The name “Dunedin” comes from Dùn Èideann, the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.
The A’s lineup beats Tampa’s in Scot ancestry (I speculate) so that means we sweep.
OK, that was unlikely and impressive, but it was not very “athletic.”
god bless rich hill
Dallas likes the good-fielding pitchers like Ray likes the good catching-catchers
national league baseball is so stupid.
Per Mike Selleck, early May has historically been a good time for some A’s pitchers.
interesting
This is the apparently-nonexistent Game 34 though.
dammit
hope canha can start a 2 out rally
Hey, Kemp has the 2nd-best OBP on the team.
Semi successful El Vez AB. 3 pitches and only 1 out. Admittedly it is tough to make 2 outs when leading off.
Pitchers look weird in jersey numbers below 20.
I wear #14 and pitch for my softball team so I know.
I wasn’t kidding btw, when heard from the stands Like a Virgin really works as a walkup song.
click
Not getting a cheap walk from Bill Miller tonight.
Made Wiley
One of the first 3 guys up needs to hit a home run.
gak
That works too.
Jed Lowrie is a witch.
madden should not have pitched to brown
El Vez with a hit
Dogs and cats living together!
Not making an out just didn’t feel right.
wasn’t terrible at least
A sudden explosion of strategery.
Aw.
I’ve seen a fair number of no-hitters carried into the 8th. That’s why Bumgarner’s doesn’t count.
Maybe getting one run doesn’t mean that making a bunch of dumb outs on the bases is a good idea.
81 pitches, 2 hits, time to turn it over to our lights-out bullpen.
Seriously wtf??? Did we not learn anything from yesterday.
And of course this means Meadows PHs. FKing hell.
Those two hits might’ve been the only two pitch locations Manaea missed all night. Just pinpoint sharp tonight.
Canha’s gonna hit something like 22 home runs with 39 RBI and 100+ runs scored this year.
He now has 9 HBP and 9 RBI this year.
I like fiery Ramon but lets not get tossed, ok?
He also has no case.
Kemp also went nuts over a correct strike call recently. And it’s not like they lack bad calls to complain about.
Fairbanks has quite the serial killer face coming off the mound.
Also a really positive scouting report on him (less so on Puason).
This is what I was wondering about in the spring.
If the bat is as precocious as it appears to be, it’s going to be tough to be as patient with his development as will be required to give him a chance at being a big league catcher. The Bryce Harper route may beckon.
I assume they will try to keep him at catcher while promoting him as aggressively as his bat demands, and then see how things look when he is closer to the majors.
Wil Myers is a good comp, KC kept him as a C until he reached AA which may be where Soderstrom will top out as a C too. It’s really hard to find a bat first catching prospect out of high school that somehow overcame the defensive questions (and the need to not hold back the hitting potential) to make the majors as a catcher.
15 years ago, the A’s also had a similar uber hitting, poor catching prospect that they moved off of the position.
No way that was fifteen years ago.
Soderstrom to SS!
Not a lot of sink on the sinker, according to Gameday
SETH!
Bat of Renown!!!
Bat of Fucking Renown!!!
Brown might be new favorite player cause that’s twice today he saved us from 8, 9.
is there a reason kemp gets starts v lefties and not him?
Very SSS but Kemp did have a .423 OBP vs. LHP coming into tonight.
They love the PH option for Piscotty.
I was actually going to complain about that. PH for Piscotty but letting El Vez just sit there wasting space. But it sure seemed to work tonight.
Well, good, because the way the teams were hitting I thought even the placed runner might not prevent a 16-inning game.
That was cool.
ken really undersold it. I was in suspense. watching the replay it looked much more impressive
I guess Kaprielian is next man up.
What about Jefferies – wasn’t it down to the wire with him and Irvin in ST?
Injured :(
Sagh
Burch is back, Fiers to the IL.
That hit and run, squeeze attempt, stolen base attempt sequence last night felt like a cry for help from Melvin. You give me these two guys at the bottom of my lineup and it’s gonna have to get weird, nerds.
Well, the hit-and-run worked, and the squeeze attempt seems reasonable enough too. Kemp should be able to do that. The frustrating part of the SB attempt was that Kemp is not a big GIDP threat, so they likely would have had another shot at the run with Canha up. And though the play was close, Elvis is not as good a base stealer as he seems to think he is.
On a related note: when Pinder comes back, do we think he’ll become the starting SS, or is the team still telling themselves that Elvis’ glove is somehow worth it?
All the moves were justifiable given the resources at hand. Even the SB would have worked if Cash hadn’t sniffed it out. But it is just…unusual for this organization’s teams to get cute like that.
