The A’s now begin a stretch with 18 of the next 23 away from the Coliseum. This 8-game road trip does get broken up with 3 over the weekend in San Francisco, between these games in Anaheim and a couple in Phoenix. I thought we were trying to minimize the travel but whatever.
A win tonight would make this the third-best 17-game start in Oakland history (16-1 in 1981 and 14-3 in 1978). Three other times they have been 12-4 but on each of those occasions they went to 12-5. A 10-game winning streak would be #9 of that length or better; being even more optimistic, 11 games would be #6 and 12 games would be #3.
The Scioscias are scheduled to throw three right-handers.
Tonight at 6:40: Manaea (can we get more than 3 good innings please?) vs. Julio Teheran
Tuesday at 6:40: Fiers vs. Dylan Bundy
Wednesday matinee at 1:10: Bassitt vs. Griffin Canning
Stupid Scioscias make Aces go radio only.
do VPNs work for this kinda thing?
Yup
I havent been able to get it to work with MLB. But Im also lazy and not tech savvy.
I used to use it on an old laptop and cable (s?) it up to a teevee.
I’ve been using this one, but I’m lucky enough to get it expensed through work. It’s kinda pricey otherwise, and I think there are some cheaper options that should still be fine. This one is incredibly easy to use though.
i went 3-year on nord.
I actually have a friend who let me use his Nord.
But now when I try to log in on my home laptop to MLB.TV it does nothing. Tried Firefox and Chrome, cleared cache and cookies, tried incognito mode and so far nothing. I quick look through Reddit suggested so refresh everything youtube video but I need to backup photos and docs before I try that. But thanks to all you FKers for the kick in the pants.
So spent most of last night’s game doing a “reset” on the old laptop. I still cant log into MLB.TV or even MLB.com. It feels like a simple cookie issue but it isnt. Something works because if I put in the wrong password I get the “pls enter a different password” message. But if I enter the right info it just basically reloads the login page.
I may search the net a little today but I would be radio likely anyways today at work so the problem wont bother me again for a week or 2.
Does it work in incognito mode?
No. I even logged out from my work laptop and phone to make sure it wasnt some random “you cant be logged in at multiple spots” issues.
disable your extensions for a minute.
for me, when the page says something is there (a media player or fill-in form of some kind) but i’m not seeing it, it’s usually because adblock, privacybadger, ublock, etc are working too well.
That makes sense, though weird it would only do it on the old as dirt laptop. Thanks!
I have multiple browsers on each machine. Certain sites just don’t like certain browsers, and maybe your settings therein as AV suggests. A’s Cast is one of them (and that’s an MLB site if you’re not streaming through iHeart); clicking the Play button does nothing in Chrome but it works fine in Firefox. I also keep one browser with minimal security settings and no extensions; this comes in handy when things like tracking cookies are required, e.g. the “Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Shopping” portal where tracking is required to get credit for frequent flyer miles.
Firefox won’t show me the standings on mlb.com (though it’s fine with video, which has often been problematic).
That one is probably an ad-blocker issue.
Standings work for me in firefox, but I have my ad-blocker off for MLB.com.
When I need one I use Windscribe. I’m sure it’s not the best for truly necessary hiding, but the free version is 10 GB/month and unlimited is $2/month. And it’s fast.
I really don’t like angels games. I get too invested
No beer in the parking lot makes FSU go crazy.
we can sit in the parking lot at anaheim stadium
drinking beer
smoking pot
snorting coke
and then driiiiiive, drive over 55.
it’s a sammy hagar weekend!
I used to drive over the 55 all the time. There are a lot of bridges over freeways in Orange county.
I think driving over the 57 is more convenient in Anaheim, though
Also I was thinking just yesterday eagerly awaiting my mom in the Big A parking lot. She had dropped my brother and I off and I wanted to get home to catch the “ON TV” special that featured live concert footage of the Police and the GoGos
We made it home on time
on those freeways, you’re lucky if you can drive double digits mph.
my big A parking lot memories are all about cooking breakfast in a bag at the boy scout fair.
This winning streak coincided exactly with my vacation (the A’s lost the last game I watched), so the omens for tonight seem bad.
Gonna be thinking of Vince eating his sad lonely cheese pizza during the call tonight.
What are those sausages they sell at the stadium? Those were good.
Probably Saag’s, which does not exist anymore.
I leave for a few years and the sausages disappear?
[sagh]

Doordash should be showing up with some Whoppers from the Hegenberger Burger King about now.
Go Giants.
