Glen and Dallas propagandizing
stop
Listening to Ken, Vince and Ray on the hotel balcony, as I will be for the whole road trip (when I’m not on the beach, or in one of the local watering holes). Hello!
SPI is a pleasant surprise, nowhere near the redneck resort I was expecting. It’s Tex-Mex but strong emphasis on Mexico; I suppose it’s too far from the population centers of Texas to get that Houston-Dallas influence. Quiet, well-kept, built to withstand hurricanes, nice Jimmy Buffett sort of vibe. Probably not so quiet on summer weekends, as chat with bartenders reveals, which is increasingly the VRBO/AirBNB-driven Tahoe problem as well. But, as an outside-the-box idea for the future, worth having on the list.
Ahh, so that’s where you are, I probably should have recognized it. My parents had a condo down there back in the day and we went down annually in the spring, my dad piloting us in the Cessna straight down I-35 from Mpls. The unit was in the Tiki condominiums, one of the last ones down the line. I also camped on the beach for a while and then worked at Louie’s Backyard one year during spring break – huge draw for the midwestern schools, and back then the legal drinking age in TX was 18. Made a pile of money (for us at the time) in those 2 weeks and skedaddled to MN. That’s a looooong story. Go have a drink there for me.
Louie’s Backyard looks like the most popular place in town. Maybe Sunday night for that. Camping on the beach? You can’t miss the NO OVERNIGHT CAMPING ON THE BEACH signs… maybe outside the city limits though.
Yeah, way down past any development. Not sure if it was state park or what. But I learned the lesson that if you eat a pound of sand, as long as you shit a pound of sand you’re ok. The main activity for the people hanging out there was scavenging for washed up bales of weed or other jettisoned product.
A nice Saturday morning on the beach having succumbed to South Texas thunderstorms, I have stumbled into Louie’s Backyard. The TV in the main bar isn’t working and the sports bar part doesn’t open till 5, but a couple Hopadillos and A’s-Twins on the phone via Louie’s wifi will wash away the afternoon.
Special postcard for sslinger. I presume he recognizes the water pouring in everywhere during the torrential rainstorm. Also, classic beach town, the guy in the red t-shirt just in front of where the most water is dumping down appeared to be on his 12th drink of the day at 4 p.m. :-P
Nothing like ducking into a watering hole to evade a downpour. Hadn’t thought of SPI or Louie’s Backyard in forever, cool to see that it’s still there.
The Hound has it going. Pity about those two wild pitches in the first.
i think its called wuster
Im sure Im jinxing it, but it feels like games have been brisk recently
It helps when we don’t hit.
Come on Ramon, add some win probability.
Darwinzon? I guess nothing should surprise me anymore.
Vince didn’t seem very impressed.
Darwinzon Darlosezon I guess.
A good throw beats Olson to third easily.
Fortunately that was not a good throw.
radio seems to indicate there was scouting involved
That’s what they get for playing a WR in RF.
A UNC/Oakland Raiders receiver, no less.
Elvis the hitting machine!
You can really make out the individual masshole voices with the reduced capacity.
This has been a fun/awful dynamic around the league this year. The leather lungs have figured out that at fractional capacity any one voice can be clearly heard on the broadcast.
With the important exception of the two walkoffs I’m not sure I remember a Moreland AB this year. Still think he looks like Durazo in the box though.
Uh oh. Is this the night the DieBBman time bomb finally explodes?
Defused in the nick of time!
I for one never doubted him
Diekman has two pitches, and pretty much one location (sweeping across the plate to lower glove side corner) that he aims for like 80% of the time.
When he can hit that spot, or be close enough to get a chase, he is damn near unhittable.
When he misses too far out he is DieBBman.
When he leaves something too far over the plate it is even worse.
But even “good” Diekman is not that fun to watch. Just him trying to hit that same corner over and over again.
Glen just invoked Brian Fuentes. If I leave now I should be able to get to him before he leaves the Coliseum.
Excellent win
Nice win! One-run low score victory at Fenway not easy to do.
