A mere fortnight of “Camp Coliseum” is all that remains before the alleged start of the “season.” Whether Krusty shows up or not, we can still have a good time here grilling.

    Really fun Brisbee piece in The Athletic on the history of San Francisco coming to realize that Candlestick was a disaster.

    A few highlights:

    -Richard Nixon threw out the first pitch on the day it opened and said “San Francisco can say that this is the finest ball park in America.”
    -By May 1962, 15 people were reported to have had heart attacks climbing up to the seating levels.
    -This:

    A 1959 issue of Popular Science declared that fans would be “warmed up by their seats in the cool night air.” More than 35,000 feet of wrought-iron pipe was laid, and the plans were to circulate hot water from a boiler that would cut through the cold. According to the aforementioned Sporting News article, “Giant owner Horace Stoneham says radiant heat won’t be needed, and if he has his way, it will never be turned on.”

    All of the pipes were buried too deep in the concrete. The radiant heat — an expensive luxury in a ballpark that was already wildly over-budget — never worked. The failure of the radiant-heating system eventually led to a breach-of-contract lawsuit from Melvin Belli, complete with testimony from an Abercrombie and Fitch executive, who testified he had “outfitted an Arctic expedition with lighter clothing than the average Giants’ fan wore to a night game.” The Giants did eventually refund the cost of his season tickets.

      That hot water heat plan is bonkers. Has any stadium anywhere else even attempted something like that?

      Another fun part: “during a remodeling, the Giants found a small apartment under the stands” presumed to have been hidden there by one of the architects for his personal use.

    While we’re talking about the Giants and I’m linking to the Athletic, the Giants’ radio team will not be going on road trips.

    “Once we were designated Tier 3 by MLB and not allowed on (the) team plane, buses, etc., that changed our calculus,” Flemming texted on Thursday. “We are allowed to travel, but on our own entirely. We thought that safety dictated that would be too risky — airports, hotels, rental cars — we really are trying to keep everyone safe and healthy. So I’m not particularly nervous for myself, but it’s on all of us to avoid exposing each other. And travel without the team’s infrastructure just feels too exposed. (The) Giants allowed us input in that decision and didn’t force us either way, which was nice.

    • Soaker Jul 13,2020 3:45 pm || Up

      And will be practicing distancing for the home games.

      The Giants’ broadcasters will not be allowed to be in the same booths during the 60-game season because if one person showed symptoms of the coronavirus, the entire broadcast team would have to be quarantined. Krukow will now be set up in Willie McCovey’s booth, which neighbors the home TV booth. Jon Miller and Dave Flemming will also be separated, doing the radio call from two adjacent booths. Neither Krukow nor Kuiper thought this would be an issue.

      “Even though we’ll be in different booths he’ll only be three or four feet away with a window in between us,” Kuiper said. “We’ll use hand signals or whatever. That’s not going to be a problem.”

      There may also be a booth shortage problem. Ken and Vince probably won’t usually travel, but there are the three games in San Francisco, and I’d think Vince would do an in-person call of the two immediately following that in Phoenix, possibly with his son.

      There are, however, challenges that already have been identified. The MLB operations manual for this unique season does not allow TV broadcasters to travel but does permit it for radio broadcasters, so it’s possible that an opposing team could show up at Oracle Park with a radio team and a Spanish-language radio team. At some point they would run out of booths on the broadcast level, which could lead to a visiting broadcaster being set up in the seats nearby.

      Charley Steiner is doing this one better, doing PxP for all games home and road from his living room.

      By Friday, an impromptu booth was built in his living room. On Sunday, he was on the call for the Dodgers’ first exhibition game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

      The setup includes three flat-screen televisions — one mounted and one on the floor on either side. One has a direct feed from the television broadcast truck. Another has a stationary angle from above for a view of all the fielders called “The All-9″. The third features shots of the bullpen and a running scoreboard.

      Monday and Duane McDonald, the broadcast’s producer and engineer, will work in Suite 215 at Dodger Stadium for both home and road games. Steiner will be in his living room, wishing he could be with his colleagues but happy to be on the air again.

      I have not read of any radio broadcasters who plan on doing road games in person, because they would have to travel outside the “bubble”. Ken, Vince and Ray are doing tonight’s radio broadcast from the Coliseum; I’m sure they want to try out the setup in an exhibition game and would think they would drive over to San Francisco for regular season games.

        You know, I meant to dial in KNBR last night to see how Miller and Fleming sounded calling a game from afar, but I forgot.

        I’m guessing that Ken and Vince will not head to SF for the regular season games there because the Giants crew will be using all four of the regular broadcast booths and setting something new up for a weekend won’t be worth it. But who knows?

    This whole story of a Baltimore homicide detective allegedly, with the help of three other cops, kidnapping a guy whose construction work he was unhappy with and forcing him to draw a cashiers check for a refund while threatening to “take you in the woods” is insane, but I want to especially call out the balls on his lawyer:

    At a bail review hearing Friday, defense attorney Matthew Fraling told Baltimore County District Court Judge Kim Thomas that the matter should be a civil issue and not criminal, saying it all stems from “poor construction” by contractor on a new patio.