The one fking time I’m remotely interested in them being successful…
Useless.
Oh hey, they finally got a hit.
I lack Soaker’s deep mlb google skills, but I have to think that a coach not making obscene slurs and instigating violence on the field is an actually written rule.
as would be leaving the dugout?
This looks like a good game for researching rules instead of watching. It’s not Googling, it’s flipping through the rule book.
That one is of course bent routinely, especially in reference to umpires.
As to Ed’s question:
Hosed down by Piscotty!
Also, TOOTBLAN ahead of a Trout AB, ouch.
No.
The bullpen is out there, Sean, and you’re about to become very familiar with it.
Argh. Manaea was actually looking ok until that center cut pitch to Rendon.
And now you can actually see the wheels coming off.
This isn’t going well
Thanks Albert.
Stop fking hitting our guys!!
Just score 15
They just might there are a lot of sweet swings goin in the lineup right now
Ken just described the rundown as a pickle as it was happening like a pro
Anaheim has the crowd noise perfect (oddly, as their actual crowds are awful). The key is a baseline buzz set at 1-3 or so, depending on situation, then modulated up to 4-5 in real time, then ratcheting up or down. The Coliseum doesn’t do the baseline well at all, then has only a handful of settings from there.
There aren’t any cutouts there, either. I’m neither here nor there on those but fully agree with you on the sound. The Coliseum is especially bad when the operator’s reaction isn’t in sync with the play.
oakland is really bad
Jesus Christ, Angels, speed it up!
What are, “things hospice nurses say,” Alex?
hey-o
8 players still below Mendoza in this game.
Fletcher is going to be the end of me.
Korach pauses during Burch Smith like he did during Seth Smith.
Scioscia is gonna be pissed about this sloppy catcher play
Thank you Scioscia for batting trout 2rd, btw
Well then
I’m liking this crush the snot out of everything Chapman.
Starting my “Burch Smith for the rotation” campaign
I’ll take one lawn sign and one bumper sticker please.
Nice K by Wendelken. Sometimes you have to throw a fucking strike.
This game is gonna take longer than Friday’s.
Question is whether Ed’s request that they “just score 15” will be enough.
score five more and limit trout to two more home runs and maybe.
That was a case where since there’s only one telecast with probably six cameras, it’s tough to get enough angles. Seemed safe to me but usually New York would have at least one more camera view on that play.
That’s a problem I think.
I’m fine with calls standing if they are close enough.
It would be better if they just didn’t review a lot of these calls at all, but the teams have less information as well, so we’re seeing challenges on a lot of plays that are inconclusive or even ones that were clearly correct.
I guess my position is pretending 2020 isn’t a thing.
Yes, agree
I’ve been keeping track and they’re actually using eight cameras: High home (main live play cam), low home, high first, low first, high third, low third, main CF camera (pitch cam) and a low CF they mainly use for close-ups. There’s also a fixed all-nine cam that the announcers in Oakland use for fielder positioning but that would almost never be useful for replays.
Have a night, Man Chap.
Chapman holy crap what a four innings.
God this Angels team is garbage.
Charitable scoring of a sacrifice fly benefits Canha on that one.
upton is not throwing matt out. he is pretty bad at everything but dingers
Only one more year of Pujols, but two of Upton.
And adel aint gonna DH anytime soon
I’ve just seen that one play. Is he always that bad at fielding?
Eric Longenhagen was on effectively wild friday and indicated he wasn’t good in the outfield. that was before the play in Texas
Its the prop plane noise in the background from anaheim or oakland?
Two hours to get to the bottom of the fourth.
outs please
We’re getting into Mengden and Trivino territory which is questioning my assumption that our bullpen can outperform theirs.
Only getting two outs from Wendelken means you pretty much have to use Mengden for multiple innings and hope for the best.
Wrong.
The fifth inning never comes.
Can we just skip murphy?
dammit
I believe the league has gone out of its way to limit time at the park. Why dont we just end this one right now?
Excellent idea.
Trivino against the heart of the order should be interesting.
Nice euphemism there.
They’ll probably need fresh arms after tonight so come on down to SJ, Lou.
Blackburn is on the taxi squad. Great. (Along with Kaprelian.)
We need to save a couple guys to get suspended for hitting Astros next time we see em.
I would rather trout homer than rendon
Oh Lou, you flew too close to the sun on wings of ribeye.
The way this game started, I would be happy to be tied in the 7th.
I look forward to seeing our “we have the lead” bullpen guys in the 8th.
