But hey, welcome Jake! Try not to suck.
Game 1 at 2:10: Luzardo vs. Marco Gonzales
Game 2: Minor vs. “Servais said the Game 2 starter will be determined by how the first game goes.”
We’re back into the smoke for 5 or 6 hours:

What I discovered Blew. My. Mind. -- Pat Boone
Are they not closing up?
I would think closing the roof might trap some smoke in there and make it worse. There are some rain showers in the area so they might have to close it anyway.
Fow what its worth, the Bay area air quality management district forecasts improving air quality by thusday. Can’t find info for thursday in seattle, but it will rain that day.
both teams have that as an off day
found one that predicted rain wednesday and OK air
This isn’t somebody running up to the umpires after the national anthem with a false-positive test result. If they were going to bag today for air quality it would have been done by now.
The air in there certainly looks worse, on TV anyway, than anything we saw at the Coliseum.
to come out of this inning with no runs and fewer than 25 pitches is dumb
this does not look good
Pathetic offense is pathetic.
Not to point a finger, but to point a finger, Canha is .172/.333/.259 in his last 19 games, and that’s our cleanup hitter vs. LHP.
olson and davis and lamb?
His power loss is befuddling. I wouldn’t be surprised if it came out that he’s playing through something too.
Luzardo seems to throw at least three pitches after 2 strikes very often
first batter was three, second batter was two and the third batter was 1.
that’ll show me
it didn’t hit the bat
its either a ball or hbp
JOHNNY BENCH!!
That was a loud bat crack.
to be fair, it was a strike two pitches ago
The pitch he first complained about was high. But he should still shut the FK up.
how do so many lefties hit ramon?
Khris has 5 hits (35% of his season total) in his last 5 games.
Yesterday the Rangers’ radio announcers were surprised that Melvin sent up Seth Brown instead of Khris as the tying run in the 9th, notwithstanding the RH/LH issue. There’s still a lot of trauma there from his previous devastation of the Rangers.
KD is great in matchups where the pitcher doesn’t throw hard. For that reason, I’m not sure I would’ve used him against their closer.
I would’ve sent up Murphy though, who’s not only leading the A’s in hard hit % and wRC+, but he’s been one of the best in the league in hard hit % too (right ahead of Juan Soto coming into today).
coalinga?
Vacaville
Kerman
In the major leagues it’s definitely Kansas City.
Marcus!
“Met him on the corner of Broadway and Pound Town”??
vince, when you say “fastball away” on a 3-2 pitch, I expect that it was ball 4 not a swinging strike three
not complaining about that home run, but aesthetically, I want fences to be a little higher, it looks like an adult dunking on a kiddie basket with an 8 foot fence
Our local Purple Air AQIs are all in the 240-250 area right now so my living room smells like smoke. With the accompanying visual on television I almost feel like I’m in T-Mobile Park.
Man, that airhorn noise on a strikeout is obnoxious.
I think they got a shipment of the 2019 balls
I miss chapman
Bob it’s a 7 inning game, the starting pitcher does not have to make it through 5.
ugh
Note to Bob, this is extra true for Mike Minor.
Piscotty out again.
The entire team will get hurt two weeks before the end of the season, no matter how long that season is.
Another player pointlessly rushed back from injury for whatever reason.
this is the problem with luzardo. I think later in his careerm he doesn’t give anything to lewis to hit. It is better to pitch left left to seager than lewis
I think he needs to do something different with his fastball. Either add backspin to the 4 seam or develop a cutter. Sinkerballers just don’t fare well in today’s launch angle environment. Montas has the same problem too.
lol at scoring decisions. If the a’s win, getting 7 outs, luzardo get ND and Petit? gets the win?
I hope you’re still asking that same question in about 45 minutes.
or 3 minutes
naturally
I had a comment half-typed about how MLB’s retention of the extra off-days in postseason will benefit the A’s because of the strength of their bullpen. That got the ctrl-A, spacebar treatment pretty quickly.
I won’t say Gonzalez deserves a win, but he earned it
Thanks Bob.
