I’m at a sports bar in Reno after drive from Portland (nearly ten hours). Bartender wearing A’s cap, A’s on three TVs without my having to ask. Good wings too. They will get future business.
And I dunno if it was related but Peralta looked almost ready to eat Bassitt alive. Just missed the hung changeup right before he was dead on the inside fastball.

It makes no sense to keep Barreto on the roster but not give him multiple ABs in games like this or Sunday’s. (Yes, maybe could have ended that sentence earlier.)
@andeux They must think somebody values Barreto the way Billy did at the time of the Donaldson trade or close thereto, so they see December value? I doubt it but maybe their calculations show keeping him as good value for a roster spot for 1.5 more months.
No one could possibly value him that highly now that he’s 24, has never hit in the majors (albeit without much in the way of opportunity) and is out of options. At some point, they’re going to have to either trade him for next to nothing (like Mateo, who was in the same situation) or try to get him through waivers.
From reading SuSlu’s periodic insights on Barreto, my sense is that there’s quite a bit of consternation in the org about Barreto (there’s a faction that believes in him, there’s another that doesn’t) which leads to this weird purgatory that he’s in. It seems like he’s constantly on the verge of an opportunity before something immediately pulls the rug out from under him:
Opportunity – Immediate loss of opportunity:
Lowrie leaves – Profar acquired
Olson injured – Morales acquired
Profar sucks – Barreto sucks for a couple games, Profar starts again
Profar leaves – Kemp acquired
Main right handed 2B platoon option (zomg best opportunity yet) – Pinder starts instead
My personal sense is that he’s a guy who’ll only come close to realizing his potential on a team willing to give him a couple season’s worth of full time play (see Renato Nunez), and the A’s will never be willing/able to let him do that.
The universe is conspiring to keep me stuck at home no matter what…Hawaii cancelled, Mt Rainier cancelled, now Tahoe hanging by an increasingly frayed thread. Thank goodness there are live sports on all day long.
Unless the A’s get smoked out (so to speak) at the Coliseum tonight.

I think we had this conversation before in a similar circumstance. Man, I was out for a couple hours and *cough* the smoke *cough* got rapidly worse over that time. My kitchen smoke alarm might go off any minute now.
Purpleair now shows 250-300 AQI (very unhealthy, moving into hazardous) at S. Tahoe.
Bay area has improved a bit: < 100 (moderate) in Berkeley, still 140 near the Coliseum.
Checking back to the 2018 Big Game thread, the Pac-12 guideline is:
If there is substantive evidence that the AQI will remain consistently above 200 for the majority of a competition, that competition should be postponed, cancelled, rescheduled or relocated.
Looks like 160s at game time in East Oakland and Alameda. 190s in my neighborhood. Oof, there’s one near Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains that’s over 700.
It’s interesting to watch the map. The peninsula (except some of SF) has largely cleared out, as has the other side of the hills, while things have gotten a little worse in the inner east bay as the smoke has gotten trapped by the hills.
That was often the local dynamic during previous smoky periods, inner east bay better than others in the AMs, lingering worse air into the PMs.
Such a freak thing, in more than 30 years I’ve lived here there’s been maybe four serious lightening storms, and this is the first in the new climate change/drought era.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
We go through this every year, anywhere from 5 to 15 days. It seems like the smoke settles to the ground overnight so early morning is the worst. Our notorious afternoon wind doesn’t clear it out the way one might think; it usually just brings in more smoke.
Purple Air is a great example of crowdsourcing’s best and worst. Huge data set is instructive, huge outliers are common. I always assume someone’s idling a diesel or smoking a cigarette near those 400+ sites.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
There are some outliers like that that stand out, but overall they seem to be pretty low noise, on the order of a few points.
Earlier today from the 30 or so sensors in Berkeley you could see the clear gradient of readings near 80 from all the ones closest to the bay increasing to around 120-130 from all the ones near the hills. And the same thing on a larger scale on the peninsula – very clear around San Mateo increasing to around 200 near San Jose.