Petit. I don’t know. This is the danger part of the order. Can’t always go back to this well
Gotta throw that one in the dirt, Yusmeiro.
Yes better to win this game in just nine innings.
Uhg, scioscia sciosciaing
Yuck
It’s disappointing to blow a 9-4 lead but the real problem is that Manaea simply has not put his team in a decent position in any of his starts this year.
Manaea keeps putting them in holes that are too tough to dig out of. 1-3 in his starts, 11-2 behind anybody else.
He just wants to make finding a spot for Puk easy.
Oh man Piscotty got a dream pitch and didn’t get it all.
I think the problem today was the Angels never quit.
I just hope Trout got it all out of his system. But Chappie didn’t.
At least Mengden will eat innings. Sean cant pitch poor AND only get through 2-3 innings. Not in this season.
Playoff hockey starts today! Here’s hoping for lots of sudden death OTs and Game 7s. The Sharks of course are nowhere near this party, so I’m rooting for Vancouver in the Western Conference bubble and whoever emerges from the Philly-Montreal series in the East.
As always, I’m surprised by hockey existing.
A 3 OT (and counting) game is a nice way to start.
Intermission right now, Columbus and Tampa heading into OT #5!
Manfred could solve this. Need to have one team play 5-on-3 for 5 minutes, then the other team gets its 5-on-3 chance.
I had been wondering, are they keeping the new extra innings rule for the postseason?
At this time, no, but the rules do change from week to week.
And the extra periods are only 14 minutes long.
Multipuck
Vancouver prevails over the evil St. Louis Blues and now faces the eviler Vegas Golden Knights in round two. The Philadelphia Flyers dispatched Montreal fairly easily and now advance to face the New York Islanders in a series where honestly the evil feels about even. Call it an evil push.
Vancouver and Philly both get Game 7s! Canucks today, Flyers tomorrow. The Vancouver series has been especially fun to watch, they’re down to their backup goalie, a rookie, from San Diego of all places, and he has totally stonewalled Vegas despite facing twice as many shots.
Defeat for both. The NHL Final Four is an unlikable bunch.
IMHO, the zipper pocket is much too high.
I think this is reasonable given everything
Classic Nightengale
Although It would be, not reasonable, but understandable and defensible and ultimately acceptable.
It’s really remarkable how often Nightengale confidently reports a scoop on Twitter that turns out to be wrong.
I was hoping for 5. Can’t say 6 is some egregious difference.
Cintron should have gotten the season, but 20 is a LOT better than I was expecting.
I would love to argue around the edges of a 6 game suspension in a 60 game season (is that a 16 game suspension? I am not good at math), but ultimately I don’t know if there is a benefit to that. What is up with Kelly’s appeal?
Cintron is better than expected, but still, he seems to be a problem employee
Damnit, I’d forgotten how shitty of a reporter Nightengale is.
I agree, five games for Ramon feels about as light a sentence as you could expect.
Yeah. Five (or the actual six) are on the low end of what I was expecting.
Still boggles the mind that Cintron was not ejected by the umps. Do most umps speak/understand Spanish?
The real question is whether he should serve it now or appeal.
As someone else said earlier, now is a pretty good time: Giants and Dbacks are the two bottom teams in the NL-W and Angels are the bottom team in the AL-W, so these are arguably the games we are most likely to win even without Ramon, plus the consequences for losing them are less than if playing someone like Houston. Also, the rest of the team seems to be healthy. The only reason not to serve it now is if you think there is a real chance of getting it reduced.
Also how quick can you get the appeal in. If I can appeal today and get it heard tomorrow it is worth the risk. But if it takes 7-10 days and you start risking games against better teams I would suck it up.
Kelly’s appeal is still pending, right?
As is ramon’s now
SuSlu just made it click. One of the tiebreakers is division record so missing the NL games is better if things are anywhere near equal.
Makes sense. I wonder if he does drop the appeal for the interleague stuff.
Harris for VP confirmed.
My support for the Biden ticket is reduced by this selection, as I think lowly of her. I am now only 100% certain to vote for him, down from 100%.
Same. Although I am going to push for Lorena Gonzalez as her replacement if elected.
Not Matt?
Welp, that was short lived
I think she was the right pick, and I’m very glad he didn’t overthink it. I’m also excited to finally have not only a California Democrat, but a Bay Area Democrat, on a presidential ticket. The time had come for that.
I’m actually excited about this pick, I think Harris is a bit riskier than Bass or RIce would have been, but that’s because she’s a much stronger politician than either of those, and we’ll need that skill in the years to come.