Honestly, go fuck yourself Bob. If you don’t give a shit about winning this game, I can’t believe I wasted my time watching this shit.
Im not mad, Im just disappointed.
We’re seriously still leaving Soria in???
Man, I had forgot the pain of Soria when he isnt on.
1) they are doing a good job with the sound effects at tmobile
2) it was nice when fosse shut up during the tense moments
Why bother now Bob? Let him give up 20 more at this point.
Aieee!
Goodness FKing Gracious aaaaahhhh
7 innings is already too many for this shitshow.
Also, this might help keep Houston out of the playoffs, so it is actually good?
This Seattle team does not look like they are about to outplay the *s over the last week and a half.
Hindsight 20/20 but I would have liked Petit to stay in for the 6th. Odds are you arent pitching him in game 2 so get a bit more usage.
This
I could certainly envision a cancellation of Game 2.
The air didn’t look as bad on tv at the end of the game as at the beginning, but she is saying it is > 280 now.
Game one shouldn’t have happened. Game 2 most certainly shouldn’t
I was radio-only until just now, visually this is appalling. Way worse than anything I’ve seen them play through in Oakland.
Yeah. This is a disgusting and I would play under protest.
For a minute I thought she was talking about having Piscotty out there to get reinjured.
last pitch to grossman was a strike, but the first one wasn’t
Well that was just FKing hideous.
it was, but I am not overly concerned. Right now, short of a collapse, they are in the playoffs and whomever they are matched against they need to win 2.
All the playoff teams, but the A’s and astros, have a good #1 and a decent #2. It’s going to take getting timely hitting from olson and canha and cody ross or whoever they just signed.
It’s be nice to have the confidence that you team is going to dominate, but It will never be like that for the 2020 A’s
I had a different reply. It was too gloomy.
I’m amazed we have had this much actual baseball this year. And our team has one of the best records in the league. I’m still going to be pissed when it ends, but I will try to look back after each game and be glass half full for now.
Current PurpleAir map
The 732 at Happy Camp means it isn’t.
Here’s us right now (I’m near Zephyr Cove and Round Hill). Very close to Seattle’s numbers, and I would not want to be throwing 100 pitches, or even walk over to Safeway.
If I am melvin, I say We aren’t playing.
We’ll take the L
See you next year.
IF: Olson, La Stella, Semien, Machin?
OF:Grossman, Laureano, Canha, DH Davis?
C: Murphy/Heim
Bench: Kemp, Brown, Lamb, etc.
Still not a disaster, especially if recent signs of life from Davis’ bat are real, but certainly not inspiring as much confidence as we would like.
Did Puig ever recover from COVID? Has anyone tried the Beltre phone yet?
No.
It’s going to happen, they don’t care at that point
Plus they’ll be able to charge $1000/ticket, and will have a bunch of Marlins Men willing to pay.
I say we put all the Marlins Men in a bubble and never let them out.
Ummm Mr. .116/.240/.140 is DHing.
OK, I take back the not a disaster part.
Bases loaded one out with Canha and Lamb Chop coming up, expected runs is something like 0.1, so at least they have exceeded that already.
He went 2/3 against Oakland, and 3/40 against the rest of the league.
I’d hate to think they are playing this game because it is on national tv.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression, Lake Jamb.
Laureano got Laureano’d.
That Lewis kid is pretty good.
yeah, he’s fun
Arrrggghhh this really isn’t going to be our day is it.
So that’s what it feels like to get Ramon’d. It sucks.
Lamb does look good in Kelly green and white cleats. So he’s got that going for him.
very clean looking young man
Glenn keeps getting clowned on fly balls. Though to be honest I also thought Machin got all of that.
maybe there’s more friction when the air is solid!
The name Frankoff is more fun if you say it like you’re a character in Young Frankenstein.
it’s pronounced fränköff.
Its not Garth Eeorg?
No it’s pronounced Iorg.
ASVD
lol
When Minor spots his fastball just perfect his other pitches work well enough to get by. Not unlike Fiers, with less dynamic stuff.
Baaaaad man.
