Also, the doubleheader should not be as big a deal for reliever usage as it normally would be. If your starters typically go 5, you need the same number of relief innings for two 7-inning games as you would for one 9-inning game.

They are sticking to the original schedule with all the off-days. Even dumber this year than usual. Just have one off-day after the end of the regular season, one after each round and play all the rounds concurrently (i.e. Game 1 of every Division Series on Saturday, Oct. 3). Game 7 of the World Series would be Oct. 23 which is 5 fewer days for somebody to Mengden the postseason. Some games would overlap on TV because it’s not possible to play a postseason game in less than 3.5 hours anymore, but that happens anyway.

AL first round 9/29-10/1. (NL one day later)
3 off days (For travel or extra pre-bubble testing, or to avoid conflicting with football)

I’m just annoyed because it feels like mismanagement. They’ve admitted that he’s been dealing with this for a while, but he didn’t get a single day off this season and it feels like they basically played him into the ground. Even when he got hit in the head and was dealing with the headaches, he didn’t even get the next day fully off as he was put in as a defensive replacement.
I don’t know if more days off meant he could’ve avoided this, but I just feel like this team’s culture hasn’t been conservative enough with managing injuries or playing through pain. It’s such a BS old school notion that playing through pain should be worn as a badge of honor. Even with Puk, they were talking about ramping up his throwing again this weekend before it came out that he had to have the shoulder surgery.
And we’re still intent on running out Semien every day. They’re bringing up Brown instead of an actual SS to spell him.
I forget where I saw it, but I thought that I’d read that he’d been potentially dealing with this since the start of the season. Even a small strain would be considered a “tear”, which in theory could have healed over time, before getting to the point of needing surgery. Alas, here we are.

On a more positive note, Heim is starting today for the 4th time in 8 games (over 6 days). It would be really nice to have two catchers good enough offensively and defensively that we can not run one of them into the ground for once.