Riskier how?
Generally because she has a more prominent record for opposition to mine, and specifically the Willie Brown connections.
I’d rather take my chances with someone who has run and won multiple statewide campaigns and gone through at least the initial phase of a presidential run than a non-politician or a congressperson from a safe district. Obviously the scrutiny on her record will be higher now, but I trust Biden’s vetting team.
through twitter takes.
what? isn’t that how elections work?
I think it checks the do-no-electoral-harm requirement in that CA is not going to elect a GOP senator to fill her seat. I also think picking a woman (and woman of color) is admirable. It also doesn’t hurt my vote.
I just think Harris is not an impressive person. And to the extent we are anointing our next presidential candidate I wish it weren’t her.
I have personal reservations about her, I am privy to some gross violations during her time as AG and am a public defender who had to tell parents that it is a possibility that they will go to jail because their child, who they can’t control, isn’t going to school. I also defended people in her reign that went to prison for (admittedly repeatedly) selling small quantities of drugs to support their addiction.
That being said, she has said much better things as senator and on the trail, notwithstanding her terrible instincts for campaigning (like having the same busing position as biden and attacking him for it, or joking about marijuana and actually having prosecuted it and took no or against stances on legalizing).
I am as unenthusiastic as I could be, but resigned to never having good things.
Her inability to manage a campaign staff certainly is not indicative of her ability to manage an executive branch.
Say we get a 2010 type recovery (much harder now with the pandemic) and no major issues to rally the tea party or boogaloo’s her 2024 campaign is already on thin ice, If there isn’t an economic recovery and/or vaccine AND there is some dumb bengazi/ACA/bengazi issue energizing whatever the republicans are in 4 years, she is going to be in trouble if she repeats her 2020 campaign.
Agree with that. I think it is fine for purposes of winning this election, but I hate it from the perspective of her being a potential front-runner in 2024/28. I am not impressed by her on any level, and I think pretty much any of the other choices being floated would have made a better president. I think she is completely unprincipled and is not even a good politician. I voted for Loretta Sanchez…
She got the AG’s office to investigate Snachez supporters on suuuuuper flimsy grounds, and when SLF* pointed it out, SLF was taken off the assignment and it was transferred to the LA office.
*I don’t know if MikeA knows SLF is “special lady friend”
I remember being annoyed at shady stuff she was doing when she was AG, but I don’t really remember what any of it was anymore.
I vaguely recall working on something where she had some shady dealings with the Santa Clara County DA Rosen, who also seems shady.
this stuff is not public, My opinion is its par for the course with everyone at a national level to do shady. Sure there are some good eggs, but not a lot.
Yeah, fair enough.
She was also a shitty DA. She’s always been someone with no interest in doing the job in front of her well, and only an interest in the next step.
With politicians in particular, familiarity breeds contempt. It was a lot easier to love Ron Dellums when I was a DC activist than it was when I was an Oakland employee.
It’s a fair point, but her weaknesses haven’t exactly abated. Her primary campaign was a Hillary-esque cluster of mismanagement.
I like how she is taking credit starting a program for youth as DA when in actuality an existing program was renamed
(SOmething that happens with regularity as funding comes and goes)
My problem is that Warren is by far the most impressive person, and would be the best at actually being president. That said, she proved to be less good at campaigning than I hoped, and I hate creating a MA senate vacancy.
And she’ll be way too old in 4 or 8 years.
I don’t know who I’d want to elect in 4 or 8 years, but it damn sure isn’t Harris, and I could imagine a world in which someone like Rice was impressive enough to become that person. Either way, assuming he wins, Biden needs to do MUCH better than Obama at building a democratic bench.
Warren was obviously the best pick and telegraphed in 2016. You are right, I see noone for 2024
Inslee? But really its gonna be harris.
I don’t see it being Inslee. I could see it being someone like Duckworth, Mayor Pete or (at least pre-primary) Beto. The latter two would need serious experience-gaining positions in a Biden admin though.
I don’t understand what you mean by impressive.
I mean capable of doing the actual job of presidenting.
I am similarly meh on this ticket, but it was the obvious choice.
I would love Liz Warren, but she is not young, nor* a POC. Plus I think there is some question about getting a Dem replacement in MA.
Also like Julian Castro, but he is not a woman.
Abrams and Demings don’t have the national profile.
On the plus side, she is a good speaker/debater, is a Bay Area person, and is not Joe Lieberman.
meh
While I would’ve said this for just about anybody he picked, I would’ve preferred Susan Rice. Of course, a bag of shaved pubic hairs would still be a better VP than what we have now.
