toughen up the skin.
Not sure of the stats, but Alex Cobb feels like a scheduled loss for the A’s.
Mid-inning pitching change to bring in Romo while down 4 runs. Bob must not want anyone to watch the end of the game.
way ahead of him
I was watching this evening, and gave up after the 5th, pretty sure I could jump to the final score without missing anything.
As lenscrafters, FSU and GM state above, there are .175-hitting backup catchers galore. If you’re one of those you’d dang well better be great defensively. Because if you’re not great defensively you need to be replaced right now.
Settling things on the field indeed. Don’t see many fights break out while the ball is still in play.
you can see the exact moment the pitcher realizes the play is off.
Tatis hit an astonishingly long three-run homer with two outs in the ninth to tie the game in Houston. In extras again now.
going tothe 12, Astros bringing in a pitvher for his debut
The Padres catcher clanked a catchable pitch to allow the tying run to score in the eleventh with two outs.
The kid coughed up a three-run shot to Wil Myers.
that is an out in 29 ball parks
Another dumb ass Enron Field thing as Profar’s booming hit gets “stuck” in between the outfield fence and some kind of screen. Hate this park.
Astros 1Bman dropped an easyish pop up earlier in the count.
that was tough to see. Like the pirates rundown thing
Fell right on his tuchis. Pretty rough.
Ann Killion column trashing the Howard Terminal project includes the following sentence:
This is what really gets to me:
Spot on.
She makes many good points, the Coliseum site potential, urban parks that didn’t succeed. But she broadly frames HT vs a vibrant port economy as an either/or choice which is just wrong, or at least ill-argued.
The Coliseum site advocates are right about everything except the only question being asked right now. Certify an EIR and enter negotiations for a Howard Terminal deal, or not.
I was annoyed by the column, despite agreeing with some of it (Fisher and Kaval are being jerks, Coliseum site is viable for baseball).
The way she tries to give herself moral authority as a defender of Oakland’s interests because her mother is from there is ham-handed. She should leave those kinds of takes to columnists who live in Oakland, like Marcus Thompson (whose take, incidentally, is that the project would be good for West Oakland, despite his frustration with A’s ownership).
The whole Port thing, meanwhile, is just a laundering of the idea Ostler served as a mouthpiece for, where the idea seems mainly to be that Oakland shouldn’t develop Howard Terminal because the Port may someday want to expand to that area. That strikes me as highly dubious. Maybe there’s something to it, but she’s not actually making the argument or sketching out its contours, she’s just assuming its correctness in order to set up the stark moral choice (A’s vs. Oakland!) she imagines to be present here.
If the port concept is so important you would think that..you know…the Port would be hammering away at it.
The Coliseum site is not viable for a stadium. It’s just not. That said, even if it was, I still could have imagined both the Warriors and Raiders leaving for the reasons she mentioned.
you should travel back to ’63 and let them know before it’s too late!
Maybe we could go back then and tell them to build working sewer drains.
I’m going to take this a bit further and say that it’s really fucking easy for a couple of SF based columnists (who let’s face it, may like the A’s but clearly favor the Other Team, Killion’s sob story aside) to tell actual A’s fans that it’s OK for us to lose our team because they can clearly tell us what’s best for our city. I’m sure if the shoe was on the other foot, they’d be happy to write articles about how they’re perfectly ok with losing the Giants cause they “choose” SF.
Basically, spare me the crocodile tears and concern trolling when I don’t believe for a second these columnists have the same emotional investment in both the city and team we have.
But Hank Schulman and Newballpark told me there is no bias??
Ramon still out.
Irvin had a nice first month, but it’s time to make a change.
This rotation spot is right there for Luzardo if he wants it.
Ugh.
Man, Pinder is struggling.
Error, walk, walk, walk, strikeout, sac fly is one way to do a rally.
Whole lineup is struggling.
Would be nice if Moreland stopped being this bad.
Sounds like the same is true for all of them.
There is a whole lot of sucking going on.
Can he face the A’s?
Practically a replay of yesterday: one bad inning on the pitching/defense side, and next to nothing from the offense.
Having Laureano in there instead of one of Pinder/Moreland/Piscotty would obviously make a difference, but his absence seems to loom even larger than that.
3-4 to begin the supposed easiest stretch of the season.
So in other news you can catch my friend’s kids’ band on jimmy kimmel this thursday. Pretty wild.
Wait, your friends kid is in the Linda Lindas? Did you bring that up a week-ish ago when their video was blowing up the internet?
Maybe? Dunno.
Yes, A woman I am good friends with from college is the mom of two of them. Her husband is the one that was in reel big fish and is now a producer with a studio in their home. her brother started giant robot. I know his twin better than him.
hope the CG was worth it
can’t waste an andrus double