Friend of mine had to evacuate from Bonny Doon late Tuesday night. Haven’t heard many details, but it sounds like he is legitimately worried that his house will be gone.
It only pays 3:2 that whoever lives on this property has been a client of mine at one point of another
I truly detest 2020. Now my beloved alma mater @ucsc has been evacuated, as one of the >300 fires in California caused by lightning strikes is roaring through the redwoods, just about 2 miles from the center of campus. It's 0% contained. MORE pic.twitter.com/5dMcE5xhdN
FSU, if you’re still thinking about Bliss, bring your gas grill. As of today, no wood or charcoal fires, period, for the rest of the summer, and gas would also be banned during “Red Flag Warnings” which are fairly common especially in the afternoon and early evening hours. We’ve been fortunate so far with only smoke and no actual significant local fires, but tick tick tick…
I am a proud American who only grills on charcoal or wood. Gas is for commie satanists who Q warns about.
We haven’t cancelled yet because we don’t have to until 24 hours in advance, but it seems super unlikely. We’ve booked a night in Van Damme on Mendocino coast instead.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
CalFire admits in presser this morning that they have NO resources to fight this. Like, NONE. Guess why? Bc the prison populations, who have for decades been California’s primary firefighter hand-crews on wildfires, are too sick with Covid to go. https://t.co/ZZKIpsN5lc
Longtime Cincinnati Reds announcer Thom Brennaman was caught on a hot mic saying “one of the fag capitals of the world.” He is currently announcing the second game of the Reds’ doubleheader against Kansas City. pic.twitter.com/Uwz07eRIKv
I mean they’ve got the St. Louis gun brandishers and the supposedly libeled private high school counter-protestor. They could really use a anti-gay bigot to round out the cancel culture program.
Fox pulls him off the NFL, but I’m mostly noticing that all these years later ESPN still can’t tell Billy Bean from Billy Beane (twice, so not a typo).
Billy Beane, MLB’s ambassador for inclusion, called Brennaman’s use of the slur “disheartening” in a statement Thursday and noted “MLB’s zero-tolerance policy for harassment, discrimination, or bias toward the LGBTQ+ community or person at any time.”
“Last night is a difficult reminder that there is still much work to do,” Beane said. “We will pause for a moment, and utilize this incident as a learning opportunity for every one of our stakeholders.”
His dad could be pretty obnoxious too (example). I was listening to a Reds game one night and suddenly Marty made some absurd right-wing comment that had nothing to do with the game. I don’t have much reason to listen to Reds games anyway and didn’t, after that.
I think the Pedroia doll is probably still in the house in some box somewhere. Come to think of it, that could totally be a cursed object that is responsible for *gestures around at 2020*.
A more positive trend is that my wife completely gave up on the Red Sox when they traded Mookie this offseason.
That statue is pretty awesome though. Cincinnati really leans into the Rome connection, which is funny because Cincinnati is pretty insignificant. We are a “City of Seven Hills” except that there is still disagreement about *which* seven hills that actually refers to (wikipedia seems to think it’s a bit more settled).
The park that the statue is located in is great. Really nice overlook with views of the Ohio River.
I don’t see how Kansas City could be a “capital”. It looks like there’s maybe one block in the Power & Light District, adjacent to the (fairly) new arena, and a few others scattered about.
Maybe. My dad and I were driving down the street one day and he looks at a street sign and says “Well there’s Martin Luther Coon Boulevard, ha ha ha.” I don’t know why he thought I would like that comment, but I guarantee he will not repeat that mistake.
“I made a comment earlier tonight that I guess went out over the air that I am deeply ashamed of,” Brennaman said. “If I have hurt anyone out there, I can’t tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart I’m so very, very sorry. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith.”
After calling a home run that happened in the midst of his statement, he continued.
“I don’t know if I’m going to be putting on this headset again,” Brennaman said. “I don’t know if it’s going to be for the Reds. I don’t know if it’s going to be for my bosses at Fox.
