Susan Collins is concerned

All the changes in DoD paying off, I guess
Yeah this was a concern raised during the George Floyd protests. Between the Guard, federal police, DHS, Border Patrol and ICE etc. that’s a lot of guns under direct executive branch command.
NYTimes is reporting that the DC National Guard have been activated / are being deployed.
Or the Vice-President in this case … what a FKing patsy that piece of sanctimonious shit is.
And died.
McConnell might be talked into providing the removal votes today, if only the House could safely convene to impeach.
I thought about that, too. He has to survive, first.
Are you serious?
Kind of? I honestly think this is so out of control that there could be conversations among some republican senators right now, maybe even with Pence, about whether we can take another two weeks. It’s not likely, obviously, but these are uncharted waters, and it is happening the day after the limits of Trumpism at the ballot box were clearly demonstrated.
It would strip him of the pension too.
Industry agrees
As meanwhile the DOW is up 1.44% today. I thought the market was supposed to dislike uncertainty?
On the FK home page the thumbnails don’t distinguish between the body of the post and the author’s sig line. So I briefly thought Susan Collins had resigned in protest.
Very briefly, right?
No, at http://freekraut.net/ you see:
America’s Coup Live
JAN 6, 2021
Susan Collins is concerned I hate when people resign before I figure out why I’m winning
I think you’d have to insert more text or empty line returns to change that, but I hope you don’t, it’s great.
No, I meant you entertained the idea that Susan Collins actually has a backbone only very briefly
LOL. That’s exactly how it went in my head. “Collins resigned in protest, that can’t be right.”
I need a gif of Mr. Shaibel saying “now you resign.”
Why are none of these suddenly troubled Republicans calling for Trump’s immediate resignation to save the FKing country? Hell, why aren’t the Democrats?
Northam sending National Guard from Virginia
Send in Maryland’s too. Pincer movement.
The assholes finally getting peppersprayed
this is from the asshole who tweeted a pic saying he was in pelosi’s office. it has since been taken down
this dude hasn’t tweeted in an hour. Assuming he is under arrest
that’s a lectern. Podiums are for standing on.
Is that US Grant behind him?
He is a stay-at-home father, who makes and sells furniture, while his wife is a doctor in Palmetto.
all these trumpers are so upper middle class
But the economic anxiety.
defund the police
yup
The guy in front of the Capitol now shouting through the megaphone for the mob to go and get rid of the news people
I gotta say, Joe biden is not the guy for this. I do not wnat to be chummy
Not the guy for what, exactly? There’s a lot going on.
for prosecuting the maga idiots.
He is going to turn the other cheek.
He was exactly the guy for that speech just now though. That’s what a President is supposed to do. Stand up for basic freedom and decency.
ok, yeah, for Jan 6, he is the guy, I worry about the forgiveness guy Jan 21
By contrast in Trump’s message he complains about his stolen landslide election in the first sentence, calls the other side evil, and tells the brownshirts he loves them.
what an asshole
Not his job to demand prosecutions. Merrick Garland is a righteous guy, and by all accounts the deputies are very good, so I am comfortable that justice will prevail.
yeah. probably he is doing it better than I would.
Next up, our theater critic’s rave review of Our American Cousin.
Jesus. fucking. christ.
ballpark figure!
Very industrious, it can’t have been easy to set up the canopy and gear right at the foot of the Capitol steps in the middle of a riot. Real bootstraps story. I’d wager a lot that the proprietor is an immigrant.
It speaks
“You’re very special.”
“We love you”
What a sad and disgusting day to be an American citizen. It’s five o’clock somewhere.
At least this
I don’t think the capitol can be cleared. today. they are going to have to do the election at the alternate location.
that is not what “breech” means
Obviously the cops are way friendlier with the rightists, today and every day. But withdrawing when outnumbered is a common cop tactic during protests. The more outrageous fault is in having reached that point at all.
Uh……what??
yeah, what?
Almost there:
Can’t wait to hear from that piece of shit Ted Cruz
He’s the victim in all of this, somehow. Anyway, send him money.
no, he’s speaking directly to those causing division.
oh wait.
Wish they would stop saying half the country disagrees with me. It ain’t half. We counted.
Don’t forget this other piece of shit.
In other coup news
what is happening here?
Ryan McCarthy of Capitol Police saying that DoD didn’t deny the request, only needed time to gather more information, which was around half an hour
This would actually be another great argument to give DC statehood
Seems like he wants to be more like Lincoln
Remember when Trump demanded ten years minimum for anyone damaging federal property?
I’ve been to a lot of protests, including many which started in daylight and morphed after dark. This is the time when those who aren’t down for violence will leave, and the crowd will start to look like they’re dispersing. 2-3 hours later though it’ll be gangs of 10-25 guys hitting targets and moving, hitting and moving, way faster than the cops can keep up with. In the last DC fascist rally a handful of regular folks got beaten in the streets, just for kicks. I hope everyone stays home tonight.
