Everyone will pitch but Fiers.
No Chapman, no Semien to start. They may get bregman back.
2 of the next five should be good enough to stay in first for a while.

Kemp should be the light hitting ex player that hurts them, yeah?
Good call.
please continue, sir
That slow curve from Bassitt terrifies me. That second one missed two feet high.
The answer is 42.
What is the temperature, in degrees Celsius, that it feels like to Chris Bassitt?
Sigh if Puk’s arm is shot, that would make 3 top 10 overall picks going kaput.
The ump should be checked for heat stroke after a couple of these calls.
So Robbie Grossman is our best position player.
Ed’s prediction comes true!
safe, but not overturned
There is no way they overturn this.
Looked safe on replay but it will not get reversed.
Time to get fked again.
I’d be ok with a reversal despite the enraging capriciousness.
Melvin needs to lose his shit on someone at this point.
Nice tater kid!
I had to move a bookshelf yesterday and with it my A’s bobbleheads, and I was reminded of how cool hairy wall-climbing Oakland Reddick was. Clean shaved Houston Reddick seems boring AF.
yah it’s weird.
Fosse is soliciting chicken pie from townsend right now
He’s still talking about chicken pie.
three innings in a row
Still
and again in the 8th
Now Im going to have to listen tomorrow to see if he keeps it up.
He’s going to be legitimately pissed if Townsend doesn’t bring him some.
Townsend reports they are on their way
Hound with the athleticism.
Can we make this their SP’s last inning?
he is not facing olson.
Is KD still on the team? I kinda forgot him as a potential PH option in the 9th yesterday.
yes, the active bench players for the A’s are now davis semien and chapman, no?
Has KD played since we came back?
I like how the A’s still find a way to play short handed even in a year with 28 roster spots.
And Heim.
C Bass using the WHOLE park.
I was told Machin doesn’t strike out.
Nice, LaStella’s contact skills are so refreshing.
no elbow guard for laureano
contact? with a runner at third? is that even allowed?
That extra run makes me feel better.
Well, here we go, hoping for DieKKman instead of DieBBman.
sigh
I will never not feel concerned watching him pitch.
nid!
Agreed on the last comments above-esp LaStella. I dont know how the contracts would work, but would like to see his stay around. We need 1-2 guys that arent TTO.
Should be cheap, fills a need both at 2B and as a contact hitter.
The risk is that he’s already kind of old and has never been a full-time player. Maybe that’s not a problem, his splits aren’t actually that extreme.
Well and being the A’s I woukd expect him to be in some quasi platoon with 2 other utility infielders anyways.
It should not take more than 2/10 or 2/12 with maybe an option, but the A’s will need to spend on Hendriks, Soria, and Petit replacements, along with the Chap/Olson arb 1 raises + potential Semien QO offer.
Fisher may decide that Kemp is good enough.
Maybe the world series money will help.
Balk Talk is such a stupid name. Sorry this finally got to me.
yup
thanks for coming to my telk talk.
Diekkman had Reddick completely owned in that matchup and still fucking walked him.
Unless they are actually discussing balks, pitcher’s moves, etc it needs to go away.
Y’all love to complain about Diekman but he has been most excellent.
That’s what makes him excellent.
And PARTY ON, DUDES!
[shreds air guitar]
My daughter said the new Bill & Ted is ridiculous and perfectly just what you’d want from it.
ANOTHER WALK, DAMMIT
That pitch count bodes well for tomorrow
of course fosse loved taking infield.
I mean, I loved watching it as a kid
Even by * bullpen standards Cy Sneed is about as white flag as they come.
A Fine-Something-That-All-People-Need!
Wow, I hadnt realized just how bad the Machin’s line is.
It’s the Machin-0 line.
ASVD
Bob should have challenged that just to keep his streak up.
Nice win gentlemen.
Excellent!
Three pitches, three fly balls to the same guy.
he should have have everyone but ramon leave the field
I thought that first one was gone, on Lou’s first pitch, and I mentally prepared to drive to the Coliseum and give him a hug.
Have a 9th inning Sweet Lou.
Sneed threw 40 pitches in the bottom of the eighth and Lou threw three in the top of the ninth. Baseball is a game of contrasts.