    • andeux Jul 10,2020 12:13 pm || Up

      The police department confirmed that the officers were on duty at the time.

      He should just argue that there is no clearly established case law saying they couldn’t do this, so qualified immunity applies.

    I don’t know a whole lot about the International Baccalaureate program, but if they are really assigning grades this year based on a machine learning model whose inputs include “the grade that a teacher believes each student was likely to have obtained if the exams were held as planned” along with “miscellaneous other data, wherever it is available” that sounds extremely sketchy.

    Kyle Williams, who never had a sniff at a championship during his NFL career /cheapshot , goes into the final round of the ACC celebrity golf trailing Mardy Fish by 3 points. John Smoltz will be a third player in the final group but he trails Fish by 18 points. Fish has been playing here for quite a few years so I’ll go with the experience (it’s only Williams’ second appearance). That other FK favorite, Mark Mulder, is T7 but I can’t see him gaining 20 points on Fish in one day.

        Checking again this morning, results still “pending”. I didn’t expect any change in that between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

        Collectively the results of asymptomatic testing are useless because the people being tested self-select. It’s not a random sample and is biased against certain groups (those who don’t have a car to get to a testing site for example). Individually giving me a result that will be at least 5 days old does nothing whatsoever to stop the spread of the virus.

        However I’m sure this testing company LHI “Logistics Health Incorporated” collects a nice fee from government for conducting a “free to me” test to generate a worthless result. That’s a scam.

      My dad is in assisted living in Mill Valley. They had an employee test positive about a week ago so now all residents and staff get tested by Marin Public Health… but supposedly it’s going to take ten days for results to come back. It’s amazing that testing is still sooo bad.

    • Soaker Jul 14,2020 5:46 am || Up

      I finally received the result this morning, Day 7. One of the first things we heard was how important the testing would be. My expectation by now, 4 months in, would be something like a 72-hour turnaround for the results, but everything I’ve read says 7 days is about average right now with some people waiting up to 10 days.

    Not great, WNBA

    The doctor who treats my Lyme disease wrote up a full report, detailing my medical history and confirming my high-risk status. The Mystics team doctor (who is awesome, but who’s never treated my Lyme disease) wrote a report essentially deferring to my Lyme disease doctor, and agreeing about my high risk profile. I filed both reports to the league, as required, along with a signed form waiving my right to an appeal.

    A few days later, the league’s panel of doctors — without ever once speaking to me or to either of my doctors — informed me that they were denying my request for a health exemption.

          They had the same problem I’ve been dealing with for years. Separate audio and video feeds are never in sync when they’re received by the end user. You have to delay one of them to match them up and it’s usually the audio. The consequence is, the broadcast isn’t live because of that delay they had to put in.

              Some things will improve as they get more used to calling from monitors, as the techs get the feeds better aligned, etc. But calling balls in the air off the bat is going to be nearly impossible to do well. No feed is going to give you the continuous unbroken view of swing-contact-launch angle you need.

        I would put them in Chicago, if that city and the state will have them. Going through the schedules I have them playing 13 games at the White Sox place and 17 at Wrigley Field, with no series split between the two ballparks and with only one schedule adjustment, a swap of home series with the Rays on back to back weekends.

        Something similar could be done in New York, but it would effectively give the Yankees 37 home games.

        They could probably import some local talent from elsewhere.
        Supposedly the hangup with Buffalo was stadium lighting for TV and other aspects of the facility (like the weight room) not being considered major-league standard. It’s actually a pretty nice park, the first of the retro ballparks a couple of years before Camden, but I guess without fans the aesthetics don’t matter nearly as much as the infrastructure.
        Like FSU says, it’s pretty embarrassing that they are this close to the “opening day” and still scrambling for a solution.

        It would make this season even less credible if guys on his level didn’t play.

        Clicking around on some stuff yesterday led me to an Aubrey Huff Twitter post. I didn’t want to degrade FK by linking it. He was ranting about Gabe Kapler and some of the Giants players kneeling the other night and said something along the lines of “All these players who are opting out, it’s not because of concern about the virus, it’s because they don’t want to kneel or wear BLM patches on their uniform and don’t want the criticism from the social justice jerks if they refuse.” The opt outs seem pretty limited though: Price and Posey are the two big names, Markakis, Desmond and a couple others on the next level and that’s about it. I suppose there could be some additions but I was expecting a few more.

      • ptbnl Jul 23,2020 7:27 am || Up

        More generally, despite its extraordinarily success we have lots of evidence of the insufficiency of the Standard Model of physics, including the incompatibility of its two components (Quantum Chromodynamics and General Relativity) and the absence from it of ~95% of the Universe (Dark Energy and Dark Matter). Moreover, the very early Universe – which is when the asymmetry has to occur for the observed Universe to exist – is precisely the environment in which the shortcomings of the Standard Model are most cruelly exposed.