Yup, I will say the WTO in seattle in 99 was different, after the tear gas started in the morning, it was on all day
The last sentence of this is important. These people clearly think this putsch is going to result in them not facing consequences, so they are capable of anything.
Fuck yeah. They must be thinking – “it’s that easy?”
I had a comment half-written in my head before the 2016 election, undecided on whether I would post it here, or fb, or nowhere. As it was based on the assumption that Trump had lost, nowhere won out, but much of what I thought at the time still applies.
The gist was: Trump had not only lost but done serious damage to the whole Republican party, by exposing the truly ugly side of their base, the racists and anti-immigrants and fascist sympathizers, and thereby repelling a sizeable bloc of moderate voters. But, at this same time, this was not all good news for Democrats (and democrats). Things were still going to get worse before they got better. Because showing the base for what it was put establishment Republicans like McConnell in a bind. They didn’t really want to embrace the crazies, but now they realized they needed them. So the winking encouragement, the dog whistles, that had been going on at least since the time of Reagan, would only increase. The fringe had seen its power, and the tail was now wagging the dog. (Too many dog metaphors?) And it wouldn’t end unless the GOP truly imploded.
Looking back, I feel like the main thrust of what I was thinking at the time was spot on, but I missed some of the nuances. If anything, I was too optimistic.
Most obviously, Trump won that election, and the damage he has done to the country (public health, the budget, corruption and the rule of law) and the world (climate change, any sense of the US as a leader) are enormously worse than what he had done as a mere candidate. One aspect that it took me the full four years to understand (and that I’ve already commented on here) is that his worst aspects (the constant lying, the incitements to violence, the not even pretending to care about anyone outside his tribe) attract and excite almost as many voters as they repel. That’s depressing in its own right, and also has potentially grim implications for the post-Trump GOP, and whether that implosion will ever happen. Relatedly, given his power, mainstream Republicans followed his lead more enthusiastically than I expected. Senators like Susan Collins who might have been expected to reject him went limply along instead, and those like Lindsey Graham who might have gone limply along became full-on cheerleaders.
So here we are. In terms of the direct damage of Trumpism, today might be the nadir, or if not today, then some time in the next two weeks. Democrats will control the government, and start to undo some of the damage of the last four years. Given the small margin in the Senate (along with the probable continuation of the filibuster) and an extremely activist and hostile Supreme Court, that work will be frustratingly slow, but it will happen one way of another.
But in the broader sense, I fear that “it will get worse before it gets better” is still true. Voters have rejected Trumpism just enough to swing the presidency and the Senate, but not enough to force the much-needed reckoning on the right. I hear rumblings that McConnell is ready for a clean break, but I suspect the calculus will remain the same: they can’t afford to lose the fringe, so they will keep stoking it instead, denouncing the most extreme parts (armed storming of the Capitol, elections being rigged), while still feeding the sentiment underlying it (voter suppression in the name of making elections more “secure,” fear-mongering about BLM and antifa and “creeping socialism” and “they’re coming for your guns”). And they may well be able to pull it off, and take back congress in 2022 or the presidency in 2024. I don’t know how we prevent the second wave.
I have nothing to add but it reminded me that today I was appearing in court over zoom, my client in a residential treatment program appearing over zoom. You could see the house dog wandering about. When you call a case you announce your name and the clients name for the record, so today I got to say “Ed Sidawi for ms nash who is appearing remotely with a very good boy”
Until Nov 2016, but throughout that campaign, I still thought the numbers of the overt racist/fascists were greatly overstated by the social media echo chamber. Since then it’s become horribly clear that there are a lot of actual right-wing extremists, and that the GOP is conditioned to use them to further their evil but more traditional goals. I also date this back to Reagan, with the Christian conservatives. The mechanism is the same, it’s just the fringe that’s different, and larger.
I don’t see the GOP breaking out of that dynamic, and it sucks that we’re relying on the message of people like Mitt Romney to save us further decay. I don’t think it’s going to change and I am very worried that the next contender for lead fascist will be much more adept at avoiding Trump’s most idiotic steps.
On the Big Island beaches a few weeks ago I read the first in Perlstein’s series, Before the Storm. It’s a good look at Trumpism in its nascency in Barry Goldwater’s candidacy. Perlstein wrote that about 20 years ago with no knowledge of the Trumpism to come.
It’s on my bedside table for imminent reading
Predicting now that at least some of these fuckers like Cruz and Hawley are going to claim that failing to certify the electoral votes today means [fill in specious unconstitutional bullshit] Trump gets re-elected.
Not Cruz or Hawley, but probably some of the loonier house members and maybe Coach Tuberville, who will describe his reasoning in terms of the BCS rankings or something.