Brian Fuentes is a hero.
Pinder HR. Playing RF tonight.
Puk 1 IP, 2 H, 3 K.
And 0 INJ? We’ll take it.
Speaking of which
I’m excited to watch my first A’s game of the year later today with our friend formerly known as “Emperor Nobody”. Baseball’s not a very big part of my life anymore, but I’m still planning to go to a good handful of Eugene Emeralds games once they start selling single-game tickets (right now, only season ticket holders can attend due to Lane County being in a bad space, COVID-wise.)
yay!
cool, tell him hello
Ditto, very nice to hear from/about both of you.
Agree with both of the above. Hope you are doing well and hopefully you get to watch a good game today.
Eugene! The part of my life where living in a major university town had a lot of appeal has come and gone, but Eugene is one of the best and was on the short list 15 or 20 years ago. Uncle Phil built a nice ballpark for the Ducks and the Ems; the Giants were up I-5 in Salem for many years, so they got a nice upgrade with the minor league realignment.
I’m excited to go to some Emeralds games, for sure. My plan here is to either run the local trans organization (I’ve got my THIRD interview coming up, so fingers crossed!) or work with CAHOOTS, or do homeless case management for Lane County. Also, I want to help lobby to at least symbolically (at state level) legalize psilocybin for therapeutic purposes.
that was quite an inning
Ramon finally gets the ejection he’s been looking for.
That was dumb but Bob should’ve gotten in there before the ejection.
Yes, he was very slow out of the gate. It was a terrible call and he should have taken the ejection if there needed to be one.
Sh!tty umpiring. It’s time to take ball/strike calls out of human hands.
Kap’s secondary pitches look pretty good to me. It’s too bad he can’t throw mid to upper 90s anymore but he should still be a decent starter.
It looks to me like he might wind up with huge platoon splits, might be better suited for the bullpen.
Elvis heating up!
Causing all sorts of havoc out there.
The Elvis comeback special!
Do our pitchers just never practice the throw to 2B?
that was unfortunate, but it’s his first start. gotta be nerves
That specific play is hard, every pitcher flinches a little on comebackers because you can’t instantly tell how hard they’re hit. Guys with cool heads settle themselves, then throw to the bag not the fielder, but for a lot of other guys the adrenaline is off the charts.
The other thing they pointed out on the broadcast is that from where he fielded it he was throwing uphill on the mound, which has to be awkward.
Especially a guy who is like “Im finally here, and it’s Fenway, etc”
As a player I always found it much more difficult to make an accurate throw on a fielded ball as a pitcher than as an infielder. You have to switch to a different type of throw, which is awkward.
our pitchers in high school were taught? required? encouraged? to take a knee as they threw to first on comebackers
We were taught to always assume one out on a comebacker. Take all the time you need (adjust for throwing upslope, different arm slot, etc) to make a good throw to get that first out and the rest is gravy. The trouble comes when you assume two, rush the throw, and end up with nothing if the throw goes into the outfield. But you always have to get one.
This ump is amazingly bad.
That “strike” to JDM turned a for sure bases loaded no out situation into a fine outing.
Kaprilian is at the same time lucky and unlucky in the sequencing of his swings and misses and balls in play
Hell yeah dad. That was great.
I cheated. looked at gameday which is ahead of the at bat audio, but, I still got confused when KK didn’t quit understand what happened
Kap missing 2 years gives me the slightest glimmer of hope for A.J. Harden.
I’m ordering a Burch Smith jersey.
Also excellent chance of recycling aptly when some a different guy named Smith wears #46 ten years from now. They’ll still be playing in the Coliseum but Commissioner Jeter will promise to look into it.
I think if I actually did that even this year, people would assume my name is Smith.
Why is Burch in this early? Is this a DH and I forgot?
Can’t believe this guy is taking my alias
lol
Ive always been disappointed that Bazardo was not used as a villain in a Superman film.