“I want to apologize for the people who sign my paycheck, for the Reds, for Fox Sports Ohio, for the people I work with. For anybody that I’ve offended here tonight, I can’t begin to tell you how deeply sorry I am.
“That is not who I am and never has been, and I’d like to think maybe I could have some people that can back that up. I am very, very sorry and I beg for your forgiveness.”
I also think Jeff is wrong on this. Using the word strengthens the point.
I took down my original tweet. While I used the slur in an effort to illustrate the awfulness and severity of Brennaman's use, it was unnecessary, wrong and a mistake I won't make again. I'm sorry for being so cavalier with words. They matter. Always. And I owed everyone better. https://t.co/Rrie0iGwRL
Calcaterra followed suit in his newsletter. I agree with you that it strengthens the point, but maybe I would feel different if it was aimed at me? I dont know.
I don’t think it’s even about strengthening the point or whatever. He is a journalist and was reporting what Brennaman said, which is the story. It’s absurd that he deleted it and apologized, and it’s absurd an absurd norm to have journalists use euphemisms in place of direct quotes.
I have the same reaction. It’s usually on my radar in the context of teaching famous lawsuits about the use of slurs / defamation, where the teacher says the word and a student complains. Often the word starts with “N” because that’s what makes the decision important.
Here, what the guy said matters and I definitely wondered the first article I read. For example, there are “gay slurs” that I could understand an older guy making given the lines of jock-banter have legitimately moved, and others that just mean you’re an asshole. Knowing this was the latter is important news.
"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want"
I noticed that Grossman is consistently using a leg kick this year, but judging from his 2019 highlight video (yes, Robbie Grossman has a highlight video on Youtube) it doesn’t look like he had one last year. Maybe that explains the power production?
The young fellow who’s calling balls and strikes is doing a decent job. Grossman was mad because he got two pitches in almost exactly the same spot, with the first called a ball and the second being a backwards K, but it looked like the first one should have been called a strike.
When there’s an actual crowd I find it the other way around. Too much drumming on TV; I hear more drumming on TV than I do when I’m sitting in the Coliseum. Radio does a better job of putting that in the background. I suspect TV puts an extra effects mic somewhere out toward the outfield.
To my eye Laureano has improved his CF routes a lot. Looks very comfortable. Plays a little deeper, reacts a tic later, makes almost all the plays in stride.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
The 3 batter minimum saved us from Diekman there. He may have still gotten the last out but it probably would’ve been a wilder journey than Yusmeiro’s one pitch for the 3rd out.
They’ve crossed too many lines in the sand, Rubicons, bridges too far, clearly there won’t ever be a “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last” moment, but holy fucking shit GOP is there nothing you won’t denounce?
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
*Great Basin Brewing in Sparks did a Rauchbier for a while. I tried one and it was just overpowering. So bad I’d like to try another one to see if it matches my memory, but they don’t currently brew it.
Kris Kobach is the general counsel of the Build the Wall PAC that Steve Bannon was just arrested for being involved in as chairman. The advisory board includes Erik Prince, former CO congressman Tom Tancredo, Sheriff Dave Clarke and former pitcher Curt Schilling.
In today's cancel culture I am expecting an insane overreaction to this mistake. I can tell you that Thom Brennaman is one of the nicest and most thoughtful men I have known. His father is the very same.
Coliseum AQI looking like it’s about 110 this afternoon so we’re good to endure a Manaea start. 180 up here; I haven’t even been out the front door today.
It cleared up briefly here. Around 30 when I came back from the store, so I opened up a couple of windows. Half an hour later it’s back at 60, and windows closed.
A’s 2020 ratings to date: Multimedia growth across all platforms 44% in year-to-year HH ratings growth (2nd best in the league), up 86% season-to-date (best in MLB) & remains baseball's No. 1 team podcast, downloads up 286% compared to 2019 YTD.