I’m hoping for an epic beatdown this fall by the D’s, just to force the GOP to face the fact that the tea-bagger/QAnon/anti-abortion route is not going to work anymore, and they need to come up with effective, attractive policies and people to recapture those of us in the middle.
Did you see I dr. K’d twice last night? first of the season
get a room you two!
but hang out in the one next to it.
A more elegant way to reference the incumbent is Vice President Huruhuru.
I’d drink that!
All I can think of now is the Curb Your Enthusiasm episode with the pubic hair and the nativity scene.
But is it not working? Trump still has like 90% approval among Rs.
The GOP needs to lose bad – I mean, like worse than Barry Goldwater 1964 bad – this year, or they run the risk of becoming a fringe party (they already are to some extent, given the slavish devotion to The Donald). There needs to be a viable opposition (this is true whoever is in charge) to prevent one side or the other going off the rails.
Sigh. I like Ike.
I really wanted Abrams or Warren, but I’m relieved it’s a woman of color. I was fearing that he was going to pick Whitmer.
With all the FK activity today I would have thought we traded Chappy for a pouch of Big League Chew. We havent even got to 1st pitch yet.
You didn’t hear about that? His failure to hit a 3rd HR yesterday made him expendable.
But also dropped his price from a dozen ketchup dispensers.
Pretty cool to watch MLB being played in Buffalo, but now I really want a Sahlen’s hot dog (from Ted’s).
This is weird
that is interfere, yeah?
Yeah. I have no idea how they called him out. I thought the rule is he gets 3rd automatically.
It’s like the Tejada play, but worse. (On that one, he got 3rd automatically, and would have gotten the benefit of doubt at home if he had tried to score, but forgot to try.)
I’m still mad at that call. Why not have someone just tackle the runner? He didn’t try for home, so he only gets 3b. Bullshit.
OK, they are saying in this case 2nd (the base he is already on) is the base he gets for free, and 3rd at his own risk (like Tejada). I still think the call was wrong though.
Weird rule, assuming explaination just now was correct. Umps rules runner had been interfered with, but still advances only at his own risk.
The Blue Jays seem to be similar to Buffalo’s other pro sports teams.
Are they hitting everything wide right?
asvd
They are mediocre in general, and in the first three innings they made an error, and had a bad call go against them.
When I went to that ballpark I knew enough to hit the Beef on Weck stand. No recollection of it; the ballpark was new (1990?) and it was a stop between Cooperstown and A’s @ Cleveland.
judos to MLB advanced media for the gameday background with the highway signs
FKwiz:
Who has the highest OPS on the team coming into tonight’s game?
Correct:
Grossman .941
Chapman .939
Laureano .897
Bundy wisely pitched around our best hitter.
Superstar.
A 60-game season gives him a chance to get something like “MVP-16” on his Baseball Reference page forever.
As many reservations as I have about Harris, seeing Barbara Lee overjoyed on the air with Rachel Maddow did make me feel a little more enthused.
Has LaStella been cupping?
Five or so decent innings from Fiers would be a big help tonight.
Early returns not promising.
Man Fiers was not going to throw Ohtani a fastball strike.
Fiers has the wildest swings of facial hair, not just of any pitcher, but of any human being of my acquaintance.
I am currently sporting my first mustache since bad-teen-mustache circa 1983.
My Dad has a family photo in his home computer workstation area which happened to be taken in the month when I tried that. I just cringe.
All of Bundy’s pitches look bad to me, yet he is striking everyone out.
His repertoire kinda reminds me of Ervin Santana’s who was basically unhittable against the A’s.
Vince with the momentary Bauncast turned a Chapman double into a flyout.
I’m listening to Terry Smith and Mark Langston, as I did last night. I tuned in A’s Cast after last night’s game and heard a Vince call on a home run, I think one of Chapman’s, that was just a disaster. It’s not the usual Vince-bashing, I just don’t think radio broadcasters can do an acceptable job calling off monitor so I plan on almost always using announcers who are at the park.
This was blacked out on MLB Network on my TV, but I can watch it on my DirecTV app on the same channel. Odd.
Fiers is pitching like a guy who knows he’s lost his already fringy out pitch and probably isn’t long for the majors if all he can throw is 88 mph fastballs in 2 strike counts.
So the hound, Frankie, Jesus, Mengden, ih.. is Joe Blanton a FA? Maybe Bartolo?

what’s up with puk?
I think I saw this week he is doing the Rich Harden memorial flat ground throwing but isnt even on the mound yet.
I would assume at this point we get him back for the bullpen, maybe.
Bundy is a rough surname. Al and Peg. Ted. Here in Nevada, Cliven, his son Ammon and family. Dylan has had a lot to overcome.
runs were fun. At least there are no orange county bastards in the stands to enjoy this
I am glad I was washing dishes. otherwise I would have typed “keeping fletcher o fer means you win right?”
what a cheapie and the double to lead off yesterday
The A’s are costing Moreno a fair amount on Fletcher’s 2021 salary.
Edit: Correction, actually not, I thought he had more service time.
hopefully it carries over and he has to raise beer prices
Just not parking, please. They are still at $10 which I think is the lowest for any on-site lot in MLB and maybe in any major league sport.
Davis cannot drive the ball. surely the A’s have noticed?
A shitty dreary game in a dark empty stadium, sort of fulfilling my worst fears about this baseball season. “Dismal” is generous for that one.
Davis:
1) do not play him
2) if you must: green light 0-1, 1-1, 2-1, or 0-2. 3-1 situational. red light all other counts
Lol somehow the Astros blew a 6-2 lead to the Giants late. And then our favorite extra innings punching bag Cy Sneed gave up the winning run in the 10th.
But how many HBPs?
Nate Silver’s presidential forecast now uses an “uncertainty” index with factors including “the volume of major news, as measured by the number of full-width New York Times headlines in the past 500 days.”
That’s quite a write-up. And obviously Nate and Co. are experts at their craft. But this part about “National Drift,” how much the overall national forecast could change between now and Election Day, feels awfully speculative.
National drift is calculated as follows:
Constant x (Days Until Election)^1/3 x Uncertainty Index
Including a factor for how easy/hard it is to vote in a state is interesting, though the COVI acronym (cost of voting index) is unfortunate. It also needs to be much more fine-grained that just at the state level, since the voter-suppressing states clearly do that in a deliberate, targeted way.
i’m riding whatever allan lichtman is driving this time.
Methodology aside, the visuals on the forecast are pretty wild.
Also, the examples of potential maps spit out by the forecast include one where Biden wins South Dakota, Alaska, Missouri, Mississippi, Kansas, Arkansas, Texas, and Georgia but loses Arizona.
Clippy, it turns out, was just ahead of its time.
it’s really spot on usage here.

It’s hard to imagine that Nate Silver, who just created an elaborate Uncertainty Index, doesn’t understand that whole fucking point is the cumulative effect of the attacks. Yay, even Kevin McCarthy says we should fund USPS. That won’t matter at all when Trump declares victory/fraud on election night with this as one among his spam blizzard of justifications.
His entire shtick now is “how are other people overly confident in their opinions about this important thing that only I am dispassionate enough to say could go either way actually?”
i didn’t read the tweet like that. sounded like pointing out a paradox and trying to get a chuckle out of it but doing it sorta clumsy, what with statisticians not being known for one-liner comedy.
and it sounds like he’s trying to stabilize his model so it doesn’t jump around after every news item (and people reacting to that jump before it reverts).
In fairness, that’s how he won the 2016 prediction wars.
This assessment is tough but fair:
The typo in this one is good enough to make me wonder if it was intentional.
If you’re the kind of person who’s adept with math and stats, you can get pretty far, and provide some real value, building simple models of things with only a little subject-matter expertise, learning just enough about a field to make sure your models are answering the right question. But at some point you also need to realize that in most fields, among the people who do have the real expertise are a fair number who know the relevant math as well. So if your spreadsheet that you built in an hour tells you that everyone in epidemiology is wrong about something, maybe you should consider that it is your model that is too simplistic.
Us math (and physics) people can be pretty bad in this regard, but it is the econ guys like Silver who are just the fking worst.
And he’s certainly smart enough to know that the optimization (whether that is simply “minimize the number of deaths” or something more complex that tries to include quality – or even value – of life issues) depends on more than a single variable.
Don’t forget lawyers!
Just the FKing worst indeed.

I don’t mind weird stuff like that. I like the grotto home people, the new orleanes square people and barbra Stristands basement.
Did you happen to go see Buyer and Cellar? It was great.
no, that’s fantastic
I just bought a ticket to this GA fundraiser. It mentions that Michael Urie will be reading, and he was the star of the show when I saw Buyer and Cellar. So I’m wondering (hoping!) he will be reading from that book.
Appeal already being heard?
And possibly made slightly better?

Home run by Olson….without mustache!
This Canning is an Orange County to UCLA guy. Maybe relevant to some people.
orange county is gross
Glen seems to be doing a pretty good job of calling the games off the feed (which is easier for tv pbp than for radio), but I do notice it a bit on potential HRs. Olson absolutely destroyed that ball, and you wouldn’t have known it from the call until it was over the fence.
(And same thing for Trout’s, just now.)
Now he’s getting used to every ball hit to RF being a HR.
(Ray: “I guarantee you with the runner on second, Grossman was just trying to hit a ground ball to the right side.” Uh, what?)
Vaguely related: Dallas is not there today, but I figured out what is so extra weird about his “poundtown” call. I mean, beside the call itself, which is already weird and bad. It is that he is not even the play-by-play guy. Is there any other color guy who feels the need to chime in with a HR catchphrase 10 seconds after the play is over?
It’s really most reminiscent of a Sportcenter-type highlight narrator.
I could see Dallas going two very different paths, one where he patiently waits (hopefully not much longer) as the heir-apparent to Fosse. And the other where he tries to build a catchphrase/hottake brand from the gutter (Barstool) up to a national cable network.
Agree on the 2 paths. I think the fact that he was with ESPN and it seemed like he was reduced only because of numbers makes him think it will be the latter.
I hope while he waits he thinks about reducing the schtick. Poundtown and 69 “nice” references are a young man’s game.
It calls to mind that SNL skit where Ray Romano is a Sports Center anchor who can’t stop referring to referring to a hockey puck being shot at the goalie’s “pooper.”
I like Dallas as color guy including the homerun call
Same. He’s fun and engaging.
Vince monday was hilarious
Hah, you can’t throw a high fastball by our best hitter!
How is the sulk-off not top of this list?
I dont even see him linking to it on Twitter so I can complain. Defensive indifference is way worse than any of these.
Another personal favorite is the runner scoring from first on a routing sacrifice bunt thrown all the way down the RF line.
And of course Ramon(v.1)’s bases-loaded 2-out bunt by a catcher.
The catcher sticking his face into a sliding runner from third to block the plate is also nice.
The Biden-Harris ticket makes a pitch for AV’s vote.
harris’ primaries identity was my favorite—typographers’ typography, a little off the traditional reds/blues. second was warren—WPA-era feel, non-pink lady colors.
OG biden was one of my least. the no E, jo bid n campaign. i mean, the font is fine. it’s the coloring.
but yeah, i was wondering about the change in font yesterday. same concept, just a font change.
just tried it out with the original fonts. noticing that the new font has a square top on the A, my hypothesis was that it would be that the A is pointy on top in brothers 1816 and might create weird [proving that i have been in front of design students for a few years in 3… 2… 1…] negative space. but it was fine. so iono. just keeping the designers working, i guess.
my quibble is that the new font, because inspired by watch faces, is meant to be legible at small sizes (the purpose of the flat-top A for example), so it looks clunky larger.

what? go see if i misquoted somehow. i did not.
The ball is really flying out of the Big A today.
Uh oh, 2019 Diekman is back.
Forgot how to grip his slider again?
The return of DieBBman
Leapin’ Laureano!
Very appealing defense by Ramon.
As always, Ramon.
If my FB post is right, 2 yrs to the day of Ramon’s great catch and wild throw to double off the runner at 1st.
The slegnA are probably pretty mad that the appeal decision wasn’t made in time for today’s game.
It would behoove the offense to score some more runs.
Hits not necessarily required!
Thank you.
So “behoove” is the magic word. I won’t overuse it but will pull it out when it’s really necessary.
Scioscia already on his 7th pitcher.
that inning was brutal
Coming up next, Greinke vs. Trevor Cahill
oh trev
1.2 inning 0 runs 0 hits 2ks 4 bb
Getting good years out of Cahill in 2018 and Anderson in 2019 was some wizardry.
It took two days to overcome the combination of my spouting the winning streak statistics and the mikeA Vacation Jinx but it looks like we are ready to resume forward progress now.
Hey Soaker, what’s your read on these no-tourist protests up there? We have reservations to camp at DL Bliss in a couple weeks and are waffling, mostly for our own coronavirus concerns. Offending the locals would be another reason to cancel. Needless to say, we wouldn’t be leaving trash in our wake.
Oh good grief, I hadn’t seen that. It’s like every other tourist town, we hate the tourists but we want their money. What he’s right about is: I cannot believe how many visitors we have seen this summer since we reopened the hotels and campgrounds and allowed the vacation rentals to go back in business. That was about a week after Memorial Day. This has been the busiest summer I have even seen (now my 12th summer); even weekdays look like weekends, and weekends themselves, yikes. I thought 12% unemployment would work its usual magic but the opposite happened. More people, proportionately more idiots, more trash. Sure you’re welcome to come, but be prepared for crowds and traffic. Re Bliss, I spent one weekday on the beach over at Calawee Cove maybe a month ago and there were a lot of people, but what bugged me most was the maskless dingdongs on the boats, mostly 20- and 30-somethings, having their Covid parties on the water.
Adding one thing to it: Despite the heavy visitor count, as far as risk of contracting Covid-19 I have all along felt much safer here than I think I would in a heavily populated place like the Bay Area. There are still far fewer people per square foot. But I’m not going to touristy places like ice cream shops and I know which hours are best to hit Safeway (early morning ideally and not at all on the weekend). Outdoor stuff like hikes seems zero risk; I have increasingly seen people coming the other way on a trail put on masks as I approach, or sometimes they’re just wearing them full-time, but I don’t see the need for that, I just smile and give them 6 feet or as close to it as I can, and the way I do it is the rule. But, your comfort zone might be a lot different from mine.
Thanks a ton for the local insight. For COVID pretty much my only worries are crowded beaches and campground bathrooms. We’ll do 98% of commerce at home (not so much $ for the locals, sorry). But I didn’t realize the crowds had actually grown beyond usual summer levels, that’s disheartening. Our usual DL Bliss routine is to hit the beach early, then hike or siesta midday, then beach again late afternoon.
Usually the visitor population drops at the time you’re talking about, 2 weeks before Labor Day, as schools open. This year, I don’t know. A kid can learn online on the vacation rental wifi, and the weather is pretty nice until about the first week of November. After that I think the snow shovel thing will drive out some people who think “work from home” at Tahoe is a good solution.
Right. It’s everyone “working” from home suddenly free to be up there.
Hell, I have a vision of renting a place for all of December and finally getting a real win on ski passes.
Seems reasonable.
I don’t fear the city, I fear my job and have to have long discussions with sea captains in jail who thinks its a hoax and likes to yell.
People are generally respectful in the city and we seem to be having better days.
its pretty quiet at night, which I don’t like.
Fangraphs added statcast data. Its fun I suppose.
Scioscia really set up his rotation for the best team in the league
kersaw 3.0 v Sandoval
Bueler v Heany
May v Tehran
Just watched Zach Plesac Instagram posting about him leaving the hotel. Rarely seen a more righteous attempt to avoid taking any responsibility at all.
He wants the TRUTH to get out. Of course he immediately says the truth is exactly what has been reported, so uh…yeah.
And… DFA.
It’s the Kaep rule: you need to be a star before you’re worth the headache. (Though, of course, I have different views about the WAYS they were headaches.)
started watching … realized it was 6.5 minutes long … closed tab
Ramon suspension reduced to four games. I like how MLB is pointedly placing most of the blame on Cintron. Maybe they’ll start punishing umpires who act belligerently for instigating conflicts as well, wouldn’t that be cool?
That would be cool, but the umpire’s union would go after that hard, wouldn’t they? Do the coaches even have a union?
Also, I hope you’re going to be able to watch the Eco Challenge, though it’s on Amazon Prime so you may not get it. The early eco challenges were our first introduction to Mark Burnett, and they were hard core. This one sounds like a doozy, with 60+ teams going after it through Fijian islands.
Ooh, thanks for the rec, we’re looking for a new competition series to watch, will check out.
Are you caught up with Alone! Exciting, heading into finale next week.
Yes, we’re up to speed on Alone and yeah, all the ones left are great. I’m even enjoying the post-game chats with Colby, as long as we can zoom through the endless commercials. The first couple episodes of Eco Challenge did not disappoint.
Didn’t the ups all wear black armbands when someone got mildly criticized once?
Back. Hopefully nothing
Oh no Barca. No no no.
Hulu plus won’t play man city lyon till 5!
Unbelievable. Maybe its time to move on
I guess this means he won’t be polluting our TV screens at Yankees playoff games anymore?
Maybe Alan Dershowitz will take his seats.
This is where the foot soldiers for his remaon in the white house strategy come from:
I just watched the Orioles get the last out of the seventh and wasn’t sure until the pitcher walked off the mound whether that was the end of the game or not.
Weird season.
Orioles are wearing road grays at Camden.
Sure, but at least we won following a hitless 10th inning. So something makes sense.