Might be the only time we get to say it.
Frankoff’s agent might want to call his old Korean league team.
“Frankoff” certainly rang a bell. I must have seen him pitch in Reno, either as a River Cat in 2014 or as a Sound in 2015.
He was always a favorite of the A’s twitterati, I think because his wife had an account.
generic god right winger
There was no number of runs this inning could have produced that would have been enough.
that was an uninspiring 5 run batting around
Caught stealing down six runs, that’s awful.
Glen going on about how Seattle has a couple of players in the minors they are really excited about. They have that every 3 years or so.
yeah, but they have two right now that are gonna be good. especially if lewis pans out like he kinda is
Forget it Ed, its Seattle town.
Somehow I was in Seattle and at the game when Yuniesky Betancourt made his MLB debut, with a triple in his first AB. I remember how excited they were about that.
Glen and Dallas give 0 fucks about game 2.
Yeah, end of a long day working at home I get overly casual too.
Also I don’t care that much about this pointless oddity, shut up already. Maybe talk about the amazing Mike Minor performance we’re watching instead.
New guy!
OK, I don’t think we have a bullpen train wreck in us that can blow this one.
And we can put in Orf and Brown now right?
Nope.
Edit: Yep.
David Forst would like note made of the contributions from Minor, La Stella, and Lamb here today.
This has definitely been a nice bit of Homer Baileying by Minor.
Id like to point out that 7 inning games are garbage and pur team likes the full 9 thank you.
Eat innings, save the bullpen, that’s exactly why they traded for Minor. Nice job tonight.
Nice split, fellows.
And updating the stat, 1-7 with 12 splits in doubleheaders in the 2000s.
Chapman plays game one, its a win. I think we lost 2 outs there.
PLay 9 innings, its a win.
I don’t like the 7 inning games as much as I would have liked them in 2014 or 2015 or years I cannot recall.
I think just about all of us are familiar with Telegraph Ave. near the Cal campus. As the excellent architectural writer John King says, there is no possible way to be neutral about this building.
Yuck.
What he leaves out is that Sarachan bought it, and then left it vacant and rat-infested for so long, to prevent the owners of Amoeba across the street from buying it and expanding. And I wouldn’t be surprised if, when he was finally forced to build something, he made it as hideous as possible for similar reasons.
nah. that guy is a class act through and through.
lol.
https://www.berkeleyside.com/2020/02/24/a-moorish-tudor-fever-dream-is-unveiled-on-telegraph-avenue
While screwing Amoeba was definitely a goal at the onset I don’t think that fully explains the entire vacant rat-infested lot period. I’ve heard credible suggestion that Sarachan’s own mental health was a big factor in the later years. Also, the City was two-faced and ineffectual in pursuit of the tools it has at its disposal to force sale or development much sooner
Sarachan sold the land before ground was broken, so the new owners weren’t bound to follow through on his bizarre vision. I agree with both the original architect and John King…it does look like crap, not remotely realistic to the ostensible model, but it’s also at least not the same building we see everywhere else in town, reduced to the most boring common denominator through tortuous public processes.
I like weird things. It doesn’t look like the “vision,” that’s fine
good. I like that
Makes the Minor acquisition even better with five-man rotations in play.
So the extra days are going between the opening best-of-3 round and the Division Series at the neutral ballparks, I guess to put everybody in the bubbles for a few days before the Division Series games start. October 28 for Game 7 is the same as the original schedule; Opening Day was going to be March 26, early because if they had pushed that back one more week, Game 6 of the World Series would have been on Election Night.
Could be an illusion but I might as well try this excellently-named hot sauce.
Takes a whole pail of water just to cool you down, after you eat something with that stuff on it.
I guess my off day plan should have included playing in oakland at 10 and 1, then hoping on bart to play at Pac bell at 430 and 730
Certainly the league should have cancelled our games yesterday, but when they didn’t, I don’t get why the teams didn’t just get together and decide not to play. If they could do that for the protests a couple weeks ago, why couldn’t they for conditions that made playing unsafe for their own health?