Wait, do I have that right? 1-2 from each division and two more teams with best record qualify for the playoffs and the only advantage you have for winning the division instead of sneaking in with the losing record is playing the mini-series in front of your fans who are not allowed in the stadium?
Except the games may be played at a neutral site.
Now they’re saying we would host the first round, with subsequent rounds held at a neutral site (Dodgers and Padres parks, for the AL).
I would not understand neutral site for a 3-game series, on a COVID-19 basis in addition to the home field advantage issue. Longer series which would otherwise require travel, neutral site does make sense.
The only advantage is being able to bat in the bottom half of the inning. And for us, taking the division crown from the Astros cause FK ’em.
But yes, somehow Manfred expanded the playoffs this year and made winning your division more meaningless.
Home field advantage matters less in baseball than the other big US sports. 60% NBA home winners, 57% NFL, and 54% MLB, per this old Dave Cameron article. I’ve never quite understood why that is…baseball confers an actual advantage (batting last) per the rules, and park configs vary widely so a home team roster can be tailored for the field. NBA and NFL don’t have either of those. They do have louder fans and more scared refs, so I suppose that matters more.
My WAG is that the new extra inning rule further decreases the home team advantage slightly…chance for visitors to apply pressure in top of inning, also aligns with closer use better.
Now I realize they’re not using the extra inning rule in the playoffs, thankfully.
I would think just the opposite. With the runner on 2nd, the decision whether to play for 1 run or for a multi-run inning is much easier in the bottom half of the inning than in the top, and that seems like a pretty significant advantage.
Kris. today is your day. Do not swing with zero or 2 strikes.
Sit on the 68 mph curve.
I’m having lunch in Redmond, OR. Yay doubleheaders, pretty much ideal for a not all that interesting 8 hour drive.
Also, checking the SiriusXM satellite listings it looks like they will carry the home team broadcast as usual. That means the Astros broadcast for one game. I would usually prefer Ken and Vince but I did hear about 3 innings last night and I don’t expect the Astros announcers to utter the phrase “chicken pie” at all. One of the all-time Shut The Fuck Up Ray! performances, that.
They may remind you that the drums are a fan thing…
Ramon was listening.
Uh, wow. Exactly 68!
Leftist comedian podcast types are still shaking with rage on Twitter because LeBron called Obama for advice and then didn’t, like, spearhead a general strike or something. It’s weird as hell.
A’s batting in the top of the 1st wearing the home whites.
Switched to the audio feed late B1 but did not hear any chicken pie references. Assuming Ray went and picked on up in the morning to get his fix.
no chicken pie yet
today he is focused on grunts
Please show something KD
Yes!!
KHRUSHED!
Unbelievable. Literally, I saw it and still don’t believe it. Maybe Greinke threw him a meatball on purpose, one head case to another?
Brantley’s two doubles were maybe a cumulative three feet off the baselines on either side. Nice jib of Montas to stay focused and get the next guy to end the threat both times.
get over the zone or under, not both
This has worked out well so far
Maybe Grossman should hit righty.
it’s fine for now
Gah, that was frustrating.
Bob always wants to get his starters through 5 but you’ve gotta treat this like it’s the 7th inning already.
Drat. Didn’t even miss location much, Brantley was just looking for that exact pitch.
it’s just tied. I think its ok
If it goes to extras in an abbreviated game, do they play the 8th and 9th normally?
no, but astros are home
“The chicken pies are on the way!”
I like all of this not striking out after leadoff doubles.
It’s just crazy enough to work.
KD! Twice to right-center with authority!
Need to get him in more against guys who can’t throw above 91.
Did Dusty fall asleep or something?
Apologize to Diekman!
I believe in Grossman now, but I’m still not quite there with Diekman.
He thrives off of our remarks!
LeStella is damn useful.
So safe we may actually get this one reversed.
Did I just read that we had a successful challenge?
Gotta love BoMel’s reaction.
It probably wouldn’t have mattered but my god, that was another terrible slide. Murphy could’ve seriously broken an ankle.
Nice win.
W00t!
I don’t think it’s too much to ask that the *s leave Oakland in third place.
It sounds like they’re doing a bullpen game for Gm 2…let’s hope it goes how we would expect it to go.