Per purpleair in Berkeley today the air quality started out not-too-awful and got better and better all day, greens and yellows at 4pm, but has spiked up sharply in last 2 hours. Coliseum the same recent trend, at worse levels.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
It’s the kind of thing which could be cool if used sparingly…random cutout appearances in the stands, “Hot dog” call sprinkled in among fan noise. But like the Holy Toledo sign it was destined to be overused and ruined quickly.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
I’ve seen a bunch of 3B catches crashing into walls, tarps, bullpens mounds. I’ve never seen a guy running full speed away from the infield dive like Superman and manage to snag a ball he can’t see in the flailing webbing of his glove. And I still haven’t, but today I saw the possibility.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
Late in the game Ken and Vince talked about how the air quality seemed to have worsened as the game proceeded. East Oakland/East End Alameda look to be about 145-150 on the AQI as the game ended.
PurpleAir showing AQI in East Oakland/Alameda a fair bit worse than when I checked around this time yesterday, up in the 150s, and as noted yesterday it deteriorated during the game. Tahoe isn’t great in the 130s, but after the last couple days it’s more like a haze rather than discernible smoke.
It’s striking how quickly the changes come. Our air had been bad all day, 150s to 180s maybe, then about 90 minutes ago the levels plummetted to below 25 on the sensors throughout the Berkeley flatlands. Opened up the windows, enjoyed 45 minutes or so of fresh air, then all the sensors spiked up and continue to do so.
"Kraut will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no kraut."
At least today I’ve been able to get out and get a few miles in without feeling like it would make me sick, as was the case yesterday and the day before. So frustrating to waste nice summer days, but as mentioned somewhere above it’s something we deal with at some point just about every summer.
Bob Melvin says the A’s rely on their medical staff to make the call in air quality and the AQI hasn’t been close to postponing game yet. He believes number would be in 200s.
Heh. I am sorry you folks are dealing with this, my brother and mom still live in SC county and were already having a rough time as it is given everything. Like someone else said, it’s pretty crazy/sad that these are virtually an annual occurrence now.
There was a thread on Reddit a few days ago on how you could have a 2020 calendar spread with a different disaster each month, sigh.
About 9:00 last night, we starting going back up because the wind had died down, and right now we’re in the mid 160’s. We’re very close to Moffett Field, so we benefit from being close to the bay, for both the temperature and the wind.
Hasn’t helped much over the last week, though. FK August.
Think of the AQI as a yardstick that runs from 0 to 500. The higher the AQI value, the greater the level of air pollution and the greater the health concern. For example, an AQI value of 50 or below represents good air quality, while an AQI value over 300 represents hazardous air quality.
Jays-Rays just featured one of the more maddening overturns I’ve seen. Lourdes Gurriel was going to be out at the plate but somehow flipped himself into the air and over the catcher’s glove mid-slide to touch home. Called safe, every replay seemed to show no tag, and reversed to an out.
Ok, I just realized the Dbacks no longer have purple as a team color but whatever.
I like their deep red and black combo, feels right for the desert southwest.
I am not offended by that inning.
Purple is the only color to whip our ass so far.
I don’t even like “BLM” on the back of the mound. No commercial logos please. (Lost cause, I know.)
The roof is closed, Chris.
Good thing, it’s 111° in Phoenix right now.
a bassit kind of start
Huh, I thought it was closed – looks like it’s actually open, at least now. Which could explain the current predicament.
Really? Guys are in maska and sleeves. Maybe the AC is on as well (America!)
Yeah they showed a shot of the roof open (gorgeous sunset, etc). Maybe someone’s done their homework on Bassitt.
I seem to remember they would run the AC all day to cool it down and then open up. But my only trup there was like 15 yrs ago or so.
Nick Ahmed is going to kill the A’s this week. book it
Smart to pitch around him for Calhoun instead.
2 outs man on 1st is a pretty dumb time to bunt, no matter how fast you are.
Damn it ed.

Damnit Ed
Good to see Melvin pickin’ Machin.