Ok not sure why that happened but I’ll take it.
exactly what i was hoping for
Just like we drew it up
That’s a good lookin ballclub in the road grays.
i’m not crying
All in all, with the family history and his long battles back from injuries, it is a great and heartwarming story. And in his post-game interview he said something about the Sonny Gray trade along the lines of “… and I want to make sure the A’s won that trade.” I’m sold.
Twins go into this weekend’s series a full 10 games out of first place in the central.
maybe they will sell a reliever or 2
Everyone in my household has had at least 1 vaccination shot. by mid june the commissioner will authorize relaxed restrictions
Vaccination definitely makes me feel better, and my Coliseum visit last week felt very safe. There is LOTS of extra room in the third deck.
I am concerned, though, that non-vaxxed dickheads will take the new CDC mask guidance as an opportunity to spew their potentially infectious breath around.
yes. its happening already
It’s important to repeatedly ALMOST beat this thing, then give it a fighting chance to come roaring back.
its the sporting thing to do
let’s score 10
Might need to.
More
10 sounds woefully short. I’m not really planning on hanging around to find out how short.
hmm. Thinking Manaea may not have his best stuff
just a feeling
It was Manaea’s 4th career start in Fenway and 3 of them have been cover-your-eyes bad.
2016-05-10: 2.2 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 2 HR. (He was economical, however, doing all that on 41 pitches.)
2017-09-12: 3.2 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 1 HR.
2018-05-14: 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR. (A few weeks after the no-hitter.)
2021-05-13: 2+ IP, 10 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 2 HR. (47 pitches this time.)
Emerson didn’t change his watch when they got to the east coast
First time I’ve appreciated the mid-inning beer ad. Reminds me that I could just get drunk.
I’ll have a Guerra and Tonic and the lady would like a Guduan and Coke, please.
Worst hangover I ever had was the morning after many rounds of Koloreks.
You’ll both get a Manaea on the Rocks.
This is not getting any better. I would like to see the manager.
Remain of the belief that Guerra is good.
yes, now score 10
FK you bronson arroyo. (I think that’s who’s pitching.)
Pretty sure that’s Thomas Hayden Church
I heard Rocco Baldelli was a manager now, and I shit myself. I’m so sad, and old.
Hopefully all the bad play will be concentrated in this game
They are checking all the boxes on this one.
(checks Gameday) I gather Machin is being held back to pitch in case Guduan can’t get 6 outs.
Guduan has his rawlings glove relaced with green thread. Guerra still has red laces in his glove. Also rawlings.
flipping through twitter, how about a stadium instead 980?
Way back in the 00s stadium wars there was a guy, Brian somebody, who was gung ho / obsessed with the idea of decking 980 and building a ballpark over it. One of those ideas which is great if an omnipotent being can will it into existence, but otherwise utterly impossible, a waste of time to discuss. A small part of me back then thought he was a Lew Wolff plant waging distract and divert ops.
Oh yeah, I remember that.
Found a link:
Bryan Grunwald
There still has to be a substantial surface-level connector between 880 and the 580/24 interchange, particularly since 580 through most of Oakland is a no-trucks freeway; trucks must take 880 and then need some way to connect to 24. I doubt that leaves room for a stadium, unless the connector boulevard were routed around it (taking out some existing housing in the process). South Lake Tahoe has been having a similar, contentious debate for
yearsdecades regarding the construction of the “Loop Road” (re-route of US 50 around the back of the casinos).Nick Allen really heating up. 3 straight 3 hit games.
I won’t be around this weekend to get my Preak on with you folks. But at a glance I am intrigued by Risk Taking at 15-1.
this is embarrassing
Cahna get a day off?
I like how the picture cuts the lineup off after Murph. Might be asking Chapman to cover a lot of ground though…
elvis is on pace for more that 55o PAs this year, even batting 9th.
Yessss
Every time I think I understand how evil the NFL is something makes me realize I’m not even close to understanding it.
Just learned we have an Elvis starting at shortstop for the Lansing Lugnuts. The pipeline of Elvis shortstops is flowing.
Oh great, umps in camo hats.