Trump is always #1 in the coaches poll, I’m sure.
Glad to see somebody shares my sense of humor on this shameful day.
i’m getting about as much work done today as the police.
I hope my guess is right, that those outside are being allowed to leave and those inside are getting arrested
When Erdogan thinks you’ve gone too far…
she says it like it was a stupid question about a reasonable action.
I honestly cannot stop laughing at this
That’s gold
Oh, I know the answer to this one!
Reason to doubt right now whether Trump is actually in control of the executive branch. This could get super weird.
Noticing how seamlessly New England Patriots attire fits in with the MAGA crowd. No A’s gear spotted yet, thankfully.
That’s a troll de primera clase
Christ, what an asshole
I mean if USA is really just a banana republic at this point, then why not treat the failed coup leader as they do in banana republics?
Remember this day forever. That’s Goebbles-style rhetoric. Despicable.
It was deleted by Twitter
As was the “You’re very special” speech you posted upthread.
I think this is an appropriate time to honor our scoreboard.
Rs working on Cruz, company
Unfortunately, that’s Ted’s kink.
Inshallah
That can be taken two ways.
My dad described it “It’s like mañana, without the urgency.”
Mitt!
Willard just doesn’t want to be seen as a rat
AYFKM
This is a fucking joke. Nobody is getting fucking arrested
Hey now … 13 arrests!
I bet at least the half are black congresspeople
some journos.
zoanne murphy is on wapo live right now talking about how they got stopped, she asked if they were arrested, and it was confirmed yes.
oh wait. they’re letting them go if they have press creds.
these are curfew kettles that started at 7:30.
Yeah, I’m watching it, too. Should go to bed, but just can’t
It’s not the biggest issue at the moment, but later on I want to hear more about the advance planning for today. Supposedly they put a lot of work into the coordination plans between Capitol and DC police and others. Now, maybe not everyone predicted how today would go down but a whole lot of people did. How could they possibly be so unprepared?
I’d expect congressional hearings on it very soon, followed by a detailed report.
This might actually have bipartisan support. They shat pants on both side of the aisle.
this fills me with so much rage
Recycled from 2000.
That explains the wrong flag
Wow, so there is a line
Though Heather Heyer’s mother’s words apply here too:
Maybe we are, belatedly, at that “At long last, have you left no sense of decency?” moment when even the people who have already established that they have no sense of decency start to calculate that being on the side of the crazies is no longer good for their careers.
It’s so depressing.
it’s the perfect time to put in their too weak notice.
The rats are jumping fast – deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews, social secretary Rickie Niceta, deputy chief of staff Chris Liddell, and (possibly) national security adviser Robert O’Brien and deputy adviser Matthew Pottinger.
ixnay on the aidingyay and abettingyay.
Turns out no, the GOP is largely going all-in with Trump and Qanon. McCarthy does not at long last have any decency…it was right there in his name!
Liz Cheney achieving RINO status is pretty great though.
LOL, Loeffler
Now I’m watching. I hate that you have to explain any of this to your friends in Stuttgart who don’t understand the nuances of the USA the way you do. Almost 60 years now and I’ve never felt so ashamed as I am today.
Yeah, it’s always a challenge, and I guess it will be even more so tomorrow
Booker calling out Cruz on fundraising, as well he should
Getting 11 or more of this motley crew to vote Trump crazy would be shocking.
Hawley is a spineless asshole and an insurrectionist, sure, but he also says IRREGARDLESS!!!
We were the same year at Stanford. I don’t think I ever met him though.
It looks like one of my college classmates will be Biden’s Secretary of Commerce, but likewise I did not know her.
where are we? is this the chance for them to object? or is this the debate after someone objects?
It’s after the Arizona objection. The hope is, it would be the last one. Original plan was to object to anything between 3 and 6 states certifications
when loeff said she wasn’t going to object i thought we were in the other part.
That was referring to further objections on the states to come
Think this is the debate after an objection (to Arizona). They’re not supposed to talk during the joint counting session.
k.
Yeah, each chamber separate/simultaneous consideration. Then they’ll reconvene jointly, then perhaps there will or won’t be further states objected to. We’re still in the A’s.
Rep Mo Brooks of Alabama full steam ahead with his illegal alien ballot fraud rant.
I’m so glad they switched away from him
Best wishes and go A’s
They better not preempt Jeopardy for this shit.
Goddamnit
Jeopardy aired at 8. One of the categories is “Your Government at Work.”
who is lindsey graham?
Aspiring comedian
maybe i’ll follow on twitter
This drunk Senator from South Carolina made a fool of himself on the Senate floor on January 6, 2021.