Drink if Vince and or glenn say “high wire act”
I’m at a sports bar in Reno after drive from Portland (nearly ten hours). Bartender wearing A’s cap, A’s on three TVs without my having to ask. Good wings too. They will get future business.
Sounds as perfect as it gets without an Awful-Awful.
The game needed to get better and it did just as I arrived at home.
This is the most pitches you could expect without getting a baserunner
Ray thinks Allen’s pitch calls are screwing up Bassitt’s mojo.
And I dunno if it was related but Peralta looked almost ready to eat Bassitt alive. Just missed the hung changeup right before he was dead on the inside fastball.
Falling behind early..weve got them right where we want them.
this is still a no hitter, yeah?
Bassitt only had 4 walks this season, already has 3 tonight.
I would like some hits now.
ask for runs
One is part way to some.
Two is some!
ok. this is not the A’s night
That’s the two ugliest plays of the year right there, back to back.
Stupid annoying inning
Fernando Tatis Jr is crazy good. I can’t believe he was once traded for the shell of James Shields.
Its still another inning or so until we wake up
Grossman is determined to have a lot of us eating crow topped with Kraut.
I’m ok living in this world where Grossman is good.

How did Barreto get to 2B? Are we in extra innings?
He may honestly have the most tying and/or go ahead runs scored on the team.
You’re stuck with the LOOGY now, Arizonans.
That’s a quality mustache though.
So who’s soul do we have to give up at some point for this?
The ghosts of playoffs past present and future.
dammit bob why didn’t you have him bunt
Did FSU forget to turn off the TV in the 9th?
no need for him to turn it off, the dye(kman) is cast
I’m riding this one out eyes open.
Honestly, I’m ok with 3-1 during the suspension.
Giants are going to the bottom of the 9th up 1 against the slegnA. Looks like Gott is coming in.
LaStella 2 run walk off home run. Gott is officially broken.
Gott in Himmel, he’s done it again …
ok bob, I guess.
Lot of trust in Diebbman, haha.
Yep. He’s my most hated A. Though KD is closing right on in.
Oh well. Good effort.
meh. didn’t deserve to win
Ahreed with NM above. Happy with 3-1, and we shouldnt have even got as close as we did.
oh trevor gott
Oh my Gott…
Gott’s Roadkill?
Bob, did we learn not to play the infield in in the 6th down by 1?
Don’t swing 3-0 when your team is way ahead has to be the very stupidest unwritten rule. I’m supposed to allow you a Gentleman’s Meatball because your team is having a bad day?
You can’t bunt against the shift to break up a no-hitter (or in a blowout) is still stupider.
At least there we have a benefit for the fans: No hitters are cool. There’s nothing cool about 3-1 counts.
My T-shirt disagrees
I already do. I am the pitcher, though.
Live life like first base is open and you don’t have to give in.
Ooh, I like that. But does it come in green and gold?
Doesn’t look like it, no.
When we just saw a team come back from 5 in the 9th I dont see any reason you should stop swinging away. You just dont know.
Yeah – the corollary would be that the team that’s down big has to stop trying to come back.
I have thought about that before-is there any point where there is a strategic value in just forfeiting? Save an inning or 2 of arms, give everyone a bit of rest..
I like that HOFer and famous old white guy Johnny Bench just shut this down.
Hard to imagine that manager lasts long.
These Arizona caps look extremely minor league.
I’m more partial to light blue than most people, but why?
I like the light blue. It’s just the image of a snake with a baseball in its mouth that screams AA team.
Vogt has had a pretty good career for a guy who got his first major league hit at 28.
Jesus, figure it the FK out.
He did not.
Really glad we rushed him back for this.
His back or whatever the original ailment was can’t possibly be right yet. He probably figured he could pitch through it.
It’s Arizona, so might as well work on some things.
I’m having a hard time seeing the benefit of leaving him in there any longer.
My power is OK but Internet is out, so no video. Sounds like a blessing in disguise.