[check’s A’s probable]
Us too
There is a small difference between the 2. You could say it is Minor.
That is all I was hoping for with the trade…we good now.
I think I phrased this wrong – let’s hope it goes how we wouldn’t expect it to go.
Oh come on, Bill
has the DOJ ever worked a defense side?
Yeah, they defend normal suits against the federal government.
i am also where emily is:
for fucks sake, he is not leaving office if the vote is 130,000,000 to 1
Each new outrage is just so much more horrible than any worst case scenario I ever imagined, under Reagan, Iraq I and II, after Bush v Gore, whatever. Once one administration called the bluff of the fabled American checks and balances the whole thing just turned to shit.
I don’t know what to be annoyed at with minor.
Astros got the leadoff man on, but it was only a minor threat.
i feel seen
damnit
This guy started the year with the Sugarland Skeeters.
He is one of those guys that you’ve never heard of but will somehow go 4.2 giving up no runs and 2 hits.
there is one
There we go.
Saw that Olson blast coming after the way the rest of the inning had gone.
I hate how good Brantley is.
Aw, they didn’t run on Ramon.
Come on, really?
Maybe we should try throwing more strikes.
JFC
Oh good, we’re shooting ourselves in the foot.
Argh…
no big deal, its tied. plenty of time
Couldabeenworse
I really wish they made that rumored trade for Trevor Rosenthal. There’s always been something unsettling about your fireman being a guy who throws 88.
Machin’s first xbh.
Sweet, Lou!
Good Lou.
Lou quietly putting up a 2.55 FIP this year.
If they reverse this Bob needs to get tossed.
Maybe I don’t know what the word “unbelievable” means.
has grossman ever hit a home run righty?
This is a bad match up for davis.
got into that kid a bit. that’s ok. Does dusty burn him for tomorrow by sending him out? I stick with wendelken
well, that aint chapman and semien
Ugh, Pinder’s the one that needs to get that.
Ugh
hopefully i can come around.
I braced for getting swept. I was excited about the first win and didn’t care what happened in game 2 until the top of the 4th
Weems getting loose. I guess we have already given up.
Rookie righthander for that fucker kyle tucker
It’s a little weird we didn’t use Soria for the 7th.
Still can win this with a bloop and a blast.
seven inning games are so dumb. I don’t even know why they exist. I used to think it was an OK idea, but it doesn’t cut down on contact or travel
there is your bloop
Chap pinder has the best batting gloves
OK no problem our best hitter is up.
The infield defense that features Machin as a shortstop is a huge problem. If Semien can’t play everyday, they really need a defensive minded infielder as a backup.
nick allen would mean a roster move, yeah?
puk–>60, nick allen, call him up as the extra for the remaining double headers, bat him 9, he gets 2 ABs in 7 innings unless the team is hitting. You can hit for him the third time as its likely the 6th or 7th.
Probably not great that it is a quarter to nine and still almost completely dark outside my house.
This is nuts.

So basically, the sky is falling?
Heh heh. Just another day in our apocalyptic hellscape.
it’s surreal.
just went outside and there was a clay horse sitting on a tree!
The lights are still taking full effect.
I was just thinking this. What if the double header was today??
Fortunately, Charlie’s orange baseballs never caught on.
I despise an east wind here in winter because that’s our most frigid weather, but now it’s just pleasantly cool, and with no fires to our east AQI is 8.
Apparently phone cameras conspire to suppress the truth about to color of the sky.
Trump must be feeling pretty worried if he’s rolling out the fake Supreme Court list again.
I know, right? He really rushed it, he said it would be released by Sept 1 and its only 9 days late rather than infinity days late like all his other promises.
LOL at Cruz, Cotton, and Hawley being on there. What a farce.
Correcting a previous typo Mike Pence clarifies: Dismiss it? No, Handout!
Geeks!
So the ball can still fly through this air I see.
can he stop leading off?
Im ok with that. I think that makes it unanimous.
Someone broke the A’s TV feed.
I am not getting audio on the mlb app.
The A’s are not getting anything done in the game
Audio and video are fine for me (on my TV) but the A’s offense has disappeared.