LOL
Honestly? If Matt Goetz or josh hawley were my clients, I would declare a doubt to their competence and have them committed to the state metal hospital
Nah, stake your defense on their unshakeable righteous belief. At least they aren’t admitting their fraud claims were always bullshit, like the Loefflers and such.
I mean, yeah, all the people in the room with you conceded, but I remember one guys supporters weren’t so acted, well, let’s say today reminded me of something.
And Hawley wins the competition for biggest senate FKwit, dealing Cruz yet another painful loss.
Andy Harris is a 63 year old former anesthesiologist. Collin Allred is a 37 year old former NFL linebacker.
Ah so they both have first hand experience with heavy narcotics.
I guess Andy Harris was just itching the throw hands with a former pro athlete and Al Lawson was closer.
The Republicans are low on former pro athletes these days, aren’t they. What happened to the days of Jim Bunning and J.C. Watts?
and Steve Largent and (going back a little farther) Jack Kemp.
Jeez, forgot about Largent. They had hall of famers in multiple sports!
Per your comment earlier about more and more extremists winning House seats I gotta think Aubrey Huff and Curt Schilling would fit right in.
I’m ready to vote for Draymond.
I’ll be shocked if there isn’t a push to recruit Herschel Walker to run against Warnock next year.
I didn’t realize that about Herschel. Looking at the @HerschelWalker Twitter account, ugh.
One of the Republicans who voted to impeach was a former NFL receiver, Anthony Gonzalez (not the Cal one).
Harris might have been packing though.
I gotta go vote, hold my gun.
hot take: the two that charged through had bait metal, like a stapler or something on then. Trying to get the police to search them or detain them in some way and Harris legitimately didn’t want to be the guy to be shot in the capitol.
Had a quick nap, how are things?
House about to vote down objection to Pennsylvania electors. Then House and Senate will reconvene and rest of tally is not expected to produce more objections. The long awaited declaration of Biden’s win, read by Mike Pence, could be less than an hour away.
Thanks. Wow, they got so much support in the house
Each House district represents only 700,000 residents on average, and district boundaries are drawn up in a hyper-partisan process. So extremists are far more common than Senators, who at least have to act like they care about all kinds of voters.
Very true. But still, after all that happened… I mean 100+ x 700,000…
We have a lot of large pockets of seriously deluded and resentful white folks across this land, who want their representatives to be avatars of their rage and ignorance. Anti-Obama backlash, Trump, and crap like Qanon have made that long-standing problem considerably worse in ways that I don’t know if most people truly recognize.
100 x 700,000 is roughly the same number of people who voted to re-elect Trump back in November.
Getting more common, and more extreme, each cycle, too. This last election ushered in a handful of truly scary members, and their youth suggests more to come.

i hope Ds have an objection to WY just to punk the MFs.
Fox News in the full it was actually Antifa, but look at the tragic loss of white patriotic life mode
It seems like a good way to find out who they actually are would be to arrest the ones who posted pictures of themselves committing multiple felonies on social media.
If the most obvious ones aren’t collared before the inauguration, Judge Garland better ready to clean house at the FBI.
I think the arrests can’t be made before the 19th
really? like the dude who broke into pelosi’s and stole her mail and has his face name and crime on pics posted all over? he can’t be held today?
I think the implication is that if they are charged now Trump could pardon them.
Yes, and for the record, he is prima facia guilty of the burglary and identity theft if this were a ca state prosecution. I don’t deal with federal statutes so I am sure there are mail felonies and political based felonies that I don’t know about.
there is no ongoing “threat” to the speakers office, so there is no rush
ok i see.
I don’t think he dares anymore or sees it in his interest.
Federal murder investigation will be opened in Capitol Police officer’s death
Or giving NYT their full name and location
This dude wore his work badge to the “revolution.”
Not over until Louis Gohmert proclaims his commitment to peaceful protest.
I guess Rudy didn’t find Tuberville’s phone number, after all
Cool, I can go to sleep now and awake to a brand new day! And/or a new low with 13 scary days left.
You guys, get a rest. I’ve got this. I’ll have complete information about New Zealand immigration requirements by the time you’re up again.
I don’t see how January 20 doesn’t make yesterday look like a tea party. I’m only being slightly facetious in suggesting a full national lockdown, as in: leave your own private property, be arrested immediately.
Nah, they’ll have coordinated heavy security plans in place for inauguration day. It will not be left to the Capitol and DC cops to arrange.
Is there any word on the arrests?
i heard 52 last night
The RNC winter meeting greets Trump with rapturous applause, even after his goons plant a bomb at their HQ. Truly shameless.
Ooh, hoping for some big transactions. Think their GM would move Mitt for a package of, like, Tulsi, Greenwald, and a couple of crypto-fascist “leftist” prospects?
lol, Megan McCain already tweeted and deleted Hawley/Tulsi 2024
Jesus Christ. How does her mother resist throttling her?