If you decide to go for a walk instead, be careful.
I do walk over there in the winter (flat area, easy to navigate when icy).
I hate chipmunks and squirrels anyway. They’re cute until they get inside your garage and scratch holes in the drywall and tear up the insulation for their nests.
I did not know we were playing early. Which may be the 1 thing Frankie and I have in common.
We’ll be testing a bunch of those Unwritten Rules in this one.
Sometimes, men have to die.
well, lou, this is your game to win
I didn’t miss seeing Calhoun tbh.

I am still concerned about the offense, they can’t seem to figure out Kevin Gausman, dylan bundy or mike Cuellar
They jump all over the worstmistakes. But at some point having your #3 hitter hitting .172 is not a great look.
To give the A’s extra time to make use of my mojo I’m going to go ahead and turn this game off in the 6th inning.
That was a pile of pig manure stinking after three hours in Arizona heat. If you happened to think this was a night game, well done.

Find the worst part of this message challenge!
i get your point about how she sounds.

cascading system failures is the key ingredient of catastrophe.
Too late to get him a speaking slot at the RNC?
How so?
I mean they’ve got the St. Louis gun brandishers and the supposedly libeled private high school counter-protestor. They could really use a anti-gay bigot to round out the cancel culture program.
All the hits, guns, god and gays!
He’s also either #2 or #3 on the Fox NFL PxP roster. You can’t do that, even at Fox.
Fox pulls him off the NFL, but I’m mostly noticing that all these years later ESPN still can’t tell Billy Bean from Billy Beane (twice, so not a typo).
Literally saying the quiet part out loud.
Thom Brennaman only ever says things loud.
His dad could be pretty obnoxious too (example). I was listening to a Reds game one night and suddenly Marty made some absurd right-wing comment that had nothing to do with the game. I don’t have much reason to listen to Reds games anyway and didn’t, after that.
Cincinnati has quietly been home for many years to some of the most virulent fundamentalists anywhere. Marge Schott of course, but also Mapplethorpe’s Perfect Moment and this lovely gift from Benito Mussolini:
Sure, the negatives are counterbalanced by colin. That’s something.
CapitOLINe wolf.
COINCIDENCE?? i think not.
I think those same devious fuckers tricked me into their credit cards.
If Mrs. colin still has that horrifying Dustin Pedroia doll it tilts back the other way though.
That statue is both (a) hella fascist and (b) pretty cool.
Stolen! Only four paws and two suckling twins remain.
I really want to know which city he was talking about. I’m hoping it’s one of the longshots on the board.
I don’t see how Kansas City could be a “capital”. It looks like there’s maybe one block in the Power & Light District, adjacent to the (fairly) new arena, and a few others scattered about.
Although somebody pointed out this clip…
This is zero chance that movie could be made today.
things go sideways in november and next year they make that blazing saddlews TV show they piloted.
Here is the thing, there were 6? or so people to whom he thought he was talking.
If I’m the reds, they all get a talking to. I am betting thom thought he was in good company
Maybe. My dad and I were driving down the street one day and he looks at a street sign and says “Well there’s Martin Luther Coon Boulevard, ha ha ha.” I don’t know why he thought I would like that comment, but I guarantee he will not repeat that mistake.
This seems…lame, for me particularly the parts I bolded.
I also think Jeff is wrong on this. Using the word strengthens the point.
Yes, this.
We will see how this plays out on a bigger stage sometime in the next few months when Trump inevitably calls Kamala a fucking n-word b*tch.
I didn’t understand any of what Dallas said about the keys to the game.
I have Ken and Vince on but would kind of like to know what “Boogie Down” and “Rattle the Cattle” were about.
Boogie down is Luzardo keeping the ball down, Rattle the Cattle was something to do with the bullpen without Burch.
Between that and his attempt to push his slogan through his face mask, dude is… trying too hard.
thanks for leading off locastro
I’m watching tonight I looked up on the batted ball by semien, and thouoght “dammit right to the fielder” turned out that was the umpire
You wouldn’t purposely hit Canha to load the bases and bring up the dreaded Robbie Grossman.
Pick your poison.
MVP MVP
Pleasantly surprised at runs actually scoring here.
Some hero has taped an A’s mask onto cutout Marlins Man’s face.
And the crowd gives Ramon a huge ovation on his return to the Coliseum!
marvin hudson gave him a fist pump. seemed weird they went straight to commercial after that
I noticed that Grossman is consistently using a leg kick this year, but judging from his 2019 highlight video (yes, Robbie Grossman has a highlight video on Youtube) it doesn’t look like he had one last year. Maybe that explains the power production?
The A’s beating up on a young pitcher who was stifling other teams seems backwards.
The young fellow who’s calling balls and strikes is doing a decent job. Grossman was mad because he got two pitches in almost exactly the same spot, with the first called a ball and the second being a backwards K, but it looked like the first one should have been called a strike.
Not a bad defensive top of the 6th there.
The fake crowd noise on the radio seems even louder and more synthetic tonight.
A’s stadium is worse on the radio. TV is fine. I think they radio people need to fix the levels
Yusmeiro for Mayor!
The 3 batter minimum saved us from Diekman there. He may have still gotten the last out but it probably would’ve been a wilder journey than Yusmeiro’s one pitch for the 3rd out.
This would be Chapman’s first game without a K this year.
Loading the bases for Piscotty? Bold strategy there Cotton.
They’ve crossed too many lines in the sand, Rubicons, bridges too far, clearly there won’t ever be a “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last” moment, but holy fucking shit GOP is there nothing you won’t denounce?
Neither had a chance to make the play but some superlative big league hoses on display from Murphy and Ramon this inning.
Yay, a boring win.
yay
I love boring 3-4 run wins where you look up and you think “wait-it’s the 8th inning?”. Much better for my heart health.
Bartender, a round of Rauchbiers* for the house!
*Great Basin Brewing in Sparks did a Rauchbier for a while. I tried one and it was just overpowering. So bad I’d like to try another one to see if it matches my memory, but they don’t currently brew it.
Curt!
Advisory boards bring in people with relevant knowledge and experience, so I guess Curt did his job.
Meanwhile, back on the baseball side.
They’re probably members of the same klavern.
I’m guessing Curt was regarded as too much of a rube to get a cut of the money.
I wouldn’t be shocked if he had to make a donation to get the board seat.
Hauled in by the postal police on a boat floating in Long Island Sound. The Steve Bannon story is just spectacular.
god i hope he looked like johnny fever running from the phone cops.
I like how all indictments of this kind allege that the money was used to “fund the defendant’s lavish lifestyle.”
I like how he explicitly admits it (played off as deadpan) on video last June.
The existence of that video is so FKing insane
Thing that could never have happened under any other administration, but barely registers now, number 41709873
It will be nice to see Bannon in jail, but it’s hard to dredge up much sympathy for the “victims” in this case.
The unending gullibility of the GOP-teriat never ceases to stun.
Color me jealous. Of both numbers.
We have 300 and three kids I can’t send outside.
If someone in addition to the A’s could beat the Astros once in a while that would be great.
They put up 10 runs today on German Marquez without Bregman, Yordan, and Brantley. Really annoying
Podcast Champions 2020
Per purpleair in Berkeley today the air quality started out not-too-awful and got better and better all day, greens and yellows at 4pm, but has spiked up sharply in last 2 hours. Coliseum the same recent trend, at worse levels.
When asked what one thing he’d improve in baseball, Dallas on pregame just said he’d end all broadcast blackouts.
Chapman unimpressed with himself after that tater, makes me expect more to come.
Et voila.
After series facing a Solano and a Peralta I expect the Angels will sign a guy named MacArthur or San Pablo by game time tomorrow.
Rangers just gave up another grand slam to the Padres (4 in 4 games so far).
Emilio Pagan has turned back into a pumpkin.
Hold onto yer butts. Inning #4.
So, I am reasonably sure Nancy Pelosi is in DC, yeah? Why were there goons in black SUVs outside her house just now? is she in SF?
The Tom Hanks thing is just annoying.
It’s the kind of thing which could be cool if used sparingly…random cutout appearances in the stands, “Hot dog” call sprinkled in among fan noise. But like the Holy Toledo sign it was destined to be overused and ruined quickly.
I nominate Matt Olsen for President of Oakland!
Hey, KD with a couple of hard hits today!
.247 here we come!
The Giants knocked out the slegnA starter after 1.1. This should bode well for us tomorrow.
How far are we going to push our luck with Manaea?
[Edit: pulled as I hit post on this comment]
don’t break matt
oh shit oh shit oh shit
petit is up? why?
I am glad Chapman didn’t get hurt as he attempted what might have been the best catch in third baseman history.
I dunno. Chavez tarp dive is up there.
Only one I can remember is this one. I think Chapman’s would have been cooler though:
those uniforms were hideous. I suppose that’s why the nationals current uniform are so bland
donaldson?
the chavez catch i remember was into the dugout.
Yes. Right.
he’s better than you remember!
Kotsay is first base coaching, also looks like he’s in disguise as an Ishtar cosplayer.
I think I’m starting to see the smoke on the broadcast.
fire in the sky.
We all came out to Oakland
On the Lake Merrit shoreline
To play a season in a pando
We didn’t have much time
Matt Chapman and those mothers
Were the best team around
But some stupid caught the Covid
And shut the whole damned thing down
Late in the game Ken and Vince talked about how the air quality seemed to have worsened as the game proceeded. East Oakland/East End Alameda look to be about 145-150 on the AQI as the game ended.
challenge AB for Khris
triple or a home run first for Khris?
Yeah, that’s gone if it’s old KD.
I thought we were rid of calhoun and cron
I would like about 4 more runs before Diekman faces the top of the order.
murphy has an 8 game hitting streak?
Diekman making it very hard to complain about him.
Where there’s a will there’s a way. And I always have a will.
Looks like Chappy’s ok.
Holy moly did he kill that ball.
Is there someone else that can pitch? Or is it one of those, well, he is getting hot so we are using hendriks?
We need to score one or two more here. Bob’s always brought in his closer with a 4 run lead.
Barreto hitless 2020 dream lives.
yay
Also, in case you were wondering, elephant shit is not a cure for COVID-19.
But enough about the GOP platform…
Current playoff picture would have us hosting Buffalo in the first round.
Link I’ve been meaning to grill for you FKers for a few days.
MLB affirms Roe v. Wade!
At least today I’ve been able to get out and get a few miles in without feeling like it would make me sick, as was the case yesterday and the day before. So frustrating to waste nice summer days, but as mentioned somewhere above it’s something we deal with at some point just about every summer.
Hey, LC, way to lean into the air quality angle when naming the thread
We were up around 200 in my neighborhood of Kentuckyvale until about 2:30, when it plummeted into the low teens. Right now, we’re at zero.
We’ve been over 300 repeatedly. Which is great because it’s hot too.
About 9:00 last night, we starting going back up because the wind had died down, and right now we’re in the mid 160’s. We’re very close to Moffett Field, so we benefit from being close to the bay, for both the temperature and the wind.
Hasn’t helped much over the last week, though. FK August.
I have a cousin in Palo Alto who said his house was 560 this morning
That sounds… bad
not bad. worse.
https://cfpub.epa.gov/airnow/index.cfm?action=aqibasics.pmhilevels
Jays-Rays just featured one of the more maddening overturns I’ve seen. Lourdes Gurriel was going to be out at the plate but somehow flipped himself into the air and over the catcher’s glove mid-slide to touch home. Called safe, every replay seemed to show no tag, and reversed to an out.
I thought they just upheld bad calls, not overturn good calls