MLB at bat radio is back. i had no interruption in video or audio on hulu+
Luzardo is so close to being a dominant pitcher. But he is not
Maybe springer shouldn’t hit anymore. Seems safer
RIP Ronald “Khalis” Bell. I hope to honor your legacy by listening to your song every night.
Has he ever gotten a strike on the quick pitch? (while i was looking it up i think he threw one)
Also, murphy is in the positive on pitch framing
So we’re getting no-hit by the guy just up from A ball? Shocking.
And only one hard hit ball
And only two hard hit balls
I mean, come on. he has a fastball and a slider. one soft line drive hit and two walks?
dammit
I already like the new pitcher better.
the A’s are just terrible, I suppose
They have the need for sneed.
Josh James is also great, and will suffice.
James is probably the best guy for us next to Sneed.
baker was teammates with scioscia
Listening to the *’s radio broadcast yesterday they were talking about Vuch for a while and they said Dusty was one of his favorite players.
Stew was also on those Dodgers teams.
As easy as it is to dislike Dusty as a manager he must be a pretty good guy, as he seems universally liked. Tom Stienstra is his fishing buddy.
I do think dusty is a good person. I dislike his managing.
That would be a fun fishing trip!
All I know is this Astro’s pitcher is a guy who cant get no love from me.
Need to separate grossman and olson. Grossman is terrible batting right
Don’t swing til 2 strikes.
even then, has to be like a 3-0
That was my approach to hitting once pitchers started overpowering me, around age 12.
Someone forgot to tell Kemp.
Give Roxy some runs please.
Fucking Kemp, what did Murphy just do.
LaStella with a great chance for his signature A’s AB to date.
Memorable!
Yesssssss
Oh thank god
LaHella
the scorekeeper had to at least THINK about calling that an error, yeah?
Usually once you go into a slide/dive they let you off the hook.
When Dusty pulled his starter was he aware he was winning? It really feels like he just kept bringing in the worst arm he had.
I was confused about why Soria was in, then I thought “where’s the runner on second?”
I think Bob might be tempted to bring in Diekman for Brantley, etc in the 9th and then Hendriks in the 10th.
Actually guess not, Hendriks is warming up.
I am so confused. I keep thinking machin starts at second and he should be pinch run for
It wouldn’t be the worst thing for tucker to reach. Assuming you get the next batter, he is someone I don’t want on 2nd to start the 10th
Maybe we should win it in the 9th then.
While I think you both had good ideas, I will have to sign off on Andeux’s.
Fosse not a big fan of Tucker’s act at the plate.
that was obnoxious. even if he was miguel Cabrera.
Hopefully he gets tossed after throwing the bat and helmet
Amazing take by Murphy. He’s been quietly good at the plate.
This “pitch framing” business has become total BS, I don’t care which team’s catcher is doing it. If I was a home plate ump and had seen video of certain catchers blatantly repositioning their gloves I’d tell them if I see you move your glove after catching a pitch it’s a ball, I don’t care where I saw it cross the plate.
he didn’t offer and its not reviewable
well, at least he hit the ball
Ramon!
Ramon!!!
Ramon!
Discover me, Ramon!
Sweet sweet Celebration.
shout out by vince
lol. ramon does not react to the gatorade shower
Magic number is 12, yeah? (About to be 11 against Seattle.)
3 wins in this series keeps chapman form playing a little longer.
10 (10)
I thought he wanted to clog the bases
I know I’m late to the party, but when’s the last time you saw a lead-off DH?
NLCS preview? Phillies and Marlins start a seven game series tomorrow.
So I guess our choice these days is light or air, but not both.
The air looks less hellish but measures out worse today. Around 200 here in Berkeley, 180 by Coliseum. Wonder if there’s any chance we see an AQI cancelation today.
Maybe delayed to a late start if that would help?
I’m tempted to try cleaning my TV screen to clear that hazy look but I don’t think it would help.
Our local AQI, which was that gorgeous 8 yesterday, is back to that sadly normal, aromatic 157 today.
watching st louis/detroit to see blue sky.