Maybe should have skipped a pitch after going on the foul ball. 0-2 to kemp is pa perfect time to give up a ball. (and 1-2)
but yeah, given the resources it was all the best calls with caveat about the 0-2 to kemp
I say andrus is ss 3-4 times a week still
I agree that it was a very bad time to attempt a steal, but he was caught on a pitchout, and there is some possibility Andrus or the coaching staff thought it would be 90%+ against that pitcher.
Hmm…
very nice
caught a pop up and struck out on three pitches
Who’s going to sign up for milb tv to scout Holmes tonight? Kaprielian’s next scheduled start is Tuesday and I very much hope it won’t be at Fenway.
With our off-day, Fiers’ turn is not until Wednesday, but we could also keep the other starters on regular rest and push a Kaprielian (or Holmes) start until Friday or Saturday in Minnesota. (Buxton just went on the DL, BTW)
Buxton seems like the Rich Harden of Minnesota.
Welp
Kemp/Machin MI against Glasnow today.
Except for Allen in for Garcia, this is pretty much the same white flag lineup that produced 0 runs against Glasnow the last time (Murphy and Lowrie out at the same time has that effect).
Starting out better this time.
Today’s unsolicited theory of the cosmos comes from someone who titles himself “Superscientist cum General Scientist” and says that top cosmologists now agree with his theory that Universe has 4 regions (North, South, East & West) where the laws of physics differ. In particular, in the Eastern region the proton, neutron, and electron are replaced by triangular motion.
Good to know.
Did you see where the New Yorker mentioned off-handedly that faster than light travel is possible?
scientist have know for some time…
I didn’t – link?
from this article
I can only hope that they were misunderstanding tachyons.
To be fair, they are harder to follow when wearing their masks.
Yes tachyons, those particles that really do exist
Sure, but at least they’re legitimately faster than light. And it’s cool that they can never be slower than light for the same 1/(1-v^2/c^2) reason.
was it ever a thing that light was significantly slowed down?
Depends on what you mean by the question …
The speed of light depends on the medium its moving through, with the maximum speed being in a vacuum, so you can slow it down by changing the medium. The speed of light in diamond is half that in a vacuum, for instance.
There were some also suggestions that the speed of light in a vacuum might have changed over the lifetime of the universe, but the evidence is sketchy at best.
the first.
wasn’t there a thing when they slowed it down to ~40mph with some ~0K sludge? maybe it was bunk now debunked. i don’t pretend to keep up.
just imagining ways that the NYer sentence as it is written could be true and factual. where you don’t travel faster than C, rather get light to slow down to freeway speeds.
in theory.
Just because something is a solution to some QFT equations doesn’t mean that it exists.
mookie betts getting tagged in the balls was funny
Fair, but it’s better than being forbidden by the equations.
Read that article this morning and it made me even less convinced* about the existence of UFOs.
* Caveat: requires it to be possible for level of convincing to drop below zero.
You’re going to feel awfully silly when one of your experiments turns up big glowing triangular objects accelerating instantaneously to supersonic speeds.
north?
Sounds consistent with the time cube theory.
We should have a pool for time and location the Chinese rocket booster hits earth. My pick is 0400 UT Sun 9 May, at Mar a Lago
I’m liking these odds!
Yay
i cannot wait
Seth!
Great AB from Canha to set him up.
Seth Brown and his Weekend of Renown
Radio booth got food from Alamar, presumably because Nelson has more time on his hands now.
Vince notes he was the only California entrant on “Top Shelf” this season.
TV guys are talking it up now too.
Sweet throw. That looked ugly for Kiermeier.
Double A beep beep a H R.
Allen barbecued that ball. Pretty good inning for him.
Calling bullshit on this one. There is no way a low laser beam like that lost 23 feet to wind.
I live close to the coliseum and there is a very strong wind outside right now.
Good thing they jumped on Glasgow before he figured out what he was doing today. He looks unhittable now.
Andrus is pinch hitting. ANDRUS IS PINCH HITTING.
Yeah, that can’t be the right move.
I don’t see why you wouldn’t get Lowrie an AB with a runner in scoring position. Or Piscotty. It makes little sense.
On the plus side, Lowrie can hit for Kemp next inning.
When Elvis is pinch-hitting for someone your roster may have some flaws.
Thank God we had a chance to get El Vez in the game. Was getting worried for a second.
Pretty harsh message to the front office about Machin.
While the message to Machin from the front office is apparently “yes, your roster spot is safe, now please release my children unharmed”
More renown.
Seth!
I don’t know how good this Rays team is but they sure are annoying to play against.
Lou for the 4 out save..
This is fine.
Four out save for Lou?
Need more than a one run lead
Good, some insurance
Asking a lot of our three playable relievers.
Kemp xbh!!
Strickland to be released after allowing a double to Kemp.
This has to be an automatic IBB to Murphy.
Rays to be contracted after allowing doubles to Kemp and El Vez.
Gameday is broken … Andrus is at bat and it’s saying “In play, run(s)”.
Sometimes talking dirty can be confusing, too.
Kemp and Andrus doubles in same inning is hitting a royal flush against four of a kind type odds.
Andrus just secured his roster spot for the rest of 2021. Veteran rounding into shape, cant wait to hear that…
Oh good. Kolarek is up.
Lou you’re not helping me manage my rage problem
Burch glad you had that 1 inning of rehab..you’re the closer.
Never a doubt.
So Lou was just getting angry..right?
Never in doubt!
I’m not saying boo, I’m saying Lou.
Nice to win the season series agaibst the Rays, especially getting a bit unlucky by facing Glasnow 2/7.
For those of you with a certain musical bent, Billy & the Kids are doing 3 nights from Kauai for Kreutzman’s 75th birthday celebration with guests Billy Strings and James Casey (Trey band), with Carlos Santana expected to join either tonight or maybe just Sunday. For the Phish phans, Back on the Train was a first set highlight. On FANS. Last night was a solid first night, should get better as they play more, and the word is tonight will be the debut of a Hunter song.
Watching first game at new Rangers park with fans. Not pleasant looking at a bunch of rich metroplexers stuffing their faces instead of a backstop.
Keeping an eye on this guy.
Shohei Tomioka, the former college pitcher who the A’s somehow discovered after he went undrafted in Japan, pitched three scoreless innings of relief. He hasn’t given up a run in his first five professional innings for the Lugnuts.
Khris Davis sighting. Pinch hit single.
Can we put WAR back on the scoreboard, Khris?!?
Semien with a three-run Crawford Box special to break it open. Meanwhile, Khris scores the go ahead run against Seattle.
Mariners catcher just received a throw home with runners on second and third in a one run game and just didn’t tag the guy, thinking it was a force play and he’d turn two. Yikes.
Game ends on Kyle Lewis getting thrown out at the plate on what would have been the tying run. So that play was rather costly.
um, great win, when i dropped my nephew off in berkely it was 13-0 dodgers.
its a save situation now
Not a fan of all the pink everywhere.
Its a bad look but at least its sexist
When the pitching coach came out, how was his message not “don’t throw a strike to moreland and go after andrus?”
A dropped popup compounded by no one covering first, a double caused by the first baseman having to cover the guy on first, and now a game tying home run. FKing stupid.
this is a free game anyway. and it’s gonna take 7 to win anyway
I look forward to seeing this comment again during the ALCS.
Sounds like the A’s agree judging by the number of mistakes they’re making.
If Andrus can manage to homer his next AB he could complete a series cycle. I was so sure he even had a season cycle in him.
If Andrus can manage to homer his next AB I won’t say anything bad about him for a week.
Andrus sucks.
Burch Smith looks great. Put him above Trivino on the totem pole.
The Burch is Back
Wait seriously no Ramon???
Seems like ramon must be hurt…
I can understand wanting to give Ramon a full day off with his thumb thing. But I would have been tempted to see if Allen could run into one.
That was the 5th consecutive start by Irvin where the time of game came in at under 3 hours. Of the A’s other 29 non-doubleheader games, 9 were sub-3 hours.
It may not be the best you’ve ever had, but if not, at least it’s quick.
#homelesspersonsmarkmulder
Ramon is hella clutch.
that doesn’t even account for defense, yeah?
I assumed it does, and just excludes pitchers. But now I’m not sure.
WPA is based only on the final result of the plate appearance, so generally just assigned to batter & hitter, not defenders.
Also
– Yes, looks like it is just hitters. Bieber, Flaherty, and Cole would be up there too.
– It also looks like it is using each player’s last 162 games played, which goes back farther for Laureano than for some of the others.
Service time deadline must be passing on Wednesday.
The clip ends without showing his throw in.
He just hit a triple?!
yes
Great win for the Dubs tonight, they played a solid all-around game against the best in the west. When they lock in they can look pretty good.
Vacation (!!!) Bleg.
The Neverclan (kids now 8/6/2) is going to Disneyland–by car. The arrival logistics are that I have to be on an important zoom (i.e. in a fixed location, not driving) at 9 the morning before our first day in the park, which makes a hotel on the way south enticing, as the rest of that day just needs to get us to our hotel by the park.
I have my personal go-tos in a situation like that (Santa Barbara, for example) but I thought you FKers might have some good thoughts. Needs to involve a hotel, not camping, for Zoom reasons. Given the slow pace required to make it all work, also open to ideas about things to do on the way. Anyone try HWY 1 through Big Sur with little kids? (Seems either likely to blow their minds or blow up some carsick bags)
Are you staying at one of the Disney hotels? If so they’re usually accommodating of early arrivals. We drove all night and arrived at 0800 at Grand Californian once and they gave us a run immediately. Play the tired kids card for sympathy
We are, but GCA is apparently fully-booked so I don’t want to count on something like that (and don’t want to drive through the night before I’m “in” court). Sounds much more pleasant to work my way south gradually.
If you’re staying at GCA you have chance to do my very favorite thing at Disneyland. Ride Grizzly River Rapids wearing swimsuits then run over to the adjacent hotel and jump in the hot tub.
that would be great.
I have stayed there and the OG hotel. they are both a good time. I liked the hotel a little better but was glad it was with slightly older kids.
Good call. It’s our first time staying there (previously, we stayed at Park Vue since it’s closer than everything but GCA), so good to find ways to take advantage.
That’s not quite how it played out. Instead, nights 2 and 3 both ended with repeat near-0-line grizzly runs (with the park closing at 9, the ride was open until park closing) followed by soggy limps into the hotel.
Fun! Disney parks have a way of turning even hard-bitten cynics into ear-hat-wearing goofballs.
I hate that I love it so much
I’m not sure I’d get there alone, but with kids it absolutely does.
the only fun for me is when i spot the cheap spiders they used to mask the bullet holes in the haunted house glass and see the spot where the yippies went skinny dipping with tom sawyer.
I always just try to drive real fast on I-5, but of course I don’t have to be in court.
If you prefer 101, there’s always the Madonna Inn. Just over halfway from SF to Disneyland.
We never tried PCH with kids that young. I love it, but not exactly well appointed with places to stop when you need them in a hurry.
When are you going? I’ll be at the Residence Inn of Goleta this weekend.
Not quite that soon. The trip has kind of ballooned, so we’re going down on Sunday the 23rd to somewhere along 1 (Pismo, perhaps), getting from there to Anaheim Monday, then four nights in the Mouse’s bubble followed by a trek up the mountains to Big Bear before finally doing your I-5 hustle back home on memorial day.
(99)
I have no idea if kids would like this, but my friends just did a slower drive down to LA and they overnighted in Paso Robles to do this Art thing, Sensorio.
Oh man, Nurse U and I really really want to see this too. Might get there on a trip later this summer.
Love the idea, thanks!
I may need to check this out. I’ve been thinking about a trip to the central coast this summer. As a True Fresnan, even is displaced into SoCal, I am always called back to Pismo or Morro Bay.
Kaval retweeted this.
Give me a break with this “follow MLB’s direction” bullshit.
My gut read on this move is that they sensed a political consensus building around “reject HT and they can build at the Coliseum” and they yanked the relocation threat cord to take that option off the table. That was always the subtext; now it’s text.
Sounds right to me. Does this mean HT is dead, though? I thought the proposal had higher hopes.
Of course
lol
A’s ownership/city of San Jose to MLB: If you don’t approve our plans, the A’s will move to Portland, Las Vegas, Charlotte, Vancouver, San Antonio or Montreal.
A’s ownership/MLB to city of Oakland: If you don’t approve our plans, the A’s will move to Portland, Las Vegas, Charlotte, Vancouver, San Antonio or Montreal.
Also Kaval also said even if HT is approved, it wouldn’t open until 2027 now. I guess they need to build all the luxury condos before they can start on the actual stadium.
Yes I also interpret this as 80% idle threat, 20% remote contingency plan. I suspect MLB had lined up this play months in advance, and they timed it be far enough away from any city vote that it didn’t come off as heavy handed. Essentially I see this announcement as part of a strategy to get HT built, not as a signal that it’s in trouble
Comforting.
From Kaval’s letter to season ticket holders:
How long did the Blue Ribbon panel deliberate?
I would like all of this better if they leaned harder into it. “Look, we made mistakes too, but our stadium hunt is old enough to drink…”
ROOTED IN OAKLAND!
content aside (sad face), this must be the funnest group to hang out with
The FK is Cora so mad about here?
wow, kaval on the radio.
MLB is so bad at PR. this is so dumb i don’t think even the silliest of sycophants would believe this horseshit
Point is just to get people to contact the city council or whatever. Could be effective for that. Pretty embarrassing to listen to though….
Even as a strategy for that it is poorly conceived. The electeds all know that fan pressure is fleeting, and largely from outside of Oakland. There were at least 10 times as many gung ho Raiders fans showing up at lots more meetings and they meant absolutely nothing come election day and everyone knows this.
Kaval is still better than most in this role but his mask is slipping. And if his playbook isn’t any deeper that this they’re in trouble.
His interview just now on the tv postgame was mildly stomach-turning.