Notes:
-The tigers shall remain namless color analyst is mumbling like a long time drug user or more likely multiple concussion having middle aged man
-fireworks shot off after homers. Seems dangerous and since no one is there, and the broadcast is on delay. I assume the people around the park know a home run before they see it on the teevee

watching on ipad, hulu is a few seconds behind radio in at bat, i usually sync them up so radio is about a second faster, with hulu on my regular tv its about 30 seconds behind. I can’t justify syncing it up
I look out the window but I can’t see the sky
The air pollution is a-fogging up my eyes

And make like an A’s man
Thanks for the earworm.
Sean could pitch 2 CGs at this rate.
Trying to join the Billy Martin Memorial 14-Inning Complete Game Club.
with the long fly balls he will lose it in 10
44 pitches thru 5 IP, that’s echoes of Randy Jones.
Manaea is on a 78-pitch pace thru 6 IP. Randy supposedly threw a 68-pitch CG, though pitch counts weren’t a thing in the 70s and aren’t shown in those box scores. Check the time of game on his CGs, though; they are usually under 2 hours.
kriti’s donuts in danville’s time in the fosse barrel is now
Vince with a welcome bit of STFU: “Game’s on the field, Ray.”
Oh damn.
Well done!
There was nothing further OT from Ray for the rest of Vince’s inning. I imagined Vince, after the top of the 4th, ripping off his headset, leaning around into Ray’s booth and screaming “Either talk about the GD FKing ballgame or go home and play with your grandchildren, you FKing decrepit POS!”
The Ramon reaction to the Gatorade gets better every time I see it.
That is so me when people try to be fun and goofy at work.
At first I thought he said “asshole” under his breath a couple seconds afterwards, but it was probably (in light of what he said afterwards) just “that’s cold.”
Urquidy may only have 80 pitches so this inning regardless of what happens has been good for us.
My thoughts exactly. Get into the chewy goodness that is the *’s bullpen.
ugh
Damn, some nice catches from the *s outfielders.
springers nike glove is so ugly though
good job guys
Has Ramon been wearing a mask in the outfield and I just didnt notice,or is it fire related?
Just today, AQ related
he has worn it in the past but its sporadic. he was coughing a lot yester
8th inning, notice he’s not wearing it anymore. Just wearing one of those in the grocery store and post office, I can’t quite imagine playing defense in baseball with that, a little too distracting.
And unless it was an N95 it hardly helped protect his lungs at all.
Can we score some fking runs now.
a tired urquidi or the astros bullpen. they ahve to be able to score, yeah?
There we go
Wait..are you telling me Dusty left a starter in too long?
ken really undersold that
poor Machin being forced to swing at that
On those xfinity commercials, who needs sports hub experience, one place for all scores. Are there poeople no ipads/computers?
Is that the same ad with a slowed-down out-of-tune version of a Fleetwood Mac song?

FK replay.
On some of these, if I were Melvin, I would announce that the A’s are playing the game under protest, on the grounds that irrefutable evidence is required to overturn the call on the field. Make MLB point to the “irrefutable evidence”.
Do you remember last year when MLB posted high quality, proprietary film of the replay reviews
this
Nice series
It really was. I’m not even mad about the one that got away.
correct me if i am wrong, but the astros never won a 9 inning game, yeah?
You are not wrong.
This was a FKing excellent job of Game Thread posting by Ed. Four days of solid baseball with just a minor, petit hiccup.
Well Chapman can take all the time he needs now.
I’d also like to see KD get some more ABs-especially against Tejas.
Manaea-Heim is a thing now.
85 combined pitches. Pretty good.
So the * get the Dodgers for two starting Friday while the Mariners get the Dbacks who have the worst record in the league. They’re just two games up on the Mariners at this point.
Sad!
none of those replays went your way josh
nothing went your way in the 4th inning of game 2 of the double header josh
Other than that you have sucked
There’s a full video of 2003 ALDS game 5 on Youtube. I’m not sure why I started watching it. I shut it off after they announced Melhuse PHing for Dye.

Without clicking, I’m going to say that’s Roth, but “armies of credentialed factotums” is very Ratto.
Roth indeed, the whole article is full of scathing revolutionary critique.
Also worth noting what a uniquely bad moment it turned out to be for Deadspin to hew to the stick-to-sports directive. Cue Nelson Muntz laugh.
Ratto must’ve felt called out by Roth’s wordsmithery, he rejoins:
